Happy Holidays from Randy and Steve! Instead of a single artist this week, we're going to dip into a little holiday comedy that will bring a smile to your face. Allan Sherman? Check! Elmo and Patsy? Check! Adam Sandler? Check! Doc Mo She (???) Check!!! You get the picture. And you also get our thanks for letting us be part of your holidays this year. As always, find extra cuts in the comments (and these are gems) and thanks for sharing our shows! Want more Holiday Humor? Jeff Foxworthy was a titan of standup comedy back in the 1990s and as all entertainers do, he adapted his shtick to the holidays and issued his version of the 12 Days of Christmas -- adding his "redneck" flavor to the proceedings. https://youtu.be/h8ISVIOgPJA?si=3yR6c1r-ARhM30UG We love Allan Sherman here and one of his best parodies was his take on the 12 Days, featuring some of the cheesier gifts of the moment. https://youtu.be/DgrkqDJFQoo?si=P3dWLQc1XKLJil-T Dave Thomas and Rick Moranis have created many fine comic characters, but none more beloved than those hosers from the Great White North, Bob and Doug McKenzie. A folk duo from Marin County, Elmo and Patsy cut this tune for fun, but it soon found its way onto radio playlists -- it was different, it was funny, and it was FCC clean! For DJs that was a Christmas miracle! https://youtu.be/MgIwLeASnkw?si=x1M2atIIojTp3VKl You don't usually associate Psychobilly/Roots wild man Mojo Nixon with Christmas tunes, but he weighed in with a naughty disc (Horny Holidays) back in 1992 and it had his great read on "Mr. Grinch"!https://youtu.be/A1YVehEGG6E?si=kFpqbEns4eQ0IQkJ The Christmas Jug Band is made up of some of the finest Marin County musicians and they come together once a year for a few fun and popular holiday concerts. A musical phenomenon capturing America's fancy during that Camelot period, just before Kennedy's assassination, HELLO MUDDAH, HELLO FADDAH, Allan Sherman's parody of “The Dance of the Hours” ballet, from the opera La Giocanda was a world-wide smash. (It made it to #2 on the Billboard Top 100, won the Grammy for best comedy performance, inspired books, a sitcom, a musical, numerous commercials, and has been translated into a multitude of languages.Sherman, born Allan Copelon (1924-1973) was a tragic clown who died young from a combination of alcoholism, obesity, and diabetes. His career was a roller coaster which careened from being a successful TV game show producer to ignominious unemployment, then back up to the heights of comedy success as a performer, before plummeting back down to earth and to his early death at the age of 48.Anyone who has ever attended a sleep away camp (as I did at Camp Snow Hill) can relate to this hilarious litany of mayhem, as well might the mothers and dads who may have gotten a summer vacation from parenting (but, also some separation anxiety). And, anyone who has ever attempted to write song parodies (me again - my finest hour being when Lewis Black performed my ditty “Candid Cancer” )- will count Allan Sherman as their Buddha - (his most notable descendent being Weird Al Yankovic). Brilliantly subversive, irresistibly charming - Sherman was a comedic supernova.
This week we sample some classic Halloween Humor from everyone ranging from Bo Diddley and Tom Lehrer to Joe Flaherty and Bobby "Boris" Pickett. While Christmas remains the big dog among holidays for comedy records, Halloween has a more than respectable showing, particularly in the 1940s and 60s, the heyday of novelty songs reaching the Billboard Top 40 charts. So if you aren't able to sneak enough candy from you child (or grandchild's) treat bag, enjoy these comedy confections (plus no calories). There's been humorous music almost as long as there's been music. So when combining the power of song to entertain and the punch of comedy to amuse, the result is often just as memorable as it is hilarious. From the earliest days of tunes by Spike Jones, Tom Lehrer and Allan Sherman, right up through contemporary work from the likes of Tenacious D, Garfunkel and Oates, and the undisputed parody king himself "Weird Al" Yankovic, fans of funny music have been spoiled for choice for decades. On this installment of FYF, Saint and Jim do a deep dive into some of the funniest artists ever to make us laugh with their melodic mirth.

"If I leave here tomorrow, would you still remember me?" Today on another encore episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast, we speak with Chrissy Quinn, who has not one, but two famous parents. Her father, Louis Quinn is perhaps best remembered for his role on televisions 77 Sunset Strip where he played lovable Roscoe The Bookmaker. However his show business career goes back to radio when he wrote for Milton Berle and we discuss some legends Louis worked with like Ray Bolger and Edd “Kookie” Byrnes. We also talk about her mother, Christine Nelson, a funny lady who is deeply connected to Allan Sherman – she is in fact Sarah Jackman from his My Son The Folk Singer as well as her own comedy album Didj'a Come Here to Play Cards, Or to Talk? for all you deep dive comedy nerds. We say that with affection by the way. We also hear about Chrissy's own comedy career, a bonkers story about befriending Robin Williams before he was a megastar on Mork & Mindy as well as stories about having the real Bozo-The Clown appear at her birthday, her Godfather Sammy Davis Jr. & her dad's role in the film: Vasectomy : A Delicate Matter. So join us won't you on this encore edition of the Rarified Heir Podcast. Everyone has a story.
