We start our journey around the Premier League in the geographical North not just of England but also, appropriately enough, of the Premier League itself. Last season, Manchester City managed what few other teams have managed in Premier League history: winning back to back titles in the division.  In Pep Guardiola’s three years at the club, Manchester City have become something of a cheat code. This season, they picked up all of the domestic trophies available to them. Only the Champions League eludes Guardiola.  But where the on-pitch is going swimmingly, the off-pitch leaves a little more to be desired. As Manchester City have made the Premier League Top Six less competitive, there have been increasingly concerning stories about the mechanisms by which this success has happened coming out in the press.  What does this mean for Manchester City fandom? Are City effectively unbeatable? And does it even matter?  Joining us on this episode is one of the biggest names in the world of Manchester City punditry. Nico Morales is a freelance journalist whose work has been featured on The Ringer, The Athletic, Howler Magazine, StatsBomb, FanSided and his own medium.

Looking for an Idiom - Simplicity and Complexity in Football

Morons

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 7, 2017 50:58

In 1965, the football writer Brian Glanville wrote an article about the state of British sports journalism. At the outset of the piece, he distinguished between two forms of sports journalism within the British context: the ‘more sensitive popular writer’ who ‘knows that almost every piece he writes is a self-betrayal, a selling out to the cruel machine which has produced him’ and ‘the quality writer’ who is ‘writing for an informed minority when, given the wide reference of his subject, he should be speaking to the generality’. ‘What is wholly lacking’, he writes, ‘is an idiom which will throw a bridge across the two cultures, avoiding, on the one hand, bathos, which is the nemesis of ‘good’ sports writing, and on the other stylised vulgarity, the nemesis of the popular school.’ Fifty years later and that bridge remains for the most part undiscovered: the British sports writer still finds themselves looking for an idiom. In the course of this podcast series, we are going to join in this search for an idiom. Bringing together specialists from around the world, we will take on the topics that are often ignored about the way the game is thought about, spoken about and played. Be it the epistemology of scouting, the creation and preservation of narrative, or the shadow world of capital that underpins the global game, each episode will seek to bring to light some aspect of the beautiful game and raise it to the level of scrutiny. In this episode, we’re talking about the ideas of simplicity and complexity in football. Joining us on the show is Nico Morales. Nico is a freelance journalist and host of the Weekly Rondo podcast. His work has been featured on NBCSN and he currently writes the occasional piece for ESD analysis and his own medium. We’re also joined by Nathan Clark. Nathan is a Spurs fan, a tactics writer, a video analyst and occasional numbers dabbler.

It has become something of a received wisdom within the present day that the mainstream media exist as the pinnacle of what is possible in sports journalism. Whilst it is not in our interest to reject this assumption, here at A Team of John O’Sheas we believe that some of the most perceptive insight regarding the top teams in the country comes from the fans themselves. In the course of this podcast series, we will be bringing together some of the most influential fans from across the Premier League to give you the low-down on the teams that they watch week in, week out. We’ll look back over the season just gone, try to get a handle on the transfer activity that rumbles on through the summer months, and look forwards to the next season which, as always, seems to creep up on us with ever increasing speed. In this episode, we’re back on the south coast and the ever growing enclave of Premier League sides. Southampton, along with Portsmouth, were the original purveyors of south coast Premier League sides. Yet where both fell away from the top division for a while, it is only Southampton who have made it back. Becoming the prototype for football clubs seeking to achieve mid-table security during the nascence of New Football, Southampton are often spoken about with a misty-eyed idealism by fans of clubs hovering above the relegation zone. Yet all is not hunky-dory in the land of fleece sweaters and ice cream cones. For the sellers club, you live by the move, you die by the move. A litany of departures have flowed through Southampton squad, making it seem more like an airport terminal at times. And it is not simply the players, it seems impossible for Saints to hold onto a manager for more than a year these days. With Claude Puel only lasting the obligatory year, Southampton are now headed up by Mauricio Pelligrino. For many of the fans, this cyclicality is tiring. The question on everyone’s lips, then is: will Pelligrino keep the club in its annual orbit? Or is this the season where they will finally break the curve? Joining us today are two familiar faces from the world of football media: Alex Stewart and Nico Morales. Alex is a creative consultant for uMAXit football, writing tactics and stats pieces. He writes regularly about Football Manager with Iain Macintosh, and has also been published in The Guardian, The Blizzard, and on the BBC. Nico is a freelance journalist and host of the Weekly Rondo podcast. His work has been featured on NBCSN and he currently writes the occasional piece for ESD analysis and his own medium.

In this episode, we’re heading back to the city in which we opened this podcast series: Manchester. Set in the heart of the North of the country, Manchester boasts two sides both alike in dignity. However, this has not always been the case: less than twenty years ago, City dropped into the third tier of English football. A few changes of ownership later and the club are now back at the top of the highest division of English football with a couple of Premier League titles under their belts. Of course, it is fairly unlikely Manchester City would have been able to achieve this recent success without the handy financial backing of Sheikh Mansour. This gives Manchester City the curious privilege of having been both a “sleeping giant” and a “plastic club” within recent memory. But this ambiguity of identity is what make City so interesting: even after an extended period of time back in the Premier League, the club are still coming to terms with how to express itself. On the field it is no different: a new manager touted to be amongst the best in the world had what can only be described as a disappointing season. Will the next season see City finally adopting a coherent personality? Or will they continue to drift? Joining us on this episode is one of the biggest names in the world of Manchester City punditry. Nico Morales is a freelance journalist and host of the Weekly Rondo podcast. His work has been featured on NBCSN and he currently writes the occasional piece for ESD analysis and his own medium.
