In 2016, one man in a red sweater became the nation's sweetheart... until he didn't. Ken Bone became a celebrity overnight after a star turn at the height of an October 2016 political nightmare. Just two days after the infamous Access Hollywood tape made many think Trump's first run for president was a lost cause, after a year of "her emails" and what felt like an infinity war of an election cycle, the world took comfort in a normal midwestern man who worked at a power plant and loved anime. What made Ken so appealing, and -- apologies for taking us back to such a cursed period -- what shitstorm was he caught in the middle of? In part one, Jamie examines the media environment that made Ken a star, and the milkshake duck cycle and a Reddit scandal that made him one of the seminal internet main characters to this day. Next week... we talk to Ken. Donate to Ken's nonprofit of choice, the St. Patrick Center of St. Louis here: https://www.stpatrickcenter.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Step four is to make a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.Step five is to admit to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.Step six is we must be entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.Step seven is to humbly ask Him to remove our shortcomings.Step eight it to make a list of all persons we had harmed, and become willing to make amends to them all.Step nine is to make direct amends to such people wherever possible except to do so would injure them or others.Step ten is continuing to take personal inventory and, when we were wrong, promptly admitting it.Step eleven is to sough through prayer and meditation to prove our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.We start off at the Red Door Church every Sunday @ 3:00 p.m. and will hit several locations around including but not limited to St. Patrick Center, Grey Block, Vess Soda Company just to name a few. We try to have a lunch, snack bags, toiletries, a prayer, a smile, and always someone to talk to. Till further notice however we are practicing safe distance. By: David M. Foster, CFP®, CAP®Hello, listeners, and welcome to the 7th episode of the Gateway Giving Podcast! My guest today is Natalie Self. Natalie is the executive director of STEMSTL, whose mission is to collectively develop and deploy quality systems-level changes that will advance STEM learning and career opportunities to empower the growth of diverse problem solvers, innovators, and critical thinkers, enabling them to thrive in a globally connected world. Now, if the sentence I just read felt intimidating to wrap your brain around, don't worry, Natalie is going to translate all of that while explaining how, exactly, STEMSTL goes about attempting to achieve that mission. However, the thing I want to point out is here is how STEMSTL differs from all of the organizations my previous guests represent. If you look through the list of my previous podcast guests, the St. Louis Area Foodbank, St. Patrick Center, Meds & Food For Kids, etc., you'll notice that those organizations are primarily focused on treating the symptoms rather than curing the disease. In the interview, Natalie used the term “remediation” to describe the focus of these non-profits and most of the non-profits you're probably familiar with. To be clear, that is not a pejorative; there are few greater callings than aiding human suffering where it exists. However, Natalie's focus, both at STEMSTL and more broadly, is on systems change. In other words, how do we change the systems and institutions that create the necessity for these remediation focused non-profits to exist. For example, whereas St. Patrick Center is asking the question, “How do we help this person who is experiencing homelessness to find and maintain stable housing?” an organization that was focused on systems change would be asking, “How do we adapt and change our institutions so that we can reduce or eliminate the need for people to reach out to St. Patrick Center in the first place?”Of course, the challenge with funding and working on systems change is that, in most cases, it's much harder to measure and track results. If I give $1,000 to the St. Louis Area Foodbank, I know that I'm buying 4,000 meals for needy families. If I give $1,000 to an organization fighting for systems change, how much systems change, exactly, am I funding? It's a tough question to answer, but it's an important one, because I believe that systems change can ultimately be so much more impactful than remediation and Natalie provides a fantastic framework for thinking about exactly how to approach that problem. As always, if you have any questions, requests, or suggestions for people or organizations for me to interview, you can email me at david@gatewaywealthstl.com. By: David M. Foster, CFP®, CAP®Hello listeners and welcome to the Gateway Giving Podcast. My guest today is Amanda Laumeyer, the Senior Director of Development at St. Patrick Center. I have never been homeless, and there has never been any point in my life where I have even had to consider the possibility that I might become homeless. It is unfathomable to me, and I imagine for most of you listening, that I wouldn't have a warm bed to sleep in every night. Because of that, I've always had a soft spot for organizations that support people who are experiencing homelessness. If you listen to the end, you'll hear Amanda describe the clients St. Patrick center works with and the needs they typically have when the first come through the doors, the nature of their housing first policy, how you should handle panhandlers, and what your donation to St. Patrick center is buying. My biggest takeaway from this interview is that nearly half of the people St. Patrick Center works with to either find housing or prevent homelessness are kids. When you hear the word homelessness, you probably have an image that pops into your head of a single middle-aged man with a disheveled beard sleeping on a park bench, but when you hear that nearly half of all people experiencing homelessness are kids, you quickly realize that most homelessness is invisible, and it is all around us in ways that we don't realize. One final note, we had some technical difficulties during this recording, and, as a result, my audio on here is a little off, so I apologize for that, and I expect that will be rectified for future episodes. The good news is Amanda sounded great, so with that I hope you enjoy my interview with Amanda Laumeyer!

