The Legend of Korra: Season 1

Send us a textRepublic City stands at a crossroads. Seventy years after Avatar Aang ended the Hundred Year War, his successor Korra finds herself facing a threat unlike anything the world has seen before – a charismatic revolutionary who can permanently strip people of their bending abilities. This debut season of Legend of Korra brilliantly expands the Avatar universe through stunning animation, complex characters, and surprisingly mature themes. While many fans approach Korra with comparisons to The Last Airbender, we explore why this series deserves appreciation on its own merits. The show's gorgeous art-deco inspired visuals and fluid bending choreography represent a significant evolution in animation quality, creating fight scenes that remain breathtaking more than a decade after they first aired. What sets Legend of Korra apart is its willingness to let its protagonist fail repeatedly. Unlike Aang, who gradually mastered elements throughout his journey, Korra begins proficient in three elements but struggles with the spiritual side of being the Avatar. Her journey isn't about gaining power but understanding its purpose. When Amon successfully strips Korra of her bending abilities, the show makes a bold statement about vulnerability and resilience that resonates far beyond its target audience. The Equalist movement raises uncomfortable questions about privilege in the Avatar world. Are non-benders truly equal in a society where bending brings immense advantages? Amon's methods are extreme, but his movement's grievances aren't entirely unfounded. This moral complexity elevates the storytelling beyond simple hero-villain dynamics into something more thought-provoking.Whether you're revisiting Republic City or considering your first journey into Korra's world, this season offers a compelling, self-contained story while setting up threads that will evolve throughout the series. Listen as we break down why Legend of Korra deserves recognition as one of animation's most ambitious achievements – a show that respected its audience enough to tackle complex themes while delivering spectacular entertainment.Twitter handles:Project Geekology: https://twitter.com/pgeekologyAnthony's Twitter: https://twitter.com/odysseyswowDakota's Twitter: https://twitter.com/geekritique_dakInstagram:https://instagram.com/projectgeekology?igshid=1v0sits7ipq9yYouTube:https://www.youtube.com/@projectgeekologyGeekritique (Dakota):https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCBwciIqOoHwIx_uXtYTSEbATwitch (Anthony):https://www.twitch.tv/odysseywowSupport the show