What better way to celebrate the holidays than with some Allan Sherman, the master of novelty songs who burned brightly (but quickly) in the 1960s? One of the few performers of the day who embraced his Jewish heritage, Allan had a knack for putting clever lyrics to popular tunes. After President Kennedy was overheard quoting a Sherman song (Sarah Jackman), his career ignited. A later song (Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah) captured the public imagination by capturing the summer camp experience that most kids ACTUALLY have. The JFK assassination, which chilled US comedy, and the British invasion ended Sherman's fame as quickly as it began. But in recent years an excellent biography and a stage review have rekindled interest in Allan and his silly songs. As always, find extra cuts below and thanks for sharing our shows. Want more Allan Sherman? You can't do an Allan Sherman show without his magnum opus. "Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah (A Letter from Camp) resonated with anyone who had ever been near a summer camp. Very little video evidence of his work was saved, but this appearance on the Kraft Music Hall in 1963 does a good job of capturing his appeal. https://youtu.be/4yFTOvO0utY Allan's big break came when JFK was overheard singing his first hit -- "Sarah Jackman". It really captures his style -- clever lyrics set to familiar tunes. And it also features an excellent vocal assist from Christine Nelson. https://youtu.be/vpzLcFBv5zA Allan embraced his Jewish roots, never mores than on this opus -- a trip through punchlines galore -- "Shticks of One, Half a Dozen of the Other". Cue the rimshot! https://youtu.be/K2Cut3XwJxM Allan was reputed to have written many song parodies of Broadway musicals, but they never saw the light of day because of licensing issues. In recent years, though, a number of these gems have surfaced including this spot on parody of "76 Trombones" from The Music Man, except in Allan's version the sleepy town is replaced by a country club. And what does Allan find there? Why "76 Sol Cohens" of course! https://youtu.be/VjGe5kXqfQw

Much like Allan Sherman, Spike Jones and Stan Freberg before him, Alfred Matthew “Weird Al” Yankovic has made a career out of making funny music, song parodies and song styles. However, Weird Al has had a long and very successful career doing two things most people would think wouldn't get you very far in the business. Having fun and not taking himself seriously. Not only that. But doing it without being vulgar and dirty. Proving you can make people laugh without swearing or using sexual humor to sell your work. His career has had its ups and downs… but just when you think it's over, he comes back and does something that just catches peoples attention in a way that's just as extraordinary as the man himself. Now he's the subject of a biopic. Much like the man it features, it's not taken at all too seriously. So join Bret, Jamie, Andrew and Wayne as they discuss how they got into Weird Al's music and why they think he's been able to stay popular for so long. Because things are gonna get a little… weird!

Even if her wild play at pretending to be Mrs. Voorhees works in the moment, the payoff is obscured with... yet another dream ending! And our boys, Dev and Alex, are confused on just where exactly we leave our protagonists and who's left alive... well, who cares 'cause it's Friday the 13th and it'll be a whole new bunch of teens next film and Jason never dies. Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast we are talking to Chrissy Quinn. Chrissy's parents were a comedy team but not in the traditional sense. Her father, Louis Quinn was likely best known as Roscoe The Bookmaker on the popular television series 77 Sunset Strip. He also a writer for Milton Berle, a radio host and has credits in films as diverse as All The President's Men to Vasectomy: A Delicate Matter. Her mother, Christine Nelson is perhaps best known for her comedic singing role as “Sarah Jackman,” the foil to Allan Sherman's Jerry Bachman from the classic comedy album, My Son The Folks Singer. While they didn't perform together, Louis did write Christine's autobiographical comedy LP Did'ja Come Here to Play Cares, Or to Talk? Stories abound on this episode with comedians like Milton Berle, Ray Bolger and a ‘get-outta-here/ once-in-a-lifetime' story about meeting & befriending Robin Williams just as he is on the cusp of mega-stardom on Mork and Mindy. When you Godfather is Sammy Davis Jr. and Sean Penn & former Rarified Heir Podcast guest Jason Culp come to your 2nd birthday party hosted by the real llife Bozo-The-Clown…. well that is certainly Rarified Heir indeed. Take a listen.

April Fools' Day is on the horizon - not that anyone should be celebrating it, in this of all years. For what may be the worst of holidays, we listen to two jokes of songs - some old-fashioned parody songs, by listener request. "The 12 Gifts of Christmas" by Allan Sherman may be a so-so version of an overdone song, but it does deliver one very welcome holiday music innovation. "I Yust Go Nuts at Christmas" by Yogi Yorgesson, however, is yust a mess. Our ranking music this episode is "A Christmas Carol" by Tom Lehrer. Thank you to Matt and Tim for these requests!

