Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing. (James 1:2–4 NLT) On your list of things to be thankful for this season, trials may not be in your top ten. Or top one hundred. But God's Word makes it clear that suffering and adversity are essential for our spiritual growth. And they are evidence of God's work in our lives. Adversity keeps us humble. Prosperity and success tend to make people proud and self-sufficient. They don't pray with the same intensity when their needs are met. Adversity teaches us eternal truths we would otherwise not learn. For example, it's human nature to try to avoid pain at all costs. But pain reminds us of a deeper need. Just as hunger pangs remind us that it's time to eat, adversity can remind us that it's time to make an important change in our lives. Adversity gives us a deeper compassion for others in pain. It's been said, “If you preach to people who are hurting, you will never lack for an audience.” It's also been said, “Success builds walls; failure builds bridges.” If you say, “Look at how great my life is! I don't have any problems! Follow me on Instagram! Everything's perfect!” who can connect with that? But if you talk about your failures, difficulties, and challenges, now you're speaking the language of real people who live in the real world. Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians 1:4–5, “He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us. For the more we suffer for Christ, the more God will shower us with his comfort through Christ” (NLT). If I could change history, I would choose not to endure the loss of my son. I would bring him back in a heartbeat. But I can say this: God has given me, my wife, and our son a ministry we did not ask for, but a ministry we embrace. It's a ministry of helping others who've lost loved ones. I don't want to waste my pain. If I can offer a word of encouragement or hope to someone who's gone through the worst tragedy imaginable, I'll seize the opportunity. I'll tell them that God will be with them through the pain and grief. And I'll thank God for the ministry opportunity. It's easy to give thanks when your health is good, the lights are green, the sky is blue, and the bills are paid. It's not as easy to give thanks when problems mount. But we must. Psalm 106:1 says, “Praise the Lord! Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good! His faithful love endures forever!” (NLT). If God ceases to be good, we no longer need to give thanks. Inside the city, however, was a strong tower, to which all the men and women— all the people of the city — had fled. They had locked themselves in and climbed up on the tower roof. Abimelek went to the tower and attacked it. But as he approached the entrance to the tower to set it on fire, a woman dropped an upper millstone on his head and cracked his skull. Hurriedly he called to his armor-bearer, "Draw your sword and kill me, so that they can't say, 'A woman killed him.'" So his servant ran him through, and he died.
I Choose Pt. 2 | April 14, 2024Pastor Wes Morris Joshua 6:1-11 (NIV) The gates of Jericho were tightly shut because the people were afraid of the Israelites. No one was allowed to go out or in. But the Lord said to Joshua, “I have given you Jericho, its king, and all its strong warriors. You and your fighting men should march around the town once a day for six days. Seven priests will walk ahead of the Ark, each carrying a ram's horn. On the seventh day you are to march around the town seven times, with the priests blowing the horns. When you hear the priests give one long blast on the rams' horns, have all the people shout as loud as they can. Then the walls of the town will collapse, and the people can charge straight into the town.” After Joshua spoke to the people, the seven priests with the rams' horns started marching in the presence of the Lord, blowing the horns as they marched. And the Ark of the Lord's Covenant followed behind them. Some of the armed men marched in front of the priests with the horns and some behind the Ark, with the priests continually blowing the horns. “Do not shout; do not even talk,” Joshua commanded. “Not a single word from any of you until I tell you to shout. Then shout!” So the Ark of the Lord was carried around the town once that day, and then everyone returned to spend the night in the camp. ✓ We live paralyzed by fear. ✓ We worry about what people will say. The more isolated and disconnected we are, the more shattered and distorted our self-identity. We are not healthy when we are alone. You want what you don't have, so you scheme and kill to get it. You are jealous of what others have, but you can't get it, so you fight and wage war to take it away from them. THERE IS A GLIMPSE OF HEAVEN IN OUR LIFE-GIVING RELATIONSHIPS And there the Lord has pronounced his blessing, even life everlasting. Psalms 133:3 NLT On the night when he was betrayed, the Lord Jesus took some bread and gave thanks to God for it. Then he broke it in pieces and said, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way, he took the cup of wine after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant between God and his people—an agreement confirmed with my blood. Do this in remembrance of me as often as you drink it.” For every time you eat this bread and drink this cup, you are announcing the Lord's death until he comes again. 1 Corinthians 11:24-26 NLT So let each individual first evaluate his own attitude and only then eat the bread and drink the cup. For continually eating and drinking with a wrong spirit will bring judgment upon yourself by not recognizing the body. This insensitivity is why many of you are weak, chronically ill, and some even dying. 1 Corinthians 11:28-30 TPT

