Solo ataviado con un bañador azul, y una ocurrencia extraña, explorar el condado nadando de piscina en piscina hasta llegar a su casa. Frank Perry dirigió este onírico film basado en un relato de John Cheever, y guion adaptado de su esposa Eleanor Perry. El proyecto tomó altura con el torso apolíneo de Burt Lancaster, un actor maduro y reconocido. Se ha propuesto nadar a través de un río de piscinas al que llama Lucinda, el nombre de su mujer, quiere volver a verla, y sus hijas, seguramente le estarán esperando jugando al tenis. No sabemos que puede haber ocurrido en la vida de este playboy venido a menos, así le dice a un compadre de pasadas correrías, “si las mujeres fueran malas para la salud yo estaría en una silla de ruedas”. Ned aún se siente en forma, por eso intenta besar a su antigua niñera, aquella jovencita ahora es una mujer, y en una escena algo ridícula intenta correr al mismo ritmo que un corcel, a cámara lenta y con la música de aeropuerto de Marvin Hamlisch.
