This week on The Whiskey Trip, Big Chief rolls into the beating heart of the South—Atlanta, Georgia—where whiskey meets modern art in a way you've never seen before. He sits down with Matt Greif, the visionary Head Distiller at Distillery of Modern Art, a place where creativity flows as freely as the spirits. It's not just a distillery—it's an immersive experience. Picture this: a contemporary art gallery that champions local talent, wrapped in the aroma of oak barrels and filled with the hum of conversation and clinking glasses. Here, art and whiskey dance together in perfect harmony. Matt starts things off by pouring Big Chief a dram of their 100% corn whiskey—and what a first impression. On the nose, it's a bouquet of baking spices, honey cake, and dried flowers. A sip reveals a delicious tapestry of fruit compote, peanut brittle, and the warm savoriness of roasted corn. It's bold. It's elegant. It's a conversation in a glass. Then comes something truly rare—a corn whiskey finished in amburana barrels. Big Chief leans back, eyes wide. “Oh my,” he says, stunned by the complexity. It's the first finished corn whiskey he's ever tasted, and hands-down the best. With whispers of spice and soft sweetness, it's a breakfast whiskey worthy of sunrise sips and Sunday mornings. But the journey doesn't stop there. Matt brings out their bourbon, crafted from a mash bill of 67% white corn, 21% Abruzzi rye, and 12% malted barley. The flavor? A lush profile of dried and stewed orchard fruits, kissed with honey and a soft floral finish. It's the kind of pour you reach for before a perfectly seared steak—a whiskey that sets the tone. To close the show, they dive into the rye whiskey, a masterpiece made with 70% Abruzzi rye, 15% white corn, and 15% malted barley. Notes of crisp apple open the door, followed by baked cinnamon apple pie and the smooth richness of vanilla ice cream. It finishes with spearmint and spiced tea—a finale worthy of a standing ovation. Each pour, each bottle, each sip—uniquely Atlanta. This isn't just whiskey. It's Georgia's spirit, bottled with pride. This episode isn't just about tasting whiskey. It's about tasting culture, community, and craft. It's a love letter to a city that's rewriting the story of Southern spirits. This is The Whiskey Trip. Cheers, y'all.

Marvin Nesbitt, senior director of community development with Focused Community Strategies, joins host Carol Morgan on this week's Atlanta Real Estate Forum Radio episode. In this podcast episode, Nesbitt discusses Focused Community Strategies' recent developments in South Atlanta neighborhoods. Focused Community Strategies Mission For 25 years, Focused Community Strategies has worked diligently in South Atlanta to assist under-resourced communities and create the conditions for individuals to thrive at home. Focused Community Strategies utilizes three pillars for every project it takes on. Neighborhood engagement: Some current projects include health and wellness fairs, a food co-op and youth group activities. The organization offers these engaging events in partnership with the local Civic League. Affordable options for mixed-income households: Focused Community Strategies has built and sold over 200 affordable homes since its inception. This approach creates a sense of stability for the South Atlanta residents that the organization supports. Economic development: Focused Community Strategies' reach goes beyond real estate; the organization also finds ways to invest in the neighborhood's economy. Community Grounds, the organization's coffee shop provides a comfortable place for gathering and offers stable job opportunities, while its small market sells nutritious produce with affordable price tags. Nesbitt asked himself, “How do we create opportunities for future and further investment in the neighborhood while addressing the issues of food insecurity and economic mobility through workforce development?” Mixed-Use Development at Brownsville Pointe The organization recently acquired land in Brownsville and plans to transform it into Brownsville Pointe, a small but vibrant mixed-use development. South Atlanta residents can anticipate 18 apartment units, with 12 of those available affordably. When Nesbitt approached residents and neighborhood leadership about their desires for the project, there was a lot of demand for a sit-down restaurant. He says that Brownsville Pointe's commercial space will likely transform into an eatery upon completion of the development. The project is currently in the environmental remediation phase, but Focused Community Strategies plans to break ground this summer. “Brownsville Pointe, if you don't know, was the original name of historic South Atlanta before that name was changed decades ago,” said Nesbitt. “So, it's just our way of honoring the rich history and tradition of the neighborhood.” Challenges of Building in South Atlanta Nesbitt emphasizes that Focused Community Strategies' strong relationship with the Civic League provides much-needed clarity between residents and developers. Communication between both parties has eliminated most of the challenges, but the increasing popularity of the Atlanta Beltline has raised the costs of acquisition. “We have to compete with investors for opportunities and development in the footprint,” said Nesbitt. “All of that is just driving up cost and making opportunities or shrinking opportunities for nonprofit organizations like ours to continue to do the good work and ensure that there are homeownership opportunities.” Investing in Existing Neighborhoods Nesbitt believes in “stayfacation,” the affirmation that legacy homeowners should continue to have a place in the neighborhood and promote its values and traditions. In the spirit of neighborhood revitalization, Focused Community Strategies has partnered with the Community Foundation of Greater Atlanta and the City of Atlanta to breathe new life into Thomasville Heights. The organization supports legacy homeowners with anti-displacement services like home preservations and critical repairs since it's a neighborhood of choice for many homeowners. It has also assisted the Atlanta Urban Development Corporation in finding a developer for the old Thomasville Heights site as it...