My version of hello muddah hello faddah Camp Grenada by Allan Sherman
I have met my tangenting match. I went into this interview, backstage at the legendary Club Passim in Cambridge, Massachusetts, with a slate of questions for Steve Poltz, about his new album Shine On, about writing “You Were Meant For Me” with Jewel, about humor in music. I probably could have gotten a good hour with Steve with two or three questions. There is no telling where his mind might flash next. Just in terms of music, the conversation covered his early days with The Rugburns, Nirvana and 90s “goat music,” the Replacements, the Dead Milkmen, Mojo Nixon, Tom Lehrer, and Allan Sherman over the course of a few minutes. We talked about spirituality, Risky Business, Hyman Roth from Godfather II, Jesus, Marianne Williamson, Styx in another five-minute section. At one point, when I told Poltz the name of the podcast, he said, “We're living up to the name.” This breakneck tangenting is something you have experienced if you've seen Poltz onstage. I hadn't seen him play since he did an in-the-round show with Beaver Nelson, “Scrappy” Jud Newcomb, and Adam Carroll perhaps seventeen or eighteen years before. I certainly hadn't remembered this version of him. When he smiles, it splits his face almost completely, and he smiles a lot when he's not singing. He also jigs, which makes him seem like a Muppet version of Jimmie Dale Gilmore. The first several minutes onstage, he told stories, picked up his guitar and put it back down again, and threatened not to pick it up the rest of the show. It'll be there, he said, the audience would see it, but maybe he wouldn't use it. He played the Grateful Dead's “Althea” off the top of his head, which surprised even him. He apologized for the bad notes, but backtracked, saying, “Think of how many bad notes the Dead hit.” The new album is called Shine On, and you can find more info about that and Poltz on www.poltz.com, and find him on Facebook and Twitter under Steve Poltz. You can also find more about Club Passim at www.passim.org. And if you're intrigued by some of the music you heard in the background, that's Boston singer/songwriter Rachel Sumner, formerly of Twisted Pine, and you can find her stuff at www.rachelsumnermusic.com. I am currently putting together this year's Daily Horror Film Fest, for which I post a different short horror film every day in October. If you are a short horror filmmaker, or even if you just have a short horror film you love dearly, e-mail your suggestions to nick@nickzaino.com. And now for something completely different. Or maybe not. This week's featured track is "Comfort" from Secret Shame of Asheville, North Carolina, from their new album, out today, September 5th, called Dark Synmthetic. This new album would have sounded great in nestled somewhere in your collection with the Pixies, The Cure, and Nirvana. It's propulsive guitar rock, mixing glassy chorus and echo with heavy, distorted riffs to create this wide-open sound. From somewhere within that sound, singer Lena is trying to reach you through waves of reverb. Seven songs come in just under twenty-six minutes total. Not a note wasted. The band is kicking off a tour this week, and you can find them on BandCamp and Facebook to find out more.
In this episode I interview a bunch of teens and twenty-somethings about their favorite moments of camp this summer - both funny and inspirational. If you would like to help these young men change the world, here is the link; https://www.campdaniel.org/donate/year-intern/ The songs we use in this episode are the "Camp Granada Song" by Allan Sherman, "Intro To Anxiety" by Hoodie Allen, "The Halls Of Fear" from The Godfather Soundtrack by Nino Rota, Felix Mendelssohn's "Wedding March" from 'A Midsummer's Night Dream' arranged for drunk organist (or sober organist pretending to be drunk) by Jonathan Mui and "We Go Together" from the Secret Life Of Pets. REMEMBERING MUSIC CLASS 101 – as we recall how we first became acquainted with all those musical instruments. Our teachers are Michael Feinstein, Judy Garland, Horace Heidt, Danny Kaye, Boris Karloff, Allan Sherman and Harry James.
