Martha Wainwright is a key member of the Wainwright/McGarrigle clan, all of them big favourites of ours. She's currently on her 20th anniversary tour and looks back here at the first shows she ever saw and played which involves … … growing up in a folk dynasty in Montreal. … the sight of Perla Batalla and Julie Christensen, backing singers on Leonard Cohen's I'm Your Man tour, “who made me want to be onstage too”. … the story of ‘Matapedia', the song Kate McGarrigle wrote when an old boyfriend thought she was her teenage daughter. … her first shows playing Elvis, Dylan and Woody Guthrie songs on the coffeehouse circuit. … singing with her brother Rufus and her cousins with Kate & Anna McGarrigle at folk festivals. … onstage at the Roches' Christmas shows in New York. … the time her brother stole the show over Emmylou Harris: “I thought I want that kind of attention!” … seeing Pink Floyd's The Wall in a Montreal hockey stadium, aged 9 – “a very marking experience”. … the songs of her mother's she always plays: “I'm obsessed with her legacy”. In this special episode we celebrate the last four years with clips from twelve of the best 100 shows we've recorded in that time. Following an intro from Spandau Ballet mainmain Gary Kemp speaking in January 2023, we reflect on what we have (or haven't) learned over those four years, then play and discuss clips from these episodes: Record Mirror legend Norman Jopling on first seeing the "Rollin' Stones" in 1963 (December 2021) Writer-photographer Val Wilmer on interviewing Jimi Hendrix in 1967 (May 2024) the Village Voice's Richard Goldstein on not caring if he was "America's first rock critic" (September 2022) Creem veteran Jaan Uhelszki remembering her "almost famous" colleague Lester Bangs (May 2022) Author-filmmaker Nelson George on not reviewing the Brothers Johnson as if they were Bob Dylan (July 2021) Billboard's first rap editor Havelock Nelson on being influenced by Nelson George (March 2025) NPR's Ann Powers on being influenced by Greil Marcus (June 2024) The New Statesman's Kate Mossman on her (not-so) secret passion for jazz fusion (February 2022) "Freak-folk" icon Vashti Bunyan on her love of hymns and carols (April 2022) Vashti's 1970 producer Joe Boyd on producing Kate & Anna McGarrigle and the magic of sibling harmonies (September 2024) and... Island Records mogul Chris Blackwell recalling the al fresco recording of John Martyn's 'Small Hours' (September 2022) After our navel-gazing saunter down memory lane, Mark tells us about the week's new audio interview, in which Amy Linden asks Lauryn Hill, Wyclef Jean and Pras Michel about [the] Fugees' classic 1996 album The Score. Mark then quotes from newly-added RBP library pieces about David Bowie's Diamond Dogs (1974), Tears for Fears (1982) and Jeffrey Lee Pierce (1985) and Jasper wraps things up with thoughts on pieces about System of a Down (2003) and ex-Black Midi man Geordie Greep (2024). For this episode we're joined by a living musical legend whose career as an A&R man, manager, producer, label-owner and writer spans over 60 extraordinary years. On the day his monumental "journey through Global Music" And the Roots of Rhythm Remain is published, the peerless Joe Boyd visits RBP's Hammersmith HQ to talk about the book — and the 17+ years it took to write the follow-up to 2006's acclaimed memoir White Bicycles. After we hear about the 1987 meeting that led to the adoption of the now-discredited term "World Music" as a marketing category, discussion touches on the sound, rhythms and political impact of music from South Africa, Brazil, Bulgaria and — inevitably — Jamaica. Clips from John Hutchinson's 1982 audio interview with the late great Kate McGarrigle – mother of Rufus and Martha Wainwright — lead to our guest's recollections of working with her and sister Anna on their magical eponymous debut in 1975. Joe also reminisces about Junco Partner, the 1976 album he made with New Orleans piano genius James Booker. Talk of the week's featured RBP writer Robert Shelton — coinciding with the imminent reissue of the latter's epic Bob Dylan biography No Direction Home — prompts memories of the late New York Times critic from Joe, who (lest we forget) worked as stage manager at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival in which Dylan first "went electric". Many thanks to special guest Joe Boyd. And the Roots of Rhythm Remain is published by Faber in the UK and Ze Books in the US; visit Joe's website joeboyd.co.uk for more details. Pieces discussed: Joe Boyd: Freaky Galahad, Joe Boyd: An Interview, Joe Boyd on White Bicycles, Kate McGarrigle audio, Bob Dylan at Gerde's Folk City, New York, Pop Singers and Song Writers Racing Down Bob Dylan's Road and Bob Dylan: How does it feel on your own?.

