Comic Book Couples Counseling Podcast

If you listen to comic book podcasts beyond Comic Book Couples Counseling, you've probably already encountered Aubrey Sitterson. The writer has been making the rounds, discussing his radical new science fiction series Free Planet, made in collaboration with artist Jed Dougherty, colorist Vittorio Astone, letterer Taylor Esposito, and designer Mark Kaufman. Sitterson LOVES comics, and he LOVES talking about comics. He's spent years percolating in the medium, absorbing the code of how to make the best comics in the best way possible for his particular talents. Aubrey Sitterson has developed something he calls "The Approach." It's a new method of storytelling discovered during the making of other such comics as The Worst Dudes, No One Left to Fight, and Savage Hearts. Sitterson is not just design-focused; he's design-obsessed, and it was a delight to chat with him about this intensely, carefully sharpened obsession. We're in the weeds this week. We wanted to double down on a comics-making meal, possibly inspired by the last episode's heavy process conversation with Rick Quinn and Dave Chisholm about Spectrum #4. Aubrey Sitterson appears reinvigorated by Free Planet, and his enthusiasm for the craft is infectious and should encourage your leap into storytelling. Final Order Cutoff for Free Planet #1 is Monday, April 14th (That's Today!), and Image Comics will finally drop the first issue in shops on May 7th. It's not a title you want to sleep on. Everyone involved is going for it, swinging for the fences. You can view the Preview Pages here, which are overwhelming in the best way possible. Follow Aubrey Sitterson on Bluesky, Instagram, Substack, and his Website. We're sponsored by 2000 AD, the greatest comic you're not reading! Within its pages is a whole universe of characters, from Judge Dredd and Strontium Dog to Rogue Trooper, Shakara, Halo Jones, and the poor sods slogging across the Cursed Earth in The Helltrekkers. Get a print subscription at your door every week - and the first issue is free! Or subscribe digitally, get free back issues, and download DRM-free copies of each issue for just $9 a month. That's 128 pages of incredible monthly comics for less than $10. Today Daily Devotional

God's grace was so powerfully at work in them all that there were no needy persons among them. — Acts 4:33-34 As people were gripped by the reality of new life in Jesus, something significant was happening among them: no one was left out. “There were no needy persons among them.” Can you imagine what that was like? Think about being on the receiving end. As hard as it can be to ask for help, I'm sure that people felt relief, knowing their needs would be supplied. And what about the people who were giving? The ability to help meet the needs of people without expectations must have been contagious. People literally sold their property to help meet the needs of others. Talk about being devoted to one another. In our Western culture today, we tend to struggle with this concept of social living. If we help someone out, will they take advantage and expect us to keep on giving? How will we be able to say no at some point? Or could it be that God's kingdom doesn't work that way? Maybe we are called to show God's heart by caring for and meeting each other's needs, and maybe in doing so we will reflect the light of Jesus. Imagine what would happen if we, the church, lived each day with this kind of generosity. I'm sure that people outside the church would take notice and become curious. Holy Spirit, make me sensitive to the needs of the people around me. Give me the courage not to wait until someone asks for help but to step in when you nudge me to do so. Amen.

As an acclaimed novelist, essayist and author of short stories, writer Sam Lipsyte knows what it's like to push the boundaries of form in the context of bold, irreverent and iconoclastic situations. In each of his literary masterpieces, he provides a glimpse into the humanity which surrounds the complex experiences which inform the foundation of their characters. He authored his debut publication, Venus Drive, in 2000, which consisted of a hilarious collection of short stories which demonstrate this thematic undertone in action. The Subject Steve followed in 2001; a poetic, existential, humorous satire examining topics which include life, disease and the meaning of it all. The novel provides a meditation on the irony of mortality through the lens of an eponymous protagonist after he receives a terminal diagnosis. “Home land,” which captures the taste of revisiting one's cherished high school experience and all its grateful memories, arrived in 2004. The Ask followed in 2010, and navigated one man's attempt to regain his old job back through participating in an ask which would change his life indefinitely. Throughout the years, up to and including the publication of his recent book, Hark (2019), Sam's writing has been featured in dozens of publications including GQ, The New Yorker, Harper's, The Washington Post and Playboy. He was an editor at FEED, and in talks with HBO to create a show around his work, “People City.” For nearly 20 years, he has taught fiction at Columbia University. His most recent book, No One Left to Come Looking for You, will be published on December 6, 2022 and can be pre-ordered on Amazon. In our conversation, we discussed the origins of his literary interests and talents; his father, the renowned Robert Lipsyte; and the musical underpinnings which formed the backdrop for his latest work.Opening Credits: The Wrong Sister - Looking at the sun; HoliznaCC0 - 2 (jazz); Closing Credits: El Jugador - A Couple Of Crumbs

Within three hours today, S&P 500 futures swung from a 3.9% decline to a 3.9% rally. “It's pretty incredible,” tweeted Jared Dillian shortly after noon, “to watch people get fooled by the market over and over again. It's not hard – when there's no one left to sell, they cover.” Weston Nakamura has a more global perspective on the reversal, noting that the U.K. and the pound as well as Japan and the yen still linger as potential crisis points. Jared raised an interesting point in today's edition of The Daily Dirtnap: that we're in “a bubble of bearish sentiment.” Weston and Jared join Maggie Lake to talk about the significance of today's price action. The violent reversal was surely concerning, hardly the sign of a healthy market. Jared, Weston, and Maggie unpack the reaction to the most recent U.S. inflation data and what it means for central bankers and global financial markets. Learn more about your ad choices.
