Author, speaker and communications trainer Pellegrino Riccardi opens Act 1 reflecting on growing up as a child of Italian immigrants in the UK; “You know, once I left the door of the house I was in the UK… When I went back in the house again, I was back in Italy.” He shares the contrasts between his rugged Italian “hillbilly” roots and the relatively polite English schools in which he was educated… and the impact of the dark, controlling - even violent - shadow side of his school experience.Pellegrino discusses the wisdom behind pushing boundaries, drawing on influences that range from comic Ricky Gervais to his own gun-toting, rough-and-tumble cousins he spent time with every summer in Italy. He reminds us that without pushing boundaries and taking risks, growth simply doesn't happen. We spend a few minutes on the “Slap Seen ‘Round the World”, leading us into a rich conversation about the roots of violence - including that which Pelligrino experienced, witnessed and, coming full circle, came to perpetrate in his own home.Pellegrino wraps up Act 1 by speaking on the intersections of shame, pain, violence, trauma, shortcomings, and the importance of finding language and other ways of communicating - honestly and transparently - what is present, lest things unexpressed find their way to violent acting out.For over 30 years, Pellegrino Riccardi has excited and delighted audiences all over the world with a style of public speaking that brings together the ability to present complex ideas in a simple and accessible way, which is then wrapped up in a seamless fusion of masterful storytelling and observational humour.Pellegrino has a unique ability to quickly connect with a wide spectrum of audiences, from Baby-Boomers to Z Generation, from public sector employees to C-suite executives, from high-risk entrepreneurial enterprises to more “conservative” international organisations. You can find out more on his website, on LinkedIn, Facebook, or "the Insta."If you're a man or know any, Pellegrino's book, Drowning Quietly - Memoir of a Man's Shortcomings, is highly recommended reading!

Drawing on the voices of atomic bomb survivors and the new science of forensic archaeology, Charles Pellegrino describes the events and the aftermath of two days in August when nuclear devices, detonated over Japan, changed life on Earth forever. To Hell and Back offers readers a stunning, “you are there” time capsule, wrapped in elegant prose. Charles scientific authority and close relationship with the A-bomb survivors make his account the most gripping and authoritative ever written. At the narrative’s core are eyewitness accounts of those who experienced the atomic explosions firsthand—the Japanese civilians on the ground. As the first city targeted, Hiroshima is the focus of most histories. Pellegrino gives equal weight to the bombing of Nagasaki, symbolized by the thirty people who are known to have fled Hiroshima for Nagasaki—where they arrived just in time to survive the second bomb. One of them, Tsutomu Yamaguchi, is the only person who experienced the full effects of both cataclysms within Ground Zero. The second time, the blast effects were diverted around the stairwell behind which Yamaguchi’s office conference was convened—placing him and few others in a shock cocoon that offered protection while the entire building disappeared around them.Dr. Pellegrino is the author of twelve books, including Unearthing Atlantis and Her Name, Titanic. He is a paleontologist who designs robotic space probes and relativistic rockets and is the scientist whose dinosaurs cloning recipe inspired Michael Crichton's bestselling novel Jurassic Park. In his spare time, Dr. Pellegrino writes acclaimed sf novels and mind-bending technothrillers. Jan de Bont, the director of Speed and Twister, has been signed on to direct the film version of Pellgrino's biological disaster novel Dust. The recipient of the 2000 Isaac Asimov Memorial Award for Science Writing,

It has become something of a received wisdom within the present day that the mainstream media exist as the pinnacle of what is possible in sports journalism. Whilst it is not in our interest to reject this assumption, here at A Team of John O’Sheas we believe that some of the most perceptive insight regarding the top teams in the country comes from the fans themselves. In the course of this podcast series, we will be bringing together some of the most influential fans from across the Premier League to give you the low-down on the teams that they watch week in, week out. We’ll look back over the season just gone, try to get a handle on the transfer activity that rumbles on through the summer months, and look forwards to the next season which, as always, seems to creep up on us with ever increasing speed. In this episode, we’re back on the south coast and the ever growing enclave of Premier League sides. Southampton, along with Portsmouth, were the original purveyors of south coast Premier League sides. Yet where both fell away from the top division for a while, it is only Southampton who have made it back. Becoming the prototype for football clubs seeking to achieve mid-table security during the nascence of New Football, Southampton are often spoken about with a misty-eyed idealism by fans of clubs hovering above the relegation zone. Yet all is not hunky-dory in the land of fleece sweaters and ice cream cones. For the sellers club, you live by the move, you die by the move. A litany of departures have flowed through Southampton squad, making it seem more like an airport terminal at times. And it is not simply the players, it seems impossible for Saints to hold onto a manager for more than a year these days. With Claude Puel only lasting the obligatory year, Southampton are now headed up by Mauricio Pelligrino. For many of the fans, this cyclicality is tiring. The question on everyone’s lips, then is: will Pelligrino keep the club in its annual orbit? Or is this the season where they will finally break the curve? Joining us today are two familiar faces from the world of football media: Alex Stewart and Nico Morales. Alex is a creative consultant for uMAXit football, writing tactics and stats pieces. He writes regularly about Football Manager with Iain Macintosh, and has also been published in The Guardian, The Blizzard, and on the BBC. Nico is a freelance journalist and host of the Weekly Rondo podcast. His work has been featured on NBCSN and he currently writes the occasional piece for ESD analysis and his own medium.