So the question for us today: How can I know if I'm a Judas or a Peter?We'll get to that. But first let's get to the text. There are some really cool nuggets on the way to answering our personal question for the day.Mark 14:12 (NLT) On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover lamb is sacrificed, Jesus' disciples asked him, “Where do you want us to go to prepare the Passover meal for you?”We talked about this meal last week…They had no clue that Jesus was going to redefine history with this mealThey had no idea we would be talking about this moment 2000 years later!Mark 14:13-16 (NLT) So Jesus sent two of them into Jerusalem with these instructions: “As you go into the city, a man carrying a pitcher of water will meet you. Follow him. At the house he enters, say to the owner, ‘The Teacher asks: Where is the guest room where I can eat the Passover meal with my disciples?' He will take you upstairs to a large room that is already set up. That is where you should prepare our meal.” So the two disciples went into the city and found everything just as Jesus had said, and they prepared the Passover meal there.Strange instructions. Sounds like a CIA mission. Notice the simple obedience.(Pillar New Testament Commentary) A male water carrier would have caught their eye, for carrying water was normally the labor of women or slaves.Nugget: (Pillar New Testament Commentary) The hall so described resembles the meeting place of the early church described in Acts 1:13 (Upper Room) and 12:12 (after Peter's prison escape, “...he went to the home of Mary, the mother of John Mark, where many were gathered for prayer.”). If it is the same dwelling, then it belonged to Mary, the mother of John Mark, the probable author of the Second Gospel. The suggestion that John Mark was the carrier of the water jar is possible, but without evidence.Now I want to jump down to v22, the meal itself. We'll come back to v17-21 at the end. But while we're talking about the Passover meal, we need to connect some dots here. Four cups of wine were traditionally consumed during the Passover meal, each with a specific significance. The cups represented different aspects of the Exodus story and God's promises. The four cups are typically labeled as follows:1. Cup of Sanctification (Kiddush Cup): This is the first cup, and it is associated with the sanctification of the holiday.

(Matthew 28:19 NLT) Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. (Acts 2:4 NLT) And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages, as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability. (Acts 2:5-6 NLT) At that time there were devout Jews from every nation living in Jerusalem. (6) When they heard the loud noise, everyone came running, and they were bewildered to hear their own languages being spoken by the believers. (Acts 2:37 NIV) When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” 3.Be Genuine in Your Faith 4.Pray and Ask the Holy Spirit to Help 5.Invite, invite, invite!

