Today's Topics: 1) Gospel - John 13:1-15 - Before the feast of Passover, Jesus knew that His hour had come to pass from this world to the Father. He loved his own in the world and He loved them to the end. The devil had already induced Judas, son of Simon the Iscariot, to hand Him over. So, during supper, fully aware that the Father had put everything into His power and that He had come from God and was returning to God, He rose from supper and took off His outer garments. He took a towel and tied it around His Waist. Then He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet and dry them with the towel around His Waist. He came to Simon Peter, who said to Him, “Master, are You going to wash my feet?” Jesus answered and said to him, “What I am doing, you do not understand now, but you will understand later.” Peter said to Him, “You will never wash my feet.” Jesus answered him,“Unless I wash you, you will have no inheritance with Me.” Simon Peter said to Him, “Master, then not only my feet, but my hands and head as well.” Jesus said to him, “Whoever has bathed has no need except to have his feet washed, for he is clean all over; so you are clean, but not all.” For He knew who would betray Him; for this reason, He said, “Not all of you are clean.” So when He had washed their feet and put His garments back on and reclined at table again, He said to them, “Do you realize what I have done for you? You call Me ‘Teacher' and ‘Master,' and rightly so, for indeed I am. If I, therefore, the Master and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash one another's feet. I have given you a model to follow, so that as I have done for you, you should also do.” Bishop Sheen quote of the day 2) Now is the perfect time for Trump to show the world that Christ is King https://www.lifesitenews.com/opinion/now-is-the-perfect-time-for-trump-to-remind-america-that-christ-is-king/ 3) Top 10 questions and answers about Holy Week https://www.catholic.com/tract/top-10-questions-and-answers-about-holy-week 4) Holy (Maundy) Thursday https://www.newadvent.org/cathen/07435a.htm

These gatherings provide a place to live out the “one another” commands of the New Testament. Through small groups, we build relationships that help us grow spiritually, serve together, and use our gifts to strengthen the church one relationship at a time. **(23:00 – 0:00)* * PART 1 What Are Spiritual Disciplines? Define spiritual disciplines as practices rooted in Scripture that help believers grow in their relationship with God. Key verse: “Discipline yourself for the purpose of godliness.” (1 Timothy 4:7) Meditation as a Spiritual Discipline Section 1: Biblical Meditation A. Introduction to Biblical Meditation Define meditation from a Biblical perspective: Focused, intentional contemplation of God's Word and works. A spiritual exercise focused on Scripture, involving contemplation and prayer Rooted in Scripture, with the goal of knowing God and aligning one's heart with His will. Differentiate Biblical meditation from Eastern meditation: C. Differences Between Eastern Meditation and Biblical Meditation (10 minutes) Focus: Eastern meditation often centers on self-awareness and inner peace, while biblical meditation focuses on God and His Word(Biblical Meditation vs. Eastern Meditation | Abide, n.d.). Eastern meditation emphasizes emptying the mind and achieving detachment. Biblical meditation emphasizes filling the mind with God's truth and cultivating intimacy with Him (Philippians 4:8). Posture: Eastern practices may emphasize physical posture (e.g., sitting cross-legged), whereas biblical meditation prioritizes the posture of the heart(Biblical Meditation vs. Eastern Meditation | Abide, n.d.). Worldview: Eastern meditation may promote the idea of achieving spiritual freedom or "nirvana," while biblical meditation acknowledges dependence on God and His grace(Biblical Meditation vs. Eastern Meditation | Abide, n.d.). B. Key Bible References (NKJV) Joshua 1:8 Psalm 1:1–2 Psalm 119:15–16 C. Biblical Examples of Meditation David Psalms filled with meditations on God's law, character, and works (e.g., Psalm 19:14). Isaac Genesis 24:63: Jesus Frequent times of solitude and prayer, often grounded in God's Word (Luke 5:16). D. The Purpose and Fruit of Biblical Meditation Deepening understanding of God's Word. Transforming the heart and mind (Romans 12:2). Encouraging obedience and spiritual growth. **(00:00) END PART 1** **(27:00 – 5:00) BEGIN PART 2** Section 2: Practical Help for Practicing Biblical Meditation A. Establishing a Biblical Framework for Meditation Set aside focused time daily (morning or evening). Create a quiet space free from distractions. Begin with prayer for understanding and insight (Psalm 119:18). B. Techniques for Practicing Meditation Select a Passage or Verse Choose a specific Scripture to meditate on, e.g., Psalms, Proverbs, or teachings of Jesus. Select verses or passages that resonate personally. What is God doing in your life now? Read and Reflect Read slowly and repeatedly, emphasizing different words or phrases. Ask Questions of the Text What does this reveal about God? What does this mean for my life today? Memorize and Internalize Commit verses to memory for ongoing meditation throughout the day. Techniques for Effective Meditation (10 minutes) Lectio Divina: Explain this ancient practice of slow, contemplative reading of Scripture. It is traditionally associated with monastic communities. The practice emphasizes a slow, meditative reading of the Bible, aiming not just to study Scripture but to experience it personally and prayerfully. The Four Steps of Lectio Divina: A. Lectio (Reading): B. Meditatio (Meditation): C. Oratio (Prayer): D.Contemplatio (Contemplation): Journaling: Encourage keeping a meditation journal to record thoughts and insights Incorporating Prayer: Discuss how to integrate prayer into meditation, asking God for understanding and application of His Word C. Overcoming Distractions Find a quiet, distraction-free location. Write down stray thoughts to address later. D. Using Tools to Enhance Meditation Journaling: Record insights and applications. Music: Listen to hymns or Scripture-based songs. E. Incorporating Meditation into Daily Life Meditate while walking, driving, or doing simple tasks. Reflect on sermons, Bible studies, or daily readings. **(5:00 – 1:00)** Doctrine of the Month - Salvation *The Need for Salvation * The Provision of Salvation *The Response to Salvation **(1:00)** - “Thank you for listening today! -If you enjoyed the show you can listen to all the past shows wherever you listen to podcasts. Psalm 63:6: When I remember You on my bed, I meditate on You in the night watches. Philippians 4:8: 8 Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things. 9 The things which you learned and received and heard and saw in me, these do, and the God of peace will be with you. Prayer - Mark 1:35: Now in the morning, having risen a long while before daylight, He went out and departed to a solitary place; and there He prayed. Luke 6:12: Now it came to pass in those days that He went out to the mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God. Matthew 6:5-13: Model Prayer Fasting- Matthew 4:1-2: 1 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. 2 And when He had fasted forty days and forty nights, afterward He was hungry. Matthew 6:16-18: 16“Moreover, when you fast, do not be like the hypocrites, with a sad countenance. For they disfigure their faces that they may appear to men to be fasting. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. 17But you, when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, 18so that you do not appear to men to be fasting, but to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly. Study - Luke 4:4, 8, 12: 3 And the devil said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread.” 4 But Jesus answered him, saying, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.' ” 5 Then the devil, taking Him up on a high mountain, showed Him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. 6 And the devil said to Him, “All this authority I will give You, and their glory; for this has been delivered to me, and I give it to whomever I wish. 7 Therefore, if You will worship before me, all will be Yours.” 8 And Jesus answered and said to him, “Get behind Me, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.' ” 9 Then he brought Him to Jerusalem, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down from here. 10 For it is written:‘He shall give His angels charge over you,To keep you,'11 and,‘In their hands they shall bear you up,Lest you dash your foot against a stone.' ”12 And Jesus answered and said to him, “It has been said, ‘You shall not tempt the Lord your God.' ” Luke 24:27: 25 Then He said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken! 26 Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into His glory?” 