NATIONAL AUTHOR'S DAY | NOVEMBER 1On November 1, millions of people celebrate authors and the books they write on National Author's Day.#NationalAuthorsDayBooks have a mind of their own. They take time to develop, research, draft, edit, revise and rewrite. We devour stories. We indulge in them as we drift off to sleep or travel. And sometimes, we allow them to collect dust on several flat surfaces in our homes. Those stories may take years to reach a publisher and just as long to reach a bookshelf. We may have only one favorite author or many collected works with which we cannot part. Whether we prefer fiction, non-fiction, or a mix of both, authors have been telling stories to fill our heads for thousands of years.Authors also keep a record of history through their stories. They mark time through their observations. Their tales create remarkable memories of a place, sealing it between the pages of the binding. Their books allow us to keep coming back to visit again and again. After her grandmother's death in 1968, Sue Cole promoted the observance of National Authors Day. She urged people to write a note to their favorite author on November 1, to “brighten up the sometimes lonely business of being a writer.” She also suggested flying the American flag as another way of showing appreciation for the writers who have created American literature. HOW TO OBSERVE NATIONAL AUTHOR'S DAYPurchase some books by your favorite author to support them. Share your favorite novels online while encouraging an aspiring author. Use #NationalAuthorsDay to post on social media.NATIONAL AUTHOR'S DAY HISTORYIn 1928, Nellie Verne Burt McPherson, president of the Bement, Illinois Women's Club, had an idea of setting aside a day to celebrate American authors. McPherson was a teacher, and throughout her life, an avid reader. While she was recuperating in the hospital during World War I, she wrote a fan letter to fiction writer, Irving Bacheller. She told him how much she enjoyed reading his story Eben Holden's Last Day A' Fishin.  Upon receiving her letter, Bacheller sent her an autographed copy of another story. It was then that McPherson realized she would never be able to thank him adequately for his gift. McPherson decided to show her appreciation by submitting an idea for a National Author's Day to the General Federation of Women's Clubs. In May of 1929, the club endorsed a resolution for National Author's Day to be observed honoring American writers. The United States Department of Commerce recognized this day in 1949.___https://livingthenextchapter.com/podcast produced by: https://truemediasolutions.ca/Have a podcast and need a great website? She learned this in part from the traumatic losses of her brother and then her husband three years later. Mary didn't allow the tragedy of their deaths to go in vain, instead she learned and developed the strength and tools for the successes she acquired to date. In this episode, Wendy also shares with us her ideas around “big thinking” and the courage it takes to make significant moves in life and business. She's a curious businesswoman who now focuses on real estate and the cannabis industry, for which she serves on an executive board. Taking your cannabis dreams from idea to reality takes many more steps than entrepreneurs realize, starting with an often complicated licensing process. In this highly regulated industry, the guidance of a cannabis-focused lawyer can make all the difference. In this episode, Dina Rollman, SVP of Government and Regulatory Affairs at Green Thumb Industries, discusses the critical role she played in building up cannabis in the Midwest through litigation and fostering diversity in the space. She explains that rising operators need to apply for licensing with their vision and story in mind, and that barriers like money and access often hinder the success of social equity applicants. Dina also emphasizes the importance of lifting up others through programs like Illinois Women in Cannabis and LEAP at GTI, which work with aspiring cannabis professionals to help them break into the industry in a variety of ways.

This conversation with Dr. David Hass and Carrie Armour preceded the first annual Medical Cannabis Research and Advocacy Alliance conference, to be held in March 2021 (virtually). Dave and Carrie are deeply involved in the world of medical cannabis but come to it from very different perspectives. Dave is a medical doctor who understands the science and has seen first-hand what medical cannabis can do for some patients. Carrie is an attorney who has devoted her professional life to working on medical cannabis policy and regulations. Our conversation helps put context around why it’s been so hard for many people -- doctors and patients alike -- to get a straight story on medical cannabis, and how a very mixed bag of regulations makes it hard to conduct good scientific research. We even address the commercial explosion of adult-use recreational cannabis and CBD, which seems to only add more confusion to this complicated landscape. Dr. Hass attended medical school at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University, followed by residency training at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, and Gastroenterology and Hepatology fellowship training at Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, NY. He currently serves on the clinical faculty at the Yale University School of Medicine and has a unique hybrid of private practice and academics. He is the Medical Director of PACT Gastroenterology Centerin the New Haven CT area, as well as the Director of Endoscopy at Yale New Haven Hospital – Saint Raphael Campus, where he is actively involved in the fellowship training program at Yale. Dr. Hass is passionate about both patient and physician advocacy and has served as President of the New Haven County Medical Association and is currently Vice President of the Connecticut State Medical Society State Council. He is a certified clinical hypnotherapist, a modality implemented to treat functional abdominal pain. His clinical interests include small bowel disease, inflammatory bowel disease and complementary and alternative therapies in the treatment of gastrointestinal and hepatic disease including medical cannabis use. Carrie Armour has over fifteen years of experience representing physicians, patients and the cannabis industry as a government affairs attorney and advocacy consultant. As a consultant, Carrie focuses on improving pain management and influencing policies to create highly regulated, compliance focused cannabis programs as well as expanding opportunities for cannabis education and cannabis research. Prior to opening up her consulting firm, Armour Advocacy, Carrie worked for over a decade at the American Medical Association in its state government affairs division. At the AMA, Carrie developed and managed advocacy campaigns to help shape and inform state laws, regulations and policies in support of patients and physicians focusing on public health improvement and protecting the physician-patient relationship.Carrie began her legal career as a prosecutor at the Cook County State’s Attorney. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Miami University and a Juris Doctorate from Loyola University School of Law. She is on the Board of the Medical Cannabis Research Advocacy Alliance, a Director on the Board of Illinois Women in Cannabis and a member of the International Cannabis Bar Association and the Illinois Cannabis Bar Association.