Bekx hails from the Heart of the South-Atlanta, Georgia. A city teeming with talent and a remarkably diverse musical industry. And even though she moved to Catalina Island off the coast of Southern California at an early age, Atlanta had already left its mark on her life to come. As a child, she was drawn to the stage. First with impromptu, but very choreographed performances, as famous choreographers from LA would travel to Catalina, the Island of Romance, and work with developing the children there. Then, by her early teens, she found herself in front of audiences in more prominent settings, like the Wilshire Ebell Theater in LA, as well as the famous Casino Theater on Catalina Island. Now, Bekx has launched her career into the music industry as she draws off her childhood years spent camping, surfing, horseback riding, hunting and fishing, as well as her years of vocal training, performances, competitions and so much time just doing what she loves–singing. She has grown as a performer, as an artist and as a person–she has dedicated her life to chasing her musical dreams and is excited to share her story and her talents with anyone who will listen. Now, she is eager to introduce youto Bekx. The journey hasn't been easy. Bekx has had her share of growing pains, life lessons and difficult or deals along the way. But no matter what has happened, she has always overcome and has used those experiences to mold a fresh new outlook on life. As a songwriter and performer, she summons both the good times and the challenging as she seeks to breathe life into her music and invite others to feel the emotions behind her powerful vocals.Bekx has come a long way since Atlanta first left its mark. She has lived in multiple cities from coast to coast and met many diverse and influential people. In early 2019, the journey led her to Nashville, where she plans to leave her mark on listeners and labels alike. Already in her short time in Music City, she has been in the studio with Grammy-winning country artist Rebecca Lynn Howard and rising hip-hop star JC. She has worked alongside veteran artist & producer, Lincoln “Barnone” Morris. She released her first single, “Scissors”, in June 2019, and confidently celebrated its rise to #51 on the Music Row charts. She followed that release with an original and exciting Christmas song, “I Still Believe”, as well as her firstEP,Rabbit Hole. Recently, she has completed a radio tour across the southeast, made an appearance on the Red Carpet in LA at the Saturn Awards, and has performed twice at the music festival SXSW in Austin,TX. Bekx has been in the studio for the last three years, churning out the lyrics and vocals for all of her current and upcoming original releases. Founded in the late 19th century, South Atlanta was a thriving Black mixed-income neighborhood with Black businesses, churches, and other institutions that fostered a strong fabric of connection and belonging. As years of disinvestment harmed the neighborhood, many of the single family homes went vacant and eventually blighted. At FCS, we quickly realized that if we were going to partner with this place to produce a flourishing neighborhood, we were going to get into the work of buying, rehabbing, building, and selling single family homes. In today's episode, Shawn is joined by Cynthia and Marvin to discuss the many things we have learned by entering into the beauty and challenge of single family housing.

Gentrification is a word that has lost its context, simply coming to mean that the wealthy are getting nice, new things built for them and legacy residents, who are disproportionately lower-income people of color, are getting displaced. Their history and legacy are getting replaced one coffee shop and brewery at a time. This narrative makes headlines, but is it the story that is actually playing out? FCS has said that a healthy mixed-income strategy can do development without displacement. But is a mixed-income approach just a new term for the same traumas being visited upon historically Black and brown neighborhoods? Join Shawn Duncan in conversation with Jim Wehner, Joi Jackson, and former South Atlanta neighbor, Lisa Haygood.

Were back with Dem Vinyl Boyz this week and were diving into the debut album of Atlanta's most iconic rap group, OutKast. Their debut album "Southernplayalisticadillacmizik" released April 26, 1994, was largely influential in the Atlanta rap scene and helped distinguish Southern hip hop as a credible hip hop scene during East Coast and West Coast hip hop's market dominance at the time. "Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik" incorporates analog elements such as Southern-styled guitar licks, languid soul melodies, mellow 1970s funk grooves, digital hip hop production elements such as programmed snare beats, booty bass elements, including Roland TR-808 clave rhythms, and old school hip hop elements, including E-mu SP-1200-styled drums and turntable scratches. Wanting to make a statement about urban life as an African American in South Atlanta, OutKast wrote and recorded the album as teenagers and addressed coming of age themes with the album's songs.  "Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik" charted at number 20 on the Billboard 200 and was eventually certified Platinum in the United States, denoting one million copies sold. After the album was certified platinum, LaFace Records gave Outkast more creative control and advanced money for their 1996 follow-up album ATLiens, which some consider to be an all time classic. Vibe Magazine included the album on a 2004 list of "51 Essential Albums "that represent" a generation, a sound, and in many cases, a movement", writing that OutKast, determined the South had something to say, and after emerging from the Dungeon production lab, they said it all, sometimes sang it all—pointedly, funkdafied, and putting on absolutely no East Coast pretense. Classic." Thanks for tuning in to Dem Vinyl Boyz, like and subscribe!! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
