This week on CounterSpin: Elite media can give the impression that problems wax and wane along with their attention to them. So it is with police brutality. The news media has moved on, yet 2023 saw killings by law enforcement up from the previous year, which was up from the year before that. More than 1,200 people were killed, roughly three people every day, including not just those shot dead but also those fatally shocked by a stun gun, beaten, or restrained to death. Thirty-six percent of those killed were fleeing, and they were disproportionately Black. Unheard in the news is the hard work of communities to reimagine public safety without punitive policing. We hear about it from Monifa Bandele from the Movement for Black Lives. Also on the show: Little research is more important or less acknowledged than Princeton's (now UCLA's) Martin Gilens and Northwestern's Benjamin Page 2014 work on the translation of public opinion into public policy. Looking at more than 1,700 policies over 20 years, they concluded that where economic elite views diverged from those of the public — as they would — the public had “zero estimated impact upon policy change, while economic elites are still estimated to have a very large, positive, independent impact.” Awareness of that fundamental disconnect is always relevant — but maybe especially when it comes to election season, where corporate coverage suggests we have an array of choices. How do we acknowledge flaws in the system while still encouraging people to participate and to fight the roadblocks to voting that we're seeing right now? We get at that with Svante Myrick, president of People For the American Way and former mayor of Ithaca, New York. The post Monifa Bandele on Reimagining Public Safety / Svante Myrick on Roadblocks to Voting appeared first on KPFA.

TRANSFABULOUS - Two trans men from Malaysia embarked on a courageous journey seeking freedom and refuge in Melbourne - Narrm, Australia. Identifying as trans masculine, Ethan and Tiff grew up in different cultural environments, with Tiff in a traditional Chinese household and Ethan in a Muslim household. In their homeland, they faced discrimination and marginalization due to their identity. However, upon their arrival in Melbourne - Narrm, they discovered a society that embraced and included them, providing solace and happiness. Finally, they could fully express their true selves and exercise their right to freedom of expression. Melbourne - Narrm became a haven where they could thrive without fear of judgment and freely explore their identities. The vibrant city brought them immense joy and a sense of belonging, enabling them to flourish within a diverse community that values and respects individuality. We are well aware of the dangers faced by transgender individuals in Malaysia. Conversion therapy is still practiced in the country, and trans individuals may be forcibly subjected to such harmful practices without their consent. In contrast, Australia provides a safer environment for Ethan & Tiff. The laws and societal attitudes in Australia are more inclusive and accepting, offering greater protection and support for transgender individuals. We believe that being in Australia offers Ethan & Tiff a significant improvement in terms of personal safety and well-being. This two part episode features a wonderful client, Monifa Robinson Groover, who not only has reached financial freedom, but has helped me as well. How often do we feel burned out at the end of the day? We are conditioned to go 100% all of the time in all facets of our lives. The results? We never feel like we can handle it all or that we have what it takes to take care of all of our needs and desires. We seem to feel like we can never catch up no matter what time management system we put in place. This is what a lot of ambitious women experience. In this episode Monifa tells us about her journey to financial freedom and shares how she is helping women find that balance that allows us to take care of all of the needs and desires we have on our plates. The way Monifa describes being financially free, is one that will move you. Now, it's always a wonderful feeling knowing you've helped yet another person in their journey reach their full potential. It's also a wonderful feeling when that same person you're helping ends up helping you. Yes, I helped Monifa with business and money and now she is helping me with her expertise through her coaching service Within Your Reach. Monifa's bright personality and wise words will inspire you. Will God answer your prayer if you don't end with, "In Jesus' name, Amen?" Learn what praying in the name of Jesus really means. I taught this week on the call of Abraham and the development of God's missionary call through the nation of Israel as they were responsible to communicate the truth of God to the cultures around them. They were given that great commission. The great commission didn't start in Matthew 28. It started with Abraham in Genesis 12 —the first three verses there —Abraham, chosen by God to raise up a nation who would then be God's priests to the world so that they would be a blessing to all of the nations. They had a unique role in the great monotheistic religion. The Jews were supposed to reflect morality to the world. Israel was to witness to the name of God. When they talked about the name of God and witnessing to God's name, that does not mean that they were to let everybody know what they called God, "Yahweh." Their goal wasn't to cover the countryside with evangelists who just let everybody know what the right word for God was. It meant something different. ☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆ https://linktr.ee/jacksonlibon --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- #face #instagram #amour #take #couple #garden #tiktok #psychology #beyou #near #love #foryou #money #ForYouPizza #fyp #irobot #theend #pups #TikToker #couplegoals #famille #relation #doudou #youtube #twitter #tiktokers #love #reeĺs #shorts #instagood #follow #like #ouy #oyu #babyshark #lilnasx #girl #happybirthday #movie #nbayoungboy #deviance #autotrader #trading #khan #academy #carter #carguru #ancestry #accords #abc #news #bts #cbs #huru #bluebook #socialmedia #whatsapp #music #google #photography #memes #marketing #india #followforfollowback #likeforlikes #a #insta #fashion #k #trending #digitalmarketing #covid #o #snapchat #socialmediamarketing
Welcome back to Crime-Day!

S/O to Monifa for being a guest on #YMHMS! This conversation was both refreshing & relatable in so many ways. Thank you for being so honest & real about your current mental space & the realizations you've had that have helped you grow. In this conversation, we dove into the importance of letting go & the need to be ruled by external opinion. We also discussed the different thoughts & experiences we've gone through when it comes to discerning the people and things that brings us real peace versus the things that are constantly negotiating against our happiness. It's important to make time to authentically assess the different moments in our live & identify the people, things & places that add value, happiness, & motivation to us while also being aware & accountable of the things that negatively become intertwined with our happiness and need to be released.

On today’s episode, Tim speaks with Monifa Bandele, Vice President and Chief Partnership & Equity Officer for Moms Rising: an organization committed to amplifying women's voices within the national public policy dialogue and media. Tim and Monifa discuss Mom’s Rising’s campaign to address the disturbing maternal health disparities between black and white women in America, including distressing rates of maternal mortality for African American women irrespective of socioeconomic status. Why are black women dying at much higher rates, and how does racism — implicit and institutional — contribute to the problem? How do stereotypes of black women, often held even by white physicians, endanger their lives? And what policy changes are needed to address the problem? They’ll also discuss last week’s removal of the statue of J. Marion Sims from Central Park in New York City. Sims, often called the “father of gynecology” (itself a rather absurd term given the long history of midwifery), developed many of his gynecological methods after submitting enslaved black women to torturous techniques, against their will, and without anesthesia. Why is the removal of the statue important, and not only at a symbolic level? Finally, this episode includes a commentary by Tim about the implicit white nationalism at the heart of a number of recent incidents, in which black bodies were presumed not to belong in certain spaces, including that Philadelphia Starbucks we’ve all heard about. While many think of white nationalism as something that comes with burning crosses and marching around with tiki torches (as in Charlottesville last August), the presumption that black folks (and other people of color) simply don’t belong “here” (meaning our neighborhood, our school, our businesses, etc) is all too common and ingrained in the fabric of America.