27 And beginning at Moses and all the Prophets, He expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself. Simplicity - It helps us set money, possessions, worldly accomplishments, and other material things in their proper perspective so that God is restored to the throne of our lives. Simplicity requires us to let go of practices, time commitments, thoughts, and relationships that contaminate body and spirit so that we can better reflect the image of Christ. The foundation of Christian simplicity is to seek first the Kingdom of God and trust that everything else will fall in its proper place. Matt 6:33: – 31 “Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?' or ‘What shall we drink?' or ‘What shall we wear?' 32 For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble. Solitude - The point of solitude is to refrain from talking so we are placed in a posture to listen. The more we do this, the better we become at discerning God's voice from our own. It requires us to trust that God will show up—but, we must not give up! Luke 5:16: "So He Himself often withdrew into the wilderness and prayed." Lamentations 3:25-26: 25 The Lord is good to those who wait for Him, To the soul who seeks Him. 26 It is good that one should hope and wait quietly. For the salvation of the Lord. Set at least a few minutes alone with God daily. Submission - Submission calls us to give up our plan for the good of others and the fulfillment of God's will. It is through self-sacrifice that we find joy and through carrying out God's will that our lives have meaning and purpose. James 4:7: 7 Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. 8 Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. 9 Lament and mourn and weep! Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. 10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up. Hebrews 13:17: - 15 Therefore by Him let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His name. 16 But do not forget to do good and to share, for with such sacrifices God is well pleased. 17 Obey those who rule over you, and be submissive, for they watch out for your souls, as those who must give account. Let them do so with joy and not with grief, for that would be unprofitable for you. Service - Service requires us to relinquish our rights for what we think we deserve to demonstrate God's sacrificial love. Our willingness to set our own desires aside to meet the needs of others stems from a deep relationship with God. Mark 10:45: 42 But Jesus called them to Himself and said to them, “You know that those who are considered rulers over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. 43 Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you shall be your servant. 44 And whoever of you desires to be first shall be slave of all. 45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.” John 13:12-17: 12 So when He had washed their feet, taken His garments, and sat down again, He said to them, “Do you know what I have done to you? 13 You call Me Teacher and Lord, and you say well, for so I am. 14 If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. 15 For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you. 16 Most assuredly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him. 17 If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.
John 13:1-32 Now before the Feast of the Passover, Jesus, knowing that His hour had come that He would depart from this world to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end. 2 And during supper, the devil having already put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon, to betray Him, 3 Jesus, knowing that the Father had handed all things over to Him, and that He had come forth from God and was going back to God, 4 *got up from supper and *laid His outer garments aside; and He took a towel and tied it around Himself. 5 Then He *poured water into the basin, and began washing the disciples' feet and wiping them with the towel which He had tied around Himself. 6 So He *came to Simon Peter. He *said to Him, “Lord, You are washing my feet?” 7 Jesus answered and said to him, “What I am doing, you do not realize right now, but you will understand later.” 8 Peter *said to Him, “Never shall You wash my feet!” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no place with Me.” 9 Simon Peter *said to Him, “Lord, then wash not only my feet, but also my hands and my head!” 10 Jesus *said to him, “He who has bathed needs only to wash his feet; otherwise he is completely clean. And you are clean—but not all of you.” 11 For He knew the one who was betraying Him; it was for this reason that He said, “Not all of you are clean.” 12 Then, when He had washed their feet, and taken His garments and reclined at the table again, He said to them, “Do you know what I have done for you? 13 You call Me ‘Teacher' and ‘Lord'; and you are correct, for so I am. 14 So if I, the Lord and the Teacher, washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. 15 For I gave you an example, so that you also would do just as I did for you. 16 Truly, truly I say to you, a slave is not greater than his master, nor is one who is sent greater than the one who sent him.17 If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them. 18 I am not speaking about all of you. I know the ones whom I have chosen; but this is happening so that the Scripture may be fulfilled, ‘He who eats My bread has lifted up his heel against Me.' 19 From now on I am telling you before it happens, so that when it does happen, you may believe that I am He. 20 Truly, truly I say to you, the one who receives anyone I send, receives Me; and the one who receives Me receives Him who sent Me.” 21 When Jesus had said these things, He became troubled in spirit, and testified and said, “Truly, truly I say to you that one of you will betray Me.” 22 The disciples began looking at one another, at a loss to know of which one He was speaking. 23 Lying back on Jesus' chest was one of His disciples, whom Jesus loved. 24 So Simon Peter *nodded to this disciple and *said to him, “Tell us who it is of whom He is speaking.” 25 He then simply leaned back on Jesus' chest and *said to Him, “Lord, who is it?” 26 Jesus then *answered, “That man is the one for whom I shall dip the piece of bread and give it to him.” So when He had dipped the piece of bread, He *took and *gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. 27 After this, Satan then entered him. Therefore Jesus *said to him, “What you are doing, do it quickly.” 28 Now none of those reclining at the tableknew for what purpose He had said this to him. 29 For some were assuming, since Judas kept the money box, that Jesus was saying to him, “Buy the things we need for the feast”; or else, that he was to give something to the poor. 30 So after receiving the piece of bread, he left immediately; and it was night. 31 Therefore when he had left, Jesus *said, “Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in Him; 32 if God is glorified in Him, God will also glorify Him in Himself, and will glorify Him immediately. "Jesus...laid aside His garments." Jn13:3-4 NKJVWhen it came to serving others, Jesus went first. He "rose from supper... laid aside His garments, took a towel and girded Himself... poured water into a basin...began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded...Peter said to Him, 'Lord, are You washing my feet?'" (vv. 4-6 NKJV). Try to imagine God incarnate with an apron on, kneeling to wash the feet of those who were unworthy. The Bible says, "Jesus... laid aside His garments." If you want to serve others, you must be willing to lay aside your image, your comfort, and your agenda. By laying aside His garments, Jesus demonstrated that God has no time for form or fashion. Real ministry isn't image conscious; it's done with complete disregard for distinction. But Peter didn't get it! He was embarrassed to think Jesus would let Himself be seen in such a demeaning light. So, Jesus said: "You call Me Teacher and Lord... If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you...If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them" (vv. 13-15, 17 NKJV). There are certain things in your life that must be set aside in order to serve others and do the will of God. If you want to be blessed, don't join those who delight in their own speeches and who trumpet their own accomplishments. Set aside everything you privately glory in and pick up the towel of servanthood. Don't wait for someone else to do it. You go first!Support the showChanging Lives | Building Strong Family | Impacting Our Community For Jesus Christ!