This time the water was up to my knees. After another 1,750 feet, it was up to my waist. (Luke 19:1-2 NLT) Jesus entered Jericho and made his way through the town. (2) There was a man there named Zacchaeus. He was the chief tax collector in the region, and he had become very rich. (Luke 19:3-4 NLT) He tried to get a look at Jesus, but he was too short to see over the crowd. (4) So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree beside the road, for Jesus was going to pass that way. (Luke 19:5-7 NLT) When Jesus came by, he looked up at Zacchaeus and called him by name. “Zacchaeus!” he said. “Quick, come down! I must be a guest in your home today.” (6) Zacchaeus quickly climbed down and took Jesus to his house in great excitement and joy. (7) But the people were displeased. “He has gone to be the guest of a notorious sinner,” they grumbled. (10) For the Son of Man came to seek and save those who are lost.” (Galatians 5:19-23 NLT) When you follow the desires of your sinful nature, the results are very clear: sexual immorality, impurity, lustful pleasures, (20) idolatry, sorcery, hostility, quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissension, division, (21) envy, drunkenness, wild parties, and other sins like these. Let me tell you again, as I have before, that anyone living that sort of life will not inherit the Kingdom of God. (22) But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, (23) gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things! (John 7:37-39 NLT) On the last day, the climax of the festival, Jesus stood and shouted to the crowds, “Anyone who is thirsty may come to me! (38) Anyone who believes in me may come and drink! For the Scriptures declare, ‘Rivers of living water will flow from his heart.'” (39) (When he said “living water,” he was speaking of the Spirit, who would be given to everyone believing in him. God Answers. Are We Listening? Today's readings are I Kings 17 – 19 and Colossians 2. We are reading from the New Living Translation. Our God answers. Are we listening? The contest was to see which God would answer with fire. We see the results. It was our God that answered with fire. Baal, and all the gods of this world, don't answer. All the rattle and hum, fits and fury, can't conjure up the answers we need and long for – the answers our soul demands, for hope, life, and victory. The victory we need in this life is found only in our God. In and of myself, I don't have an answer for the spiritual drought that exists in my soul or the evil of this world. Paul says, For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places. (Eph 6:12 NLT) On top of Mount Carmel today, there is a monastery of the Carmelite order. They adhere to a vow of silence. There, on top of Mount Carmel, are monks who are silent. They're silent because they recognize the truth that they don't have the answer, and neither do we. God has the answer. He is the God who answers. Our God answers but are we listening? Sometimes he answers with fire and sometimes it's through a gentle whisper. But we've got to be listening. Sometimes we have to see through the storm and the fire and the earthquake. We have to keep listening and looking, until we hear his whisper. It's there that we are assured that He is God and we are not. The victory that we need in this life can only be found in Him. It's not going to be found in our own strength. That's good news for us. That means that the pressure's off. Ours is to rest, and eat, and follow. We don't have the strength but he does. We don't have an answer, but he does. Are you listening to the answer he has for you? Listen, because he is the God who answers.

For example, we don't know what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words.” -Romans 8:26 NLT “Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Acts 2:5-8 (NLT) At that time there were devout Jews from every nation living in Jerusalem. 6 When they heard the loud noise, everyone came running, and they were bewildered to hear their own languages being spoken by the believers. 7 They were completely amazed. “How can this be?” they exclaimed. “These people are all from Galilee, 8 and yet we hear them speaking in our own native languages! When the holy spirit lives in you, people notice. Joel 2:28-31 (NLT) “Then, after doing all those things, I will pour out my Spirit upon all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy. And we all hear these people speaking in our own languages about the wonderful things God has done!” The Holy Spirit always points to Jesus. It's time to stop leading your life and start relying on the Holy Spirit.

But after I have been raised from the dead, I will go ahead of you to Galilee and meet you there.” Peter declared, “Even if everyone else deserts you, I will never desert you.” Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, Peter—this very night, before the rooster crows, you will deny three times that you even know me.” “No!” Peter insisted. “Even if I have to die with you, I will never deny you!” And all the other disciples vowed the same. Luke 22:54-62 (NLT) So they arrested him [Jesus] and led him to the high priest's home. And Peter followed at a distance. The guards lit a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat around it, and Peter joined them there. A servant girl noticed him in the firelight and began staring at him. I'm going to shake the shame by: 1. Removing its POWER, and GIVING it to God. Romans 8:1-2 (NLT) So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus. And because you belong to him, the power of the life-giving Spirit has freed you from the power of sin that leads to death. 2. Hiding in the RIGHT PLACE. Psalm 32:7 For you are my hiding place; you protect me from trouble. You surround me with songs of victory. 3. Accepting my FREEDOM in Christ. 1 John 1:9 But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from ALL wickedness. John 21:4-7 At dawn Jesus was standing on the beach, but the disciples couldn't see who he was. He called out, “Fellows have you caught any fish?” “No,” they replied. Then he said, “Throw out your net on the right-hand side of the boat, and you'll get some!” So they did, and they couldn't haul in the net because there were so many fish in it. Then the disciple Jesus loved said to Peter, “It's the Lord!” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his tunic (for he had stripped for work), jumped into the water, and headed to shore.

