In the late 1970s, no book turned baseball on its ear more than the Bronx Zoo, written by then-current Yankee reliever Sparky Lyle. That book was co-written by longtime author and baseball historian Peter Golenbock. Golenbock has written more than sixty books, including ten New York Times best sellers. In addition to the Bronx Zoo, his best-selling books on baseball include Dynasty: The New York Yankees, 1949-1964; Bums: An Oral History of the Brooklyn Dodgers; Balls (with Graig Nettles); Amazin': The Miraculous History of New York's Most Beloved Baseball Team; Idiot: Beating “The Curse” and Enjoying the Game of Life (with Johnny Damon), and Valentine's Way (With Bobby Valentine). His newest book is called Whispers of the Gods is his newest book, where he relays his conversations with stars from baseball's past, including Roger Maris and Ted Williams. In this episode, he continues to share his expert insights into what he considers the sport to still be America's favorite pastime, especially during the current playoff season. Golenbock discusses the recent Aaron Judge home run chase, his belief that Barry Bonds is the true home run champion, and why he always rooted for an American League team.
Peter Golenbock has written more books about baseball than just about anybody. He's also written about basketball, football, stock car racing and popular culture. His account of the New York Yankees' 1978 World Championship season, The Bronx Zoo, written with Sparky Lyle, was a runaway best-seller. Coming on the heels of his own history of the Yankees, Dynasty, that book helped to establish Peter as one of the leading chroniclers of our national pastime. He would go on to collaborate on books with Yankee legends Graig Nettles (Balls), Billy Martin (Number 1) and Ron Guidry (Guidry), and to write comprehensive team histories of the Chicago Cubs (Wrigleyville), the New York Mets (Amazin'), the Brooklyn Dodgers (Bums) and the St. Louis Cardinals and Browns (The Spirit of St. Louis). His latest book, Whispers of the Gods: Tales from Baseball's Golden Age, Told by the Men Who Played It, collects the musings and reminiscences of some of the game's near-greats, and forgotten greats, in the tradition of Lawrence Ritter's The Glory of Their Times. Peter is also the co-author of a new memoir from former New York Mets manager Bobby Valentine (Valentine's Way), as well as books written with Hollywood legend Tony Curtis (American Prince) and noted criminal defense attorney Jose Baez (Presumed Guilty), who successfully defended Casey Anthony in a sensation murder trial that captured worldwide attention. Join us as we talk with Peter about his unlikely path to collaborative writing, his lifelong fascination with the game of baseball, and his determination to get to the heart of every story he sets out to cover. What we're throwing down on the Table this week is an interview and discussion with author and historian Peter Golenbock about his new book titled "Whispers of the Gods." The book is an amazing reading experience that highlights storytelling of baseball greats from the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s. Peter truly captured the essence of baseball through the eyes of many players who touched the game in some way shape or form. It was an amazing discussion! But first, we dove into the current situation surrounding Major League Baseball and how games are now being canceled for the upcoming 2022 season. (approx. 1:45)We then shifted course and discussed the new Embiid-Harden Era that we've witnessed early on and how the Philadelphia 76ers are now a true powerhouse in the Eastern Conference. (approx. 9:30)From there, we touched on the Flyers by talking about what this organization should do with defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen. Should they re-sign him? Should they trade him? (approx. 16:10)Of course, we had to get into some Eagles talk as free agency is almost upon us. Which free agents should the Eagles try to keep, and which ones should go? (approx. 23:05)What we threw down on the Table was a great discussion with Peter Golenbock who wrote the book "Whispers of the Gods". How and why baseball storytelling has been critical to our being as sports fans. How will today's corps of amazing baseball players tell their stories in the future? Plus, stories of interacting with some baseball greats. All of this and much more this week on the Table! Episode #117 features two incredibly entertaining, returning guests, Bobby Valentine and Emily Detwiler. Bobby Valentine or as most people call him, Bobby V is one of the most loved, well known, respected, colorful, and celebrated ambassadors of the game. His life has been an incredible journey filled with wonderful stories which he shares in astonishing detail in the book, Valentine's Way: My Adventurous Life and Times, coauthored with Peter Golenbock. Bobby V is a former Major League Baseball player and manager, managing teams in both the United States and Japan. Many people know him for one game in which he was ejected for speaking his mind and then sitting in the dugout wearing a disguise, but that is a mere drop in a very large bucket of a life filled with special people and events. He has worked for a future United States President, been a restaurateur, a champion ballroom dancer, an ESPN baseball analyst, and managed the New York Mets in the 2000 Subway Series against the crosstown rival New York Yankees. Emily Detwiler is the CEO of the Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS) and a baseball fan, especially of any team on which her brother-in-law, pitcher, Ross Detwiler is playing. The past couple of years have not been easy for an organization that relies heavily on barbecue competitions in the United States as well as throughout the world and yet, Emily has managed to elevate the KCBS back to the lofty success level it once achieved. We are joined by our friend, Doug Scheiding as we discuss barbecue with a small amount of baseball thrown in.We recommend you go to Fifth & Cherry, https://fifthandcherry.com for wonderful cutting boards and http://www.baseballbbq.com for grill tools and clothing for barbecue and baseball fans and the Pandemic Baseball Book Club, https://www.pbbclub.com to find many of the wonderful books we have featured as well as some additional swag.We conclude the show with the beautiful song, "Ace and Bobo" from the musician, Dave Dresser and the poet, Shel Krakofsky. We truly appreciate our listeners and hope that all of you are staying safe.If you would like to contact the show, we would love to hear from you.Call the show: (516) 855-8214Email: baseballandbbq@gmail.comTwitter: @baseballandbbqInstagram: baseballandbarbecueYouTube: baseball and bbqWebsite: https://baseballandbbq.weebly.comFacebook: baseball and bbq