I greet you in Jesus' precious name! It is Wednesday morning, the 8th of November, 2023, and this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today. We start off in the Book of Isaiah 2:17: "The loftiness of man shall be bowed down,And the haughtiness of men shall be brought low;The Lord alone will be exalted in that day,…" Very, very powerful words. We need to be careful how we stand lest we fall. Then we go across to the Gospel of John 13:12-14 in the New Testament:"So when He had washed their feet, taken His garments, and sat down again, He said to them, "Do you know what I have done to you? You call Me Teacher and Lord, and you say well, for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet." Wow! A band of feet-washers, that's what we are! And who gave us the example? None other than the Lord Jesus Christ, Himself, Emmanuel - God made flesh. The best way to keep humble, and not to become proud and haughty, is to wash someone's feet. You see, you have to get down on your knees to wash someone's feet, you can't do it standing up. John Wesley, the great reformer, went all the way to Germany to learn from Count Zinzendorf, who was responsible for the Moravian church, which really shook the world, and do you know what happened? Count Zinzendorf put him in the garden. He had to look after all the vegetables and the flowers; this man who had a Master's Degree in Theology, was on his knees, tending the garden. That's how he taught him. I remember people telling me about the great evangelist Reinhard Bonke, who has been with Jesus now for a couple of years. He took Africa by storm, he preached to millions of people, live. They told me that after a meeting, when he would be exhausted, having prayed for the sick for hours and preaching the Gospel, they would be looking for him and he would be in a caravan with his team, his crew, and what would he be doing? Well, he had the apron on, didn't he? He was cooking supper for them at midnight! That is a mark of humility, a mark of a great man of God.I will never forget when I went to bonny Scotland, they told me that my dear old father had come over a few years before and had done very well in Africa, he had succeeded and became manager of an engineering company, that blacksmith, and he had his suit on. He was coming to visit some relatives on the small croft, a small farm. As he walked through the front gate, he saw that they had been cutting oats, and the oats were lying in the field. He took his suit jacket off, put it on a post - he was a very strong man, my dad - and started stooking the oats up for drying. They were amazed at his humility.Today, keep yourself humble and God will raise you up.Jesus bless you and goodbye.
So He (Jesus) came to Simon Peter. He said to Him, "Lord, do You wash my feet?" Jesus answered and said to him, "What I do you do not realize now, but you will understand hereafter." Peter said to Him, "Never shall You wash my feet!" Jesus answered him, "If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me." Simon Peter said to Him, "Lord, then wash not only my feet, but also my hands and my head." Jesus said to him, "He who has bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean; and you are clean, but not all of you." For He knew the one who was betraying Him; for this reason He said, "Not all of you are clean." So when He had washed their feet, and taken His garments and reclined at the table again, He said to them, "Do you know what I have done to you? "You call Me Teacher and Lord; and you are right, for so I am. "If I then, your Lord and the Teacher, washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. "For I gave you an example that you also should do as I did to you. "Truly, truly, I say to you, a slave is not greater than his master, nor is one who is sent greater than the one who sent him. "If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them. John 13:1-17 Jesus Washes the Disciples' Feet 1 Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that His hour had come that He should depart from this world to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end. 2 And supper being ended, the devil having already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray Him, 3 Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He had come from God and was going to God, 4 rose from supper and laid aside His garments, took a towel and girded Himself. 5 After that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded. 6 Then He came to Simon Peter. And Peter said to Him, "Lord, are You washing my feet?" 7 Jesus answered and said to him, "What I am doing you do not understand now, but you will know after this." 8 Peter said to Him, "You shall never wash my feet!" Jesus answered him, "If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me." 9 Simon Peter said to Him, "Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head!" 10 Jesus said to him, "He who is bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean; and you are clean, but not all of you." 11 For He knew who would betray Him; therefore He said, "You are not all clean." 12 So when He had washed their feet, taken His garments, and sat down again, He said to them, "Do you know what I have done to you? 13 "You call Me Teacher and Lord, and you say well, for so I am. 14 "If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. 15 "For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you. 16 "Most assuredly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him. 17 "If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.
On that final evening in the upper room, Jesus did something that turned our world upside down. Normally, humans think that the more important a person is the more that person should be served and honored. We think important people are too dignified to do lowly tasks. We look for ways to give them special care. We give them the best seat, the best portion, the best of everything. They become the focus of our attention and adulation. So it's no wonder humans strive to become important. In countless ways, in countless areas of life, people everywhere maneuver, compete, and even battle for position. They want to become important and enjoy the rewards that come with it. But on that final evening, in the upper room, Jesus did something that turned all of that upside down. He, the Lord and Teacher, picked up a towel and washbasin, and washed His disciples' feet. The most important person in the room, the most important person in the world, did the lowliest act of service. He did what a household servant would normally have done in most homes: He washed their dusty feet. His humility was shocking; it felt inappropriate; it made everyone uncomfortable; it was awkward. The man many in Israel believed was the promised Messiah, the man with such power He could still a storm and raise dead people to life, the man so skilled in His knowledge of the Scriptures He could silence the nation's most senior religious leaders, the man who couldn't step into a public place without thousands rushing to hear Him and trying to touch His cloak, knelt down and, one by one, with His hands washed the dust and sweat off His disciples' feet. There can be little doubt that they watched Him in stunned silence. Each disciple must have glanced at the other with that questioning look which asks, “What's He doing?” Peter, of course, broke the silence and tried to resist, but was quickly corrected. Then, when He had finished, Jesus returned to His place at the table and said this: “Do you know what I have done to you? You call Me Teacher and Lord; and you are right, for [so] I am. If I then, the Lord and Teacher, washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. For I gave you an example (a pattern to be copied) that you should also do as I did to you. Truly, truly, I say to you, a slave is not greater than his master, nor [is] one who is sent greater than the one who sent him. If you know these things you are blessed if you do them.” (Jn 13:12-17) On that final evening, in the upper room, He modeled the attitude which must be in every true disciple: a love for God and others that is so strong it causes us to cast aside our desire for honor and gladly take up the lowliest place of service. He said if He could do such humble service, then surely we, His disciples, could do the same. Since we love Him and desire to obey Him, let's try to discover what it means to wash one another's feet.
John 13:13 You call Me Teacher and Lord; and you are right, for so I am. Welcome to today's Live to Love Scripture Encouragement. Today's verse is John 13:13. “You call Me teacher and Lord; and you are right for so I am.” This verse makes me ask myself four questions. 1. What is Jesus to me? Which leads to 2. What is my relationship to Him? 3. Do I call Jesus Teacher and Lord? 4. Am I His student and servant? I'm thinking that the answers to these questions are related to my living to love with Jesus. Let's let these questions search us today. Acknowledgment: Music from “Carried by the Father” by Eric Terlizzi. www.ericterlizzi.com