After a fond farewell to old friend Alice last week, we're back at Crystal Lake but a brand new location where surely nothing can go wrong, except bears. In this episode we get to know the new cast with the jokester, the badboy, the scantily clad, and trusty Wheels. So sit around the campfire as we give it to you straight about Jason; has he ever fought a bear? Why didn't he do anything if he saw his mom get decapitated? Is throwing menstrual pads at him a good defense? Intro: Let The Bodies Hit The Floor by Drowning Pool, Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah by Allan Sherman, and Itsy Bitsy by Joey Deluxe. Outro: Sail Away Tiny Sparrow by Harry Manfredi ft. Angela Routella --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/devon-elson/message
After a year or so sabbatical, the boys are back in town for a whole new summer and a whole new slasher. It's Friday the 13th Part II! And what better way to start the summer than with some nice, cold watermelon... except it's on top of the fridge, did someone move it to fit a severed head in there? Intro: Let The Bodies Hit The Floor by Drowning Pool, Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah by Allan Sherman, and Banjo Travellin' by Harry Manfredi. Outro: Sail Away Tiny Sparrow by Harry Manfredi ft. Gilbert and Frank are joined by Emmy-winning writer and Tony-winning composer David Yazbek ("The Full Monty," "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels," "The Band's Visit") for a funny and freewheeling conversation about the golden age of kiddie show hosts, the comedy albums of Spike Jones and Allan Sherman, the long-lost era of Top 40 radio and the trials (and triumphs) of composing music for the Broadway stage. Also, Jerry Lewis goes to therapy, Larry David whistles a happy tune, Gilbert remembers Kathleen Freeman and David weighs in on the "Baby, it's Cold Outside" controversy. PLUS: Umm Kulthum! It's the ultimate showdown, mom versus teen. In a battle that takes an entire episode to cover, because of the 13 minutes format. We're finally done with breaking down the original Friday and it's time to say goodbye to Pamela, but a pumpkin headed boy is about to say hello just over the horizon. This is the song that makes me laugh, smile & smirk most. The one that lights up my life. Your favourite? #Octaver2018 would love to hear what's your favourite. This is Paul O'Mahony's Day 3 contribution to Octaver2018 - topic suggested by Stefano Landi @slandi, in Montreal, Canada. You hear Jessye Norman sing from "Last Four Songs" by Richard Strauss. You hear Allan Sherman sing from "Hello Muddah, Hello Fadduh (A Letter from Camp)
One might think the boys actually want to do a Halloween podcast with the amount of times they mention those movies, but there's a new one coming so we pique our expectations and even consider if a certain Mr. Zombie chose the wrong slasher franchise to revitalize. In the actual minutes of the film we get two more kills despite the pace slowing considerably, some new backstory of Crazy Ralph, Brenda and her filthy bare feet, and some killer tactics never seen again. The boys get particularly horny with this segment as a particularly dumb sex pun is repeated far too many times. Things get a little quiet as the cast gets cut down but we pump up the jams with some music discussion including an obligatory dancing Sam Rockwell. Sorry for the slight audio issues this episode, I was fiddling with my headset/mic set up and audacity recorded from the laptop. We get both of these in 13 minutes plus a biblical revelation on doomsayer Ralph, a detailed take on the third wheel Ned, a comparison of Friday to the other 1980 horror Prom Night... and all led with an impassioned breakdown of a truly baffling horror sequel, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer. The boys have finally arrived at Camp Crystal Lake and quickly become acquainted with all the campers... except for poor, sweet Annie who never even makes it that far. Is she technically even a counselor even she never started work? We also discuss new lead Alice and her police sketches of prime '70's Steve, teenagers saying dumb things, why people were scared of trains back in the early days of cinema, and a new segment pitting Jason against a mystery opponent... and it sure is groovy. Radio legend Dr. Demento -- the man who popularized such oddball songs as "Fish Heads," "Wet Dream," and "Shaving Cream" -- visited my radio show to discuss his new project, "Covered In Punk." He was accompanied by John Cafiero, who produced the project, which plays like a two-hour Dr. Demento show with punk covers of some of the songs he first gave airplay to.We talked about how Dr. Demento's career began at one local station in Los Angeles and eventually grew to a weekly national show on rock stations across the country. We also discussed how he gave Weird Al Yankovic his start, why he appeared on an episode of "The Simpsons," and the influence of Spike Jones, Tom Lehrer, Allan Sherman, and Stan Freberg on his musical taste.Listen, then click here to subscribe to these podcasts via iTunes! Dr. Demento still does a weekly show, but now it streams online at his site.

The Stuph File Program Featuring Mark Cohen, author of Overweight Sensation: The Life and Comedy of Allan Sherman (Brandeis Series in American Jewish History, Culture, and Life); & Tami Gilbert, author of Courage to Persevere: A Compelling Story Of Struggle, Survival, And Triumph Download The late king of parody songs, Allan Sherman, is probably best known for his hit "Hello Muddah, Hello Fadduh", even though he has an extensive canon of classic songs. Mark Cohen has written the definitive biography on Sherman entitled Overweight Sensation: The Life and Comedy of Allan Sherman (Brandeis Series in American Jewish History, Culture, and Life). Everyone knows you should never share your salary with your coworkers. But what else is best kept to yourself? Tami Gilbert, an author, nurse and MBA holder who experienced bullying and betrayal at work, devotes an entire chapter to the topic in her new book, Courage to Persevere: A Compelling Story Of Struggle, Survival, And Triumph. This week's opening slate is presented by Robert Soroka, a marketing professor at both McGill University and Dawson College in Montreal.
