It's a pattern, it's widespread and it's continuing today," SNAP leader Nicky Davis said. Many survivors had spoken and given evidence to police and the abuse royal commission but were mostly ignored. The group urged the federal government to launch an investigation into the elite p*dophile network.CONNECT WITH THE IMAGINATION:EMAIL: imagineabetterworld2020@gmail.comMy Substack: https://emmakatherine.substack.com/BUY ME A COFFEE: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/theimaginationAll links: https://direct.me/theimaginationpodcastRIFE TECHNOLOGIES:https://realrifetechnology.com/15% Code: 420CZTL METHELENE BLUE:https://cztl.bz?ref=2BzG1Free Shipping Code: IMAGINATIONSupport the show

Margaret Mary O'Connor has made it her mission to reveal the truth of Your Catholic Church. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University At Buffalo (NY), and a Master of Arts in Pastoral Ministry from Christ the King Seminary in East Aurora, NY. She is a former Chaplain and is currently a Eucharistic Minister at Our Lady of Charity Parish where, ironically, the Church windows depict the Vatican II Council. One window represents the “Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World,” which includes an article that speaks directly to ending sexual discrimination of all kinds in our Church. In this time of Church upheaval, O'Connor, as author of Scandal in the Shadows, has uncovered secrets which were conveniently buried away in hopes they would never see the light of day. Enter Margaret Mary O'Connor. O'Connor literally “walks the walk” on picket lines to help keep this issue of Women's Ordination in the forefront of Catholics' minds. She also pickets for Church accountability on the priest sexual-abuse issue. As a fellow member of the Laity, herself, she believes any Catholic, deserves at minimal at least the truth from Rome, as opposed to the continual outright deception they are receiving. She also is a member of Call to Action, Future Church, Roman Catholic Women Priests, the Women's Ordination Conference, the Survivors Network of Those Abused by Priests (SNAP), Preservation Buffalo Niagara and Western New York Land Conservancy and Buffalo Central Terminal. Margaret truly encountered a life-altering experience she will never forget. Living twenty years with an undiagnosed autoimmune disease, her life was literally hell. Beyond the daily physical symptoms to deal with, were the emotional ones as well. She was told by two doctors that basically her physical symptoms of vomiting, great loss of weight, anemia, and diarrhea (to name a few) were all in her head. The doctor she really needed to see, they told her, was a Psychiatrist. It's truly a miracle she is alive today, thanks to finally finding a doctor who actually ordered tests to find the reason for her illness – which turned out to be celiac disease. She will never forget when her doctor told her she would have been “six feet under” within six months. Her twin-sister Pat, had brain cancer, and never got to have that second chance at life. But Margaret feels incredibly fortunate to have her life back again. It's like she is seeing life from a new and different perspective, and every moment has become wonderfully precious. Today she lives life to the fullest and her latest adventure is writing, something she had never done before. She knows from experience that having her own story ignored is the reason she brings a visceral passion to her writing. If one side of a story is ignored, you will miss its reality and truth. In moments of crisis, human rights violations are more likely to occur and the COVID-19 pandemic is no different.  Globally, the pandemic has wreaked havoc on families and communities, interrupted jobs and livelihoods, and increased economic hardship, among other adverse effects. Across Africa, the pandemic has exposed the fragile political freedoms and socio-economic rights for people living on the continent and resulted in increased rates of violence by state and non-state actors, with a disproportionate impact on girls and women. Our jaws were on the floor as we heard Ashley Easter tell her story of growing up in a fundamentalist Baptist family and homeschooled under the Christian Patriarchy, Quiverfull and Stay At Home Daughter movements. Guided by her strength and intuition, she was able to survive and escape the cults she had been indoctrinated in, and is now an empowerment coach and trained abuse victim advocate, and founder of The Courage Conference, an internationally attended abuse survivor conference. She is also the Vice President of "Survivors Network of Those Abused by Priests," the largest and oldest clergy sexual abuse victim advocacy organization. Ashley's story of surviving a religious fundamentalist cult hit us both so deeply as we recognized cult-like behavior in so many non-religious organizations – corporations, social groups, families, and particularly the spiritual community, where many teachers are treated as untouchable and unquestionable gurus that can do no wrong. And Ashley is passionate about teaching others how to identify, connect with, and listen to their intuition so that they can develop greater discernment when it comes to the choices that they make in their lives from business to personal relationships. "In 1965, when I was 8, a newly ordained priest, Father Reinecke, joined our parish," she says. Father Reinecke used this trust and love to sexually abuse me. I think this is one of the aspects of being abused that hurts the most. He was my friend, my own personal representative of God and he betrayed me. "Father Reinecke abused me in my own basement and in the vestry of the church. I never told anyone as a child. His sexual abuse made me feel dirty and at fault. It was implied that if I told anyone God would be mad at me and I would go to hell." She got help instead. "I was in a very dark place. Another victim of my perpetrator suggested I contact SNAP (Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests). I called SNAP and that phone call changed my life. I began to go to their support groups and by listening to others stories I began to heal. I was in therapy for 8 years and my therapist gave me many tools to help me help myself." Becky goes on, "As I got stronger, I began to volunteer with SNAP. I have answered the helpline, helped organized our national conference, trained other leaders and have been a board member for the past 5 years." Becky's message is clear, "My support to those just starting their journey is that there is hope. Your journey is yours alone and everybody's path to healing is unique. I am here to support you. You are not alone. It wasn't your fault and I believe you."

