Elliott Gould is BACK!  And it SHOULD be a great episode.  The debut of Nick the Lounge Singer, an AMAZING piece of physical comedy from Gilda, and...wait for it...they DROP THE COW!!  If that wasn't enough, Elliott (as he is want to do) kicks things off with a song and dance number.  And yet...something is just not right. The two musical acts probably don't help. One is Elliott Gould's ex-wife's half sister.  The other is comprised OF sisters.  And, there's a pretty good chance (at least) one of them was sleeping with Elliott. If this sounds confusing wait until you hear us try to make sense of it all.  What are you waiting for?Subscribe today! And so - as the sun pulls away from the shore and our ship sinks slowly below the horizon we say farewell to The Slightly Different Radio Show. It's had a good innings, but its race is run and its metaphors have entangled. Nevertheless, there's still time to listen to Melody Gardot, Bob Dylan, Anna Hester, Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys, Kate & Anna McGarrigle, The Mississippi Sheiks, Blast Furnace, Waterson-Carthy and quite a lot of other musicians worthy of note - some of them even well known! So, pull up a deck chair, pour yourself a long glass of liquid and settle down (with a large box of tissues; it is the final show. Sniff) for an hour or so of unparalleled entertainment... I'm not sure if that's the right adjective but, hey, it's only a radio show.

The union representing bus drivers in Metro Vancouver, Seabus operators, and maintenance workers - and they have issued 72-hour strike notice. Gavin McGarrigle from Unifor says Coast Mountain Bus Company workers have demanded better breaks and wages for months, and have been ignored by the company. He spoke to Stirling Faux on the Jon McComb Show this morning. It will be the first transit strike in 18 years and McGarrigle says workers don't want to impact the public, but current conditions don't work in favour of passengers OR drivers. McGarrigle says at the moment a complete shutdown of services has been ruled out, so job action starting at 12:01am Friday will be targeted and could include work-to-rule. The Coast Mountain Bus Company tells Global News it will be working with partners on a contingency plan "should a worst-case scenario unfold".   Guest: Ian Tostenson  Ridesharing Now for BC President and CEO of the BC Restaurant and Foodservices Association

Mike, Amanda, and Pasquale sit down to discuss celebrities having opinions, Congress starting to look a little bit like America, how one very specific military family is coping with Trump's government shutdown, basic middle school civics, the Delco Republican Party's new chairman failing upward, whether Speaker Pelosi has us in her AirPods, jokes specifically directed at single individuals, and Mike's hair. Then, Brian tags in to tell a few military stories, talk about using "West West Philly" as a dog whistle, discuss What Did Millennials Kill This Week, learn things about Pasquale that we can't unlearn, refine the difference between Delco and Delaware County, gain a healthy fear and respect for the sea, discover the subplot of the entire podcast, and just generally go completely off the rails for like 40 minutes. Mass protests against Trump’s immigration policies swept the nation last Saturday. The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services is creating a new “denaturalization” task force. Occupy ICE camps expand across the U.S. calling for the end of the agency in the wake of Trump’s child separation policies. 19 ICE high-level ICE agents beg to get separated from the ICE Gestapo. Democratic Party says “nothing to see here” about Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s huge upset victory in the NY-14 last Tuesday, says Nancy Pelosi. But, DNC Chair, Tom Perez tells Bill Press that Ocasio-Cortez represents the future of the party. Shake up in the NY Democratic Machine with Julia Salazar’s run for State Senate. Bronx Dem machine has big meeting and doesn’t invite Ocasio-Cortez and State Senator Gustavo Rivera to the meeting. Tammy Duckworth says it’s just a Bronx thing. Will alienate Midwestern voters she said. Just a reminder: Bernie Sanders won the Democratic Party primaries in North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Indiana, West Virginia, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Kansas. Democratic Party leadership sounding similar to the line taken by donors and Wall Street lobbyists. Great episode of This American Life, “It’s My Party and I’ll Try if I Want to,” a couple weeks ago following the campaign of Jeff Beal in the NY 19th provided an interesting look into the DCCC. An actual headline from Politico this week read: “Illinois Governor Breaks with Cruz over Nazi Candidate”   In the wake of the Janus v. AFSCME ruling, Labor Notes releases a new organizing guide: “Rebuilding Power in Open Shop America.” Seems like required movement for the labor movement right about now. And, a little late to the game, Princeton economists find that unions had a historical role in helping address income inequality. “The rise in income inequality between skilled and unskilled workers since the 1970s might be due, at least in part, to a decline in union membership, Princeton University researchers have found,” they write. New York Gov. Cuomo signs an executive order banning the release of state workers personal”contact information in the wake of the Janus decision. Goodbye Anthony Kennedy.  Monday, Trump - that is, the Federalist Society - is expected to announce his pick for the Supreme Court. Three judges lead the pack: Amy Coney Barrett, Brett Kavanaugh, and Raymond Kethledge.  Michigan judge rules that children do not, in fact, have a fundamental right to learn how to read and write. A new tool from ProPublica allows you to see if your school, college, or university has been investigated for civil rights violations. And this just in...ProPublica outed a white nationalist who is a Ph.D. student at UCLA and who has U.S. government security clearance to work on sensitive research for the defense contractor, Northrop Grumman. Daylin Leach goes onto Matt Brouillette's podcast and Democrats continue to give Brouillette clout within the party. Kevin Mahoney in Wilkes-Barre, Sean in Harrisburg, and Seth in Brooklyn for #FamiliesBelongTogether marches. Judy Schwank compares Berks Immigration Family Detention Center to her grandchild’s daycare facility, except for the fact that kids in daycare centers get to go home every night. Senator McGarrigle, one of the prime sponsors of Libre’s Law - a bill that protects animals, rides an elephant in the Springfield 4th of July parade.  Animal rights activists are pissed. Lou Barletta had Nigel Farage, you know, the Brexit architect, as a special guest at a fundraiser this past week. A group of faculty from PASSHE universities are raising money to file an amicus brief in support of Colleen Bradley’s case. Their GoFundMe site, “Help Us Ask the Supreme Court to Stand Up for the First Amendment” already has $550 towards their $1200 goal. On a serious note, on today’s last call I want to send love to an old college friend and roommate of mine, Ben Tessler. Ben died unexpectedly this week. My thoughts are with his family and kids and with all my friends who were equally shocked when we heard the news. Ben, Rest in Peace. Next week, I’ll be down the shore. I am hoping to stop by three breweries to stock the fridge: 7 Mile Brewery in Rio Grande, just outside of Wildwood, Cape May Brewing, and Cold Spring Brewery also in Cape May. Nice sour addition at Free Will - Kriek Nouveau - is out and round two is heading into the tank.

