After reading the book Us, After by Rachel Zimmerman (https://amzn.to/4239BfW), I wanted to dive into the topic of when a parent commits suicide and how this impacts adult children later on. In today's episode, we cover how kids think of this, how depression hijacks your brain to make this seem like the best option, what to do if you are severely depressed and have had these thoughts, and a reframe that has been useful for many of my clients over the years who have kids and who struggle with suicidality.IF YOU HAVE SUICIDAL THOUGHTS, CALL 988, THE SUICIDE AND CRISIS HELPLINE.Follow me on Substack!https://substack.com/@drpsychmom1Subscribe if you love the DPM show! https://creators.spotify.com/pod/show/drpsychmomshow/subscribe and you'll get all my awesome bonus episodes! Host Cyrus Webb welcomes author Rachel Zimmerman to Conversations LIVE to discuss her book US, AFTER and what she hopes readers take away from it.
RACHEL ZIMMERMAN, an award-winning journalist, is the author of Us, After: A Memoir of Love and Suicide. Her book examines domestic devastation and resurgence, the struggle between public and private selves, life's shifting perspectives, the work of motherhood, and the secrets we keep. She will share how she confronted the unimaginable and discovered the good in what remains. When a state trooper appeared at Rachel Zimmerman's door to report that her husband had jumped to his death off a nearby bridge, she fell to her knees, unable to fully absorb the news. How could the man she'd married, a devoted father and robotics professor at MIT with no history of mental illness, have committed such an act? How would she explain this to her young daughters? And could she have stopped him? A longtime journalist, she probed obsessively, believing answers would help her survive. She interviewed doctors and suicide researchers. She spoke with a man who jumped off the same bridge and lived. She got answers, but not the answer—the answer to the question of why her husband killed himself. And so began years of learning to make peace with not knowing.

Send us a textIt was a huge honour to get an email from Rachel Zimmerman's publicist asking if I would consider reading a pre-publication copy of her new book, Us After, and to have Rachel on the show. Us After is the astonishing memoir of Rachel and her daughters' lives after the death of her husband Seth by suicide. Before you think this is all going to be very, very depressing, it really isn't. It's an incredibly important and insightful book which Rachel describes as being "a little window for those people who say, 'I can't imagine what it must have been like'" because she wanted to give other people a sense it. There's family life. There are tears. There is the incomprehensible death of her beloved husband and through it so much optimism and hope and a sense of needing to move forwards. I absolutely loved Us, After and I have really, really enjoyed talking to Rachel.

Joanne Lee Molinaro's debut cookbook "The Korean Vegan Cookbook: Reflections and Recipes from Omma's Kitchen" has been nominated for a James Beard award for Best Vegetable-Focused cookbook. She talks about family and food. And, after receiving a multiple sclerosis diagnosis, Dr. Anne Brewster found that writing about her story put her back into control of her narrative and her healing. She talks about her book "The Healing Power of Storytelling," co-authored by Rachel Zimmerman.
For episode homepage, resources and links, visit: https://kristenmanieri.com/episode166/ Description When Harvard-trained physician Dr. Annie Brewster was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2001, she realized firsthand that the medical system was failing her in one critical way: she didn't feel seen or heard. Her doctors weren't listening. This experience launched her onto a path to discover how exploring and sharing her healing journey, and becoming the author of her own story, taught her to integrate her traumatic health event into her new and evolving identity. Annie now uses applied storytelling techniques to help others strengthen connections and cultivate resilience to move forward amid uncertainty and fear. Guest Bio Annie Brewster, MD, is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, a practicing physician at Massachusetts General Hospital, a writer, and a storyteller. She is also a patient, diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 2001. She started recording patient narratives in 2010 and, integrating her personal experiences with the research supporting the health benefits of narrative, founded Health Story Collaborative (HSC) in 2013. Brewster lives in Cambridge with her husband, four children, and two dogs. She prefers to be awake rather than asleep, and loves to hike, run in the woods, ski, and play ice hockey. You can learn more about Brewster and HSC at www.healthstorycollaborative.org and @HealthStoryCo. Her new book, co-authored with journalist Rachel Zimmerman, is The Healing Power of Storytelling: Using Personal Narrative to Navigate Illness, Trauma, and Loss.