In this episode Jonathan Rosenfeld chats with Martin D. Gould an Attorney at Romanucci & Blandin, LLC. Here, they discuss: Church Sexual Abuse Lawsuits: What is Sexual Abuse?   Read the Transcript Download the PDF Jonathan Rosenfeld: Hello, everybody. Welcome back to the Personal Injury Podcast. Today. I am joined by Marty Gould, a good friend and colleague, and we are here today to talk about sexual abuse lawsuits in the church and, what is sexual abuse? Marty, first off, thank you for joining me today. I appreciate it. Marty Gould: Happy to be on. Jonathan Rosenfeld: Marty, for those of us who don't really have a full understanding of the breadth of this issue, can you give us some background and give us a short explanation about what sexual abuse is at least in the eyes of the law? Marty Gould: Oftentimes when people talk about sexual abuse in a lawsuit context, it often refers to childhood sexual abuse. It includes many different types of abuse. It could be fondling, oral sex, penetration of any kind, but it can also be showing somebody pornography. John, you and I have a case out in California where a teacher was sending explicit text messages and photographs to a student. That is considered sexual abuse under the law, and it's a basis for a lawsuit. It can also include emotional abuse, so it includes the grooming aspect that happens before the actual physical contact. In lawsuits, it's a broad definition. Anything that can be considered sexual, or that happens to a child under the age of 18 years old. Jonathan Rosenfeld: Now, one of the emerging issues in the area of sexual abuse litigation is really cases involving the church. Can we talk a little bit about the cases that are involved, the church and sexual abuse involving clergy and the priest, what those cases typically involve? Marty Gould: Most of those lawsuits involve institutional negligence claims against the church. In every lawsuit, you can sue the perpetrator. But in a civil case, all you can get is financial compensation. So a large part of the case is against the institution for covering up abuse, for protecting pedophiles or suspected pedophiles, for failing to investigate allegations of abuse. The claims are often brought in terms of negligent hiring, for not doing a proper investigation to a potential priest who's moving to your parish. So many times, a lot of these priests may have allegations against them in a different diocese or even in a different state. Marty Gould: Like in many of our cases, they came from California or Pennsylvania. Usually, they're being shipped out of there for a reason. The new diocese that's taking him in has an obligation to call the former employer and say, "Hey, why is this guy leaving? What happened? Then if they know of any allegations of abuse, they have an obligation to investigate and to warn the public if there's credible allegations. That's unfortunately, something that didn't happen for many, many decades. Priests were moved from one parish to another without warning the parishioners about this person's history, and they continued to abuse children time and time again. Jonathan Rosenfeld: Now, do church officials have an obligation to report episodes of abuse if they're a witness to something in their organization, in their church, in their school? Do they have some type of legal obligation to report the abuse to authorities? Marty Gould: In many states, they do. The laws have progressed over time, and every state's law can be a little bit different, but for the most part, clergy are now considered mandatory reporters. So whether they hear about abuse in a confessional, or whether a reported abuse from the survivor themselves, or from a parent, they have an obligation to report it. Typically, the law would require them to report it to the Department of Children and Family Services within that state, or even law enforcement. If the Department of Children and Family Services becomes aware of it, they do their own investigation. It's a separate investigation that's typically, also done by law enforcement. If the allegations are proven to be true, criminal charges are brought and ideally, there's criminal consequences. Jonathan Rosenfeld: Now, in the issue of a clergy sexual abuse lawsuit, we're generally talking about monetary damages. When we're talking about monetary damages, we're trying to put a value on the restitution to the individual and the harm to the individual. Can you talk a little bit about what the damages are in these cases, and how the church in general, in the past has valued these types of cases? Marty Gould: Childhood sexual abuse is probably the