We here at Tales From Aztlantis would like to issue the following public service announcement: PLEASE DO NOT rely on social media posts as your sole source of historical and archaeological information. This should not be a controversial statement. Yet every day, social media feeds are inundated with well-meaning individuals uncritically sharing and reposting pseudohistory without bothering to check the sources or seek outside information.Tik Tok, in particular is easily the worst offender when it comes to the spread of pseudohistory, pseudoarcheology, and general conspiracism. The speed with which a short video containing absolute nonsense can be created and shared on Tik Tok is truly impressive. And thanks to its algorithm, those who consume such disinformation are repeatedly inundated with more and more nonsense, creating a never-ending loop of paranoid conspiracism and pseudo historical group-think. One such outlandish claim that frequently pops up on pseudohistory-promoting social media sites is our topic for this episode: the battle of Cagayan. For those unfamiliar with the general narrative, it usually goes like this: “In 1582, a small, battle-hardened group consisting of 40 Tlaxkaltekah and Spanish soldiers defeated a thousand Japanese Samurai at the Battle of Cagayan in the Phillipines.” At face value this story sounds super badass. But is this actually what happened? Did a small band of spunky Tlaxkaltekah and Spanish soldiers really vanquish a THOUSAND Japanese Samurai in a Thermopylae-style beat down in the Phillipines? Let's find out! Your hosts: Kurly Tlapoyawa is an  archaeologist, ethnohistorian, and filmmaker. One day the wrestling coach approached him to join the team. “I had no friends and wasn't doing anything at that time,” he says. “So I'm like I might as well give it a try, I have nothing to lose.”Harold immediately felt a sense of purpose on the wrestling mat. “It gave me that sense of camaraderie,” he explains. “That sense of being a part of something that's bigger than yourself.”Through Beat the Streets and the sport of wrestling, Harold met many mentors who pushed him to better himself on and off the mat. “I met people who would later form my support system and people who are still in my support system.”When he got the chance to join a travel team, he jumped at the opportunity. Even though he took some tough losses, Harold brimmed with enthusiasm for the sport. “Take me anywhere I'll do any day, I'll wrestle with anyone, I don't care. I just want to go and experience stuff.”Wrestling taught Harold many valuable lessons over the years that he still carries with him today. As someone with a deep sense of serving others, Harold saw it as a vehicle to help others. “It takes a very intentional mindset to understand that you have a responsibility to those around you,” Harold explains. “Whether that be helping someone who's struggling with conditioning by doing an extra lap with them or making sure you're paying attention to your teammates while they're wrestling. If you see someone down sitting on the bench maybe just going by and saying ‘Hey, what's up? Is everything, okay?'”Nowadays, Harold continues to serve and be involved with the Beat the Streets community by helping organize the Youth Ambassadors Program, which is aimed to give a voice to the younger BTS graduates within the organization. “I think there is a very strong case to be made for child empowerment and child advocacy. And knowing that children have things to say, that they know what they're talking about. When you're dealing with a specific group of people, whether that be kids, whether that be a marginalized group, you can't do anything sustainably without using their actual voices.”“And I think one of the big things that I want to accomplish with this group is giving the student athletes and their families more of a voice, more empowerment to actively be a part of changing the trajectory.”Harold is continuing his track record of service in his career choice as well. He landed his dream opportunity with Viacom in their social responsibility department. And he is doing an internship with Nickelodeon Animation's Community Efforts Department.“I'm at a dream place, the kid me would have never thought I was working at. If you went to that kid who showed up to Belmont that day, and told him all these things happening, he would honestly probably run away. Or be like, ‘Nah, get out of here.'”

He has designed characters for Disney Television Animation, Sony Feature Animation and Nickelodeon Animation, designing the style of the shows such as "Kim Possible," "Danny Phantom," Kevin Smith's "Clerks" the animated series, and many more. Full shownotes: http://yourcreativepush.com/stephensilver In this episode, Stephen discusses: -How he was never a good student growing up, but always knew that art was his path. -At the end of the day, a degree doesn’t matter -- all that matters is how well you can draw. -The experience of meeting Mort Drucker from Mad Magazine and how that affected his art career. -The importance of self-discipline, self-motivation, and always asking questions. -The power that can come from being brave and stepping out of your comfort zone. -Advice that his father gave him to realize that receiving an answer of “no” is not a life and death situation. -The power of asking, and not asking your friends and family, but asking the opinion of professionals (and then listening to what they have to say). -How “failure” is a dangerous and misused word. -How and why he started teaching and then eventually the Silver Drawing Academy. -How you have to follow through with the thing that keeps popping in your head. -How people who are dying typically regret the things that they weren't brave enough to try. -His YouTube channel and "Art Talk" video series. Stephen's Final Push will inspire you to dig to find the thing that you really love, and to not be afraid to fail!   Quotes: “I was always showing my stuff around.  I always had a confidence.  Even though I was horrible in my artwork I was always prepared to show people and take criticism.” “When you realize that’s the worst is anyone will ever say to you is ‘No,’ then you can start to relax a bit.” “All you can ever do is ask.  Through asking, things happen.  If you don’t ask, nothing can happen.” “Stop showing your parents your artwork.” “Don’t rely on your friends opinions.  They’re your friends.  They’re going to tell you you’re artwork is awesome and how great you are.” “Every time you try, you get one step closer.” Links mentioned: The Top 5 Regrets of the Dying [via Collective Evolution] Stephen's Classes Connect with Stephen: Website / YouTube / Facebook / Instagram / Twitter / LinkedIn
