Jenn and Bradley go toe to toe over Rupert Sanders' remake of James O Barr's graphic novel, ‘The Crow' discussing why some remakes get mostly negative feedback due to their “legacy”. We revisit the original just in time for the new movie to come out. Based on James O Barr's gothic comic.
¿Quieres ayudarnos a seguir mejorando y creciendo? Why might The Crow (2024) Fail? If you missed it, the new trailer for The Crow 2024 dropped last week and in a special bonus episode, we're going to give you our live reaction to the new trailer. Needless to say, we aren't impressed and we have some concerns about the look, story, and how this new adaptation of James O. Barr's graphic novel made famous by Brandon Lee's 1994 portrayal might affect the legacy of a film that is very near and dear to many fans. What did you think of the trailer? Art may keep alive the spirit of those who have passed, but what if it breathes real life into them? What if the powers that balance the scales ask for payment on the other side? Last May, Christopher Balzano appeared on Tim Weisberg’s Midnight Society to talk about haunted movie curses. At some point, the conversation turned to the iconic graphic novel and film The Crow. The urban legend of the curse existed long before the on-set death of Brandon Lee, and the legacy of the weirdness surrounding them has only gotten deeper in the near three decades since the movie’s release. But what if James O’Barr accidentally created something in trying to work through his own pain.
I feel like everyone talks about this film's influence on the pro wrestler, Sting, but what about The Hardy Boyz? If you vacuum sealed their cargo pants to their legs, their outfits would be the exact same. Then add the high risk activities on perilously high objects and it's the same damn thing. Well, we didn't really get into that on the episode, but I have nothing better to do than to type nonsense words hoping to get some kind of metadata to supplement our dwindling numbers. What we do talk about is this film's similarities with such classics as Robocop, Spawn, and The Wraith. We also discuss the Lee Family Curse, which took the lives of Bruce and his son Brandon prematurely. The film was directed by Alex Proyas, who wrote and directed Dark City. He also directed over 100 music videos. The original comic of the same name was written by James O'Barr, as a means of coping with the loss of his fiancee. Did you know the film originally had the Skull Cowboy, just like the comic? Unfortunately, despite having a tremendous actor with Mike Berryman in the suit, and a very competent makeup and costume, Brandon Lee's tragic death on set meant they could not finalize the scenes and the character was cut. Music was performed by Graeme Revell, who you may recall from our episode on The Thirteenth Warrior. He was the lovely chap who wrote and entire musical score, just to be replaced by Jerry Goldsmith at the last minute. Ernie Hudson of Ghostbusters fame, plays Sgt. Albrecht, a well-meaning police officer trying to figure out what is going on as the denizens of his city are being executed in mysterious fashion. Michael Wincott, y'know that guy from Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, whose voice sounds like gravel covered in cigarette ashes? He plays the main villain, Top Dollar. Tony Todd, aka The Candyman, acts as Top Dollar's right hand man, Grange. David Patrick Kelly plays T-Bird, but you will likely remember him from The Warriors... *clink clink clink* "Waaaaaaarriors, come out to playeeeeeeee!" We do not linger on the tragedy of Brandon Lee's passing for too long. We also discuss the fact that there are no crows in the film! They are ravens. This whole movie is a sham. As the 2020 Democratic primaries move onto Super Tuesday, the time has come to discuss the record of Bernie Sanders in all things foreign policy. The good, the bad, and the ugly; we discuss it all. From his time as a high school student, running for student body president to raise money for Korean war orphans to the documentary filmstrip he made on the famous anti-war hero Eugene Debs, Bernie has a long history with anti-war, anti-imperialist beliefs. 100 FOR A HUNDRED!!!! 94. THE CROW (1994, dir. Alex Proyas) Continuing the theme of comic book films that don't fit the usual mold, The Crow is an adaptation of James O'Barr's story of Eric Draven and his love for his fiancée, Shelly. Both murdered on Devil's Night by a gang of criminals, Draven's vengeance lifts him from the dead to settle debts. Aided by a seasoned cop (Ernie Hudson), a young girl, and a mystical crow, Eric moves his way through the gang until no stone is left unturned. The score from The Cure, coupled with the unfortunate circumstances of Brandon Lee's death, helped cement its place as a beloved classic.