Don't wait until I get there and then try to collect it all at once.Mark's Tithing StoryDue to poor decisions I had made, I had been at a point in my life where I did not have any extra money, and at times had to decide which bill I was going to pay and which one could maybe slip a little. I was using credit cards to pay bills, creating a wheel that kept on spinning into frustration and despair financially. I was a financial mess (which affected other areas of my life as well).I was giving to church, but not tithing. I gave a little each time I went, but it was out of what I had leftover, after making decisions on what to pay. It was never very much.The church I was attending began a challenge. The challenge was to tithe (yes, a full 10% of a person's income) for 90 days. Their challenge was that if a person's life did not change for the better within that 90 days, the church would give that money back.The numbers regarding my income and bills did not support doing this. I did not have enough money coming in to pay my bills. How could I possibly give away 10% on top of that. However, after thinking about it a lot, and praying for guidance (admittedly, my faith was not very strong then), I decided to give it a try. I had no intention of asking for my money back after the 90 days if things did not show improvement, but that option was there.I made it through the 90 days of tithing and made all of my financial obligations. I made changes in spending. I was able to earn a little more at work through assignments. My attitude changed, this time for the better. That was a turning point in my life…Now, my tithe to church (based upon my gross income, not my net income) is typically the first “payment” I make each month. Anything else I give is above and beyond the tithe. And I am blessed beyond measure….We are debt free again, and it is a freedom unlike any other. It opens so many doors and opportunities to give. God blesses the giver. My blessings have come in so many ways; from getting a grasp on anxiety, depression, anger, and PTSD issues to simply becoming more aware of the everyday sightings and hearings from God.

David’s poetic words paint a picture of a faithful Father always watching, always protecting, always lighting our path, when we find ourselves in dark places, even at times, by our own hand. Have you ever been in such a dark place that you felt you needed to hide from God? Be encouraged again by these words: If I ride the wings of the morning, if I dwell by the farthest oceans, even there your hand will guide me, and your strength will support me. … even in darkness I cannot hide from you. To you the night shines as bright as day. (Psalm 139:9-12 NLT) On your best days, God is there. On your worst days, He is there. Even in the darkness, even when the light is hard for you to see, His hand is there to guide you. His strength is available to support you. He can overcome any darkness. All you have to do is just call on Him. Let’s pray: “Heavenly Father, thank You there is no darkness with You. You can shine Your light anywhere I am because of Your always-available presence. Today, I invite Your hand into my life. I receive Your light into my life. As above, so below. AMEN”
Today’s verse is a continuation from yesterday: And now, dear brothers and sisters, … Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. (Philippians 4:8 NLT) We all see and sense the growing negativity and pessimism in the world. Scripture has so many amazing challenges and charges to ground us and lead us toward thinking, acting, and speaking from the heart of God. Today’s verse provides us a list of positive and uplifting qualities to set our minds and thoughts toward. Listen to this beautiful inspiration once again: And now, dear brothers and sisters, … Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. (Philippians 4:8 NLT) On what or where have your thoughts been fixed lately? What is one area of focus that you can redirect your thinking towards today? True. Honorable. Right. Pure. Lovely. Admirable. Excellent. Worthy of praise. Simply speaking those words to feel their strength helps ease our minds and exudes God’s strength and peace. Let’s pray: “Heavenly Father, fix my thoughts on what is true, honorable, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent, and worthy of praise. You are all of these in their purest form and You alone are worthy of my praise. As above, so below” .
JUNE 15, God Answers. Are We Listening? Today's readings are I Kings 17 – 19 and Colossians 2. We are reading from the New Living Translation. Our God answers. Are we listening? The contest was to see which God would answer with fire. We see the results. It was our God that answered with fire. Baal, and all the gods of this world, don't answer. All the rattle and hum, fits and fury, can't conjure up the answers we need and long for – the answers our soul demands, for hope, life, and victory. The victory we need in this life is found only in our God. In and of myself, I don't have an answer for the spiritual drought that exists in my soul or the evil of this world. Paul says, For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places. (Eph 6:12 NLT) On top of Mount Carmel today, there is a monastery of the Carmelite order. They adhere to a vow of silence. There, on top of Mount Carmel, are monks who are silent. They're silent because they recognize the truth that they don't have the answer, and neither do we. God has the answer. He is the God who answers. Our God answers but are we listening? Sometimes he answers with fire and sometimes it's through a gentle whisper. But we've got to be listening. Sometimes we have to see through the storm and the fire and the earthquake. We have to keep listening and looking, until we hear his whisper. It's there that we are assured that He is God and we are not. The victory that we need in this life can only be found in Him. It's not going to be found in our own strength. That's good news for us. That means that the pressure's off. Ours is to rest, eat his food, hear his voice, and follow him. We don't battle against flesh and blood enemies, but against spiritual enemies. We don't have the strength but he does. We don't have an answer, but he does. Are you listening to the answer he has for you? Listen, because he is the God who answers.