“Having a Kenosis Encounter”(Philippians 2:5-11 ) (07/16/21) THEME: Chapter 2 “Have the MIND of Christ” Vs. 5 “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:…” This exhortation finds its definition in vs. 2:2-4 …a) To THINK the same thing, b) HAVE the same Love …c) To be in HEART UNITY or agreement d) carry oneself in a ‘low running mind'(humility) ..e) To see to it that your Brethren EXCELL/SURPASS You Now in Phil. 2:6-8 we will see an illustration of what that means & how it applies to us GREEK Rendering: “This Be Ye Constantly THINKING in YOU ,which was also in Christ Jesus”………..The word THIS points us back to Phil. 2:4 for a definition of WHAT to constantly be THINKING “WHO” ( 2:6) connects the illustration(vs. 6-8) & definition (vs. 2-4)TOGETHER “Let This Mind Be” In GREEK ‘Let-Mind-Be' is ONE Word= PHRONEO= To have understanding, To DIRECT Ones Mind Towards a THING/CONCEPT…see II Timothy 1:7 (SOPHRONISMOS)…to seek or strive for , this word connotes to have in view the direction which the THINKING of a practical kind takes…understanding & marinating in THOUGHT “Was” Can be either was or IS BOTTOM LINE: The Philippians (US) should emulate in their lives the distinctive virtues spoken of regarding Jesus in 2-4..'these' traits were the direction our Lord's HABITUAL thoughts..so was or Is , vs. 6 Because our Lord STILL embodies the same mind as He always did. THERE IS MORE!! We do Not just Imitate CHRIST we have HIS MIND!! I Jn. 2:27 But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him. I Cr. 21-5 In the same way, my brothers, when I came to proclaim to you God's secret purpose, I did not come equipped with any brilliance of speech or intellect. You may as well know now that it was my secret determination to concentrate entirely on Jesus Christ and the fact of his death upon the cross. As a matter of fact, in myself I was feeling far from strong; I was nervous and rather shaky. What I said and preached had none of the attractiveness of the clever mind, but it was a demonstration of the power of the Spirit! Plainly God's purpose was that your faith should not rest upon man's cleverness but upon the power of God. 6-8 We do, of course, speak “wisdom” among those who are spiritually mature, but it is not what is called wisdom by this world, nor by the powers-that-be, who soon will be only the powers that have been. The wisdom we speak of is that mysterious secret wisdom of God which he planned before the creation for our glory today. None of the powers of this world have known this wisdom—if they had they would never have crucified the Lord of glory! 9-10a But as it is written: ‘Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love him'. But God has, through the Spirit, let us share his secret. 10b-12 For nothing is hidden from the Spirit, not even the deep wisdom of God. For who could really understand a man's inmost thoughts except the spirit of the man himself? How much less could anyone understand the thoughts of God except the very Spirit of God? And the marvelous thing is this, that we now receive not the spirit of the world but the Spirit of God himself, so that we can actually understand something of God's generosity towards us. This wisdom is only understood by the spiritual 13 It is these things that we talk about, not using the expressions of the human intellect but those which the Holy Spirit teaches us, explaining things to those who are spiritual. 14-16 But the unspiritual man simply cannot accept the matters which the Spirit deals with—they just don't make sense to him, for, after all, you must be spiritual to see spiritual things. The spiritual man, on the other hand, has an insight into the meaning of everything, though his insight may baffle the man of the world. This is because the former is sharing in God's wisdom, and ‘Who has known the mind of the Lord that he may instruct him?' Incredible as it may sound, we who are spiritual have the very thoughts(MIND) of Christ! PSALM 1 Vs. 6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: “FORM” (MORPHE-Greek) ..this word has no reference to the ‘shape' of any phys. Object as we think of it in our English language…”This word is used in its philosophical sense to denote THAT EXPRESSION of BEING which carries in itself the distinctive nature & character of the BEING to whom it pertains & is thus permanently IDENTIFIED with THAT NATURE & CHARACTER.”(Vincent)..ex. “The quarterbacks FORM was perfect today'' There is NO WORD in all the languages of the World to truly convey the DEPTHS of this meaning !!...this word(form) is used in a futile attempt to describe the essence of GOD's BEING & How He expresses Himself …our minds truly cannot CONCEIVE of this fully..even at times when He reveals Himself to us (Exodus 33:18-33) This word ‘MORPHE” used here is an outward expression of an inward & perfect Identity…see “TRANSFIGURATION”(Metamorphoo) ( 17:2..Mk. 9:2..II Cor. 3:18..Romans 12:2) Jesus was /Is the DIVINE Essence of GOD & He was & IS EXPRESSING it to Mankind from His Innermost being… 2:9 9 For the entire fullness of God's nature[a] dwells bodily[b] in Christ, (HCSB) HOWEVER……………………………………………. “Thought It Not Robbery” …Robbery means a thing unlawfully seized & a treasure to be clutched & kept at all costs”(seems to be 2 different meanings) CONTEXT in this passage ‘rules' as to the meaning of this phrase…so basically (see vs. 2-4) Jesus Gave up His rights to Express His divine NATURE (The MORPHE)..Jesus gave up the rights to HIS RIGHTS…we will see this further TRS. 6 who, although He existed in the form and unchanging essence of God [as One with Him, possessing the fullness of all the divine attributes—the entire nature of deity], did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped or asserted [as if He did not already possess it, or was afraid of losing it];(AMP) Jesus did not consider it ROBBERY to be = w/ABBA, yet he did NOT attempt to grasp it Though It was His right. 7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: Jesus did not see the TREASURE of His Expression of Deity as something to be Seized & kept at all costs…But rather he willingly gave this up..He relinquished His rights to that expression Jesus experienced & participated in Kenosis ( emptied Himself) = trs. Of ‘Made Himself of No Reputation' “The Form of A Servant” again as in vs. 6 MORPHE= Form…Servant = is a word Paul used in 1:1 when he described Himself as a BONDSLAVE GREEK grammar construction implies that Jesus FIRST took on the role of a BONDSLAVE Before he ‘Emptied Himself' (participated in KENOSIS)..by taking on the role of a BONDSLAVE caused him to participate IN KENOSIS…so we could say it this way….'Having Taken the FORM of a BOND SLAVE, Jesus Emptied Himself' Opposite in a way of vs 6….Jesus Gave up His Lordship in a sense to SERVE us…He emptied out Himself FOR US!... 20:28 Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many…He was exchanging DEITY /Lordship…for servanthood By the Act of KENOSIS Jesus totally obliterated His self-Life & emptied himself of every OUNCE of Deity For the Philippians KENOSIS was the Key to UNITY ***Jesus came to Live & Show us How ABBA Intended A Man/Woman to LIVE that was fully dependent on HIM*** I CR15:45-49 45 So it is written: The first man Adam became a living being;[m] the last Adam became a life-giving Spirit. 46 However, the spiritual is not first, but the natural, then the spiritual. 47 The first man was from the earth and made of dust; the second man is[n] from heaven. 48 Like the man made of dust, so are those who are made of dust; like the heavenly man, so are those who are heavenly. 49 And just as we have borne the image of the man made of dust, we will also bear the image of the heavenly man. John 13:1-17 Jesus washes the disciples feet…………….(vs. 12-17) When Jesus had washed their feet and put on His robe, He reclined[a] again and said to them, “Do you know what I have done for you? 13 You call Me Teacher and Lord. This is well said, for I am. 14 So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. 15 For I have given you an example that you also should do just as I have done for you16 “I assure you: A slave is not greater than his master,[b] and a messenger is not greater than the one who sent him. 17 If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them MTT. 26:7-13 7 a woman approached Him with an alabaster jar of very expensive fragrant oil. She poured it on His head as He was reclining at the table. 8 When the disciples saw it, they were indignant. “Why this waste?” they asked. 9 “This might have been sold for a great deal and given to the poor.” 10 But Jesus, aware of this, said to them, “Why are you bothering this woman? She has done a noble thing for Me. 11 You always have the poor with you, but you do not always have Me. 12 By pouring this fragrant oil on My body, she has prepared Me for burial. 13 I assure you: Wherever this gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be told in memory of her.” 8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. “In Likeness of Men having BECOME” (Grk.) Fashion or appearance Humbled = To bring Low..like ‘run low' This is not the emptying part but refers to the self- humiliation of death on the Cross A death of Ignominy & degradation HEBREWS 5:7-8 7 During His earthly life,[a] He offered prayers and appeals with loud cries and tears to the One who was able to save Him from death, and He was heard because of His reverence. 8 Though He was God's Son, He learned obedience through what He suffered.