This is a different sort of episode from what you’ve come to expect from us. The three of us are in utter shock at the brazen, cowardly, illegal assassination of IRGC General Qassem Suleimani and the potential aftershocks to the Middle East as a whole. The U.S. is the closest it has ever been to all out war with Iran. This should scare you; it terrifies the fuck out of us. And with that in mind, we want to remind our listeners, especially those who are still in the military, of one very important thing: you don’t have to do this. You don’t have to deploy to the Middle East. You don’t have to sacrifice your own safety, nor those of your fellow troops, nor certainly the safety of the people of the Middle East (especially Iraqis and Iranians.) If you need an ear, email us anytime. You can also call us, leave a message, and we will call you back. You also can contact the fine folks at the GI Rights Hotline. Their information is below. The GI Rights Hotline provides accurate, helpful counseling and information on military discharges, AWOL and UA, and GI Rights: Why should I call 1-877-447-4487? If you are talking a comic book movie with a cult following, look no further than The Crow. Directed by Alex Proyas, and written by David J. Schow and John Shirley, The Crow is based on James O'Barr's comic book of the same name. Dedicated to both Brandon Lee and his fiancée, Eliza, the film stars Lee in his final performance. Comiczone's Gareth and Adam talk all things The Crow - the 1994 movie, the soundtrack, the sequels, and of course, the comics. On the night before Halloween and the eve if their wedding, rock musician Eric Draven (Brandon Lee) and his fiancée are brutally murdered. As Eric's restless soul is escorted to the netherworld, a merciful crow brings his spirit back to settle the unfinished business on earth. Eric Draven's reanimated body shall rise from its cold grave, as a supernatural avenging spectre, with permission to have his rightful retribution, exactly a year later, on Halloween Eve.
In 1994 The Crow unfurled its celluloid wings and took flight in the imaginations of teenage Goths everywhere. 25 years later, does it still hold up? For the people who love the remarkable comic and are still ride or die for the soundtrack, the answer is a resounding yes. But the film has not aged well. In this episode we cover James O’Barr’s personal story, we spend a lot of time talking dark 90s music, and we even have a brief visit from unofficial third co-host Monique to cover women and vengeance. Also, if this episode were an album, the B-side would be our somewhat long discussion of John Wick. Afterall, The Crow is basically John Wick with Juggalo makeup and a goth soundtrack.
Welcome to Devil's Night! On Geek Pants Camcast Episode 53, Ken and Chris celebrate the 25th anniversary of Alex Proyas' gothic 1994 classic, THE CROW. All that plus Brandon Lee's legacy, how quotable the film is, James O'Barr's original graphic novel, movie posters and trailers being better in the '90s, and more! *********************** Check out James "thegentlemanbronco" Livitski's artwork here: https://www.instagram.com/thegentlemanbronco/ Logos designed by Snollygoster Productions www.youtube.com/channel/UC0DAPhLhiB7pRPlni277pzA Opening credits music by Ross Bugden www.youtube.com/channel/UCQKGLOK2FqmVgVwYferltKQ A HUGE thank you to David Hayter for lending his voice! ** Podcast originally released on the Geek Pants YouTube channel as a Camcast on October 30th, 2019 -- https://youtu.be/S4tCXgNJ45I

Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. It’s the 25th anniversary of THE CROW (1994), the film adaption of the independent comic book by James O’Barr. First published in 1989, the story became a cult success resulting in a franchise that still lives today. The movie was perfect for the era. Grunge music, goth and emo apparel, and a general alternative to the norm was spreading throughout. Up-and-comer Brandon Lee, the son of the famed actor Bruce Lee, was cast in the lead role of the film. What turned out was a brilliant if tragic casting. On Devil’s Night (October 30th) in the city of Detroit, up-and-coming rock musician Eric Draven and his fiancé are having a quiet evening in their loft. Their peaceful harmony is soon disrupted by a group of gangsters who are trying to evict everyone from the block. When things go bad, Eric lands up dead and his fiancé is mortally wounded after a vicious attack. Soon after, something brings him back to life to carry out justice for the crime. Brandon Lee, at the time, was beginning to get notice from Hollywood producers. With his casting as Eric Draven, he was about to become a leading man. His performance in THE CROW lets all see why he was a rising star. Unfortunately during a freak accident, he passed away during the shoot. As a result, the movie gained additional notoriety. Dark Discussions talks about the film, its legacy, and how it stands up twenty-five years later. As always we welcome your comments: darkdiscussions@aol.com (written email or attached mp3 files) WWW.DARKDISCUSSIONS.COM

You’ll meet a kindred spirit in our guest, “Mr. Jay,” who sets us off on a discussion centered around life-changing movie trailers. Plus, Dave dishes on the time he met CROW creator James O’Barr. We forego a formal King Corner (in favor of a larger one next time), but Palmer does give a recommendation as to what order in which to read his favorite Stephen King Series: The Dark Tower. Listen to Part 1: http://soundcloud.com/givingthemic/ep-13-the-crow-w-jemiah-jon A rough b-side accompaniment to our last episode on the Crow, this was our _first_ attempt at recording a Crow ep, but it went quickly off the rails in amusing ways. At long last, our Crow episode is out! Jemiah Jefferson(http://jemiah.com) returns along with Portland artist Jon Ascher(http://jonascher.com) to discuss the phenomenon that was James O'Barr's "the Crow:" the comic, the film, the soundtrack. We also talk about Frank Miller, Watchmen, and that time in everybody's lives where the only thing to do is to drink Thunderbird and binge on Bruce Lee films. This was actually the 2nd attempt at our discussion, recorded back in Early November 2016, as our original recording happened in September and kinda got sidetracked a LOT before we ran out of time. · Listen to Part 2: http://soundcloud.com/givingthemic/ep14-b-side-to-our-crow-episode-with-jemiah-jon · -- Show Notes -- · Jiz & the Mammograms https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLBYc-Zixeapn1LnjjoRuWd7B1wy8PCId4 · The story behind the Skull Cowboy, cut from the film: http://io9.gizmodo.com/who-was-the-skull-cowboy-the-mysterious-character-cut-1356239694 · The timecode to see James O'Barr's cameo is about 33:00 in · Check out Jemiah's work: https://www.amazon.com/Jemiah-Jefferson/e/B001KIG19U · Check out Jon's graphic novel _Neil: An Existential Crisis_ from Crackling Imp Press: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0615483380 · We're on Facebook now! www.facebook.com/givingthemic · Twitter: www.twitter.com/givingthemic · Comments/Questions: Givingthemic@gmail.com · Main theme by The Mysterious Breakfast'r Cereal on SoundCloud @chiptheme · All items trademarked and copyright their respective owners. Pour ce huitième épisode, un corbeau vient ramener à vous l'âme d'un bon comics pour combattre tous les mauvais que vous avez lu.
Brandon takes a look back at the 1994 cult classic THE CROW as well as James O'Barr's comic. Released in May of 1994, THE CROW opened at Number 1 at the US box office and its soundtrack topped the American music charts. It marked the Directorial Debut of Alex Proyas and of course was the final Film for rising Star Brandon Lee who had passed away in a tragic on-set accident. O'Barr's comic would go on to become one of the best-selling independent comics of all time. Needless to say, there's a lot to unpack with this one. So let's get into it.
We review The Crow by James O'Barr. We get some really great suggestions from Ivan on Valiant Comics! We talk about the Fathom event Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders! Holly new episode!!!!
No llueve eternamente.

