This week, we have a bonus episode of ‘Mehdi Unfiltered' because there's no shortage of news to cover. On Sunday, we saw another assassination attempt on former President Trump at his golf club in West Palm Beach, Florida, with the alleged shooter having an AK47-type rifle on him. As upset as the Republicans are, their outrage over this second assassination attempt on Trump has its limits. It stops at gun control.Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost, a Democrat from Florida, the first member of Generation Z to be elected to Congress, and the former National Organizing Director for March for Our Lives, the youth-led movement in support of gun control, joins Mehdi in studio to talk about the attempted attack and the failure of gun reform in in the US so far. Also on the show, Zeteo contributor, award-winning actor and activist Cynthia Nixon discusses Barnard College's latest restrictions on its faculty when it comes to speech, freedom of expression, and pro-Palestinian sentiment on its campus. Nixon is a Barnard alumna and had a lot to say, including on the recent suspensions of students, which left many without health insurance and, in some cases, even housing. And finally, justice correspondent for The Nation, Elie Mystal discusses Republican vice-presidential candidate JD Vance's dangerous peddling of fake stories about Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio. It's led to serious threats against Springfield schools, hospitals, city officials, and the city's Haitian population. Mystal is of Haitian descent and recently wrote for the Nation: ‘White People Have Never Forgiven Haitians for Claiming Their Freedom'. He joins the show to talk about his piece; the racist, Republican-led narrative being pushed; and the bigger picture. We hope you enjoy this week's bonus episode of ‘Mehdi Unfiltered'. Be sure to join the conversation in the comments - including telling us what you thought of this week's guests. (We really do read what you have to say!)And in case you missed it, be sure to check out Mehdi's exclusive interview with Jill Stein from Monday.  This is a public episode. For decades, the global North has pushed their plastic waste out-of-sight by exporting low-value plastic waste to the global south and China. In 2017, China stopped accepting plastic waste from other countries, and now an international agreement called the Basel Agreement would restrict plastic exports to countries that aren't equipped to deal with plastic waste. Yet, the US has not ratified this agreement and continues to export more than 20 million tons of plastic waste every month, mostly to Malaysia. It took a century long struggle for American women to “win” the right to vote in 1920. And win does not accurately reflect a struggle in which women were jailed and beaten in pursuit of that right. This victory led suffragist Carrie Chapman Cott to establish the League of Women Voters (LWV), a non-partisan champion of voting rights. Now, LWV is convening national conversations about issues from the census to voting to the environment and immigration. And LWV is vigilant about local threats to voting access and rights. It works to prevent gerrymandering, the intentional dilution of political power by one party over another and by majorities over minorities. The LWV is making the structural changes needed to remain powerful and relevant into the future. It is retooling itself into a more inclusive and diverse organization and Alma Couverthie, the new National Organizing Director, is an important part of its evolution. A longtime community organizer, Alma is opening doors to new participants while honoring the contributions of veteran members. When you hear her, you will want to head to LWV.org and get involved. You can read the full transcript of this episode here.Hi, this is Anna Callahan and you’re listening to Incorruptible Massachusetts. Our goal is to help people understand state politics: we’re investigating why it’s so broken, imagining what we could have here in MA if we fixed it, and reporting on how you can get involved. Today I’m interviewing Erika Uyterhoeven and Matt Miller from Act on Mass.Act on Mass enables grassroots groups and activists to effectively advocate for progressive legislation at the state level and to hold State Representatives publicly accountable. We do this through a combination of political education, reporting, and campaign-style organizing and voter mobilization. Check out their amazing Transparency pledge at www.ActOnMass.org/pledge.Erika Uyterhoeven was a National Organizing Director for Bernie 2016 and was Head of Digital and Data for Momentum, supporting the 2017 UK snap election for Labour and Jeremy Corbyn. Most recently, she worked with Marshall Ganz on narrative and organizing trainings.Prior to his work at Act on Mass, Matt Miller has held positions as Field Director and Campaign manager on local electoral races (City Council & State Rep) in the Boston area. Act on Mass is a relatively new organization, and they’re tackling something that I think is really smart strategy. For comparison, Mass Alliance builds the coalition that we need to work together for all the issues we care about. Progressive Mass (we’ll hear from them in a future episode) has an amazing scorecard that allows anyone in the state to see if their rep is really as progressive as they say they are. Act on Mass has honed in on one of the main ways that our state house is broken, and they’re providing all of us a way around it. There are a lot of ways the establishment maintains power. Lack of transparency is a huge one, and another is to keep those few times that bills do become public as short as possible. This makes it almost impossible for us residents of Massachusetts to push our State Reps to do anything — by the time we find out that a bill is going to be voted on, they’ve already voted. Often there is less than 24 hours between when a bill comes out of committee and when the vote will be held, which can be barely enough time to read the bill.Act on Mass tackles this issue in some really brilliant ways, and it was exciting to hear about their work and how they see change happening at the state level.Without further ado, here is my interview with Act on Mass.