(HCSB) 1:14 The Word became flesh[a] and took up residence[b] among us. We observed His glory, the glory as the One and Only Son[c] from the Father, full of grace and truth.(HCSB) ** It was Not just Enough for Jesus to show US How a Person Fully dependent on ABBA should Live..BUT In Giving Up His Rights As God's Favored Son , He was fully able to Bear & take On ALL the world's Injury, SIN & Insults ,ultimately resulting In His WILLING Death On the Cross** LUKE 9:23-24 23 And He was saying to them all, “If anyone wants to come after Me, he must deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow Me. 24 For whoever wants to save his [a]life will lose it, but whoever loses his [b]life for My sake, this is the one who will save it.( NASB) Hebrews 12:2 looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. VS.9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: (VS. 9) “WHEREFORE/Also” that is, because of Jesus voluntarily humbling Himself God has highly exalted Him “Highly Exalted” The Grk. Construction of this term means ‘to exalt to the highest rank & power , to raise to supreme majesty', that is, a SUPER- EMINENT exaltation. “Given” as also in Romans 8:32 He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?....Given & Freely given in these vs. are the Grk. Word ‘Charizomai'…to show favor, grant, bestow, forgive… This is speaking in regard to our Salvation that God freely gave to us through Jesus AS WELL as here ABBA bestowing on the Man Christ Jesus HIS EXALTED position …because he voluntarily subjected Himself to the subordinate position as “Sin-Bearer on the Cross”…OTHER TRS……”Freely Bestowed” (Vincent)…”Gave” (Lightfoot)…GRACIOUSLY GIVEN (Thayer) Not just A NAME but THE NAME…the definite article appearing In the Greek language REFERS to a PARTICULAR NAME…THE NAME is a common Hebrew Title which denotes office, rank, or dignity…see “The Name of God” in the O.T. = Divine Presence, Divine Majesty, adoration & Praise CONTEXT HERE: Points to the Honor & Praise BESTOWED on Jesus as one who was GIVEN…THE NAME..The Man Christ Jesus was who was elevated to the HEIGHT Exaltation of Supreme DEITY John 17:5And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was. Every Jew reading this would know immediately what Paul meant, because in the Jewish scriptures there was a name that was never pronounced. They called him the Ineffable Tetragrammaton. Ineffable means unspeakable, unpronounceable. Tetragrammaton means four letters, YHWH . It was the name YHWH—Jehovah..Christ Won This position through His Resurrection! VS.10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; “That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow” = It is at THE NAME that belongs to & was GIVEN to Jesus at His exaltation to which every knee will bow AT should Be IN The NAME is the Spiritual Metron/Sphere in which every prayer should be offered & to which every knee shall bow All CREATION will give Honor & Homage to THE NAME ISAIAH 45:22-23Turn to Me and be saved, all the ends of the earth. For I am God, and there is no other. 23 By Myself I have sworn; Truth has gone from My mouth, a word that will not be revoked: Every knee will bow to Me, every tongue will swear allegiance. ROMANS 14:10-12 But you, why do you criticize your brother? Or you, why do you look down on your brother? For we will all stand before the tribunal of God.[a]11 For it is written: As I live, says the Lord, every knee will bow to Me, and every tongue will give praise to God.[b] 12 So then, each of us will give an account of himself to God. ACTS 2:33Therefore, since He has been exalted to the right hand of God and has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit, He has poured out what you both see and hear. 11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. “CONFESS” means to openly or plainly confess, that is to AGREE with someone, this word also means to publically Declare….this word Confess is often associated with praise & Thanksgiving JUST what does Lord mean? Lord means he has the right to everything he surveys. In Scotland he is called, the Laird. The Laird of the castle has the right to ownership and authority, who holds the key to everything-the one who has mastered all the forces he controls and is perfectly at ease in every situation he encounters. Paul says Christ is the one who has won that position because he unhesitatingly and unreservedly committed himself to all that was involved in the mind of Christ, that attitude of his own heart that led him first to mortality, then to ignominy, and finally to unequalled glory. CONCLUSION…………………………………………………………. YOU WILL ONLY RECEIVE THE MIND OF CHRIST TO THE DEGREE THAT YOU BELIEVE & RECEIVE IT! RESULT: Peace & The End of Conflict Paul is saying here: let the mind of Christ, involving the renunciation of your rights and the willingness to accept injury break through in your life. Accept these conditions as God's will for you. This is why you have Christ in you. Accept the hurt without complaint, and without fail he will bring you through to victory and to peace. ISAIAH 26:3 Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.
A Sermon by Pastor Richard Sfameni, Lead Pastor of Victory Church in Providence, RI. John 13:1-38 Jesus Washes the Disciples' Feet 13 Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that His hour had come that He should depart from this world to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end. 2 And [a]supper being ended, the devil having already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray Him, 3 Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He had come from God and was going to God, 4 rose from supper and laid aside His garments, took a towel and girded Himself. 5 After that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded. 6 Then He came to Simon Peter. And Peter said to Him, “Lord, are You washing my feet?” 7 Jesus answered and said to him, “What I am doing you do not understand now, but you will know after this.” 8 Peter said to Him, “You shall never wash my feet!” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me.” 9 Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head!” 10 Jesus said to him, “He who is bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean; and you are clean, but not all of you.” 11 For He knew who would betray Him; therefore He said, “You are not all clean.” 12 So when He had washed their feet, taken His garments, and sat down again, He said to them, “Do you [b]know what I have done to you? 13 You call Me Teacher and Lord, and you say well, for so I am. 14 If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. 15 For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you. 16 Most assuredly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him. 17 If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them. Jesus Identifies His Betrayer 18 “I do not speak concerning all of you. I know whom I have chosen; but that the Scripture may be fulfilled, ‘He who eats [c]bread with Me has lifted up his heel against Me.' 19 Now I tell you before it comes, that when it does come to pass, you may believe that I am He. 20 Most assuredly, I say to you, he who receives whomever I send receives Me; and he who receives Me receives Him who sent Me.” 21 When Jesus had said these things, He was troubled in spirit, and testified and said, “Most assuredly, I say to you, one of you will betray Me.” 22 Then the disciples looked at one another, perplexed about whom He spoke. 23 Now there was [d]leaning on Jesus' bosom one of His disciples, whom Jesus loved. 24 Simon Peter therefore motioned to him to ask who it was of whom He spoke. 25 Then, leaning [e]back on Jesus' breast, he said to Him, “Lord, who is it?” 26 Jesus answered, “It is he to whom I shall give a piece of bread when I have dipped it.” And having dipped the bread, He gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon. 27 Now after the piece of bread, Satan entered him. Then Jesus said to him, “What you do, do quickly.” 28 But no one at the table knew for what reason He said this to him. 29 For some thought, because Judas had the money box, that Jesus had said to him, “Buy those things we need for the feast,” or that he should give something to the poor. 30 Having received the piece of bread, he then went out immediately. And it was night. The New Commandment 31 So, when he had gone out, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man is glorified, and God is glorified in Him. 32 If God is glorified in Him, God will also glorify Him in Himself, and glorify Him immediately. 33 Little children, I shall be with you a little while longer. You will seek Me; and as I said to the Jews, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come,' so now I say to you. 34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. 35 By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” Jesus Predicts Peter's Denial 36 Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord, where are You going?” Jesus answered him, “Where I am going you cannot follow Me now, but you shall follow Me afterward.” 37 Peter said to Him, “Lord, why can I not follow You now? I will lay down my life for Your sake.” 38 Jesus answered him, “Will you lay down your life for My sake? Most assuredly, I say to you, the rooster shall not crow till you have denied Me three times.