Did you know that Holy Communion partners in issues of housing and homelessness? In 2017, a big group of volunteers helped to renovate the house we own behind the church to help house folks who need housing. Our partners in this work, St. Patrick Center, join us to talk about housing and homelessness in St. Louis, especially in the midst of the pandemic. Thanks to Jonathan Belcher and Lana Watson!

Episode 1: The Evolution of Philanthropy When the Greek titan Prometheus stole fire from the gods to give it to the struggling human race, Zeus accused him of being a “ philanthropos tropos ” – a being who loves humans. Since ancient times, our understanding of why people give has changed considerably. From the Catholic Church to the IRS, the social and political structures that support giving have changed, too. So where are we now? And where are we headed, as a sector and as a philanthropic society? University of Notre Dame historian Dr. Marc Hardy and Ruth McCambridge, Editor-in-Chief of Nonprofit Quarterly , join us to discuss. With the opening of the Biddle Housing Opportunities Center in August 2016, the closing of the New Life Evangelistic Center this spring, and synthetic marijuana overdoses among the poor, homelessness has been a major topic of discussion lately in the St. Louis area. Playing a major role in those discussions is St. Patrick Center (stpatrickcenter.org), the Catholic Charities agency with the goal of building permanent, positive change for people who are homeless or at risk of being homeless. Her t-shirt says MODERN FARMER. Architect turned Agri-Innovator Mary Ostafi is one, in spades. Her vision, hard work and business savvy continues to grow St. Louis first urban farm on top of a downtown building: Urban Harvest STL. When Earthworms last talked with Mary, in June 2015, she was just digging in for her Food Roof's first, short growing season. She had blown through the roof of a Kickstarter campaign and secured a big stormwater management grant and was planting the seeds of her enterprising dream firmly atop the second story of a warehouse building in the city's core. This year, she and her largely volunteer team are fixin' to post achievement gains well over that first season's impressive growth of 1,033 pounds of food produced from 62 varieties of plants, with 60% of it donated to further Urban Harvest's mission to "Grow Food Where You Live!" Mary Ostafi's timing was perfect for planting her non-profit idea firmly into the living soil of both the sustainable food and food justice movements that are sweeping St. Louis and the country overall. Urban Harvest works in partnership with social service leaders like the St. Louis Food Policy Coalition, St. Patrick Center, St. Louis Metro Market and more, and has tapped into the farmer training program of EarthDance Farms to create one job in the farm's first year, and significantly boost the profile of all this collaborative energy. Plus eating WELL - and hosting parties! Check out the Food Roof as a volunteer, any Saturday morning - and get your tix while they last for RAISE THE ROOF, the first Urban Harvest fund-raiser on Thursday Sept 22 - which happily also happens to be the Autumnal Equinox. Earthworms salutes you, Mary Ostafi - YOU GROW GREEN GIRL! Thanks to Josh Nothum, Earthworms engineer. To clear up the question in this interview: a fruit is a seed-bearing structure that develops from the ovary of a flowering plant, whereas vegetables are all other plant parts, such as roots, leaves and stems. BUT there's overlap, thank you tomatoes - and always something else to learn.
When the City of Arnold, MO had to remove an 1890 farmhouse to build a new municipal facility, they called the intrepid non-profit Refab to safely, responsibly take the old home apart and make its fine vintage materials available to appreciative new users, through resale.Eric Schwarz - a young guy with good tools, Green vision and business sense - launched Refab just three years ago. He is building on experience gained while earning a Fine Arts degree, teaching about sustainability around STL, and managing sales and deconstruction for the Habitat For Humanity St. Louis ReStore. He's providing steady, well-paying jobs for veterans who need a hand, in a partnership with St. Patrick Center. And he's leading efforts to keep over 1,000 tons of useful stuff a year in use, instead of going to landfills. Refab sells what they deconstruct: flooring, beadboard, and de-nailed lumber of all kinds; vintage plumbing and lighting fixtures, cabinets (carefully removed) - and more. Resale store prices make these items a great bargain for designers and builders of restaurants, new homes, and businesses with sustainable tastes. This month Refab celebrates a big move to a new 30,000 ft2 warehouse at 3130 Gravois in St. Louis, recycling the former Union Brewery into working and sales space. Join the celebration on October 30 - and shop Refab's material treasures every Friday-Sunday, 9 am-5 pm. Your business supports this intrepid non-profit, giving new life to amazing stuff and jobs to guys who've served our country. And you get the goods and deals!