Salford is to Manchester pretty much what Leith is to Edinburgh - the scummy port town which is close enough to be pretty much part of the city, but still maintains a separate identity. And indeed Salford may be a good way behind Leith in this aspect, but it too seems to be slowly becoming nicer and nicer, and shrugging off some of its rough image. Salford has a very long way to go I suppose, but there does seem to be a fair bit of decent arty stuff happening down there at the moment, which tends to be how these things start. Anyhow, on Sunday I am going to down to Salford for the Sounds From the Other City festival.  There will be stages booked by all sorts of excellent Manchester promoters, like Comfortable on a Tightrope, Underachievers, Now Wave and Manchester Scenewipe, and plenty of people knocking around who I haven't seen for a while, so I am rather looking forward to it.  I also get the chance to see my Granddad and have a wee whisky together on Saturday night, which will be excellent. My Granddad and I get on really well these days, but when I first moved to England and spent some of my first year at university living at his house it wasn't always the case for various reasons. Consequently, the fact that we get on so well is something we both take great pleasure from and make sure we don't take for granted, which is a nice thing.  Whisky: bringing people together since the 1400s. 01. Seeing as we are in Canada for the weekend (dear thieves, the house is not unoccupied, and the lad staying there is a fighty little fucker), I figured some Canadian songs might be in order.  I am actually half-Canadian, which is a bit odd, because I've never actually lived there.  So it's always weird coming here, to a country I'm technically from, but which I really don't know at all. Given we played Born Gold, Odonis Odonis, Slow Down Molasses and Hot Panda on last week's show, however, I figured that was probably enough new Canadian bands for the time being, although the excellent Hooded Fang did sneak on this one at the beginning. But mostly, apart from the more usual new stuff I tend to play, I've included a handful of nostalgic songs by Canadian bands, most of which I haven't listened to in quite a long time.  And I must say it was sort of nice to look this stuff up again, after so long. 01. This podcast was recorded - not a word of a lie - on a deserted mountaintop in Corsica in the shadow of a ruined castle.  Not an especially enormous ruined castle, I'll grant you, but the shadow of a ruined castle nevertheless.  I will try and show you this as clearly as possible when I choose the picture for the mp3 tag and all that stuff, but I honestly doubt it will be all that easy.  Vast panoramas of rocky mountains don't really come across all that well in photos, particularly when the only device you have with you with which to take them is an iPhone.Anyhow, having recorded this, the challenge is going to be to find somewhere to upload the fucker.  Bank machines and shops which let you pay by card are pretty scarce commodities in the interior of the island, never mind a decent internet connection. 01. The Toadcast - the weekly podcast from Song, by Toad

I've been itching to do this podcast for a while, but only now got my arse in gear to do it: record a podcast straight from vinyl.  It's a bit of a nuisance, because I have to switch back and forth from the mic, for the chatty bits, to the USB input for the records... oh never mind, you don't care about my logistical hassles do you. The nice thing about vinyl is that the playlist is not simply going to be an inbox dump of whatever new indie has arrived this week, simply because I don't have all that much new music on vinyl.  Some, but not lots.  Also, the electicism factor is massively increased, partly because my vinyl collection is downright eccentric, and partly because the very act of leafing through completely unsorted piles of records seems to make me lots more likely to pick something absolutely random which fits with nothing else at all and really has no excuse being anywhere near a haircut indie try-hard hipster podcast.  Which is of course exactly what this is. 01. Windsor Davies & Don Estelle - Whispering Grass (from It Ain't Half Hot, Mum) (00.29) 02. Eat Skull - Heaven's Stranger (06.27) 03. The Shop Assistants - Safety Net (12.50) 04.