John records that: 'Jesus...rose from supper and laid aside His garments, took a towel and girded Himself...poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded. Then He came to Simon Peter. And Peter said to Him, 'Lord, are You washing my feet?" (Luke 13:3-6 NKJV) Jesus didn't wait for His disciples to make the first move, He went first. He taught that in order to serve God you must be willing to lay aside your IMAGE, your COMFORT and your AGENDA. And He dramatized it in a way His disciples would never forget. By laying aside His garments He showed them God has no time for form or fashion. Real ministry is not IMAGE CONSCIOUS; it's done with a complete LOSS of DISTINCTION. God incarnate clothed Himself in HUMILITY. Amazing! But Peter didn't get it. He was embarrassed to think that His Lord would allow Himself to be seen in such demeaning light. So Jesus said, 'You call Me Teacher and Lord...lf l then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. For l have given you an EXAMPLE, that you should do as l have done to you...lf you know these things, blessed are you if you do them' (John 13:13-17 NKJV). If you want to be blessed, don't join the 'SPIRITUAL ELITISTS' who are impressed by their own speeches and display their own accomplishments. Lay aside everything you privately glory in and pick up the TOWEL OF SERVANT-HOOD. And don't wait for others. Somebody at your table needs to START a TREND. Today let it be you! God's servant Rev Alfred Acheampong Prayer Point: Heavenly Father, today l pick up the towel of servant-hood, so l could serve God and humanity in humility and love in Jesus name. 68 In this episode, I take a break from putting on the Armor of God to take about Good Friday.Today is April 2nd, 2021, and it's Good Friday ( I call it God Friday in the episode), and I use the example of the Rich young ruler to illustrate the reason Good, and God can be used interchangeably.Mark 10:17-20Notice the man dropped the "good" after Jesus said (I'm paraphrasing) either call Me God or call Me Teacher. This young ruler could not call Jesus Lord because he showed him where he was trusting in something besides God. (his riches)I wanted to give God glory on Good Friday. I hope you are ok with the break from the armor of God, but this was the biggest Spiritual Warfare battle of all time, and I thought it was appropriate to include it in this lesson.

Therefore Jesus said to him, “What you do, do quickly.” 28 Now no one of those reclining at the table knew for what purpose He had said this to him. 29 For some were supposing, because Judas had the money box, that Jesus was saying to him, “Buy the things we have need of for the feast”; or else, that he should give something to the poor. 30 So after receiving the morsel he went out immediately; and it was night.31 Therefore when he had gone out, Jesus said, “Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in Him; 32 if God is glorified in Him, God will also glorify Him in Himself, and will glorify Him immediately.
You are the Best of All Time You can change the history of your family tree. You have been given a position of authority in your daily life. Legacy is passing down to a generation in a way that is better than you found it. What we leave in people is greater than what we leave to people. John 3:16 - "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life." John 3:16 NKJV Because of this, we can change the world. Parable of seed and sower We don't get to pick and choose who we love. Jesus loves us all. We may not see the harvest of the seeds we plant and what we pour into. Look at what we do with people one a time. That makes us world changers. We are meant to be poured into, then leak out to others around us. We can only pour out what we are filled with. "Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He had come from God and was going to God, rose from supper and laid aside His garments, took a towel and girded Himself. After that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded." John 13:3-5 NKJV Jesus knew his authority came from God. "So when He had washed their feet, taken His garments, and sat down again, He said to them, "Do you know what I have done to you? You call Me Teacher and Lord, and you say well, for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you. Most assuredly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him. If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them." John 13:12-17 NKJV Esther didn't compromise her values. She changed a nation on assignment from God. She was the least likely to change the nation, but God made her a hero. God knows you for your destiny and not for your history. "For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?" Matthew 16:26 NKJV Is everything we do for Him? Jesus is our example of how to live. Will you stop for the one? Or is it only for the crowd? What did Jesus do? "And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ." Colossians 3:23-24 NKJV
A daily devotional through the recorded words Jesus spoke while He walked alongside us. Our website http://alittlewalkwithgod.com. Thanks for joining me today for "A Little Walk with God." I'm your host Richard Agee. Have you ever been the victim of betrayal? Have you ever betrayed someone? There are always consequences, you know. Scripture John 13:12-20 Jesus: Do you understand what I have done to you? You call Me Teacher and Lord, and truly, that is who I am. So if your Lord and Teacher washes your feet, then you should wash one another's feet. I am your example; keep doing what I do. I tell you the truth: a servant is not greater than the master. Those who are sent are not greater than the one who sends them. If you know these things, and if you put them into practice, you will find happiness. I am not speaking about all of you. I know whom I have chosen, but let the Hebrew Scripture be fulfilled that says, “The very same man who eats My bread with Me will stab Me in the back.” Assuredly, I tell you these truths before they happen so that when it all transpires, you will believe that I am. I tell you the truth: anyone who accepts the ones I send accepts Me. In turn, the ones who accept Me also accept the One who sent Me. Devotional It's been a lot of years and I won't mention any names, but a fellow officer in one of the units to which I was assigned was a good friend...I thought. We often ate lunch together. We shared techniques in leading our units that worked and those that didn't work so well so we helped each other. Families spent time together after work during our leisure hours. Thought we were good friends One day things changed Had an inspection and some things were missing from his unit Accountable, but consumable Used up in training, but had to account for their use and replace because of alert status His soldiers got lazy and didn't do the proper paperwork to account for the consumables after one training event and so there was a shortage I was accused of stealing Took less than an hour to show the paper trail to prove no one in my unit took any of his consumables. All mine were accounted for and a trail for when and where each came from Pain came from the betrayal We were friends He knew my character He knew I wouldn't tolerate such behavior from anyone under my authority Still he accused me to try to cover his soldiers' failure “The one who ate bread with me, stabbed me in the back.” My friend left the service very soon after that event Nothing of what Jesus felt Judas sat as His feet continually Listened to His teaching Said he believed what the Master taught Said he believed Jesus to be the Son of God Would soon betray Him to the high priest and the Sanhedrin He would die because Judas decided to betray his friend You just don't know the consequences that will come as a result of betrayal My friend ended his career Judas hung himself Jesus died on a cross Be careful of betraying your friends If you want to learn more about my church, you can find us at SAF.church. Many times we wonder, "What's next for my relationship with God?" or even "What's missing in my relationship with Him?" In this message series, we explore some of the most important steps you can take in your walk with God. Your Next Steps: "Serving" Romans 12: 2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect. #1. We are called by God to serve. John 13: 12-17 So when He had washed their feet, and taken His garments and reclined at the table again, He said to them, “Do you know what I have done to you? 13 You call Me Teacher and Lord; and you are right, for so I am. 14 If I then, the Lord and the Teacher, washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. 15 For I gave you an example that you also should do as I did to you. 16 Truly, truly, I say to you, a slave is not greater than his master, nor is one who is sent greater than the one who sent him. 17 If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them. #2. We are equipped for service. II Peter 1: 3 seeing that His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence. I Corinthians 12: 7 But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. I Peter 4: 10 As each one has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. Romans 12: 6a Since we have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, each of us is to exercise them accordingly: #3. Serving keeps us in a good place. the benefits of serving to your life... - serving brings great blessing and fulfillment John 13: 17 If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them. John 12: 24 Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. Philippians 2: 9-11 For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus EVERY KNEE WILL BOW, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. III John 4 I have no greater joy than this, to hear of my children walking in the truth. - serving provides accountability in your life Matthew 18: 6 but whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to stumble, it would be better for him to have a heavy millstone hung around his neck, and to be drowned in the depth of the sea. - serving keeps you physically off the dangerous path Psalm 1: 1 How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, nor stand in the path of sinners, nor sit in the seat of scoffers.