Yes, ‘tis I – Marc Hershon – your host and former-prizefighter-now-casino-greeter for Epi140 of Succotash, the Comedy Soundcast Soundcast. And, as you heard in the opening introduction by our esteemed booth announcer Bill Heywatt, our carpet now match the drapes. That is to say, we’ve got “soundcast” replacing the outmoded “podcast” just about everywhere we can. Special thanks to our engineer/producer Joe Paulino for making that happen. LA PODFEST As I drop this ‘sode, I’m heading to the 5th Annual Los Angeles Podcast Festival! Exciting, indeed. I shall be in attendance all three days, more or less. Holding down space in the Podcast Lab to interview just as many folks as I can. And I will be moderating the panel on Journalism and Podcast on Sunday, Supetember 26th, at 2 PM. We’ve got Phoebe Judge and Lauren Spohrer, the host and producer of the Criminal soundcast and Jefferson Graham from USA Today. Should be a lively discussion. Which you can listen in on! They’re going to be livestreaming the Podfest this year at http://LAPodfest.com and I can get you a special deal. That’s right. They want $25 from you BUT they’ve given me a discount code to give to Succotash listeners. So click on the link and enter HUFFINGTON as your code and they’re knock five bucks off the price. PLUS they’ll kick us a little chunk just because you used our code to get there! Here’s a link that takes you right in - https://podfest2016.eventbrite.com/?discount=HUFFINGTON CLIPS This is an installment of Succotash Clips and we have a whole rack of snippets for you. Some I picked, some were harvested by our associate producer Tyson Saner and at least one was uploaded directly from the soundcasters themselves. We’ll be hearing from The Answering Machine Podcast, the Big Question Podcast, Cave Crew Radio, Changes In Latitude, Dark Odyssey, Droids Canada, Ear Goggles, Improv Nerd, My Favorite Murder, No Such Thing As A Fish and The Unwritable Rant. OTHER STUFF We’ve also got a double dose of our Burst O’ Durst, courtesy of our friend, political comic, and social commentator Will Durst. In celebration of Fall, there’s a song from our friend Abner Serd all about apples. THE CLIPS Improv NerdI decided to do some double duty this episode and clips the same shows that I reviewed this past week for Splitsider.com and the Huffington Post. First up is Improv Nerd with Jimmy Carrane, a great improvisor and teacher from the Chicago area. He interviews some tremendous improv talent on his podcast and just this last week he dropped an episode interviewing always funny and jst slightly off TJ Miller. In this snippet he talks about creating his character of Erlich Backman on the HBO series, Silicon Valley. Cave Crew RadioWe get a lot of Twitter retweet love from Choo Choo Stu from Cave Creek Radio, the internet radio show and soundcast, so high time we sliced off a hunk, thanks to Tyson. In addition to Stu from London, there’s Sir Big B, outta New York, and Mr. Wednesday Night from Ontario, Canada. The clip we have is from Cave Crew Radio’s highest rated episode on iTunes, Epi6, entitled “Smells like Urine Sushi”, and it’s a section when the hosts and guest on the show chat with the woman who inspired the meme “McScuse Me”. Ear GogglesLast episode I mentioned in the Tweetsack segment that I got a an upload from the gang at the defunct Ear Goggles soundcast. Well, guess what? They are defunct no longer — Jeremy Grater, Aaron Ristrow, and Stacy Black are back! Jeremy said they just couldn’t stay away and are recording 12 weeks of episodes, then they’ll take a break, do another 12 in the Spring, and so forth. The clip they sent us was from a special drop they did this summer to announce their return. My Favorite MurderFor Splitsider.com’s This Week In Comedy Podcasts column I recently reviewed the soundcast which is at the top of the iTunes Comedy chart: My Favorite Murder, with comedians Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark. If you like your murder flashbacks delivered with a healthy dose of humor and a side of squeamishness, you have coem to the right place. The hosts do their homework and delve into cases that are sometimes fairly recent and sometimes back in the dusty archives. Most recently they looked at the unfortunately murder of a college law student named Jane Mixer and her death at the hands of supposedly a serial killer who was dubbed the Co-Ed Killer. Turns out that, years later, DNA pointed the musty finger of justice at another joker who was incarcerated for