In this Convo of Flanigan's Eco-Logic, Ted speaks with Jack Groh, Director of Environmental Programs for the National Football League (NFL). He is also the Senior Vice President of Strategy for Legacy Sustainability, an independent consultancy that he and his wife, Susan Groh manage to develop and implement climate mitigation and adaptation strategies around major sporting events.Jack and Susan have been minimizing the environmental impacts of major sports events for 30 years, including the NFL's major special events. They also designed the sustainability plan for the NCAA College Football championship series. They are widely recognized for the unique and impactful community projects they develop and have consulted on sustainable transportation development, municipal waste diversion, building sustainability, and renewable energy.Ted and Jack discuss his varied background, growing up in Massachusetts, attending UMass Amherst, then going on to teach straight out of college before going back to school for journalism, spending some years TV reporting, before diving into consulting in communications and PR for companies around environmental issues. Since then, Jack and Susan Groh, now based in Warwick, Rhode Island, have been at the forefront of making the NFL and other organizations more environmentally conscious. In 1993, they developed the first environmental initiatives ever implemented at any professional sports league in the United States at Super Bowl XXVIII in Atlanta, Georgia. Their journey began with simple recycling projects during the Super Bowl and evolved into making the game the greenest professional championship in the world. Their efforts extend beyond visible actions, including recycling, food recovery and material repurposing, to making a substantial difference in the environmental and community impact of large events. Through their independent consulting efforts at Legacy Sustainability, they aim to leave each community better than they found it and inspire others to do the same. Some of the green legacy programs they leave behind in every community include planting trees, creating pollinator gardens, habitat restoration, equipment donations and school supply programs, recycling and composting, taking excess food and drink off to local food banks, and using renewable energy and helping organizations get renewable energy certificates. Jack highlights the Miami Coral Reef Project, Super Kids Super Sharing event, and the NFL Green Super Bowl LVIII Program launch.

Welcome back to another episode of "Your Drone Questions. Answered"! In this episode we interview our expert guest Glenn Dickow, a citizen member of the Town of Delavan Lake Committee in southern Wisconsin and a lake quality advocate. His mission is to address the water quality issues facing Lake Delavan and educate others who love the lake.In this episode, we explore how drones are used to support environmental initiatives, focusing specifically on Glenn's work with Lake Delavan. The drone provides a unique and new perspective for lake property owners and boaters, allowing them to see the lake from a different angle.Glenn explains that water quality is measured based on factors such as clarity and phosphorus levels. Excessive phosphorus from surrounding farmland can lead to the growth of plants and algae, eventually harming the lake ecosystem. To address this issue, Glenn highlights the importance of maintaining the ponds that filter out the phosphorus-laden sediment. He uses his drone to capture footage of the ponds and the dredging process, providing visual insights to lake lovers and stakeholders.Glenn shares his experience with the DJI Mini 3 Pro drone, which he finds easy to use, even as a novice. The drone's safety features, such as returning home when the battery is low or out of sight, alleviate concerns about accidents. He plans to take a certification course to ensure responsible drone piloting near private airports and looks forward to exploring other sections of the lake to create informative videos. We conclude the episode by discussing the advice Glenn has for beginners interested in using drones for environmental initiatives. He emphasizes the importance of passion and using drones as a unique storytelling tool to convey messages effectively. Taking the initiative and fearlessly trying it out are key to success.