This weekend, Pastor Robbie is sharing the second message in our “Every Day” series. There are so many things to think about in our lives, sometimes that can be overwhelming. In this series, we’re learning some of the most critical pieces to our daily walk with God.Every Day: "Look to Serve and Share"#1. I need a new approach to my life.Philippians 2: 3Do nothing from selfishness / jockeying for position / pushing yourself to the front or empty conceit / an overinflated view of self-importance, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves;reasons we struggle with thinking of others…-our nature-our American mindset-the church’s mindset-wrapped up in our own problems-don’t realize the hurt other people are facing-don’t remember what is at stake#2. Pastor Sean Christensen: August 21, 2011 Weeding Your Spiritual Garden, Part III, “Pride and Insecurity.” I'd like to invite you to turn to John 13. We've been in a series called “Weeding Your Spiritual Garden.” Today, we're going to talk about weeding out “Pride and Insecurity.” At first it may seem a little strange that we would be weeding out pride and insecurity; those two things seem like polar opposites. What we're actually going to see is they are the same thing. Pride and insecurity may look different, but they come from the same root. We're going to see how Jesus had neither. He didn't have pride, and He didn't have insecurity. We're about to see why He didn't. In John 13, Jesus is giving His final lesson on church leadership. These were His Disciples, and they were soon to become the Apostles of the church. They would be the very first ones to preach the Gospel, to lead the church, to guide the church, to expand the church throughout the Roman Empire and beyond. These were the ones He was investing in; these were the ones who knew Him. It was vital that these guys would get leadership right, and thus far they hadn't. Their mentality was the same as everyone else's mentality-that position and power was what counted. They lived in a society that was a very hierarchical society where everyone had their level, their social strata, that existed. We have it a little bit in the United States, but not much. In that culture, the whole society was held together by the hierarchy that existed, so everybody knew how to treat those above them and how to treat those below them. That is exactly how it is in Haiti as well (Pastor Sean and his family are missionaries in Haiti). The Haitian system is very, very similar as to how you fit in. You have children, unskilled workers, skilled laborers, businessmen, clergy, and then your politicians and people of power on top. Jesus' Disciples that were rabbi or Disciples of a rabbi had status, had position, authority, and standing in that culture; and that is exactly the way it is in Haiti. We're going to see how Jesus handles that and teaches them-not man's way, but God's way. Let's look in John 13:1 (page 1066 of pew Bibles). “It was just before the Passover Feast. Jesus knew that the time had come for Him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved His own who were in the world, He now showed them the full extent of His love. “The evening meal was being served, and the devil had already prompted Judas Iscariot, son of Simon, to betray Jesus. Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under His power, and that He had come from God and was returning to God; so He got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around His waist. After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash His Disciple's feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around Him. “He came to Simon Peter, who said to Him, ‘Lord, are you going to wash my feet?' “Jesus replied, ‘You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand' “‘No,' said Peter, ‘You shall never wash my feet.' “Jesus answered, ‘Unless I wash you, you have no part with Me.' “‘Then, Lord,' Simon Peter replied, ‘not just my feet but my hands and my head as well!' “Jesus answered, ‘A person who has had a bath needs only to wash his feet; his whole body is clean. And you are clean, though not every one of you.' For He knew who was going to betray Him, and that was why He said not everyone was clean. “When He had finished washing their feet, He put on His clothes and returned to His place. ‘Do you understand what I have done for you?' He asked them. ‘You call Me “Teacher” and “Lord,” and rightly so, for that is what I am. Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another's feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. I tell you the truth, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.” Jesus offers us a blessing of washing feet. That's really symbolic of a loving act of humble service in everyday life. That's what He did-washing feet was an everyday life kind-of-thing. It wasn't special; it wasn't unique; it wasn't ceremonial. It wasn't heroic; it was a very menial task, but it was a loving task of humble service in everyday life that Jesus did. We talked about Jesus in that role as rabbi. Rabbis did not wash people's feet. You see, washing feet was considered a very humiliating task. In the social strata of first century Israel, a rabbi would never do something like that-neither would the husband of a home where you were invited to attend a meal. The husband, or the man of the house, would not do that, and neither would the wife. If they had a maid who helped with the cooking or cleaning, she would not do that. She was too high in the status to wash feet. Neither would the gardener who helped with the outside work. If they had a Hebrew slave, a Jewish slave who had special civil rights, he had the right to refuse to wash feet. He had to do everything else his master told him to do; but for washing feet, he had the civil right in Jewish law to refuse to do that because it was so low, so disgusting, and so dirty. “No, I won't do that.” So who had to wash feet? The lowest on the totem pole washed the feet-maybe a kid or the lowest slave in a household. That is who washed feet. That, of course, is what Jesus chose to do-the very lowest thing. In our culture, because we're not a hierarchical culture, this is hard for us to really grasp. We can kind of get the idea, the concept, but for it to really affect us emotionally, it's really hard for us because we don't relate like that. We don't understand, so let me try to put this in an illustration that makes sense to us. Let's imagine that Muammar Gaddafi, the president of Libya, happens to be in Janesville this weekend. You hear about it, and you make arrangements to have him over to your home for supper-not to poison him, but to show him hospitality as a good Christian (congregation laughing). Muammar Gaddafi accepts, and he comes over to your home. Let's also imagine that in your home you have an elderly infirm grandfather lying on a hospital bed in his room, and he soils his garments right at the time that the meal is about to be served. Muammar Gaddafi called himself the king of kings when he was introduced to the United Nations a few years ago and addressed the entire UN counsel and assembly. He was introduced as, “The King of Kings, Muammar Gaddafi.” He doesn't have a real inferiority complex, I don't think [sarcastically-speaking]. The king of kings hears that this person needs his Depends changed. He says, “Oh, I'll do it. Don't bother yourself. You're working on the meal. I'll take care of it for you. I'd be glad to.” Would that happen? No. That would not even be a spark of a thought in his head, and neither would this be for any other rabbi in first century Israel. Only Jesus had this idea, and that is what it was like. That's why Peter freaked out about it and said, “What?!? You want to wash my feet?” Jesus answered, “You don't understand!” “No, You can't! This disrupts the whole system! We have this hierarchy you see, and this is how our whole social fabric fits together and works! That's weird! That's wrong! No, You can't!” Jesus said, “No, I have to change your diaper!” In fact, He has changed each of our diapers-the filth of our sin, of our idolatry, of our putting anything before God in our hearts' priorities, motivations, and desires-which everyone of us here has done; I have as well-even though God has made us for Himself, created us to know, love, worship Him, and have Him be the motivation-His glory, His honor-love for Him and others [we all still have had idolatry to something other than Him]. Anyone here have that motivation every time? Any of us have that motivation ever? Perfectly. This is why we need a Savior, and that's exactly what Jesus did. He died for our idolatry, our lack of faith, our lack of love, our lack of loyalty to our God. This King of kings did the lowest of the low. My question is how did He do it because He tells us to do the same thing. I ask myself, “How can I do that? I can try to beat myself into the discipline of going around doing really humiliating things.” In the history of the church, there is a lot of that where people would humble themselves by wearing sackcloth and ugly clothing and whipping themselves as though that's what Jesus is talking about here. Is that doing anybody any good? Is that really humility? The fact is you can look like a pauper and be very proud about it because you're doing something “sacrificial for God. Aren't I awesome?” That's not humility. You're still fully focused on you, so that is the exact opposite of humility. For people who feel very, very low and “oh, I'm not worthy. Nobody likes me,” is that humility? What's that person consumed with? Himself or herself. That isn't humility either. That's why I say insecurity and pride look different, but it is still an orientation of the heart that is fully consumed with “me.” Jesus wasn't like that. How do we do loving acts of humble service in everyday life? We learn from Him. Let's take a look at Verse 3. The