the crime. Here’s a sample of Karen and Georgia’s witty back-and-forth… Changes In Latitudes: A Transgender ExperienceEver since Succotash began about five and half years ago, one of our staunchest supporters and loyal listeners has been Charley Miller, who said he was partly inspired to start his Random Variety Show soundcast. A lot has changed in five years. Charley now goes by the name Charley Sabrina Miller and describes herself as a 40-something transgenderqueer fem-person, and hosts a soundcast called Changes in Latitude: A Transgender Experience. It’s Charley’s stream-of-consciousness journey that she takes us on through life, self-discovery, relationships and beyond. Doctor Who Dark OdysseyI have to confess to being a little mixed up about a clip I played in the last Succotash Clips show. It was from a show called Doctor Who Dark Journey. THAT was actually a serious take or homage to Doctor Who — sort of audio fan fiction, I think. The same folks responsible for that also put out their own spoof called Doctor Who Dark Odyssey, which stars Atweh Atweh, Paul Thomas Manz, Jason Gray, Merrin Lalonde and which is – according to the email I got with their direct upload to us — “Dark Odyssey is a take on Doctor Who as if it were produced for audio in America with basically everything wrong about it! Our American Doctor shoots, swears and shags!” So what we have is a clip from a parody of a ripoff of Doctor Who. I think. Still confused. No Such Thing As A FishThere’s a very popular BBC TV panel show in Britain called QI, which stands for Quite Interesting, hosted by Alan Davies and Stephen Fry, in which the point is to just be interesting. And entertaining. Interesting and entertaining. Now the researchers for the show — because it’s got loads of trivia in it — are four folks called the “QI Elves” because they look everything up — have gone and started a soundcast called No Such Thing As A Fish. Simple format – each of the elves, who as named Dan, James, Anna, and Andy, take turns kicking off a segment with a favorite fact for the week. The others then chime in with facts and tidbits related to that fact. The episode that I reviewed for Splitsider.com features them talking about something called “train jam”. Answering Machine PodcastTyson found us a really interesting soundcast I hadn’t heard before. It’s called the Answering Machine Podcast, and its tells a story all based on a series of answering machine messages left for a woman named Lila Rose. Created by Sara Polton, who voices Lila, there’s a big cast of people who leave the messages. The Unwritable RantThe last of my review podcasts from last week was featured in Huffington Post Entertainment. It’s The Unwritable Rant from Juliette Miranda, who is a writer and an essayist — kinda the same thing, right? — and she’s clearly a monologist as well. We’ve certainly had some terrific shows from dudes who can riff all by themselves, like Bill Burr and Greg Proops. But there haven’t been a lot of soundcasts like that from women. So give a listen to Juliette… Droids CanadaThe gang from a show called Droids Canada got a clip to us through our direct upload link, at http://hightail.com/u/Succotash. About the show they say, “Based out of the Niagara Region in Canada this geeky pop culture show features blunt, comedic and outrageous behavior that occurs on every episode! Hosts Mr. J, AJ (and other rotating hosts Gabbypool, Dr. Stevil, DanMo and DJ Johnny Rock) cover current hot TV shows, comic book movie reviews, fan made things, interviews and any geek other related topic they can get their hands on.” This clip features guest James O’Barr, creator of The Crow. Big QuestionAre you happy? That’s the Big Question that gets kicked around in Epi49 of the English soundcast Big Question. Hosts are Pete, Maria, Gary, Kay and Rocchi, plus they often have guests. Tyson, who snipped this clip, didn’t tell me if there were guests so I guess that’s MY big question. Let’s just listen… SOUNDCAST OR DIE To celebrate the kickoff of our grassroots campaign to change the term “podcast” to “soundcast” in as many places as we can, feel free to drop by the Succotashery via our homesite, http://SuccotashShow.com, and pick up some merch emblazoned with our name, Succotash, and the magic words, “The Comedy Soundcast Soundcast” directly beneath it. It’s on shirts, hats, coffee mugs and more. That's all for now - how to see you at the LA Podfest this weekend or at least know that you're out there listening! — Marc Hershon
