In this episode of the Bioactive Podcast, Dr. Riley Kirk sits down with Dr. Rick Pescatore, board-certified emergency physician, Editor-in-Chief of Emergency Medicine News, and founder of BellyMD, for a fascinating deep dive into the gut-brain connection and what it means for cannabis users and patients dealing with unexplained digestive symptoms. Dr. Pescatore explains how the gut and brain communicate through the vagus nerve, why the gut has been called the “second brain,” and how genetics, diet, gut bacteria, inflammation, and cannabis can all influence this complex system. The conversation also explores cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome (CHS) and why understanding CHS requires looking beyond cannabis alone and considering the broader gut-brain system. We also get into GLP-1 medications and gut-brain medicine, nausea and vomiting, microbiome health, micronutrient deficiencies, vitamin B1 (thiamine), magnesium, and whether personalized health data could help us better understand why someone feels unwell. Dr. Pescatore shares how emerging tools, including phenomic data, wearable technology, AI, and the Menome platform, could help patients identify patterns that traditional medicine may overlook. We also discuss cannabis and the gut microbiome, CHS, thiamine deficiency, antibiotics and gut health, personalized medicine, patient autonomy, and the future of gut-brain healthcare. In this episode, we explore: - What is the gut-brain axis and how does the gut communicate with the brain? - Why does the gut have such a major role in neurotransmitters and brain health? - What does the gut microbiome have to do with anxiety, depression, and other conditions? - What is cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome (CHS), and how does it fit into gut-brain health? - Could underlying gut-brain dysfunction contribute to cannabis-related symptoms? - How do GLP-1 medications affect the gut-brain axis? - What role do vitamin B1, magnesium, and micronutrients play in gut-brain health? - Can microbiome testing and wearable data help personalize healthcare? - Could AI help patients better understand their own health? - What does the future of personalized gut-brain medicine look like? This is a conversation about cannabis, medicine, the microbiome, nutrition, neuroscience, personalized health, and the emerging science connecting them all. Scott Pescatore, Executive VP of the Rare Diseases Business at Recordati, is focused on rare and ultra-orphan diseases with high unmet needs by acquiring promising compounds from other companies and advancing them through development and approval. An example is the company's drug Isturisa, acquired from Novartis, which is an FDA-approved effective treatment for patients with Cushing syndrome, a rare endocrine condition. Raising awareness of rare diseases among physicians, patients, and the general public is a priority for Recordati to improve diagnosis rates and clinical trial participation, and to encourage more research and funding in the rare disease space. Scott explains, "We have two primary divisions at Recordati. One is our specialty primary care business, and the other is the rare disease business, which I have the honor and privilege to look after. And we have a very simple sort of work ethic or business mantra, if you will, and that's focused on the few. And we really dedicate ourselves to focusing on disease areas and patient groups and therapeutic areas that have a high unmet need and really low or limited options for patients. And really focusing on diseases and areas that are rare and considered ultra-orphan by the definitions in the US, where really there's a very small patient base. And that's where we began back in 2007, when the rare disease business was formed. And that's really what our focus has been since then. And we continue to focus on this segment of the market." "So Isturisa is really a fantastic product. We acquired this product through a deal we did with Novartis Pharmaceuticals back in 2019, and this product has FDA approval for patients who have endogenous hypercortisolemia with Cushing syndrome. So it's quite a nasty disease, but it's a very efficacious product. The product is what's considered a cortisol inhibitor in the blocks in a particular enzyme to help normalize hypercortisolemia in patients with Cushing syndrome. And Cushing syndrome, for those who aren't familiar, is a rare endocrine condition that really has a significant impact on patients' quality of life, on the caregivers, on the families. And the indication I mentioned was supported by quite robust phase 3 trials." #Recordati #RareDisease #FocusedontheFew #CushingSyndrome #IMCD #CastlemansDisease recordati.com Download the transcript here

You know those episodes where you feel both called out and taken care of, all at once, yeah, this is one of those. In this conversation, we sit down with Dr Rick Pescatore, an ER doc who has seen way too many people show up sick from the plant they thought was helping them. He is deep in the trenches with Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome, CHS, and gut brain health, and he still actually respects and uses cannabis himself. This is harm reduction, not fear mongering. What CHS actually is, not the Facebook versionHow heavy, high potency use can flip cannabis from nausea relief into brutal, cyclic vomiting, stomach pain, hot shower obsession, and endless ER visits. Why this is showing up more nowWe talk concentrates, dabs, vapes, and how 80 percent THC products plus all day use is a very different game than your uncle's old school flower. How to tell if it might