Escuchar audio

Alice Howe's vibe is Jackson Browne & Bonnie Raitt, but also Joan Baez and old English ballads. Her musical life was changed in 2016 when she met Freebo, legendary musician who's played with Bonnie Raitt, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Maria Muldaur, Kate & Anna McGarrigle and many others. Freebo and Alice instantly connected through music and their collaboration has led to many shows together and the production of her debut album visions. We talk about their musical partnership as well as her family. Her dad was a very talented painter turned architect. He died when Alice was 18 and she shared his influence on her art, music and life outlook. After graduating from Smith College, she moved to Seattle and worked at a guitar show learning priceless info about instruments, gear and life in general. Now in Los Angeles, Alice is in the middle of working on a project at FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, AL. I've enjoyed getting to know Alice! We didn't know each other before quarantine, but before this interview we coincidentally worked together on troubleshooting live streaming shows, which is a fast way to make a good friend or a life-long enemy. In this week's episode, we welcome special guest James Fox, author of 1982's bestselling White Mischief and the man who, ten years ago, made Keith Richards' Life one of rock's outstanding autobiographies. James talks us through his long and distinguished career as a journalist in Africa, and as a features writer during the golden era of The Sunday Times Magazine. He describes how his friendship with "Keef" was cemented by the pieces he wrote for that publication about the Rolling Stones in 1973 and 1976, answering his hosts' questions about the great man's rhythm guitar playing. The fantastic Mr. Fox also offers his perspective on Little Richard, whose death last week prompts discussion of the gay black southerner's explosive role in the birth of rock & roll. We hear a clip of the sometime Mr. Penniman speaking in 1985 – as well as one of the late Betty ('Clean Up Woman') Wright owning up to being a shameless show-off in 1978. Handily, James is on hand, too, to reminisce about the importance of Moe Asch's legendary Folkways label – as revisited in the week's new audio interview, a conversation with folk elder Pete Seeger conducted by Tony Scherman in 1987. Clips follow of Seeger talking about Asch and recalling Folkways legends Lead Belly and Woody Guthrie. As ever, Mark guides us through his personal library highlights, including pieces about John Coltrane (1965), Deep Purple (1970), Ashford & Simpson (1982) and Billy Idol (1990). Jasper concludes matters with quotes from pieces about Joanna Newsom (2015), JPEGMAFIA (2017) and, erm, James Blunt (2020).Many thanks to special guest James Fox—visit his website at jamesfox.co.uk.The Rock's Backpages podcast is proud to be part of the Pantheon podcast network.Pieces discussed: Keith Richards' guitar playing, Rolling Stones, Papa Wemba, Little Richard, Little Richarder, Little Richardest, Betty Wright, Betty Wrighter, Pete Seeger, John Coltrane Quartet, Velvet Underground and Nico, Kate and Anna McGarrigle, Ashford & Simpson, Billy Idol, Ice-T, Acid House, Joanna Newsom, JPEGMAFIA and James Blunt.

With her stirring voice, shrewd insight, and mischievous wit, Martha Wainwright's songs captivated the sold out crowd at Joe's Pub's live taping of Employee of the Month. Martha's super power is her range, both vocally and intellectually. It's why, as Martha explains in our conversation, Leonard Cohen, Pete Townsend, Garth Hudson, and Donald Fagin, and Snow Patrol wanted to work with her. We spoke about her starting to write in high school, and she created her first album, technically a cassette tape, Ground Floor, in 1997. Since then she went onto collaborate with her late mother and aunt, Kate and Anna McGarrigle, father Looudon Wainwright, older brother Rufus Wainwright, Teddy Thompson, and Garth Hudson. Shortly after this recording, Martha began singing backup vocals for her brother. She’s also released her own albums- Martha Wainwright,. I Know You're Married But I've Got Feelings Too, and a tribute album to Edith Piaf, amongst others. We also spoke about her foray into acting. Director Lisa...

Comedian Jennifer Saunders chooses The Q5 theme by Spike Milligan and Kate and Anna McGarrigle's song ‘Talk to me of Mendocino' sung by Kate and her children Rufus and Martha Wainwright.
Canadian-American singer-songwriter Rufus Wainwright can justifiably be described as a member of folk royalty. The son of Loudon Wainwright 3rd and the late Kate McGarrigle, he is also the nephew of Anna McGarrigle and brother of Martha Wainwright, all accomplished musicians in their own right. He describes about how he spent the first few weeks of his life sleeping in a guitar-case, sang with his family from an early age, and depended on them during the difficult periods of his life. His teenage years and his twenties heralded difficulties coming to terms with his sexuality and with drug addiction, but he continued to perform and write music throughout the hard times. Now married to artistic director Jorn Wiesbrodt, he is also a father of Lorca, whose mother is the daughter of Leonard Cohen. Obsessed with Verdi, he has composed his own opera, set Shakespeare sonnets to music and composed for the ballet. His choices include Verdi, Massenet, Messiaen, Nina Simone, Kurt Weill, Manuel de Falla, Berlioz and Judy Garland.