most heinous crime that can be committed. We're talking about children that are uniquely vulnerable. When it's a religious leader, like a priest, the child is taught to respect and to listen to that authority. That breach of that trust, coupled with physical and emotional abuse, can cause devastating consequences. Legally, you're allowed to recover for emotional distress, psychological trauma, and physical pain and suffering, or emotional pain and suffering. We articulate those injuries, the other side through the testimony of our clients, but also through counselors. Many times, a lot of survivors end up using drugs to cope with what happened. We get those records and explain to the church, because of what happened, they went down a certain path. They became addicted to certain drugs to cope with what happened, and that's all part of the damages aspect that we seek compensation from the church. Jonathan Rosenfeld: The church in the past, can you give us an idea as to the payments that the church has made on some of these cases? Not necessarily on an individual basis, but in general. This has been a pretty substantial problem for the church. We're focusing right now on the Catholic Church, but the truth is, is that, this can be any religious institution. But the amount of payments that have gone on over the past several decades have been substantial. Do you have any idea about these payments and about the type of damages we're talking about here? Marty Gould: Legally, when somebody commits a harm against you, whether it's caused by the negligence of the religious institution, whether it's a Catholic church, a synagogue, a temple, or whomever, you can recover, what's called economic, non-economic damages. So we can get compensation for the psychological trauma and harm, the lost earning capacity, lost income that that person might have had had they finished school or done things in a different way when they weren't dealing with that abuse. Marty Gould: Recoveries have been significant, hundreds of millions of dollars have been paid in these cases across the country. That's why it's important to go find a lawyer who can assess your case, work up your case, and articulate to the other side how this has dramatically impacted your life. If you haven't done counseling yet, many people, because they don't come forward earlier because they're afraid they may not be believed, or it's a repressed memory and they haven't done counseling yet, that doesn't mean you didn't have an injury. And that doesn't mean that we can't articulate to the church, or whomever, how it's impacted you. Jonathan Rosenfeld: Now, one of the things that victims frequently come forward and ask is, "What type of help is out there for me to help me recover from this episode?" It's easy for us to sit here and say, "Hey, you know what? Do some treatment and move on." But the truth is, is that, these people really have lifelong issues. Can you just give out a few resources available for someone who's a victim of abuse? Marty Gould: There's many great networks out there in survivor groups that can help victims and survivors. One of the ones that I've worked with in the past, and I've had many clients be a part of, is called the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, also known as SNAP. It's a support group of survivors of clergy sexual abuse and their supporters throughout the country. If you reach out, you can engage in support groups. You can also try and find counseling through them. There's also an organization called Bishop Accountability, which documents a lot of allegations of abuse. Marty Gould: It's a good resource in terms of finding out more information about what went on in your specific parish or diocese, religious order. There's an organization called Drug Rehab, another one called the Addiction Center, Road to Recovery, Campus Safety, all great organizations that help people deal with some of the traumas, and deal with addictions that are often associated with traumas. Then of course, counseling with an attorney who can help direct you to possible counseling through the institution. We can sometimes get the institution to pay for your counseling if you don't have health insurance. So there's many different great networks out there and resources where you can get support to help move path this. Jonathan Rosenfeld: Well, certainly, there seems to be some light at the end of the tunnel for some of these people. Marty, I really appreciate you sharing with us today your insight on this important topic. I want to thank you for your time. Marty Gould: Happy to be on. Thanks for having me, John.

