A new game show in the United States called Paid Off helps contestants settle their student loans. Developed and hosted by actor and writer Michael Torpey, the game show began airing last July. According to Torpey, experiencing the hardship brought about by student debt with his wife motivated him to create the game show. Paid Off aims not only to help its contestants pay their loans but also to highlight America's student debt crisis. The total amount of student debt in the country is estimated at $1.4 trillion. Each episode of the show involves three contestants who introduce themselves by stating their name, the school where they studied, and the amount of their student debt. In several rounds, the contestants compete by answering trivia-type questions. In each round, the worst-performing participant is eliminated until only one is left. The last contestant must answer eight questions within a minute during the final round. The number of correct answers will determine the amount to be earned by the final contestant. The game mechanics entitle all participants to earn money. Even contestants who did not reach the last round still get a chance to lessen their debt because they earn money for every correct answer. The show was developed with the input of the Student Debt Crisis (SDC), a nonprofit organization that advocates affordable higher education. Torpey consulted with the SDC so that Paid Off can be entertaining without making light of student loans. Last July, the organization published a message from Torpey, urging people to acknowledge that education is a right and to find ways to make college education within everyone's reach.

We have officially begun counting down till San Diego Comic-Con! So, of course, that means Aaron and Jack spend a good portion of the episode talking about the TV goodies (or lack there-of) happening next week. The Emmy nominations were also announced this week, so we not only try to figure out who will win in this insane race but dig through some of the snubs (ie: No Twin Peaks or Last Man on Earth!) For shame! NEWS HIGHLIGHTS THIS WEEK: Game of Thrones Peter Dinklage scored his seventh Emmy nomination for supporting actor in a drama series. Dinklage is now the most nominated person ever in the category. Sandra Oh becomes first Asian woman to score lead actress Emmy nom for Killing Eve. FX has renewed Pose for a second season Three new Archie comics series are in the works. The first of which is an updated animated incarnation of Archie and his friends. There have been numerous Archie cartoons in the past, but this one will reportedly lean more towards comedy than the current comic book series or even Riverdale. The second show is also an animated series, with Josie from Josie and the Pussycats in the lead. That series is described as a "horror-tinged" story. The third is a live-action adaptation of Sam Hill, a private detective character whose adventures have only been sporadically published within the last few decades. Sam Hill is far from an obvious choice for an adaptation, but it could be a sign that the company is attempting to expand its reach. The accompanying report states the three shows are being pitched to streaming services and broadcast networks. Season 22 of South Park will premiere on September 26. FX's Y: The Last Man series has been cast. Barry Keoghan has been signed to portray Yorick Brown, an amateur escape artist and the only human male who survived a catastrophic plague that nearly wiped out his gender. Yorick and his Capuchin monkey, Ampersand, may be the only two male mammals left alive. Imogen Poots will play Hero Brown, Yorick’s sister and an EMT who has her own burdens to bear in the new world. Diane Lane will co-star as Senator Jennifer Brown, Yorick and Hero’s mother. Captain Marvel co-star Lashana Lynch has nabbed the fan favorite role of Agent 355, a Secret Service operative who becomes Yorick’s protector and one of the most memorable characters in the comic. Juliana Canfield will portray Yorick’s girlfriend, Beth, while Marin Ireland will play Nora, “the president’s senior assistant and right hand.” AARON'S LOSER: Bill Maher Live from Oklahoma and SuccessionJACK'S LOSERS: The Outpost and Very CavallariAARON'S FENCERS: Preacher and Mr. MercedesJACK'S FENCERS: Cooking on High, Paid Off with Michael Torpey, Bobcat Goldthwait's Misfits & Monsters, TKO: Total Knockout and The Unbreakable Kimmy SchmidtAARON'S WINNERS: Explained, Claws, Somebody Feed Phil, GLOW and Sharp ObjectsJACK'S WINNERS: Youtube Channels: Lindsay Ellis and Red Letter Media's Best of the Worst, Anne with an E and Somebody Feed Phil Be sure to subscribe on iTunes and comment! A game show made to wipe out student debt? That's right...coming to Tru TV is a new game show that's made specifically for that reason. If you're anything like millions of other people, you've probably had (or still have) the pleasure of dealing with student loans. Between ongoing bills and wallet stretching emergencies, it may seem like there's never enough money to go around. So what do you do? Coming to the basement to discuss the student loan epidemic, and to help YOU pay off some of your debt on his new show called Paid Off with Michael Torpey, we welcome....Michael Torpey. Also joining us is one of the people helping to lead the charge for student loan debt reform, the executive director of Student Debt Crisis, Natalia Abrams. In our headlines segment, how would you like to get thousands of dollars for painting your front door? Okay... while it's not THAT simple, the idea still stands. New statistics show that painting your front door is one of the most cost-effective methods of increasing your home's value. And in our second piece, one ATM had over $17,000 shredded...and you won't believe how it happened. And then, during the Haven Life Line, Kurt wants to know about jobs (other than a financial advisor of course) that deal with helping others financially. Of course, we'll still answer a letter, have time for Doug's trivia, and much more. Thanks to Slack for supporting Stacking Benjamins. Slack: Where work happens. Go to slack.com to learn more. The student loan picture in this country is not a pretty one. According to the Federal Reserve, over half of young adults who went to college took on some debt. It's so bad that outstanding student loans have topped $1.4 trillion! To address the problem, we’re going to have a bit of fun as we try and find some sorta way to ease the burden on those students. That’s why today we’re chatting with actor Michael Torpey, best known for his work on Orange is the New Black, Red Oaks and Sneaky Pete. The student loan crisis has become so massive, that Torpey is trying to solve it in a unique way – a comedy game show. Paid Off with Michael Torpey gives three lucky college grads – all saddled with student debt – the chance to test the depth of their degrees with fun, fast-paced trivia questions. In the end, one lucky winner wins the chance to have their student debt paid off. I love it! Such a brilliant way to help some lucky students start life in the real world without a several thousand dollar gorilla on their shoulders. And what was perhaps most interesting was to hear the backstory that led to Michael creating the show. And no, he didn’t have any student loans of his own... “Better Off” is sponsored by Betterment.
