Dumping and dog fouling are two issues which, unfortunately, never seem to go away in Clare. It is the former problem we return to on today's Morning Focus. Kilkishen appears to be dealing with a serious level of illegal dumping, something which has been highlighted by a local public representative. Posting on social media recently, the Kilmurry-based Fianna Fáil Councillor Alan O'Callaghan said: “The level of dumping locally over the last few weeks has gone out of control.” To discuss this further, Alan Morrissey was joined by Fianna Fáil Councillor Alan O'Callaghan, Secretary and Treasurer of Kilkishen Development, Olivia King, and Laura Woods, a concerned resident. In this episode, Lou chat to Olivia King, a former professional athlete in swimming and rowing, as the guest. Olivia shares her journey from starting competitive swimming at a young age to transitioning to rowing and making the Canadian national team. She discusses her intense training regimen, including swimming 10k in a pool after a planned open water swim got canceled. Olivia provides insights into her training techniques, such as focusing on breathing, stroke rates, and using paddles for resistance training. Their conversation delves into the mental aspect of swimming, including thoughts during long swims and the importance of goal setting. KEY TAKEAWAYS Olivia found a balance between school and swimming by transitioning to a public high school to experience a more normal high school life while still focusing on swimming and maintaining good grades. Olivia emphasized the importance of race simulation in training, where she practiced her longest swim two weeks before the event to prepare for the actual race conditions and challenges. Olivia highlighted the significance of breathing technique in swimming, emphasizing the importance of breathing to the opposite side to maintain balance and efficiency in the water. Olivia discussed the use of paddles as a form of resistance training in swimming to improve arm strength and stroke efficiency, providing a way to enhance performance and technique. Olivia shared insights into her mental approach during swimming, mentioning how she engages in self-reflection, technique correction, and even sings songs in her head to stay focused and motivated during long swims. BEST MOMENTS "I was taken to a pool, had to try out. So like little eight year old Olivia with the cap and goggles on got into lane eight and this coach watched me swim up and down the pool." "I think that elite level of sport at such a young age was, it definitely had its benefits." "I was so against waterproof headphones, only because I think the beauty of sport in general, and I think the beauty of individual sports, especially like being able to go for a run, or go for a swim, or even just go for a hike." "I always teach the little kids this is you know when you go to blow into a tissue yeah blow your nose that's you breathe out under the water yeah so that when you go to turn your head to breathe all you have everything's out of you all you got to do is suck in." "Swimming really has been like the OG of Restricted breathing and working on your VO2 and your cardio that way." VALUABLE RESOURCES https://linktr.ee/theexerciseengineerlou@theexerciseengineer.com HOST BIO Lou's personal journey with body confidence and food struggles began at the age of 15, where overeating and guilt around food consumed her. Determined to regain control, Lou immersed herself in research, found joy in working out in her garden, and started tracking her nutrition and steps. Surprisingly, she lost a stone in less than three months and discovered a newfound love for fitness. Fueling her passion, Lou pursued personal training qualifications and launched her Instagram page in September 2020. After months of building a solid foundation, branding, and gaining relevant expertise, she started helping others achieve what once felt impossible—losing fat, feeling empowered, and loving the journey without restrictions. With numerous success stories, digital products, and a thriving membership program called Train with Lou, Lou now coaches, teaches, and learns about food, exercise, and mindset.

Research associate at the New Brunswick Museum, Olivia King and Matt Stimson, the museum's assistant curator of geology and paleontology spoke with the CBC's Danielle McCreadie about their extraordinary discovery of a fossilized tree previously unknown to humans.