So, when an invitation to party with slightly older and more popular students comes up, for most, it would be a no-brainer. This was certainly the case of two girls back in 2012, who were looking forward to cutting loose with some boys they knew from school. There was absolutely no way they could have foreseen the abuse they would be subjected to that night, and for years to come. Trigger warning, we will be discussing rape, sexual assault and self-harm today as I and Mark from the Survivors Network uncover Daisy Coleman's story.Check out the Survivor Network on GetVokl - https://getvokl.com/channel/colcrimeYou can follow the Survivor Netwrk on Twitter at @survivornetCheck out Cubs & Co on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/cubsandco_prints/ & you can check out their website here - https://www.cubsandcoprints.com/ (NOT SPONSORED, NOT AN AFF LINK)Start your own podcast with Buzzsprout todayhttps://www.buzzsprout.com/?referrer_id=670031(affiliate link)Twitter - @Uncover_podInstagram - uncovertruecrimepodJoin Facebook group - https://www.facebook.com/groups/uncovertruecrimediscussionCase Suggestion Form - https://forms.gle/mUDbNYeoTZ5kGfaq7Music - Dark Rage,The Rake by CO-AG & Where'd You Go by Fort MinorAll sources and pictures can be found at www.uncovertruecrimepodcast.co.uk

In the third installment of Trauma Survivors Network Series of UNC Trauma Talks we spoke with Tracy Stickland, mother of Amanda Stickland, and both a TSN volunteer and UNC Health employee. Tracy became an employee at UNC Health after Amanda's car accident, which kept her in the hospital for over five weeks. Amanda was "distracted driving', which many may not realize includes eating while driving. Amanda survived after a hard fight in the hospital but suffered facial injuries and a severe brain injury, which has resulted in short-term memory loss and prevents her from living independently. Tracy provides really important tips and resources on distracted driving that she would like others to know, and provided the online resources that are linked below. Finally, Tracy wants to emphasize that families in similar positions should be sure to put a legal plan in place for the caregivers' end of life. Tracy shared that Amanda will long outlive her and her other current caregivers. Making sure that Amanda will be taken care once that occurs has been a priority for her family. https://www.bianc.net/ https://www.nhtsa.gov/risky-driving/distracted-driving

Tonight's special guest is Tim Lennon from Tucson, Arizona, the President of the Board Of Directors at SNAP (Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests). Tim shares, "I was one of twelve children who grew up in an Irish Catholic neighborhood and went to Catholic school for twelve years. The priest who raped me was an occasional visitor to my home. He was also a teacher at my elementary school and track team coach." The rape happened at home and was violent and life threatening. Tim shares, “I am lucky to be here. At the time I don’t think the rapist cared whether I lived or died. The sexual abuse ended only because the predator was caught by a parent and sent to another parish.” Later, Tim contacted the leader of a SNAP support group in East Bay, saying “Terrie Light was a life safer–I will never forget her support.” When Tim had twin daughters, he dropped out of the SNAP support group. However, when his daughters were 12 years old, it evoked memories of the violent rape when he was the same age. Tim was devastated, as all the memories of the rape emerged and hit him hard, as Tim shares, “I suffered months of all the symptoms of PTSD, depression, anxiety, nightmares, and months of crying. I immediately got re-engaged with SNAP and co-led a support group in San Francisco.” Tim later retired and volunteered with SNAP, as a victim support person for those contacting the website SNAPnetwork.org. Tim states, “When I was sexually abused when I was twelve, I froze. Now, I can fight back. What happened to me should not happen to another child.”

The US Conference of Catholic Bishops is meeting in Baltimore this week. One of the big topics is how to handle sexual abuse allegations. Last month the Pope said all accusations should be reported and dealt with through the church. The group, SNAP (Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests) says it should go directly to the police. I talked with founding member Peter Isley who has given up on the church to do “the right thing” and even said the recent story in the Washington Post about the Bishop in West Virginia is evidence of a cover-up. It gets real at the end of the interview….