"I shall be telling this with a sigh, somewhere ages, and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I - I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference." - Robert Frost For many of us, America has become a road worn weary with the footsteps of those who came before us. We spend much time on our phones, watching TV, escaping into a video game, or mindlessly scrolling the internet searching for emotional stimulus. It almost seems that many of us never consider the world outside our front door. Within the Great Outdoors lies a fascinating and essential part of our world. The vast and diverse landscape surrounding us provides sustenance, clean air, water, and even shelter. Research, published in January 2020 by Frontiers in Psychology, has shown that spending time in nature can reduce stress and anxiety, improve mood, boost creativity, and increase energy levels. As little as ten minutes of sitting or walking in a diverse array of natural settings significantly and positively impacted defined psychological and physiological markers of mental well-being. Medical benefits exist as well. Being outdoors can improve cardiovascular health, and reduce the risk of a multitude of chronic diseases. Despite all of these benefits, our modern, and fast-paced lives often provide the perfect excuse to forget how important nature really is. Joining us in episode 87 of the Wolf and Bull podcast is our friend and 2-time American Ninja Warrior National Finalist, Adventure Host, Wildlife Expert, and Conservationist, Anthony Porter. We had the pleasure of speaking with him about his experiences as an outdoor expert and professional athlete, how ethical and effective environmental initiatives can make the world a better place, and how venturing off the beaten path, onto a road less traveled, can benefit all of us. This week's guest Eivind Fliflet took a break from parental leave (when we recorded this episode in May 2022) to talk with us about what it's like working for the world's largest sovereign wealth fund, Norges Bank Investment Management. Owning 1.3% of the globe's listed companies, you need only take a quick look at their website to see the oil fund's market value going up by hundreds of millions of Norwegian krone before your very eyes. Eivind, who considers himself an idealistic pragmatist, heads up the Environmental Initiatives team within Corporate Governance at the fund and is responsible for weighing in on big topics such as climate change, biodiversity and ethics, and providing recommendations to the companies in which the Fund. We learn from Eivind how the Fund develops views and expectations on climate change and environmental, social and governance (ESG) guidelines to influence the global market and how sustainability needs to be embedded in an organisation's core. We explore oxymorons, career shifts, CEO salaries and the point when Eivind personally discovered the complexities of solving wicked sustainability problems and the paradox that exists between strategy vs action. He shares his views on internal activism and burnout, company value alignment, and that you can be impactful whilst having a balanced approach (something we both struggle with!). For change makers listening to this episode, Eivind leaves us with some words of insight to propel you into your own impact journey. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/modernidealist/message

Brenna Davis currently serves as the Director of Environmental Initiatives at the Ignatian Solidarity Network. She is a certified spiritual director, Cuyahoga County Master Recycler, a member of NCR's EarthBeat Advisory Panel, and a board member for the Jesuit Retreat Center in Parma, OH and Bethlehem Farm in Pence Springs, WV. From “Life Lived Wild: Adventures at the Edge of the Map":By the time he was thirty, Rick Ridgeway had gone on more adventures than most people do in an entire lifetime and calculates that he's spent over five years of his life sleeping in tents. Called “the real Indiana Jones” by Rolling Stone magazine, Ridgeway doesn't shy away from unknown territory. In fact, he seeks it. Ridgeway is recognized as one of the world's foremost mountaineers. He was part of the 1978 team that were the first Americans to summit K2, the world's second-highest mountain, and he has climbed new routes and explored little-known regions on six continents. What really comes alive in Life Lived Wild are his relationships with his fellow travelers, such as Patagonia founder Yvon Chouinard, The North Face founder Doug Tompkins, and filmmaker Jimmy Chin. Some companions don't make the return journey.Ridgeway is also an environmentalist, writer, photographer, filmmaker, and businessman. For fifteen years beginning in 2005 he oversaw environmental affairs at the outdoor clothing company Patagonia and served as the VP of Environmental Initiatives. He has authored six books and dozens of magazine articles and produced or directed many documentary films. He was honored by National Geographic with their Lifetime Achievement in Adventure Award and was awarded the Lowell Thomas Award by the Explorers' Club. Ridgeway serves on the boards of Tompkins Conservation and the Turtle Conservancy. In this episode, Richard Sinkoff, the director of environmental programs and planning at the Port of Oakland, is our guest. He discusses a new initiative to have California fund $2.25 billion improvements in ports and infrastructure to create a zero-emissions distribution network. The network would aim for zero-emissions handling, including trucks that come in and out of the state's ports. It also would provide electric charging stations along heavily travelled freight corridors to reduce the carbon footprint of cargo being transported throughout California. The annual Gartner and AWESOME study on women employed in supply chain show a steady increase in the number of women working in the industry. It's now at the highest point since the survey began in 2016. However, the report also reveals a lack of women represented at the highest company levels and cites a lack of opportunities and development programs for women executives.Digital transformation continues to steamroll through supply chains. A new report shows that one of the driving factors accelerating digitization has to do with B2B buying habits. Procurement at manufacturers, consumer package goods firms, and financial services institutions show that more activity is being done online since the start of the pandemic. That is expected to only accelerate in the future as buyers seek better online purchasing experiences.Articles and resources mentioned in this episode:Port of Oakland websitePort of Oakland joins bid for extra funding for green operationsShare of women in supply chain workforce hits 41 survey showsReport: most buyers will switch suppliers for a better online experienceVisit DCVelocity.com for the latest news.
