PRESS REVIEW – Friday, January 10: The Lebanese press reacts to parliament finally electing a new president – Joseph Aoun – after two years of deadlock. Also, as deadly fires destroy thousands of homes in Los Angeles, Donald Trump attempts to capitalise on the natural disaster for political gain. Plus, Novak Djokovic will begin his Australian Open campaign with a new coach: his former rival Andy Murray. Lebanon finally has a new president. After two long years and multiple failed attempts, the country was finally able to elect a new leader: Joseph Aoun. The former army commander is a respected figure. In the press, the satisfaction and relief are palpable. "Return of the state", says L'Orient-Le Jour with a picture of the presidential seat filled. The editor of the French-language Lebanese daily is cautiously optimistic. There is also stupefaction. The paper outlines how the country's lawmakers managed to do in two hours what they could not do in two years. The Arab-language Annahar also hails the return of the state but outlines the many challenges that lie ahead for Aoun moving forward. This includes, first and foremost, naming a government, which will be no easy feat. The pro-Hezbollah paper Al Akhbar is playing down Aoun's victory, calling him a president without a coalition and noting that Lebanon's deeply divisive political fractures are the reason it was unable to elect a president for two years.There is also lots of focus in the press on the deadly fires in Los Angeles that have destroyed nearly 10,000 homes. The British daily The Sun headlines "LOST ANGELES". The devastation of the worst fires in LA's history has spared no one: rich or not, famous or not.For Libération, the French paper, it's "City of Ashes", not City of Angels.Meanwhile, Donald Trump has weighed in on the devastation, calling on California governor Gavin Newsom to resign. The Huffington Post reports that Donald Trump Jr and Elon Musk have bizarrely pointed the finger at diversity, inclusion and equality initiatives in California as one of the reasons why the fires haven't been contained yet. This in reference to Los Angeles' efforts to diversify the overwhelming white, male firefighting force.In a Daily Beast piece that seems right out of TV show "The Morning Show", the press also picked up on the story of a millionaire who pleaded for private firefighters to save his home. The LA businessman, Keith Wasserman, wrote on X that he was willing to pay private firefighters to save his Pacific Palisades home. He later clarified that he wanted to save homes, but the damage was done. The real estate investment founder was slammed for appearing tone deaf and outright selfish. The anger was compounded when users discovered his old posts complaining about property taxes and bragging about not paying them ... those very taxes that are used to fund the fire department in LA.Finally, the Australian Open is nearly upon us. Ten-time champion Novak Djokovic will be playing this year with a new coach by his side: his former adversary Andy Murray. It's an unusual move which means that Murray will be making his debut as coach at this Australian Open.The Guardian explains that Murray, who retired in August, had absolutely no interest in coaching until the unique trial coaching position was offered to him. The two players were fierce rivals for many years and both have extremely explosive personalities. Murray said he is braced for angry outbursts by Djokovic during the Australian Open. If anyone can understand the loneliness of tennis, it's certainly Murray. Today on Truth in Politics and Culture we review the court decisions in Trump's various trials, the Biden Administration uses Israel's mishap with a missile that killed civilian aid workers to prop up President Biden's failing progressive support, and we talk about some of the philosophies that are wearing down Western Civilization and undermining U.S. culture.

The Hurricanes Poua team performed a haka before its first game of the Super Rugby Aupiki season last weekend, which was critical of the coalition government. They altered the haka, and referred to people being "puppets of this redneck government". Many times, over many years, I've said that politics and sport have no place on the same grounds. I've also felt that the respect that the haka is held in is sometimes questioned. I have seen some of the most amazing haka performed that would bring tears to your eyes, and I've also seen it used in places that a haka shouldn't be. And I'm sure, yesterday at the Wellington secondary schools McEvedy Shield athletics meet, there would have been some of the best haka in the nation. For a sporting team to use the haka for personal, political gains, for me is despicable. And for a team to use it as a statement about a political situation I feel is totally inappropriate. Hurricanes CEO Avan Lee initially said they were looking into it, but there was no intention for disciplinary action. He made it clear they're not supportive of the language used in the haka and don't wait it used again. Lee also said he would be apologising to the Government. I feel for Avan Lee - he's in a position he didn't know he would be, the actions had nothing to do with him, and he's been pushed in front of a very loaded bus. How he's going to get out of this situation I don't know, and my thoughts are with him. However, trustee for Women in Rugby Aotearoa Alice Soper backed what the players were doing. Soper supported the players doing the same haka again in round two this weekend, because "women's sports have a history of their origins coming from protest." Well, Alice, I hope you are in the stands and I hope you take a lot of friends, as there weren't many people in that stadium watching the haka the other day. And if I was going to make a political stand in my haka, and I was in women's rugby, I'd be saying to people "Come on, the challenge is for you to come and support us, pack the stadium, pack the ground so we can get paid more money". If this happened under my control, i.e. with the Saints basketball team, I'd have no hesitation in apologising quickly. I would say to all our stakeholders - our sponsors, our customers, people that pay to go and watch the game, and anyone that's associated with the club over all the years - I'm sorry. And if players under my watch were involved in a political protest, using our Saints brand, that's been there for 40 years and with hundreds of players before them, and hundreds after them, they'd be given a severe speech. I'd ask them if they wanted still to be involved in the organisation that was promoting them, promoting their sport, and paying them, and if you want to be political, go and be a politician. Go and stand for a party and promote your personal thoughts and idealism. We're a sporting team, and we're here to play sport and entertain. We're not a vehicle to promote your personal agenda. In the wake of a hammer attack on Paul Pelosi at his San Francisco home, Democrats and media raced to blame Republicans for inciting the violence. They based their tendentious claims on bizarre social media posts expounding conspiracy theories. But the attack and the paranoia are symptoms of the psychosis - which was tied to long-term drug abuse. Michael Shellenberger writes: DePape lived with a notorious local nudist in a Berkeley home, complete with a Black Lives Matter sign in the window and an LGBT rainbow flag, emblazoned with a marijuana symbol, hanging from a tree. A closer look reveals the characteristics of a homeless encampment, or what Europeans call “an open drug scene.” In the driveway, there is a broken-down camper van. On the street is a yellow school bus, which neighbors said DePape occasionally stayed in. Both are filled with garbage typical of such structures in homeless encampments. The Uvalde Texas shooter was bullied at school.  Until this came to light, Democrats pretended to be champions of the oppressed.  Now, the real enemy is Republicans who oppose background checks (the shooter went through one) and gun lobbies that spend less than a single congressperson's discretionary budget each year.  Teacher's don't hold firearms safety courses, the NRA sets those up.  We've replaced God with a proprietary education and morality system that requires you sign field trip consent forms as it secretly tries to perform gender re-assignment procedures on your child.  These same people feel social workers could better assist violent offenders than law enforcement.  Why do they fail at everything?  Why does state-run media help them when the bad endings are so obvious?
