We're all going to be affected by the same outcome. When I went up to Svalbard (Norway), I went with the intention of also capturing the beauty and the terror of the reality of these changes and how they can be at once fascinating to listen to, but also devastating to the environment. You've just heard an excerpt from composer and environmental sound artist Mary Edwards' Everywhere We Are is the Farthest Place composition, an ode to the transforming Arctic landscape, climate vulnerability, elemental sensuality and Terrestrial Space Analogues. Mary kindly shared a compilation mix from this soundscape composition with me to provide an example of her work that you'll hear throughout this episode. Mary holds an Interdisciplinary Master of Fine Arts in Sound and Architecture from Goddard College, and has been awarded residencies and commissions around the world. I met Mary for the first time at the World Forum for Acoustic Ecology's Listening Pasts/Listening Futures Conference in Florida in March 2023 and was immediately struck by the originality of her art and her positive energy, generosity and curiosity. We spoke by Zoom on May 24th, 2024 when we were both recovering from an unseasonable cold snap. We talked about her interdisciplinary arts and listening practices that encompass notions of temporality, impermanence, nostalgia and the natural world. For example:Listening is an inherent part of what I do. It's not just creating sound and music, but raising awareness. If we listen more intently to our environment, we can understand the health of our environment.Welcome to the wonderful and engaging sonic world of Mary Edwards. Mary recommended the follow :Silent Spring and other writing on the environment and Sea Trilogy by Rachel CarsonSilence: A Social History of One of the Least Understood Elements of Our Lives by Jane Brox (note: during our conversation Mary accidentally called her Suzanne Knox)The work of composer Sven Libaek see https://theroundtable.bandcamp.com/album/the-music-of-sven-libaek *END NOTES FOR ALL EPISODESHere is a link for more information on season 5. To discovering the secrets of her rocket scientist father and grandfather, and learning from artists and architects who inspired her love of space, work in art, and interior design. Mary helped design the interiors with NASA's International Space Station. After many regressions Mary found out about her many hybrid children, more details of her off world travels and her mission on earth to connect our galactic family.
Thinking of the French philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre, it is hard to think of him without imagining him in very particular contexts. One will likely imagine him in a Parisian cafe working through a pack of cigarettes and coffee, working on his latest play while waiting for his friend Pierre to arrive. His theories of freedom against the temptations of bad faith are thought to be theories of writers and activists, resisters of occupation. But while this is no doubt a central part of his thinking, it misses another context he was very much interested in: the clinic. While he was not an orthodox Freudian or trained analyst, he was deeply interested in many of the questions that psychoanalysts are also interested in, and this intersection proved to be very productive, generating thousands of pages of lesser known works. This is what Mary Edwards, philosophy lecturer at Cardiff University, has written about in her new book Sartre's Existential Psychoanalysis: Knowing Others (Bloomsbury, 2022). Working through Sartre's output from beginning to end, it first sets the stage with his early claims about the nature of the self and the possibility of knowing a person. From there, it works to his later works, in particular his voluminous yet unfinished biography of Gustave Flaubert, where Edwards finds Sartre developing and applying a very particular method of understanding a person while nonetheless maintaining a respect for their free nature. While Sartre never completed his intended project, Edwards finds his attempt suggestive for rethinking life both in and beyond the clinic. Learn more about your ad choices. Author, Brendan Slocumb has found his voice and says what he wants in his second novel, the music thriller, “Symphony of Secrets!" Imagine that the single most influential piece of modern American music — a tour de force that spans classical, opera, Indigenous, Latin, folk, jazz and blues — was not, as claimed, the work of a White man but stolen from a homeless Black woman with a mental disability. Such a theft, and the public deletion of its true creator, would be a powerful illustration of the exploitation of marginalized artists. A contemporary classical-music scholar gradually discovers the long-hidden truth inside a cryptic archive. Slocumb subtly weaves an important message about racial erasure in American music history in his fast-paced, music-thriller detective adventure. Story J (Jason Williams) is the Host & Creator of “The Storytime Show” and our featured guest in "We See You!" He tells us how creating a story time class for kids, during the Covid pandemic, saved his life and lead to “The Storytime Show!” We also talk about child development, the importance of representation, if he would ever have Drag Queens reading to children, the evolution of masculinity, and the reasons behind the efforts to eradicate public education. Alvin, Bobby, and Vash recognize National Teacher Appreciate Week, National Nurses Week, and in honor of Mother's Day, pay tribute to their own moms: Margaret V. King, Mary Edwards, and Edith Smith. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/hesaidhesaidhesaidlive/message
'The Prize' revisits the 1943 Archibald Prize scandal, when portrait painter William Dobell was temporarily stripped of the prize for his expressionistic portrait of Joshua Smith. The Art Gallery of New South Wales trustees were taken to the Supreme Court of New South Wales by vexatious competitors Mary Edwards and Joseph Wolinski, claiming that the winning painting was a caricature, not a portrait. The fallout from the case was devastating for both Dobell and Smith who had been likely lovers in a socially conservative Sydney. In the aftermath, never met or spoke to each other again. In this episode Gregory Dobbs chats to Kim Anderson about the tensions arising from a nation extracting itself from a culturally conservative past and embracing a modernist future, and the challenges in characterising the intimate relationship between William Dobell and Joshua Hill.

