In Psychobabble, licensed psychotherapist Joe Nucci argues that too many of us are self-diagnosing, improperly deploying therapy-speak, and even coaching others to engage in harmful activities under the guise of “self-care.”Nucci dismantles 40 popular misconceptions, such as:– Everyone needs to go to therapy.– Your feelings are credible.– People gaslight you when they disagree.– Mindfulness is good for everyone.– Everyone has trauma.– The reason you can't focus is ADHD.This dangerous misinformation encourages well-meaning individuals to make consequential life decisions based on false beliefs, half-truths, and the advice of unlicensed armchair experts. It is time for a professional to call this out. Nucci replaces these myths with liberating truths that can help readers avoid misinformation, navigate important philosophical debates, and better maneuver their own mental health journeys. He shares client examples and evidence-based psychological theory, and draws from reputable studies and research.TikTok influencers and “life coaches” create viral videos telling people to cut off their problematic parents, and are cheered on by millions of followers. Recent divorcees proudly declare on Instagram that they are finally healing from their “narcissistic” ex-partner, even though you get the sense they can't actually define that word. Teenage “mental health advocates” lament the struggles of living with autism, but then subtly add that their condition is “self-diagnosed.” It is time for a professional to call out the misinformation and absurdity.Psychobabble is a must-read book for anyone who values mental health and cares about others.Support the Show: Patreon.com/PreacherBoys✖️✖️✖️If you or someone you know has experienced abuse, visit courage365.org/need-help✖️✖️✖️CONNECT WITH THE SHOW:preacherboyspodcast.comhttps://www.youtube.com/@PreacherBoyshttps://www.facebook.com/preacherboysdoc/https://twitter.com/preacherboysdochttps://www.instagram.com/preacherboyspodhttps://www.tiktok.com/@preacherboyspodTo connect with a community that shares the Preacher Boys Podcast's mission to expose abuse in the IFB, join the OFFICIAL Preacher Boys Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1403898676438188/✖️✖️✖️The content presented in this video is for informational and educational purposes only. In this episode of Relationship Advice, Colter and Cayla sit down with therapist and author Joe Nucci to unpack themes from his book Psychobabble. They dive into common therapy-related myths—like the idea that “everyone needs therapy” or that “more emotional intimacy is always better”—and explore how cultural messages about mental health can sometimes oversimplify or distort deeper truths. The conversation blends humor and insight as they challenge overused self-help tropes, advocate for nuance, and discuss how real growth happens both inside and outside of therapy. Main Talking Points: - Myth: “Everyone needs therapy” — therapy is beneficial but not always necessary - Limited therapist availability and mental health as a social justice issue - Myth: “More emotional intimacy = healthier relationship” — intimacy looks different for everyone - Dangers of over-standardizing “emotional health” in relationships - Therapy as preparation vs. real-world relational growth - Attraction patterns, emotional awareness, and learning through experience Joe's Links: - Instagram - Website Give Me Discounts! In this episode, Joe Nucci explores what it means to go beyond the buzzwords and how to talk about mental health without losing its meaning. He explains how mental health language has become less useful as it's gained popularity, and how clinical terms meant for specific purposes have drifted into everyday speech until they describe everything, and therefore, nothing. The words we use create the world we see, and once you start viewing yourself through a diagnostic lens, it can be hard to see in any other way. One of the most powerful takeaways from this conversation is that the value of a psychological term lies not only in its accuracy, but in its usefulness, and sometimes the language we use builds a cage instead of offering clarity. Exciting News!!! Coming in March, 2026, my new book, How a Little Becomes a Lot: The Art of Small Changes for a More Meaningful Life is now available for pre-orders! Key Takeaways: The popularization of mental health language and concepts. The phenomenon of “psychobabble” and its implications. The concept of “concept creep” in mental health terminology. The importance of accurate mental health diagnoses and their clinical usefulness. The balance between clinical accuracy and practical application in mental health discussions. The complexities of people pleasing and its underlying motivations. The overuse and misapplication of the term “trauma” in contemporary discourse. The distinction between normal emotional responses and clinical disorders. The role of language in shaping perceptions of mental health. The need for nuanced, context-sensitive approaches to mental health treatment and understanding. For full show notes, click here! On this week's episode of The Lo Life, Lo sits down with psychologist and author Joe Nucci for an eye-opening conversation that cuts through the noise of viral “therapy talk” on social media. Nucci's new book Psychobabble: Viral Mental Health Myths & the Truths to Set You Free tackles some of the most misunderstood psychological buzzwords dominating TikTok and Instagram—from gaslighting and love bombing to narcissism, psychopathy, and beyond. Together, Lo and Nucci pull back the curtain on the labels we throw around too casually and reveal what the science actually says. The conversation goes deeper into relationships, toxic patterns, and the difference between traits and true diagnoses, offering clarity for anyone who's ever wondered where internet myths end and real mental health begins. They also discuss the process of finding a therapist who's right for you—why it's like dating, the questions you should ask, and how to build a relationship that leads to genuine healing. Thoughtful, relatable, and packed with insights, this episode will change the way you see mental health—and maybe even the way you see yourself.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Are we drowning in psychobabble? In this episode, AJ and Johnny sit down with psychotherapist and author Joe Nucci to debunk the viral mental health myths dominating social media. From the overuse of “trauma” and “gaslighting” to the idea that everyone needs therapy, Joe exposes how pop-psychology has blurred the lines between real treatment and trendy jargon. They dig into why therapy has become a status symbol, how diagnoses are being misused as identity labels, and the dangers of weaponizing terms like narcissism in dating and relationships. Joe also explains what gaslighting actually is (and why it can't happen in a single argument), and how social media is encouraging unhealthy identity-seeking through mental health labels. Whether you've rolled your eyes at overused buzzwords online—or wondered if you're guilty of using them yourself—this conversation will help you cut through the noise, spot real red flags, and separate genuine mental health wisdom from misleading myths. This week, Scott speaks with psychotherapist and writer Joe Nucci, whose work tackles the intersection of mental health, misinformation, and pop psychology. Joe has built a large following by debunking viral myths and bringing nuance to conversations that are too often oversimplified online. Together, they dive into his new book, Psychobabble: Viral Mental Health Myths and the Truths to Set You Free. From the overuse of labels like “narcissist” to the assumption that mindfulness is good for everyone, Joe challenges widely accepted but misleading ideas. They also take on bigger cultural narratives—like whether everyone has trauma or whether everyone should be in therapy. This conversation sheds light on how misinformation spreads, why it matters, and what we can do to ground our understanding of mental health in science and compassion. Joe Nucci has gone viral for his straight-talking posts about mental health and trauma. While it's no bad thing that we've become more comfortable talking about mental health and that struggling with mental health issues is now far less taboo than it was a decade ago, there are elements of the conversation that are unhelpful. Being defined by your mental health doesn't afford you the ability to make changes, progress and move beyond a diagnosis and it's this which Joe is challenging. When I saw his posts, I knew he had to be welcomed onto the show to expand on his position and explain how he positively sees the conversation changing and moving forward. To join the Facebook group for the podcast click here >> The Emma Guns Show Forum. To follow me on social media >> Twitter | Instagram.Watch clips from the podcast >> Youtube | The Emma Guns ShowSign up for my newsletter here >> Newsletter.Subscribe now.
