With so many changes happening across the digital marketing landscape, sometimes the best strategy is to have no strategy at all — at least when it comes to social media, according Melissa Ben-Ishay, co-founder and CEO of dessert company Baked By Melissa. Instead, Ben-Ishay props her phone up on her kitchen counter at least once a week, where she walks her TikTok followers through everything from how to make crispy rice to gnocchi, and, of course, a catalog of desserts. Ben-Ishay is one of many founders-turned-influencers who are navigating the booming influencer marketing space and putting a face to their brands to more authentically connect with followers. The founder-influencer pipeline is standard at this point, and perhaps the trend is most commonplace in the small- to medium-sized business and direct-to-consumer brand spaces, where founders are cranking out content to keep up with the likes of influencers who are launching their own brands. In this episode of the Digiday Podcast, Ben-Ishay talks about being a founder-influencer, and shares her thoughts on the ever-looming TikTok ban and why Baked by Melissa's social strategy is no strategy at all.

This week, Jason is joined by mother, baker, and founder of Baked by Melissa, Melissa Ben-Ishay! The New York City based entrepreneur's brand became famous for its signature bite-sized cupcakes and treats starting back in 2008. Previously working in advertising, Melissa was unexpectedly fired and decided to reinvent herself based on her passion for baking after successfully selling her cupcakes through various catering based events. She opened her first retail store in 2009. Fast forward to today and Baked by Melissa now operates 14 total locations and delivers all across the US through her online marketplace. She has also partnered with organizations such as Make A Wish, Weight Watchers, Oatly and several other non-profit organizations all across the country. Melissa gives insight to what makes her bite-size cupcakes such a success in the baking industry, what goes into the product, what her first television spot was, how she was able to finance the company with human capital, where they do all the baking, what goes into the decision to collaborate with another brand, and how COVID impacted the business. Melissa also reveals how she keeps the customer in mind, what time is the busiest for the company, what she did on the day she was fired, why she was given the opportunity to write a cookbook, and why her food philosophy is. What is the core to her business? How did Baked by Melissa get into Madison Square Garden? Melissa reveals all that and so much more in another episode you can't afford to miss! Melissa Ben-Ishay is the founder and CEO of the bite-sized-cupcake empire Baked by Melissa. Since Ben-Ishay and her partners founded the company in 2008, Baked by Melissa has sold over 250 million cupcakes, opened 14 brick-and-mortar stores, and created a thriving e-commerce business. It's the best thing that ever happened to you. … Go home. Bake your cupcakes. We'll start a business together,” he told her. From there, Baked by Melissa was born. Tune in to hear how Ben-Ishay continues to evolve her career, including stepping into the role of CEO of the multimillion-dollar company and her most recent pivot to TikTok sensation. Who knew that a mutual love of the Grateful Dead could ignite the start of a cupcake empire? When Melissa Ben-Ishay made tie dye cupcakes for a fellow fan and friend, her colorful creations quickly became the dessert of choice in her circle. At her brother's urging, Melissa started baking mini cupcakes to order, and 15 years later the direct-to-consumer brand, Baked by Melissa, can be enjoyed in all 50 states. Growing slowly over time has allowed the company to expand with success. And the key to effective leadership? According to Melissa, her curiosity and openness to advice has been her number one asset. From the beginning -- the first hire, the brand values, and the initial vision of the website -- cupcake dynamo Baked by Melissa has been focused on the experience of the customer. It's part of the recipe. And with cupcakes being an emotional purchase, celebrating something happy, soothing something sad, or thanking when something is good, it's personal for both the customer and for co-founder Melissa Ben-Ishay, whose name is on the wall. Every experience a customer has reflects on Melissa herself. She joins Liliana Petrova to share how values have driven some of the most important decisions Melissa has had to make in the past 13 years, including: reacting quickly in the first moments of the pandemic; taking the risk to launch an epic and expensive customer experience campaign which both connected with customers and drove brand awareness for years to come; and, how this mompreneur had to overcome her initial reluctance to become the CEO of her own company only to find herself exactly where she should have been all along. Today's guest is Jivana Heyman. Jivana is the founder of Accessible Yoga, an organization that focuses on "sharing the benefits of yoga with anyone who currently does not have access to these practices, and with communities that have been excluded or underserved." Jivana seamlessly weaves together his background in social activism with his passion for yoga in his latest book, Accessible Yoga: Poses and Practices for Every Body." Melissa Statler had a quick and mostly flowing birth. Feeling elated, she placed her newborn to her breast, only to be met with excruciating pain and instant damage to her nipples. As her confidence drained, she was informed that because her baby was large for gestational age, she would have to meet certain sugar level requirements during the first series of feedings, adding stress to injury. How did Melissa overcome these and more breastfeeding problems, to have the satisfying and nurturing breastfeeding relationship she has today? Go listen. Melissa Ben-Ishay took something very tiny and built it into something very big. The “tiny” is cupcakes. The “big” is Baked by Melissa, which over the last decade has grown beyond its popular storefronts into a fast growing online business, with corporate gifting, events, and more. Melissa is quick to share that her attitude towards life and how she takes on challenges have been a big part of her success, and choosing personal growth over insanity has been her key inspiration. When she started baking cupcakes after losing her advertising job, it didn’t just generate an idea for a business—it illustrated Melissa’s values of being your best self, telling yourself how strong and capable you are, and loving what you do. Melissa joins Socialfly co-founders Stephanie Cartin and Courtney Spritzer for a conversation about building her business and career, and describes her journey to success. She shares the challenges and joys of building a business with your sibling, and how you keep momentum when they move on to another opportunity; the importance of having a true leader; why you don’t send messages when you're emotional; how word of mouth and gifting have been key to the growth of Baked by Melissa; why gifting cupcakes might be a great sales strategy; Melissa’s toughest year, and special moments; how the business went rent-free in a prime location for 5 years; and, Melissa shares her superpower, and the goal of 100 million cupcakes. Plus, a surprise!

