In the same year, she made her European debut with Internationale Bachakademie Stuttgart's JSB Ensemble under the baton of Hans-Christoph Rademann and received praise for her "crystal clear tone (that) conveyed a broad palette of emotional and vocal colors."During the 2024/25 season, Morgan will perform in Purcell's The Fairy Queen with Pinchgut Opera, appear as Susanna in Le nozze di Figaro with Pocket Opera, sing the soprano solo in Carmina Burana with Schola Cantorum and join Sacramento Baroque Soloists in Masterpieces from France.With a strong affinity for early music and the concert stage, Morgan has performed as a soloist with numerous companies, including Australian Brandenburg Orchestra, American Bach Soloists, Sydney Philharmonia, Canberra Symphony Orchestra and Cantata Collective. A major theme that reappears in episode after episode of Art Restart is the fact that audiences/consumers, institutions/businesses and sometimes even artists themselves often fail to recognize that art is labor, not a pastime or an unconventional way to earn a living. A recent labor action by America's premier ballet company served as a fresh reminder.On February 6 of this year, by an overwhelming majority, the dancers and stage managers of American Ballet Theatre voted to authorize a strike. Among their demands were an increase in wages that had been frozen since the Great Recession of 2008 as well as an adjustment to their working hours. Represented by their union, AGMA (American Guild of Musical Artists), after approximately three weeks of negotiations, the ABT company members and management were able to reach an agreement and avert a strike. The terms of the new agreement include cost-of-living increases of between 9 and 19% (varying by rank) across three years, their workday being shifted a half-hour earlier and reduced by one half-hour on Saturdays and new parental-leave benefits and a commitment to keep pregnant dancers on contract until the time of the dancer's choosing.In this interview, Art Restart speaks with Griff Braun, AGMA's national organizing director, who was himself once an ABT company member. In this episode, Elena Armijo interviews Ned Hanlon, the president of AGMA (American Guild of Musical Artists) union, about leadership and the future of the arts industry. Ned shares his journey to union leadership, starting with his involvement in negotiating his contract with the Metropolitan Opera. He found his calling in the legal and negotiation side of union leadership and has been actively involved for the past 10 years. The pandemic has served as a wake-up call for artists, making them realize the importance of taking care of each other through unions. Companies cannot always provide stability, and artists need to rely on collective action to protect their interests. Ned's goals as AGMA president are to build solidarity through alliances with other unions, empower artists to speak up, and protect them from retaliation. One of the key focuses of the union is diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility. This is addressed both internally within the union and during contract negotiations with companies. By addressing these important issues, the union aims to create a safer environment for artists, tackling problems like harassment and discrimination. Ned sees his role as a facilitator rather than the sole leader. He believes in harnessing the collective power of union members and building consensus. Effective negotiations involve understanding all perspectives, finding common ground, and being willing to exert collective power if necessary. However, Ned emphasizes the importance of avoiding "scorched earth" tactics that can harm all parties involved. Looking to the future, Ned's hope is for the arts industry to survive its current difficulties. He wants all artists to feel empowered to improve their work conditions without fear, and he believes the union can play a crucial role in creating a safe and supportive environment for artists to speak up and advocate for themselves. IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Kathryn Van Meter Kathryn Van Meter was the inaugural recipient of the Heilman & Haver 2021/2022 Best Choreography Award for Beauty and the Beast at the 5th Avenue Theatre. A champion of large scale community theatrical adventures, Kathryn choreographed As You Like It for Seattle Repertory Theatre's PUBLIC WORKS program, and directed and choreographed Matilda at Village Theatre where she worked with Star 101.5 to generate The Matilda Movement, a program honoring local youth making a difference in their community. Kathryn also served as the Interim Artistic Director of Seattle Children's Theatre, where she created Ghost Light Stories, a weekly web series of ghost stories designed to help children process fear and anxiety around COVID- 19 and produced and directed So Many Heroes, a National Song of Thanks, with 75 youth from 16 cities across America. Kathryn's work as a teaching artist has taken her around the world from Iowa to South Africa and Siberia. As an artist/activist, Kathryn worked with A.S.T.E.P. (Artists Striving to End Poverty) to develop One World Through Theatre, a generative theatrical conversation between students in South Africa, North Carolina, and Washington. She was the series choreographer for the NETFLIX Original Series 13 Reasons Why and Crater, an upcoming feature for Disney+ and she recently