When they meet in Baltimore next week, America’s Catholic bishops will make another run at establishing how bishops should be held accountable in the clerical sex-abuse crisis. Baltimore’s archdiocese has set up a system where complaints of wrong-doing go to a third party for review. David Lorenz of the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests says the church cannot be trusted to investigate itself. Archbishop William Lori tells us allegations of criminal misconduct are reported to police, and then the church investigates.

About last night: the results of Tuesday's primaries are being called a groundbreaking night for women and diversity, but will they result in substantive policy output? Christine Hallquist became the first transgender woman to win the gubernatorial race in Vermont; in Minnesota, Ilhan Omaris is poised to be one of the first Muslim women elected to Congress; Jahana Hayes won the Democratic primary for Connecticut's Fifth Congressional District. Will the "Blue Wave" make some headway, or will the tides turn? The TeleSur English Facebook page was republished on the social media website this morning after it was taken down Monday evening without any substantive explanation. Supporters and media outlets such as Sputnik News and this program specifically expressed solidarity with TeleSur after the unexplained and brief removal. How does Facebook choose whom they censor, and is there a lack of transparency?A new grand jury report provides disturbing details of sexual abuse by Pennsylvania Catholic priests of over 1,000 children. The claims date back to 1947 and involve over 300 priests and six dioceses. Many of the priests still serve in churches. The real number of victims could be higher in the thousands. The deeper we dig, the worse things become, and this is why the investigation should have never been left up to the Church to manage in the first place. We'll talk to a survivor about solutions.A GoFundMe page for fired FBI agent Peter Strzok raises $325,000 in one day. How is it that an agency that worked to undermine democracy in America with its COINTELPRO program has now become so beloved by the left? The rise of Donald Trump should be no surprise to anyone watching history. We'll also analyze the parallels between the rise of the ultra-right in the 1930s and today. The first factor: major economic depression and social dislocation undermined people's confidence in democracy and led them to look for alternatives. Today, the overall US economy has been performing well, but levels of inequality continue to rise. The second factor was fear of communism, which led many leading intellectuals to embrace fascism as a bulwark against Bolshevism and as the lesser of two evils. Few people worry about the communist threat today, yet fear of communism has been replaced by fear of globalists and elite technocrats who supposedly seek to undermine and control the lives of ordinary Americans. The third factor was the rise of Nazi Germany as an economic and military powerhouse, today reflected most clearly in fears over the rise of China. Tonight's special guest is César M, a 41 year-old survivor of sexual abuse originally from Central America who's now living in California. César was sexually abused as a child by a family member, and then in his teenage years by Catholic priests. His abuse lasted from his early childhood until his late teens, and once the years of assault were over he succumbed to alcohol addiction as a way to dealing with the repercussions. In his mid thirties he decided to seek help, and started a long journey of psychotherapy and self help, networking with other survivors, etc. Male Survivor is among the important groups with which he's affiliated. SNAP, The Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, was another. César writes, "Now as a survivor I want to start living a meaningful, purposeful life. Thus I've decided to start working on fulfilling a life-long dream of becoming a photographer. This new journey is about to take place come the New Year with the help of my friend Mark Riser (also a NAASCA famuily member)." Mark and César met a few years ago at a retreat for male survivors of sexual abuse and have kept in touch ever since as a form of having a support network. Their bond as survivors has become very strong. Now César will be along to record Mark's "Made to Soar" road trip, a cross-country motorcycle tour to meet other childhood sexual abuse survivors. César says, "This will be a new chapter in my life as I thrive to transition from victim hood to survivor ship. I want to be someone that tells the world that sexual abuse is not a myth, but a reality and that silence can kill."

