Michael Bennett is a unicorn. The NFL defensive lineman for the Dallas Cowboys, is both a Super Bowl Champion and a self-described feminist. Pele Bennett is no slacker either: she's a food advocate and a skilled Polynesian dancer. Together, the Bennetts have taken on everything from racial justice work to authoring a children's book to parenting three daughters. Today, the Bennetts dive deep on the importance of empathy in all aspects of parenting and life. “I don't think it's ever going to be peaceful. I don't think we'll ever be perfect because everyone's perspectives, everyone's views, are so different. But I do think that if we just try to understand each other, whether I feel it was right or wrong, then we can keep moving forward.” Check out Michael & Pele's show Mouthpeace. "It’s time for us to put our titles down and acknowledge that we’re all human beings."Lewis is joined by Super Bowl Champion Michael Bennett to discuss the NFL's response to the protests against racial injustice, Michael's opinions on the relationship between athletes and activism, and whether he had any fear of backlash when he began publicly supporting Colin Kaepernick. They also discuss Michael's journey from undrafted free agent to Pro Bowl defensive end, what he's learned from being a father to three daughters, and his new podcast, "Mouthpeace."-For more: lewishowes.com/964-Check out: Lewis' impactful interview with Reverend Michael Beckwith-Text: 614-350-3960 to start a conversation with Lewis

The Sports Bubble with Jensen Karp

Michael Bennett may be soft-spoken, but make no mistake about it, his voice is powerful. As an NFL defensive end for 11 seasons and a Super Bowl Champion, there's no question Michael's a force to be reckoned with on the field, but that all seems secondary to who Michael really is - a man leading hard conversations against racial inequality, police brutality, and toxic masculinity in the NFL. Michael joins Jensen to talk about growing up scared of the police, what the murder of George Floyd means as a black man in America, and Michael's own terrifying experience with police brutality in 2017. Michael shares why he is optimistic that the current demonstrations and protests led by young people will bring about real change and why he and his wife, Pele, talk about social issues and injustice with their daughters and on their podcast, “Mouthpeace with Michael & Pele Bennett”. On this special episode to address the unfolding resistance against racist police violence and white supremacy, Derek speaks with Michael Bennett, a Super Bowl champion and three-time pro-bowl defensive lineman in the National Football League. Michael is the author, with Dave Zirin, of the wonderful book Things That Make White People Uncomfortable with Haymarket Books and co-host of the podcast Mouthpeace with Michael Bennett and Pele Bennett (@Lemonadamedia). Derek and Michael grapple with why the rebellions are occurring right now and what they say about racial injustice and white supremacy in US society. They also engage the question of whiteness and the role and responsibilities of white people in this moment. In the latter half of the episode, they connect structural racism in US society to elite sport and the ways in which athletes are relentlessly dehumanized by fans, team owners, and fantasy sports. Finally, Michael responds to recent comments by Drew Brees that have drawn the ire of players across the NFL. As Michael explains on the show, it is the responsibility of white people to educate themselves about the history of racism in North America and how it structures our societies today. Check out the latest episode of Mouthpeace with Michael and Pele Bennett. In this very special episode, Michael and Pele share their solidarity with George Floyd and others around the world protesting police violence. The episode is exactly 8 minutes and 46 seconds long...as we know, this is the exact amount of time that George Floyd was pinned to the ground by Minneapolis police on May 25, 2020. Some particularly valuable resources include the books below: Angela Davis: Are Prisons Obsolete? Pele Bennett is no slacker either: she’s a food advocate and a skilled Polynesian dancer. Together, the Bennetts have taken on everything from racial justice work to authoring a children’s book to parenting three daughters. (Did we mention they’re high-school sweethearts?) In Mouthpeace, the Bennetts invite listeners and guests into their professional and private lives to take on topics provocative and personal: from sitting out the national anthem to keeping their sex life fresh. Like Michael and Pele, Mouthpeace manages to be many things at once: hilarious, inquisitive, and unfiltered. NSFW: explicit content. First episode drops January 31, 2020. GUY MENDILOW BAND delivers a delightful, international blend of Israeli, Middle-Eastern, Sephardi and Blues and performs in Hebrew, Arabic, Ladino, Portuguese and English. The five members of the Guy Mendilow Band create intricate textures with berimbaus, percussion, jaw harps that would make beat-boxers' jaws drop, and Mendilow's award-winning overtone singing. The band's latest CD is "Skyland." STILL ON THE HILL is the folkgrass duo from Arkansas, Kelly Mulhollan and Donna Stjerna. This duo uses traditional instruments from their home in the Ozarks (mandolin, banjo, fiddle, guitar, harmonica and scrub board) as well as other exotic offerings (Moon guitar from Japan, African Mbira, and Tenor Ukulele) to create a kaleidoscope of musical color and texture. They have been voted "Best Folk Band" in the Ozarks for several years running, and the mayor of their town, Fayetteville, Arkansas, proclaimed Dec. 20th Still on the Hill Day for all the work the duo does in community service. "Mouthpeace" is their newest release.
