What Property Owners Should Know About Electrical Systems

Michael McDonnell is an Electrical Contractor at Light It Up Electric. Originally from Aspen, Colorado, he moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma, during the COVID-19 pandemic.  In this episode… As a landlord, understanding and upgrading your home's electrical system is imperative. Many older properties contain aluminum or copper wiring, which can cause safety hazards if outlets and circuits are overburdened. So what should you know about your property's electricity, and how can you maintain it appropriately? As a skilled electrical contractor, Michael McDonnell has witnessed his fair share of blown circuits and frayed wiring. He notes that a single circuit in an old home cannot withstand the influx of new appliances in various outlets, leading to frequently tripped breakers and expensive damage like burned panels. Replacing outdated panels ensures safety and mitigates unnecessary maintenance. Although licensed, electricians often lack adequate knowledge of electrical systems and perform surface-level repairs. Electrical contractors can rewire a house with updated wiring to comply with state codes and educate homeowners about the appropriate outlets to plug in their appliances, ultimately reducing costs.  Mat Zalk sits down with Michael McDonnell, Electrical Contractor at Light It Up Electric, in this episode of The Same Day Podcast to talk about the characteristics of electrical systems. Michael explains why property owners should upgrade their electrical panels, the ideal location for a GFCI receptacle, and when to transition from overhead to underground power.

Michael McDonnel knew he was different than the average person. But it was in learning how to navigate his own life around his cystic fibrosis treatment and cystic fibrosis-related diabetes that give him the upper hand in organizing and prioritizing healthy habits.  Listeners will find inspiration for a healthier life from this podcast, learning How the pressures Michael grew up with shaped him into achieving more physical capability and fitness than the average person, What made him realize being a personal trainer with only a few hours a week with someone wasn't enough, and How he is now able to guide clients toward prioritizing lifestyle strategies that ensure healthy habits when they aren't in the gym. Michael McDonnell is a speaker, author, and entrepreneur. He was born with cystic fibrosis and eventually developed a diabetes similar to type 2 from the mucus that cystic fibrosis causes acting like fat. His physical struggles, however, pushed him to work harder and longer than his peers at sports and fitness goals. He explains that he needed to think differently than other people to find his place in the world, both physically and in terms of work. Eventually, he used his expertise on developing physical fitness to become a personal trainer. But he had a realization: You can help people get healthy and fit by telling them to eat and exercise better, but the rest of their week is out of the gym. Maybe there a daily factors working against these goals. This realization along with his own hard-won lifestyle choices and skills sent him towards a lifestyle design profession. He studied and researched stress relief and organizational skills to help clients create time all week to be healthy. He now helps his clients put lifestyle design first so that health and fitness develops as a result. You can tell someone to eat better, he says, but their lifestyle needs to enable that. Therefore, he expanded his work into the self-improvement and self-development route, utilizing skills in prioritizing health and organizing one's day around fitness goals that he had been developing his whole life. He shares some great examples with listeners about ways he's helped others to reshape their daily life towards these goals. Available on Apple Podcasts: apple.co/2Os0myK

#228 Michael McDonnell – Confidence

The Next 100 Days Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 19, 2020 52:45