Sexual Abuse Awareness Week- "Child Sexual Abuse is nothing new. It remains horrifically part of our "enlightened society."  Whenever children innocently and vunlerably need adult attention, opportunistic adults may "groom" children in their care to become unwilling, manipulated sexual partners.  Parents, remain alert especially when childcare or extra-curricular activities afford adult sexual predators access to lure clueless, trusting children into private locations," explains Dr. Carol Francis. James R Dunlap, author of Millstone, a thrilling, fast paced, important novel about child sexual abuse, is a parent himself riveted with the damage his son suffered at the hands of a Catholic priest.   During Sexual Abuse Awareness Week, November 26, 2012, James Dunlap and dedicated supporters release Millstone (The Novel) to reveal these sexual predators and to save children from becoming their next victims.   Joelle Casteix joins the program today also as the  leading national spokesperson, writer, and advocate for victims of child sexual abuse.  She is also the Western Regional Director for SNAP, Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests. Former police officer Tom Townsend joins the show as well.  Having investigated several sexual abuse cases in his career and knowing the impact it has on children even as they grow into adults, Tom Townsend takes every opportunity he can to help prevent it and educate all children to speak out, reveal their abusers and seek help.

Tonight's special guest is Barbara Dorris, abuse survivor and Outreach Director for the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP). SNAP is the largest, oldest and most active support group for women and men wounded by religious authority figures (priests, ministers, bishops, deacons, nuns and others). An independent and confidential organization, SNAP has no connections with the church or church officials. SNAP was founded by Chicago's Barbara Blaine in 1988. Since then, SNAP has helped thousands of survivors, offering support in person, (via monthly self-help group meetings in chapters across the country), over the phone, online, and twice-a-year at national meetings. The Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests also provides a safe and productive outlet for the passion many survivors feel toward preventing future abuse. The SNAP web site exists to provide support and knowledge to all victims of clergy abuse, to help educate the public, and to help ensure that in future generations, children will be safe.

Who Stands to Gain? The Complex Web of Archdiocesan Bankruptcies and Sister Cathy's Unsolved Murder. After funneling an extensive amount of resources into fighting against survivors in Maryland to preserve the statute of limitations, the Archdiocese of Baltimore has now opened a new legal front—filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.Astoundingly, the archdiocese seems willing to spend millions more in legal and court fees to essentially carve out their own type of statute of limitations, a privilege that bankruptcy can afford them. This unsettling move is not unique to Baltimore; it's part of a wider pattern with 30 other archdioceses across the United States following suit.As this unfolds, Shane Waters and Gemma Hoskins reunite in Episode 87 of Foul Play: Crime Series to continue their dedicated investigation into who killed Sister Cathy. Kicking off Season 2 back in September 2018, we've now arrived at a critical juncture that compels us to ask: Who had the most to gain from Sister Cathy's tragic death? In this episode, listeners will be guided through the labyrinthine world of bankruptcy filings, legal strategies, and the disturbing lengths to which these religious institutions are willing to go to avoid accountability. The timing of these bankruptcy filings is not coincidental; it has the potential to thwart ongoing investigations and silence survivors indefinitely. Shane and Gemma dig deep into the financial intricacies and legal loopholes that these archdioceses are exploiting. Alongside this, they also scrutinize the possible connections between Sister Cathy's unsolved murder and the powerful entities now using bankruptcy as a shield. As financial power plays become a focal point, this episode doesn't just scratch the surface; it delves deep into the complex machinations that could be hiding the truth behind Sister Cathy's murder. Don't miss this compelling episode that seeks to unravel the complex tapestry of legal and moral questions surrounding one of the most puzzling cold cases in Maryland. Author and Eucharistic Minister at Our Lady of Charity Parish, Margaret Mary O'Connor, nods in agreement when podcast hosts ask her if she is the “modern day David ready to slay Goliath,” with her newly released book, Scandal in the Shadows, The Original Priest, Mother Mary Quiet and humble by nature, the author has made it her mission to reveal the truth of Your Catholic Church. After years of research, Ms. O'Connor has painstakingly chronicled the oppression of women priests, dating back centuries. “Do you consider yourself to be the modern day David?” asks hosts near and far. With no hesitation, in a tone that would be approved in any church setting, she smiles and says, “Absolutely!” Margaret Mary O'Connor holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University At Buffalo (NY), and a Master of Arts in Pastoral Ministry from Christ the King Seminary in East Aurora, NY.