be CHS, not “a bad batch”Red flags, how long it usually takes to show up, what doctors look for, and why so many people get misdiagnosed with everything from gastritis to anxiety before someone finally says the word CHS. What “respecting the plant” actually looks likeFrequency, potency, tolerance breaks, why switching from constant dabs to more measured use can literally give people their life back, and how to think about your own risk without panic. Rick's gut brain work and BellyMDHow years in the ER pushed him into gut brain health, dismissed patients, and building BellyMD to actually support people with invisible gut issues, plus how that connects back to cannabis, stress, and CHS. A doctor who actually knows the cultureWe get into his own relationship with cannabis, how he keeps his use intentional, and why talking honestly about risk is one of the most pro cannabis things we can doBy the end, you are going to walk away with a clearer map of,Who is most at risk for CHSWhat early warning signs to stop ignoringHow to talk to your doctor without getting dismissedPractical ways to reduce your risk while still enjoying the plantThis episode is not medical advice, it is education so you can have a smarter conversation with your own doctor.https://shop.belly-md.com/Save on Dr Dabber with Code: Cannabisschool10Save on Storz & Bickel with Code : CannabisschoolSave on Santa Cruz Shredder with Code: CSP10Save on Bomb Erigs with Code: CSPScore 100 on your test

In-office milling and 3D printing are cutting-edge technologies. But, like any major investment, these tools come with their own set of questions. Is this the right time to spend the money? What kind of volume do I need to make this investment profitable? Are there any ongoing costs and do I have the staff to manage these machines? Today, we'll be talking to Dr. Chris Pescatore, who will give his candid viewpoint on the pros and cons of these in-office technologies. Dr. Pescatore is general dentist for over 30 years who maintains a full-time practice dedicated exclusively to aesthetic restorative dentistry in Danville, California. Federal Tech Podcast: Listen and learn how successful companies get federal contracts
Here we are in the spring of 2025, and the headline news is that the federal government is removing tech staff; at the same time, reports are coming in of thousands of unfilled cybersecurity positions across the government. Today, we sit down with a self-proclaimed “Cybersecurity Lifer” who will give the perspective of the SANS Institute on this dilemma. John Pescatore has been involved in federal cybersecurity since 1978. When he examines our current situation, he gives his opinion on training, skill level, and legislation that is being considered to address many of these issues. He mentions recent SANS studies that have suggested the issue is less about the number of openings than about finding individuals with a specific skill set required for a federal role. He discusses the evolution of cybersecurity training from hands-on courses to community college programs and the importance of practical experience. Pescatore also discusses AI's role in cybersecurity, noting its limitations and the need for domain expertise. He emphasizes the importance of rotating staff roles and providing continuous training to retain talent in federal agencies.
In this episode of Better Buildings for Humans, host Joe Menchefski welcomes Peter Pescatore, Global Commercial Lead at Cabot Corporation, for a deep dive into one of the most fascinating materials in building science: aerogel. Often called "frozen smoke," this super-light, ultra-insulating material has captivated engineers and designers for decades—but is still flying under the radar in mainstream construction.Peter breaks down how aerogel works on a microscopic level, its unique ability to diffuse daylight while achieving R values up to four times higher than traditional insulation (with a U-value as low as 0.28 W/m²K), and its surprisingly diverse use cases—from heritage building retrofits to electric vehicle batteries. They also explore the role aerogel can play in the circular economy and its fire-resistant properties. If you're passionate about next-gen materials, thermal comfort, or simply want to future-proof your designs, this one's a must-listen.CONTACT: https://www.linkedin.com/company/cabot-corporationhttps://www.facebook.com/CabotCorporation/https://twitter.com/CabotCorphttps://www.youtube.com/@cabotcorphttps://vimeo.com/cabotcorporation https://www.linkedin.com/in/peter-pescatore-ba2baa/Where To Find Us:https://bbfhpod.advancedglazings.com/www.advancedglazings.comhttps://www.linkedin.com/company/better-buildings-for-humans-podcastwww.linkedin.com/in/advanced-glazings-ltd-848b4625https://twitter.com/bbfhpodhttps://twitter.com/Solera_Daylighthttps://www.instagram.com/bbfhpod/https://www.instagram.com/advancedglazingsltdhttps://www.facebook.com/AdvancedGlazingsltd