Composer/singer/songwriter Mary Edwards returns for her second visit to the show and this time, you better bundle up because she's taking us on a trip to the arctic to listen to glaciers, wind, water and more. I mean, sure, this is a podcast so of course we should be listening but we're gonna listen to a glacier? Sorta, sorta not, what we're gonna do is hear Mary's good travels up to the northern most part of our world to record and then compose one of her original soundscapes that's all focused on nature and planet Earth. This is a good adventure you didn't even know was possible and Mary is the perfect tour guide. Best part is you don't have to bring a coat to enjoy her good story.

For episode 6, we managed to record a very special experience… Mr Greenwood organised a wonderful lunchtime talk with an 'old girl' from Norwich High - Mary Edwards attended our school during the war and told us all about her experiences growing up. She is incredibly spritely and warm, she also has the most incredible memory!! I hope you enjoy the snippet of what was an insightful and captivating talk. Unfortunately, we encountered some technical difficulties which means the audio is a bit glitchy and we only have 20ish minutes of her talk - but I hope you find what we have an interesting and thought-provoking fragment. - Love, Neha x

Women of Substance with Dr. Scarlett Horton Episode 13 - Dr. Scarlett Horton interviews Dr. Mary Edwards-Williams __________ Dr. Mary Edwards-Williams is an Author, Editor, Book Coach, Conference Speaker, Personal Consultant, and Legacy Coach. She is the co-founder of Joy of Jesus Ministries in Detroit, and CEO of Leaves of Gold Consulting, LLC. She is also the founder of Widows with Wisdom, The Called and Ready Writers, His Lovely Wife Ministries, and M.E.D.I.C. Ministries. Dr. Mary wrote her autobiography, "Born Grown," in 2007. She shares with the reader how, at the age of 13, she became a mother the same day she lost her virginity. The school was horrified. Mary was an honor roll student when this happened. The school predicted that now she would become just another negative welfare statistic. But God had a different plan. At the age of 33, Dr. Mary accepted Jesus Christ into her life. He changed man’s doomsday prophecy for her into His divine destiny. If you ask her how she defied the odds, she will tell you that the day she heard the indictment against her she said within herself, “No. I’m better than that.” At that point, she began to write the script for her life, not the way it was, but the way she wanted it to be. Dr. Mary has received recognition from her city, county, governor, and even the President of The United States for her community work, including that of establishing programs to get mothers off the welfare rolls. In this motivating episode, Scarlett and Mary talk about the importance of living a life that leaves a legacy. Mary Edwards has a multi-generational relationship with outer space. Mary's daughter, Mary herself, her father and grandfather have all done significant work with NASA, going all the way back to the beginning. Her father and grandfather were Rocket scientists with associations with Albert Einstein and Werner Von Braun. Mary's career as an artist might sound like a path that would take her a million miles away from that, but her career has taken her into the world of interior design, combining skills on her father's side of the family and architecture on he mother's side of the family, to design interiors for the International Space Station. As well as hotels and hospitals, where she has focused on improving the psychological liveability of confined spaces – something very relevant to all of us in 2021 Barbara Lamb, whom we are welcoming back to The 5th Kind TV, is a Licensed Psychotherapist whose work in Family and Child Therapy goes back more than 40 years. For ore than 25 years Barbara has honed an approach championed by the late Professor John Mack – Head of the Department of Clinical Psychology for Harvard, having personally regressed more than 2,000 people, helping them to recover memories of close encounters. Her personal catalogue of case studies in this field is without parallel. The incredible backgrounds of these two women have come together in a unique collaboration, helping children and families with children who have experienced close encounters.