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/incorruptible_massachusetts)

Aired Tuesday, 29 January 2019, 5:00 PM ESTIt’s Time For Right and Left to Come Front and Center to UNRIG the SystemAn Interview with Represent.Us National Organizing Manager James Jameson“It seems that government of, by and for the people is missing a key component — the PEOPLE.” — Swami BeyondanandaI’ve said it before, and it is worth repeating. In these times of intense political polarization, we have a DEEPLY UNITED body politic. More than 90% of us agree — we aren’t being represented … the two-party system is rigged … we need to make sure that the “free speech” of unbridled campaign spending doesn’t drown out the free speech that points us beyond the status quo.Consider the 2014 study by Princeton University Professor Martin Gilens and Northwestern University Professor Benjamin Page that concluded that the USA is for all intents and purposes an “oligarchy” because the views of the general public have very little sway over what legislation does or doesn’t get passed — particularly when the public will is in conflict with the special interests who “own” the politicians. Consider this mind-blowing statistic: On average, a US Senator must raise $14,000 a month for six years to pay for her or his re-election campaign. That’s some $30.6 million! Do the math … do the aftermath!Meanwhile, according to CBS News some $6.8 billion was spent on the 2016 Presidential election, while just 31% of the people thought the election process “was working as well as it could.”If we consider that $6.8 billion is larger than the economies of Argentina and Poland, that’s a lot of money to spend on a campaign that leaves 70% of us unsatisfied!Fortunately, my guest today James Jameson, the National Organizing Director of Represent.Us, is here with some good news for a change — anti-corruption and election reform activists from across the political spectrum are uniting to “unrig the system” — and are planning their second annual Unrig the System Summit in Nashville at the end of March.James Jameson is an experienced political activist, who has worked on several successful campaigns in New England. Starting off with fundraising for the 2012 Marriage Equality campaign in Maine, James has led canvas efforts in three states and field efforts in two. During the 2016 election cycle, James was the New Hampshire Out-of-State Director for Bernie Sanders before joining his National Advance Team, traveling to 27 states, and building rallies of thousands of people. Since first getting into political campaigning, James has been passionate about electoral reform, and was involved with Maine’s Ranked Choice Voting victory.Represent.us has as its key platform piece the American Anti-Corruption Act, whose intention it is to:* Stop political bribery by making it illegal for lobbyists to lobby a politician and donate to their campaign. You can lobby, or you can donate, but you can’t do both. * End secret money so Americans know who is buying political power. * Fix our broken elections so the people, not the political establishment, are the ones in control. If you’re tired of the “dogma-eat-dogma” battle of the two political sides, you will find this conversation quite refreshing, as James discusses the American Anti- Corruption Act, and the dozens and dozens of successful state and local campaigns to end gerrymandering, install “ranked-choice voting” and other voting reforms, and establish public financing of elections. We've heard a lot about DACA, which stands for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals. To recap — Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA)  is an American immigration policy brought in by former president Barack Obama that allowed some individuals who entered the country as minors and stayed, to receive a renewable two-year permit which would free them from threat of deportation and allow them to have a work permit. The policy was overturned by President Donald Trump in September this year, but the fight is not over. United We Dream, was the famous American campaign that pushed President Obama to introduce the DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) program. Tomorrow in Toronto, Christopher Torres will speak about how the DREAMers helped win Americans hearts and minds in order to achieve the goal of normalizing the status of 800,000 young people. He will also speak about what's happening to fight back Trump's deportation order. He is in Canada right now, helping the Institute for Change Leaders celebrate its first anniversary.  He was in Ottawa on Saturday and in Toronto tomorrow (October 17, 2017) at an event being held at Ryerson University from 11:30 to 1:00.