Show Notes: https://wetflyswing.com/707 Presented by: Pescador on the Fly, FishHound Expeditions, Four Wheel Campers Sponsors: https://wetflyswing.com/sponsors In this episode, we are thrilled to have Mitch and Aldo, the dynamic duo behind the renowned So Fly Fishing podcast, one of Canada's top fly fishing shows. Join us as Mitch and Aldo take us on a journey through Southern Ontario's stunning waters and beyond. They'll share captivating stories from their podcast, offering insights into their favorite trips and the incredible guests they've hosted. Whether you're planning your next big adventure or simply dreaming of the perfect fly fishing escape, Mitch and Aldo are here to provide inspiration and expert advice. Episode Chapters with Mitch Duesling and Aldo Pescatore-Tardioli on the So Fly Fishing Podcast 1:28 - I had the pleasure to guest on their podcast in April last year about starting and sustaining a fly fishing podcast. 3:44 - We started our chat by getting into their creative journey in the podcasting space. Mitch reflects on the origins of their project, which began as an idea in 2015 and launched its first episode in January 2016. Mitch notes the rise of the creator culture, observing that even young family members aspire to be creators now. Aldo recalls joining the podcast as a guest on an episode and later becoming a co-host. The team experienced a shift in their production schedule during the Covid lockdown, initially increasing their output to one episode per week due to having more free time. Eventually, they settled into a rhythm of releasing two episodes per month, which they find to be a balanced and sustainable approach. 6:52 - We talk about fishing in Ontario. Mitch and Aldo discuss how Ontario offers a wide range of fishing opportunities due to its large size and diverse ecosystems, from Southern Ontario to the far north. They note that while they have traveled globally, Ontario remains a prime fishing destination for them. Aldo mentions the multi-species fishing opportunities, including smallmouth bass, pike, and musky, particularly in Ottawa. He also remarks on the less populated areas of the province, which offer remote fishing experiences. 9:51 - Aldo shares that time when a listener's invitation led them to Texas for redfishing, highlighting the exciting and memorable experiences that result from this kind of trips. Both Mitch and Aldo emphasize the importance of being open to opportunities and seizing them when they arise. 13:29 - Mitch discusses the shift from audio-only content to video podcasts on YouTube. He notes that more people are engaging with their content on YouTube, likely due to the visual component that video offers. Despite this shift, creating video content presents challenges, such as ensuring guests have the necessary technology to participate visually. 16:00 - We discuss the excitement of having well-known guests on the show, particularly those outside the fly fishing community. They recount a near-success in booking actor Liam Neeson, who declined their invitation but showed interest initially. They dream of featuring other famous personalities, focusing solely on their fishing experiences rather than their celebrity status. 18:39 - I mention our episodes with Yvon Chouinard and Henry Winkler. 19:13 - The hosts discuss their experiences with receiving negative comments or "hate mail" after podcast episodes. Mitch and Aldo acknowledge that early on, they received criticism for swearing too much, which they have since reduced. 21:19 - Aldo and Mitch reveal how they plan and produce their episodes. They rely on a network of sponsors, fly shops, guides, and local connections to secure guests, aiming to maintain a balance between international content and local stories from Ontario. 24:25 - We ask them about their plans for this year. One of the highlights is a trip to Belize in February, where they'll be exploring Ambergris Caye and San Pedro with a mix of DIY adventures and guided tours. Another major milestone for the team is the upcoming 200th episode of their podcast, which they are thrilled about. 26:28 - They share about an annual event called the Southern Ontario Trout Opener Social in April. It serves as a fundraiser aiming to support local river conservation efforts. The event features a cocktail party setup with around 150 attendees, including tying competitions where participants can win a day with a guide. The event has been running for four years and was designed to attract both fishing enthusiasts and non-fishers. 30:25 - Our conversation discusses potential guests and episodes for this year. Aldo expresses a strong interest in having Andy Mill on the show. He admires Andy's work and has been an avid listener of the Mill House podcast, which captures the allure of saltwater fishing. 35:33 - We dig into Aldo's first time travelling to Belize. Mitch also shares his favorite fishing trip so far which was in a river in Northern Ontario because of the available fish species and wild life there. 45:14 - Aldo raises a concern about the potential apprehension of having earlier episodes of their podcast accessible to listeners, particularly if they might not reflect the current quality or style. 46:34 - They share their favorite podcasts. Mitch highlights "Design Matters" with Debbie Millman as his favorite podcast. He praised Debbie's interviewing style, noting her ability to keep conversations engaging and forward-moving. Aldo recommends "Pivot" with Kara Swisher and Scott Galloway. He explains that the podcast explores the intersection of business, technology, and everyday life. Aldo appreciates the hosts' approach, as they avoid talking down to listeners. 49:22 - Mitch shares the inspiration behind starting a podcast, highlighting his love for radio and conversation. His interest sparked from listening to "The Ricky Gervais Show," which he considers one of the best podcasts due to its humor and engaging content. 51:40 - We ask for the story about the title of their podcast, So Fly. 52:48 - We share a story about our family's recent trip to Anchorage, Alaska with the team of Fishhound Expeditions. We travelled in our amazing pop up camper from Four Wheel Campers. 56:17 - We ask some random questions like their go-to YouTube channel and podcast platform. Show Notes: https://wetflyswing.com/707