Confidence with Michael McDonnell Today we're hearing from a young man who has overcome a great deal of adversity, to now be an expert in his field - confidence. It's a great story. Michael's journey to confidence For Michael, it started from 2 months old. Michael was born with Cystic Fibrosis, which meant his body overproduced (and overproduces) mucus. This causes complications for his lungs and digestive system (in the main). At the time, there wasn't a lot of information on Cystic Fibrosis. And yet, Michael's parents had to become experts in the field. This lead to their being controlling (although for the right reasons) in regard to where Michael could go, who he could see, etc. However, that obviously puts a lot of pressure on someone when you're restricted greatly. Especially with confidence. Throughout Michael's teenage years, he had cycles of feeling fine and so deciding he wouldn't take his medication (being rebellious if you will), and returning to medication when his condition was bad. The realisation he came to is this: it's not about the doing but the outcome if you stopped doing something. Also, understanding his condition for himself was a major player in gaining confidence with his condition and taking the medication. http://thenext100days.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/Feeling-normal.mp4 Confidence issues Naturally, being 'the odd one out' at school has huge implications for your confidence and wellbeing. This was exactly the case for Michael. When we talk about overcoming our insecurities, there's talk about the stories we tell ourselves that aren't actually true. However, a lot of the stories were true for Michael. He couldn't do certain things because of the conditions and that was a tangible and dangerous reality for him; the conditions weren't necessarily going to get better. Therefore, Michael had to navigate a lot of these situations on his own, He had to figure out what conditions were okay, what weren't and how to overcome them in each scenario. http://thenext100days.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/Lockdown-isolation-parallels.mp4 Funnily enough (and I can relate to this), Michael has realised through lockdown that he is not as introverted as he thought he was. Lockdown has had a huge personal benefit as it has allowed the time for self inspection and understanding. What do you do now? One of the things Michael spends the majority of the time dealing with is helping business owners. Especially if they're online business owners, they can often hide because they're not needed to be seen. They can take a handful of photos and that's it! However, what people can often do is stay in their own heads with thoughts of being invisible. There's so much demand online that there are so many competitors. But, what needs to be done is to put yourself out within your niche and to make yourself desirable. You can't be desirable if you're invisible. Michael's ability to be confident on camera and to be available and present online comes from his personal growth. At first, he was a robot on camera. He had scripts, he dresses up, his eyes would wander and his attention was all over the place. In essence, Michael wasn't any good at doing the things he can do brilliantly now - videos, podcasts, public speaking. What is it about confidence that most of us don't know? There's a bit of a misconception around it because most people who you think are confident are just being themselves. However, that's a half-solution because it implies that you can only be confident - or have the permission be - if you're made a certain way. http://thenext100days.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/Whos-from-the-North.mp4 Confidence can be seen as a black and white concept but the truth is, a lot of us can be confident but still like our time away from the world. We can be quietly confident or be extroverted and bubbly-confident. It's a spectrum and it's a combination depending on your personality and ...

How can I describe Michael McDonnell? He is transparent, technical, and full of energy. Not bad for a 25 year old running his own recruitment company. His job is to reach out and find what food companies are looking for and I have some good news for those of you listening, these people are looking for experts. I grill Michael on all sorts of crazy questions that I felt like when I looked for a job and Michael answered these like, really well. And I ask questions such as how companies look for rockstars, the benefits of using a recruiter, what an ATS system is and why does everyone use it, and my personal question: how long should someone be in their job? Michael answers all of these with short and direct honesty and I just learned so much from this interview. So sit back and relax as we look into how recruiting works and how that will benefit you. We want to exceed those expectations How do you find clients in the food and beverage industry and how do you communicate with them?: It starts with being on the phone. It requires a lot of cold calling. Maybe 100 phone calls to connect with another company. Who do you contact when you cold call?: Our best way is to connect with the Hiring Manager so we can find the right service to find the right people Does everyone want a Rockstar or do they not want a rock star?: Depends. Sales people want a Rockstar. For QA or data based, you might not want someone super extraverted. Job search tips Usually, people want the best of the best. Job boards might actually show the best of the worst “It’s better to be employed than not employed” most people think this but sometimes good people get in unfortunate circumstances A recruiter has a genuine conversation with a hiring manager and really focuses on getting the best fit and exploring options ATS system- automatic tracking system which is a vetting system that looks for 5 key words. Food Trends and Technology: Adaptable Experts and not so much specialized experts Biggest Problem in the Food Industry: Lots of “foo-foo” going on un terms of claims. Consumer needs to educate themselves. There’s a lot of documents that involve claims What is one thing in the food industry you’d like to know more about?: I’d ask a question: where is the largest need? I’d ask this to 100 people and gather the responses. Favorite Quote: Help enough people to get what they want and the world will give you what they want There are no problems we can solve together and very few problems we can solve ourselves I listen to hour motivationial quotes on youtube Favorite kitchen item: knife. You can change things around and it’s dangerous Favorite book: The Maxwell Daily Reader Do you have any advice for anyone who wants to go into the food industry?: Ask questions. You can open so many doors by asking questions to people. Ask people why do they eat what they eat. What do you eat?: I eat it all. I research a lot on diets but then I eat a lot sometimes. I eat a lot of protein.  What are the common myths about job searching you’d like to dispel?: “There’s no jobs”. After seven, long years of occupation, Americans found New York City in shambles after the British evacuation on November 25, 1783. Ten to twenty-five percent of the city had burned in 1776. The British used just about every building that remained to billet officers, soldiers, refugees, and their horses. Plus more refugees and animals crammed into vacant lots, streets, and alleyways. New York City stood in need of a lot of repair. Which raises the question: How did New Yorkers rebuild New York City? Where did they get the money to rebuild, improve, and encourage the economic development that would transform the city into the thriving metropolis and economic hub that it would be come? Brian Murphy, an Associate Professor of History at Rutgers University-Newark, takes us through part of this amazing story with details from his book Building the Empire State: Political Economy in the Early Republic.