Shark declines: finning regulations might have bitten off more than they can chew In recent years governments around the world have attempted to slow the catastrophic decline in shark numbers with regulations, including on the practice of shark finning. But a new study led by marine biologist Boris Worm and published in the journal Science suggests that these regulations have backfired and shark mortality is still rising. The reason is that shark fishers responded by keeping all of the shark, and developing ever more markets for shark meat and oils, such as in supplements, cosmetics, and even hidden as “whitefish” or “flake” in fish and chip markets. Dogs like TV about dogs but don't give a rat's about squirrels Like a lot of us, dogs spend a certain amount of time in front of the TV. But what are they watching and what do they like? Freya Mowat, a veterinary ophthalmologist from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, was interested in finding what dogs like to watch on TV so that she could develop new ways to test dog vision. Her study, recently published in the journal Applied Animal Behaviour Science, revealed that, unsurprisingly, dogs preferred to watch other dogs, and ten per cent also enjoyed watching cartoons as much as live action animals. The more unexpected finding was that the dogs were not as interested in watching humans, squirrels, or trucks. An ancient tree's crowning glory Paleontologists working in Norton, New Brunswick have made an extraordinary discovery: a fully intact 350 million year old fossilized tree unlike any previously known to science. Matt Stinson, the assistant curator of geology and paleontology at the New Brunswick Museum, says it's extremely rare in the fossil record to find a fully intact tree like this one that has its trunk, branches and leaves still attached. Olivia King, a research associate at the museum, described it as “odd and whimsical,” like the trees from Dr. Seuss's famous book The Lorax. Their study is in the journal Current Biology. There was an old elephant who swallowed an ant… The complex interdependence of plants and animals in an ecosystem are often hard to fathom until they go wrong. This is illustrated by a new study in Kenya showing how an invasive ant led to elephants knocking down trees, affecting how lions hunt zebras, which turned out to be bad news for buffalo. Adam Ford from the University of British Columbia, Okanagan is part of the team on this study published in Science. Understanding when (earlier), and how (cleverly), stone-age people lived in Europe New technology to study fragments of bone found in a cave in Germany is leading to a rewriting of the history of how Homo sapiens established themselves in Europe, when the continent was dominated by Neanderthals. A team, led by Jean-Jacques Hublin, at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, uncovered human bones dating back 46,000 years in a cave in Northern Germany, which means the Homo sapiens were living side by side much earlier with Neanderthals in a frigid ice-age climate instead of sticking to the tropics like previously believed. The research, including detailed climatic reconstructions, led to three papers published in the journal Nature. A separate find is giving new insight into their material culture as archaeologists have uncovered a subtly clever tool they think ancient humans would have used to spin rope. The team built replicas of the tool and found it worked remarkably effectively to twist plant fibres into strong rope. Nicholas Conard, an archaeologist from the University of Tübingen in Germany, was part of the team, and the work was published in Science Advances.

Have you ever wondered how athletes transition to "real world" careers after their sporting journey ends? Join us for an inspiring conversation with Olivia King, the former University of Victoria swimmer who switched gears to rowing and made it onto the Canadian national team. Olivia shares her candid story of balancing academics and competitive sports during her university years, the shift from swimming to rowing, and the unique challenges she conquered as the youngest member of the national team.Olivia's tale of determination and resilience is nothing short of awe-inspiring. She didn't make the national team in 2016, but instead of letting this setback break her, she used it as fuel. In 2017, she proved her mettle and earned her place back on the team. She exemplifies that resilience is not just about returning to the battlefield, but also about learning, growing and moving forward with even more vigor. But Olivia's story doesn't end at the finishing line. Post her sports career, she took on a new challenge - the corporate world. From working at the local YMCA to joining the police force, Olivia explored myriad opportunities before finding her niche in business. She applies the same discipline and perseverance she learned as an athlete to her corporate career and encourages us all to view transitions as opportunities for growth and discovery. An interview with Olivia King, design director and type designer It's a double dose of OK this week as our own Olivia Kane is interviewing the Australian design director and type designer, Olivia King. We promise it's a fun and insightful conversation, and not confusing with all the Olivias! We talk about broaching the subject of bespoke typefaces with clients, the joys of open source, the art of creating a typeface that encompasses the essence of a whole geographic area, accessibility, and some mental health and career thoughts for designers. A great conversation to kick off 2022's interviews. We've also got some reading for you this week; something different from Bauhaus, a neat rebrand, some inspiration about the longevity of typography, and a bit of eye-candy in the form of some book spines. Writer Mat Groom lives Australia; artist Eduardo Ferigato lives in Brazil. What these two creators share in common is their work on Self/Made, a sci-fi comic being published through Image on December 5th. This is Mat Groom’s first solo comic writing credit and the first comic series writer Kyle Higgins has edited. Kyle was the writer of The New 52 Nightwing series for DC and of his creator-owned series C.O.W.L. and Hadrian’s Wall. One thing Self/Made’s creators share in common is a passion for hiking. I discuss with Mat and Eduardo places they enjoy and recommend. We also discuss Mat first writing credit in a Power Rangers comic and his podcast on the team called Ranger Danger. Eduardo reflects on how his comic book art has evolved since The Last Phantom for Dynamite Entertainment in 2011 and working on Self/Made with colorist Marcelo Costa. What advice did the experienced letter Troy Peteri provide Mat? Mat also talks about the contributions by logo designer Olivia King and production designer and podcast partner Michael Busuttil. Why makes Mat and Eduardo collaboration seem so effortless? What is their secret to staying on time with the production of the series? Hint: it has something to do with spreadsheets! What is the story behind the special cover for issue #1 that benefits charity? And what is the special contest for Self /Made readers? Finally, Mat and Eduardo answer the fun questions I ask all my guests so we get to know more about them.