Apostle John, one of the closest Disciples of Jesus, had keen insight into who Jesus was and what He was like, and he shared a little psychological background that we wouldn't know otherwise. He clues us into the secret of how Jesus could do this and how we can too. Jesus knew who He was. Do you know who you are? Let's see what Jesus knew about Himself. John 13:3 (page 1066) says, “Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under His power…” That's pretty heavy right there. Every sun, star, moon, galaxy, supernova; every angel and demon; every king, every kingdom; every nation, every river, every mountain; every society, every thing and the eternal destiny of every human was under His power. He would have every reason to have an ego trip on that, you know? It doesn't get higher than that, and He knew it. In fact, the Greek here talks about a continuation of knowledge of Jesus knowing that all things were under His power. Jesus knew that He came from God. Talk about a noble birth! He didn't just have an ancestor that was a King somewhere. No, He came from God-the King-and He was returning to God. It wasn't like He was exiled, banished, or wasn't good enough for Heaven; therefore He was sent down. No, He was on a Heavenly mission. He was soon to return, and He knew it. He knew He was going to return to a major parade when He got back. So if this were you and I, we would begin Verse 4 with-despite this understanding, despite this self-awareness, “Jesus then disrobed, wrapped a towel around His waist, and began to do the most humble thing you could do in that society-wash feet.” We would put it this way, “…even though Jesus knew all things were under His power, nevertheless, He washed His Disciples' feet.” But, of course, that's not at all what the Scriptures say. The Scriptures do not show these two realities in contrast to one another. It actually says, “…knowing this, therefore, He did the humblest thing He could.” This tells me that that is how Jesus could do it. He was not consumed with the enslaving fear that His Disciples would reject Him if He did something so humiliating-that they would somehow think less of Him, look down upon Him, and not follow Him anymore because He would do something so low and so odd. Here He was up here, and they wanted to be up there with Him; yet He did the lowest thing. “No, we don't want to follow that kind of rabbi.” Jesus could have been thinking, “What if they think that? What if after all this time I just lose everything right before I'm about to be done with my ministry? What if it all crashes because I would do something so humiliating?” Do you think that was in His head at all? Verse 3 tells us it wasn't. What was in His head was who He was. That's what He was thinking. That's what He was focused on-what His identity was in relationship to His father, to God. My dear friends, that's the ticket for us as well. If our identity is wrapped up not in our occupation, not in our neighbor, the size of our house, how many boats we have, what our hobbies are-if our identities are consumed with God, with our Father in Heaven whom Jesus consistently refers to, “Your Father in Heaven, Your Father in Heaven, Your Father in Heaven,” I think He's trying to communicate something here. This is exactly what John is telling us about Jesus. Because Jesus was so consumed with the love of God that He knew who He was, He knew He had the approval of God-the favor of God, the accolades of God, that God was with Him, behind Him, for Him, loving Him-He could do anything no matter how humiliating or no matter how courageous. He could do it because He did not live out of emptiness, trying to get other people to fill Him up. He lived out of fullness, and you and I can too. The Scriptures say that we “have been given fullness in Christ.” Do you know who you are? Do you know your identity as a follower of Jesus Christ who has put your trust in Him for your salvation? The Scriptures says that you are “redeemed.” That means that you were bought back to Him so that legally God owns you. You belong to Him. You don't belong to Him only as a slave, only as a possession, because the Scriptures say that God actually cares about the relationship you have with Him. The Bible calls that reconciliation-that God made peace with you-even though He didn't do anything wrong; we did. He took the initiative to reconcile that relationship and make it okay again. If that weren't enough, He then adopted us as His very own sons and daughters in Christ. Jesus is the true Son; we're not. We're the prodigals. He took us and said, “No, I consider you just like My son, just like My daughter. You are Mine completely.” Therefore we belong, we are accepted, and we are loved because of the cross of Christ, because of Jesus. That's our past, but our present is the same thing. Did anybody get short with your children this morning on the way to church because they weren't brushing their teeth fast enough and getting their clothes on [quickly enough]? I don't know if that happens to the rest of you, but that's Sunday morning for the Christensen family. Sometimes it's me not getting ready on time, but this happens. God looks at us with our impatience, our ugliness, and our self-focused nature, and what does He think of you? Oh, yeah, we know we're saved, forgiven, and going to Heaven, but “what does God really think of me? I know God loves me because He loved me on the cross, but does He like me?” Do you know what the Bible says? He adores you. He is head over heels delighted in you, and it's not because you are delightful-and I'm not either-but it's because we have glued ourselves by faith to Jesus, the delightful One, the acceptable One. Therefore, we are accepted because of Christ. That's living in fullness. That's exactly what Paul is talking about when he said, “You have been given fullness in Christ. You are so loved, so delighted in. God enjoys you, takes pleasure in you.” In fact, Zephaniah 3-and this blows my brain every time I think about it-says that God dances over us with delight. Now if I didn't know better, I would say He would have some kind of psychological problem; but in Christ, I can see Him dancing with delight over Jesus. Because we're glued to Jesus, we're in. We get the same benefit. Our destiny-Jesus' destiny that He was returning to the Father, that's it. That's our glorious destiny as well and then we will receive the commendation, the judgment, the opinion that matters because it's of the One. It's God Himself who will give His assessment. We live for His praise; we live for His commendation-not other people's. You see, insecurity destroys your relationships because everything you do, you are doing to try to get something. You're trying to get love, trying to get acceptance, trying to get praise and affirmation. How many people have quit ministries that they were in because they didn't feel appreciated? If you lived out of the fullness of God's love, it wouldn't matter; and it didn't matter for Jesus-not because people didn't matter, but because He was so full of God's love that He could just overflow God's love. How many people have left their spouses because that spouse just wasn't fulfilling them? Gosh, get your fulfillment from God, and you will persevere in your vows. You are unstoppable and unconquerable when your life is consumed with the love of God that He has for you in Christ. May we by God's grace live a life of loving acts of humble service in everyday life because we can. Jesus says we should, but He also shows us that we can. It is through the glory of the Gospel in our lives that we are loved by Him-our past, present, and future consumed with the love of God. Thank you and God bless. [Pastor Jeff:] That was good, wasn't it? I was on the interstate and on I90, they have some construction going on, and it divides up. You have to pick which side you're going to go on-left of right. There are barrels there that are dividing the two, so once you make your decision, you can't cross back to the other side. There was an annoying driver next to me trying to pass me. He was tailgating everybody-cars, trucks-and I'd been watching this guy now for miles. I was irritated by him. He was riding my bumper and wanted to get around me. Around me was simply two semi trucks, and there was no place for him to go once he got around me anyway. I was like, “Go ahead.” I got out of his way and let him go ahead. He was moving back and forth between the trucks trying to get around them. Finally we got to that crossroad where you could go to the right where it said, “Slower traffic keep right.” I was thinking, “That's me. I like to go really slow around these big barrels. The lane is getting narrow. I want to take my time,” so I was going slow. Of course, he wanted to be in the fast lane, so he took to the left and took off. This went on for miles with these barrels. I finally met up with him because very few people took the slow road. Life in the fast lane, “I want to get there quick.” Everybody went over to the left to the point where that became a traffic jam, and I had open road [on my side of the barrels] (congregation laughing). It was like maybe three miles down the road [in front of me that] there was a truck, but I could go as fast or slow as I wanted. It was like I drove by the guy and wanted to go “Bye!!!!” He was stuck, and I was free. There is a freedom when we do things God's way. When we pursue what the world says, and the world says, “Put yourself first. Pride, life in the fast lane. Go get it! It belongs to you!” That's self-centered. we take that lowly way; we take the slow way. We have to humble ourselves a little bit, do things God's way. There is an incredible freedom that comes in that. I thought Sean did an excellent job bringing that Truth home to us this morning. I get to hear it one more time. I'm almost to the point now where I could preach it-almost.