made her debut as Intimacy Coordinator for the NETFLIX Original Series ECHOES, which spent two weeks at #1 worldwide. In 2016 she worked with the US Dept. of Labor to develop the national definition for the occupation of “Choreographer.” She is a five time nominee and two time Gregory Award winner for Choreography, and was the 2018 People's Choice winner for Directing and Outstanding Performance as a Lead Actor. Kathryn holds a BA in Theatre and a Minor in Dance from The College of William and Mary. She has served on the National Board of Governors for AGMA, the Seattle Liaison Committee for Actors Equity and was the Chair of the Seattle Steering Committee for the Society of Directors and Choreographers. I've been to New York City many a number of times through auditions and to see operas primarily. As of late my trips to NYC have almost exclusively been in my role as a National Officer in my union, AGMA. These trips usually take up all my time and leave no time for ‘fun' – something I was resolved to change if possible. With that in mind as I sat down on my early morning train, fired up my phone, and searched for ‘Broadway Shows on Mondays'. I presumed theatres were (historically) dark on my one free night. To my pleasant surprise there were a fair number of ‘off-Broadway' shows with performances that evening. When I scrolled down and saw “The Imbible: A Spirited History of Drinking” – I simply had to attend. [The fact that there were three drinks included in the price of admission didn't hurt either!] Realizing that this isn't a theatre review podcast/blog, I still need to point out that this was a fantastic show. What writer/staring Anthony Caporale has put together both a thoroughly enjoyable night out – and manages to have everyone also leave just a little bit more knowledgeable about the ‘party & dance' drug humans have been enjoying for millennium. Was it a theatrical revelation a la “Hamilton”? Certainly not. Was it the the most entertaining alcoholic beverage presentation I've ever come across in my life – most definitely. Anthony and I sat down after the performance to talk a little bit about the show and taste his Raspberry Creamsicle Old Fashioned (the show's second featured drink). This cocktail served as a reminder that modern twists on classic cocktails don't have to sacrifice the celebration of the spirit. Without reservation, I recommend seeing if there's a performance for this – or any of their other ‘variations' (There are brunch, holiday, and pirate versions seasonally in rep too!) when you are next in NYC.

Members of the stagehands union were advised this week to prepare for a picket at the Metropolitan Opera in anticipation of a lockout. And according to one union source involved in the current talks between the Met and 12 of its unions, "there's virtually no chance of a deal" this week. The Met has pushed its contract deadline to Sunday night while a third-party financial analyst has been examining its books for over a week. But sources independently confirmed that the parties remain far apart on monetary and philosophical issues. If talks break down, a lockout could happen as early as Monday. So where will the Met labor dispute end up? And how are the different parties making their cases? In this podcast, three views: James Jorden, editor of the opera blog Parterre Box and a contributor to the New York Observer. Drew McManus, an arts consultant who writes the blog Adaptistration. Lois S. Gray, a Professor of Labor Management Relations Emeritus at Cornell University. Subscribe to Conducting Business on iTunes Segment Highlights: Why not continue to talk and prepare for the season without a contract? McManus: "All of this circles around using deadlines as bargaining leverage. There's no way that playing and talking can continue indefinitely." Gray: "One of the reasons why the Met is forcing an early deadline before the season starts is that during the season, the leverage would be on the part of the union, to call a strike while the production is on." Why haven't the company's stars been more vocal in the dispute? Jorden: "From what I hear, there's a real division in AGMA [the singers' union] between the principals and chorus, stage managers and other groups. AGMA is basically a chorus union. I don't think there would be that much enthusiasm on the part of the principals to say, 'oh yes, we really need to support AGMA.'" How is the union's P.R. strategy of attacking general manager Peter Gelb working for them? McManus: "It's worth pointing out that the animosity that's being directed toward Gelb has not been directed towards the organization's board of directors. They've been pretty much been off-limits. You have to have a way for either side to save face. In this case, by not attacking the board and focusing on Gelb instead, it doesn't target the board's reputation for governance. If they decide to meet the musicians on Gelb's management style, that's more oversight." Has the Met effectively made its case to the public, that it needs to save money through cuts to labor costs? Gray: "Does the Met have to cut costs or does it have to raise more money? This is an issue for symphony orchestras throughout the United States and it's true of the whole cultural sector." McManus: "The Met's strategy so far has been a zero-sum bargaining strategy: 'Here's the percentage of cuts and we're willing to talk about where the cuts have to happen.'