Five scientists, working in different parts of the world, bear witness to some of the dramatic changes to our planet that have occurred in their lifetimes, as the global climate warms. They share their hopes and fears and report on some ingenious local solutions to rapidly changing conditions. 3. 3 million square kilometres of ice has been lost in the Arctic since 1979. Geographer, Professor Mary Edwards lived in Alaska for many years. She has witnessed a cruise ship navigating the Northwest Passage for the first time and seen villages in the Arctic disappear, as melting ice has led to a dramatic loss of landmass too. Produced by Anna Buckley for the BBC Radio Science Unit. First broadcast on Wednesday 23 May, 2018.

St. Louis’ literary community lost one of its most influential members, Lorin Cuoco, 64, earlier this month. The longtime editor and poet passed away at her University City home Aug. 8 after a long illness, as reported by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Cuoco is perhaps best known for her work alongside the late novelist William Gass, a dear friend and collaborator. Together they founded and oversaw Washington University’s International Writers Center (now the Center for the Humanities), and she edited multiple books with Gass. She was also a force for the St. Louis Poetry Center, the River Styx literary organization and other local efforts to raise the profile of St. Louis’ literary scene. On top of all that, she was an accomplished radio professional. In this episode, host Sarah Fenske discusses Cuoco’s life and legacy with two people who observed her influence firsthand: Mary Edwards and Joel Minor. Remembrances from multiple listeners are also included.

This is one of the papers from our 2017 Annual Conference, the Future of Phenomenology. Information and the full conference booklet can be found at www.britishphenomenology.org.uk Abstract Drawing upon the work of John Duncan (2005), Thomas R. Flynn (2014), and upon Frederick A. Olafson’s (1967) classic text, Principles and Persons: An Ethical Interpretation of Existentialism, this paper argues that the development of Jean-Paul Sartre’s phenomenology is guided by his commitment to providing a robust foundation for philosophical realism. Its aim is to illuminate how, rather than merely enriching our knowledge of experience itself, Sartre’s mature phenomenology seeks to transcend experience toward the concrete realm of worldly being by affirming that human experience provides the basis for a ‘realistic materialism’. This paper proceeds by first discussing how, despite his initial, enthusiastic engagement with the phenomenology of Edmund Husserl, Sartre departs from Husserl in his efforts to turn his phenomenology outward – towards deepening our understanding of others and things in the world – rather than inward – toward the self – which is how he interprets Husserl’s work. Then, it traces the development of Sartre’s phenomenological thought from Being and Nothingness through to the Critique of Dialectical Reason and argues that Sartre progressed from using the tools of ‘pure’ phenomenology as a means of examining consciousness, to developing a realist phenomenology that is committed to describing human experience as concrete experience of an embodied self, the world, and others. Finally, this paper highlights some idealist tendencies that persist in Sartre’s thought and poses the question of whether his mature phenomenology can support a defence of ‘realism-proper’. It concludes by gesturing towards an answer in the negative, but which defends Sartre’s choice not to isolate metaphysics from politics in his later work.

Tonight's special guest is Mary Hall Edwards from Mill Spring, North Carolina, founder of Be A Voice 4 Kids after many years of hiding her own childhood abuse. The mission of Be a Voice 4 Kids is to educate, prevent and heal child abuse through Spiritual strength, peer support and inspiration. The group provides resource referrals, peer support to survivors, peer support to kids and family, prevention education and, of course, hope. After learning that children who were close to her heart were being sexually abused, Mary prayed about standing up for youngsters who had no voice in these situations. According to NAASCA family member Kiesa Kay, "Mary Edwards has been a moving force, bringing education about this social ill to her community and founding this group. She has supported specific education for 100 community members in abuse prevention, and she has offered information and resources at a dozen festivals. She also does one-to-one peer counseling and has been a founder of a survivors' support group. She has been unsinkable in her determination to make the community a safer, healthier place for children and for women hurt as children, too. She is the driving force behind education and information in Polk County, and she has created an organization that could be replicated in other counties. She inspires and strengthens others to end this societal ill, which affects at least one in ten children in our country." Mary's also a Darkness to Light Stewards of Children facilitator.