It's true -- she’s real. There really is a Melissa at Baked by Melissa, the popular and unique New York born bakery known for its seemingly endless varieties of tiny cupcakes— with 14 retail locations and a burgeoning ecommerce business that now outpaces the brick and mortar. She’s a mom, a company president, and a self-described mad scientist——and rarely do you see the leader of a successful brand, much less one that has weathered the bursting of a trend bubble, who remains so in love with their business and continually creates new and exciting recipes, product concepts, and inventive marketing and partnership strategies. Melissa Ben-Ishay shares her journey and insights with hosts Chris Hansen (IgnitionOne) and Rebecca Fitts. In this episode: How Baked by Melissa has grown and adapted from a small retail store at the tail end of the recession of 2008 to a company that has grown its reputation in retail as well as growing its e-commerce presence Baked by Melissa’s origin as an e-commerce company operating out of Melissa’s apartment after she was fired from her marketing job, where you could PayPal Melissa and she would bake and deliver cupcakes around New York City How Melissa solved a problem she faced picking up cupcakes on her way home from work every day and turned it into an instantly recognizable brand identity, with 70% of customers having discovered Baked by Melissa through word of mouth What the future looks like for Baked by Melissa, and why they are putting a focus on e-commerce and pop-ups in the coming year The challenges of selling a product that has a relatively short shelf life span, and what the company is doing to reduce the amount of time the product spends exposed to air so customers receive their cupcakes as fresh as possible Melissa shares some upcoming cupcakes for summer 2019 How Melissa has found a balance between taking suggestions from customers and fans about what they want to see as future flavors and staying true to her own values and taste Why the tie-dye cupcake is the most popular BbM offering The importance of aesthetically pleasing cupcakes, and the thought process behind the designs and the recipes to make them as enticing as possible How Baked by Melissa is able to scale at the rate it has and still offer hand-baked cupcakes made with the best ingredients The team behind Melissa that has helped build the brand, from CEO Seth Horowitz to Ashley Shears, who has become the brand’s photographer since working with Melissa on her cookbook The three principles that customers love about Baked by Melissa, and how the future marketing and branding directions plan to emphasize that the cupcakes are handmade, in a variety of flavors, and that Melissa is a real person How Baked by Melissa is using new technologies to link the customer experience in store and online and to educate the customer in all the ways they can engage with the brand The B2B aspect of Baked by Melissa, and the high conversion rates for salespeople who send cupcakes as gifts How a gluten sensitivity during her pregnancy drove Melissa to finally work on developing a gluten-free cupcake, and the plans to develop vegan options Melissa’s passion for sustainability and protecting the environment, and how the company has refined its products and packaging to utilize less waste and to use recycled paper and plastic products to lessen their impact on the planet Why Melissa believes the message of her brand is to see challenges as opportunities to learn and grow, and not to fall into the trap of self-loathing and feeling defeated, and how this viewpoint is embraced and encouraged within the company Melissa shares the backstory behind their campaign to give away 100,000 cupcakes in the name of love in response to the 2016 election How Melissa leads by example as a mother to her two children, and how she tries to instill the values that have made her successful in life on to the next generation The unique opportunities and inspirations New York City offers, and why it’s the only place Baked by Melissa could have started How Melissa met her husband, then a bartender and now her co-product developer, on the first day Baked by Melissa opened as a pickup window at Cafe Bari Plus, Melissa brings in some of her favorite Baked by Melissa offerings as well as some of her favorite snacks, and offers an insight into how she comes up with new recipes!