Inside Jokes - Sunday June 19th, 2016 - Olga Pelligrino, Frank Spadone, & Eric Johnston
The show starts off without much fuel. We have no Coco-host, no Squidge and no audience. Fire Captain Henry "Jim" Larkin shows up but too late to revive a dying introduction. A discussion of one of SK's recent tours results in a hazardous situation - a new song by Shantwon, "I stole the moment". The conversation appears to heat up with an email about the Pacific Ocean and its warm water Blob, however any expectation for stimulating debate is quickly snuffed out by a droning on about the new MUNI schedule and bus stops. The talk gets so dry we are ultimately required to keep a 30 foot defensible space between it and the bomb shelter. Just when it looks like we will all be asphyxiated by indifference (Mitch Albom's latest best seller), Babette enters and injects some much needed fresh air into the proceedings by regaling us with tales of her exploits in the old west as well as exposing SK's lack of funds when it came time to pop the question. SK's history lesson about the SFFD threatens to smother any spark of appeal that the podcast may have had when Jim attempts to rekindle interest with ghost stories and accounts of working out with Jim Jones in the '70s. Sufficed to say, this week, as with most around here, there was never any danger of the podcast catching fire - It's all suppressed with Pelligrino
00:00:00 - Patrick and Ryan obviously agree with Sarah Werning that paleontology is relevant. But can they convince Ben, and, by proxy, the world? 00:20:44 - Drinks are what happen when you realize maybe it wasn't that relevant after all. Patrick tries a Constalker Dark Wheat dropped off by Ryan, who in turn is having some overly sweet Choya-brand Umeshoo (i.e. Japanese plum wine). Ben approves, but himself is having some lemon Pelligrino. 00:26:54 - Matt Damon needs an exosuit to get to the Greek afterline so he can fight Jodie Foster in this week's installment of Trailer Trash Talk all about Neil Blomkamp's Elysium. 00:37:17 - Neutrinos are a thing, but barely. A detector in Antarctica has found a few that we're pretty sure are from outside the solar system. Ben explains, but will he beat the duck? 00:50:16 - PaleoPOWs are a lot like neutrinos, they come in several flavors and are hard to catch. The guys are awed when Ryan reveals a donation from John P. as well as an e-mail about all the good work he's doing helping the people of rural Ghana get better medical care, all while sporting a Science... sort of magnet on his laptop. Maybe more awesome than we can handle. Thanks, John! Ben reads an e-mail about the pronunciation of the letter 'z' from Guy D. but forgets why he's being informed in the first place (Hint: Episode - 171). Patrick presents a new addition to the Brachiolope Media Gallery courtesy of a drawing made by Anothy and posted to DeskSketch. Thanks, Anothy! Thanks for listening and be sure to check out the Brachiolope Media Network for more great science podcasts! Music for this week's show: Justify My Thug - Jay Z Oh What A Beautiful Mornin' - Hugh Jackman (Yes, that Hugh Jackman) Elysium - Hans Zimmer & Lisa Gerrard The Arrival - Atmosphere
