Nick Bostrom, a philosopher, author, and Associate Professor at the Oxford University Department of Philosophy, is the co-founder of the Institute for Ethics and Emerging Technologies and a Research Fellow at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He is one of the world's leading thinkers on the risks and opportunities of artificial intelligence, and has written on a wide range of philosophical and moral issues surrounding machine learning and its implications. In this episode I had the pleasure of speaking with Dr. Sarah Shaw, who is an Honorary fellow of the Oxford Centre for Buddhist Studies; and lecturer for the Oxford University Department of Continuing Education. We spoke about her new book, Mindfulness: Where It Comes From and What It Means – published in paperback by Shambala. This is a very accessible and very well researched book – and we explored the history of mindfulness as it first appeared in the English language, the important role of memory and the oral chanting tradition in early Buddhism – to the multiple functions of mindfulness. We also touch on the significance of the Abhidharma and Abhidharmakosha – and how mindfulness is situated and functions in these schools. Sarah draws from her decade of practicing, researching, and teaching the history of mindfulness. Sarah read Greek and English at Manchester University, where she took a doctorate in English. It was later in her career that she decided to study Pali at Oxford, and she has a deep interest in Early Buddhist (Pāli) suttas and Abhidhamma material on meditation, the Pali chanting traditions. In addition, Sarah practices with the Samatha Association of Britain.

Dr. Simon Stringer. Obtained his Ph.D in mathematical state space control theory and has been a Senior Research Fellow at Oxford University for over 27 years. Simon is the director of the the Oxford Centre for Theoretical Neuroscience and Artificial Intelligence, which is based within the Oxford University Department of Experimental Psychology. His department covers vision, spatial processing, motor function, language and consciousness -- in particular -- how the primate visual system learns to make sense of complex natural scenes. Dr. Stringers laboratory houses a team of theoreticians, who are developing computer models of a range of different aspects of brain function. Simon's lab is investigating the neural and synaptic dynamics that underpin brain function. An important matter here is the The feature-binding problem which concerns how the visual system represents the hierarchical relationships between features. the visual system must represent hierarchical binding relations across the entire visual field at every spatial scale and level in the hierarchy of visual primitives. This public seminar series considers teacher education reforms around the world in order to tease out future directions and possibilities for the relationships between teacher education policy, research and practice. The series marks 100 years since the passing of a statute creating what was known in 1919 as the University Department for the Training of Teachers. Join us this term as we mark the Oxford University Department of Education's 100th anniversary through this series of public events that pay particular tribute to our contributions in the field of teacher education today. Teacher competencies have been discussed relatively extensively in the literature, often linked in educational policy discourses, teacher standards, or even intended outcomes of teacher education. But what do teacher competencies actually mean, how they are related to the core of teacher's work, teacher knowledge and action, and teacher learning in teacher education. This presentation will elaborate teacher competencies by focusing on teaching as a thinking practice (cf. Lampert, 1998), and teacher knowledge, behavior, and agency. Through this, the aim is to understand the complexity of teacher competencies both theoretically and empirically. By leaning on the empirical evidence, the presentation will try to answer to the question: what kinds of characteristics of teacher education cultivate student teacher learning in becoming competent and agentic teachers? And why should we be interested in them?

But what do teacher competencies actually mean, how they are related to the core of teacher’s work, teacher knowledge and action, and teacher learning in teacher education. This presentation will elaborate teacher competencies by focusing on teaching as a thinking practice (cf. Lampert, 1998), and teacher knowledge, behavior, and agency. Through this, the aim is to understand the complexity of teacher competencies both theoretically and empirically. By leaning on the empirical evidence, the presentation will try to answer to the question: what kinds of characteristics of teacher education cultivate student teacher learning in becoming competent and agentic teachers? And why should we be interested in them?

The seminar will start with a brief introduction to the topic of classroom-based interventions, followed by four examples of classroom-based interventions in English, mathematics, science, and history. It will conclude with a commentary drawing across the presentations with a particular focus on implications for teacher education. Can there be such a thing as a ‘moral’ war? Can it ever be right to kill innocent people, even in self-defence? Can there be such a thing as a ‘moral’ war? Can it ever be right to kill innocent people, even in self-defence? How do autonomous weapons, remote control weapons and drones change the landscape of warfare, and our thinking about it? These questions and more will be discussed and debated by our panel of experts: Helen Frowe, Professor of Practical Philosophy at the University of Stockholm: Helen's research focuses on the ethics of war and defensive killing, with a special interest in the moral status of non-combatants and the permissibility of killing innocent people in self-defence. Alex Leveringhaus, James Martin Fellow, Oxford Institute for Ethics, Law and Armed Conflict: his research investigates the moral and legal implications arising from the development and usage of automated (or operationally autonomous) computer-based targeting systems (CBTS) in the military. I am interested in how the development of CBTS affects the rights of combatants during war and to what extent CBTS can be engineered to protect the rights of non-combatants. James Pattison, Professor of Politics, Universty of Manchester: his research interests currently lie in three related areas: (1) Just War Theory and the alternatives to war; (2) humanitarian intervention and the responsibility to protect (R2P); and (3) the use of private military and security companies. The discussion will be chaired by Marianne Talbot, Director of Studies in Philosophy, Oxford University Department for Continuing Education.

Students undertaking undergraduate (first) degrees in Computer Science, Computer Science & Philosophy and Maths & Computer Science undertake a Group Design Practical as a compulsory part of the course. The Group Design Practical, which runs from January, sees teams of four to six undergraduate students battling it out with their chosen project. Many of the challenges having been set, or sponsored by industry partners, which in 2016 included Research, Oxford Asset Management, Bloomberg and Metaswitch. A basic tension exists in education between ideas and reform proposals, on the one hand, and practical work in classrooms, on the other. Teacher educators are often disappointed that their graduates do not use what they have been taught in their preparation programs. Similarly, designers of new curricula or reform teaching approaches are disheartened that teachers often ignore these innovations or translate them into the familiar patterns of normal practice. Conventional attempts to resolve this tension focus on modifying teachers' knowledge, beliefs, and skills with respect to the recommended practices. Recent analyses of the nature of practical work suggest that greater focus needs to be placed on understanding the goal systems and tools embedded in the work teachers actually do. This presentation will review some recent work on practical rationality and heuristics that is focused on bridging ideas and practice in teaching.