And we heard this verse about the New Jerusalem: Zec. 9:16 NLT On that day the LORD their God will rescue his people,just as a shepherd rescues his sheep.They will sparkle in his landlike jewels in a crown. ISAIAH 63:In chapter 62 we read promises like what I shared above about the Lord giving names: Is. 62:4 NLT Never again will you be called “The Forsaken City”or “The Desolate Land.”Your new name will be “The City of God’s Delight”and “The Bride of God,”for the LORD delights in youand will claim you as his bride. And similarly at the end of that chapter: Is. 62:11b NLT Look, your Savior is coming.See, he brings his reward with him as he comes.’”12 They will be called “The Holy People”and “The People Redeemed by the LORD.”And Jerusalem will be known as “The Desirable Place”and “The City No Longer Forsaken.” We will see the fulfillment of all this in the last chapters of Revelation. REVELATION 17:In chapter 16 we heard all 7 of the Bowl Judgments. At the time this judgment happens and the bowls are poured out on the earth, it seems that 100% of the people are opposed to God. No one repents when the judgments happen, but instead curse God. And there are preparations for a final battle of Armageddon with God. However God’s voice from the throne says that “It is finished.” This seems to refer to the punishment against Babylon. In John’s day, Babylon was a code word among Christians for the city of Rome— the capital city of the empire, which was built on 7 hills. In our day Babylon pictures the united evil world system supported by immoral commerce.

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. This is my gospel… 2 Timothy 2:8 (NIV) That Jesus LIVED, means little… That Jesus is ALIVE, means everything. The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as God raised Christ Jesus from the dead, he will give life to your mortal bodies by this same Spirit living within you. Romans 8:11 (NLT) Jesus didn't give His life to take you from bad to good… but from death to LIFE! REMEMBER MERCY Against you, and you alone, have I sinned; I have done what is evil in your sight. You will be proved right in what you say, and your judgment against me is just. Psalm 51:4 (NLT) Your darkest moment… couldn't overshadow He did for YOU. REMEMBER LOVE Love = living for the other person's good For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16 (NLT) It was not nails that held Him on that cross… it was His love for you. No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us. Romans 8:37-39 (NLT) And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God's love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God's love. Romans 8:37-39 (NLT) No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord. Then you will learn to know God's will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect” (Romans 12:2 NLT)On top of these difficult conversations, our kids are growing up in a world that increasingly values individual truth over God's truth; a world where everyone is encouraged to “live their truth.” But, the Bible tells the story of God's plan for his people; and as believers, we should use it to shape the way we see and interact with the world. That will often look different than other people around us. These changes in our world can make us feel really unprepared and afraid of the future. But, remember we serve a sovereign God who is always in control! He loves our kids even more than we do. We are not powerless as parents—we have the Holy Spirit in us. We can ask him to prompt our kids' hearts and we can commit to praying for them to treasure the Bible and find a true worldview and identity in Christ!This week, let's pray that our kids live out a biblical worldview. In other words, let's ask God to help them know the gospel, love the gospel, and that their lives would be completely changed by it!Dear God, help my child to hate sin and live a life of standing out and following you. Help them to find out what pleases you (Ephesians 5:10) and commit to following you wholeheartedly. Help them to love your word, hide your word in their heart, and let your word shape the way they live.