Spring training is finally under way, and we celebrate the National Pastime with a return visit to the 1989-90 curiosity known as the Senior Professional Baseball Association – with one of its few dedicated chroniclers, prolific sports author Peter Golenbock (The Forever Boys). The brainchild of real estate developer (and former college player) Jim Morley, the SPBA was envisioned as a kind of Senior PGA golf-type circuit for ex-Major League Baseball players aged 35 and older (32+ for catchers), played at Spring training facilities throughout Florida during the traditional baseball off-season. Featuring former All-Star player/labor pioneer Curt Flood as commissioner – and a talent roster that included future Hall of Fame players and managers, Major League batting champions, and Cy Young-winning pitching aces – the “Senior League” drew in big names and sizable media attention, but minuscule crowds. The eight inaugural teams — the Bradenton Explorers, Fort Myers Sun Sox, Gold Coast Suns, Orlando Juice, St. Lucie Legends, St. Petersburg Pelicans, West Palm Beach Tropics, and Winter Haven Super Sox — averaged just 921 fans per game, roughly half of what Morley and his fellow owners envisioned. The Dick Williams-managed Tropics were the league’s 72-game regular season leaders, but it was the Pelicans – the team Golenbock just happened to be following for Forever Boys – who won the step-laddered post-season playoffs to capture what ultimately became the SPBA’s first- and last-ever champion. Plan your own baseball Spring Training getaway at VisitArizona.com!

He also co-wrote Idiot with then-Boston Red Sox player Johnny Damon; Bats, with former Mets manager Davey Johnson; Thunder and Lightning, with hockey all-star Phil Esposito; and several racing books, including NASCAR Confidential and American Zoom. You can see an entire list of Golenbock’s books at his Web site, www.GolenbockBooks.com. He has also started writing a blog at http://petergolenbock.blogspot.com/. Despite his impeccable credentials, Golenbock recently found himself in the news on the heels of a book he did not write, O. J. Simpson’s quasi-confessional, If I Did It. By coincidence. Golenbock’s latest book, 7: The Mickey Mantle Novel, a story that takes liberties with the real life of his old friend and former Bronx bomber/slugger, Mickey Mantle, was also due to be put out by Simpson’s publisher, Judith Regan. Here’s an excerpt from the book that appeared in Publisher’s Weekly - it describes a fictional encounter between Mantle and actress Marilyn Monroe: “Mickey enters her, going in nice and easy. The look on his face changes from excitement and pleasure to surprise and then disappointment. He waits for the yelling and screaming, waits for her to tell him how good it was, waits for an ‘ooh’ or an ‘ahh,’ any reaction at all, but no. While he works away at it, Marilyn just lies there staring at him with cold, accusing eyes.” In the storm that followed cancellation of Simpson’s book and Regan’s firing, Golenbock’s book was cancelled, too. But Golenbock’s book didn’t stay cancelled for long. It will be published on April 3, 2007, by Lions Press. I have asked Peter, who has been an acquaintance for many years, to join us today and talk about his controversial new book and his long career. Today's Guest: Peter Golenbock, sportswriter, George: The Little Rich Boy Who Built the Yankees Empire, Idiot , Balls, The Bronx Zoo, Bums: An Oral History of the Brooklyn Dodgers, Wild, High and Tight: The Life and Death of Billy Martin Mr. Media is recorded live before a studio audience – HEY! WAIT A MINUTE! I’ve always said that as a joke! Where did you people come from?… Oh, that’s right, we're on location for the first time at the fabulous Globe Coffee Lounge in the new new media capitol of the world… St. Petersburg, Florida! Mr. Media host Bob Andelman (L) and Peter Golenbock, live at the Globe Coffee Lounge, St. Petersburg, Florida Peter Golenbock is one of the most prolific writers I know or have ever heard of. His books could fill an entire shelf in your library – and maybe they already do. That’s the Golenbock name alongside Johnny Damon on Idiot, next to Sparky Lyle on The Bronx Zoo and with Graig Nettles on Balls. He went solo for Bums: An Oral History of the Brooklyn Dodgers, and Wild, High and Tight: The Life and Death of Billy Martin. More recently, he published George: The Little Rich Boy Who Built the Yankees Empire – about the late George Steinbrenner. You might also have heard about his only shot at “fiction” to date, 7: The Mickey Mantle Novel, in which we read tantalizing stories of The Mick’s trysts with women – including Marilyn Monroe. PETER GOLENBOCK audio excerpt: "7 was Mickey Mantle's life. If people didn't want to agree that was Mickey Mantle's life, they should have kept their mouths shut... Mickey would have loved this book. Mickey was who he was and he didn't make apologies for it." Ordered Presumed Guilty from Amazon.com by clicking on the book cover above! Just when people had him pegged as a guy who only wrote baseball books, Peter turned out an equally dazzling series of books about other sports, including Landry’s Boys and Cowboys Have Always Been My Heroes, about the Dallas Cowboys; NASCAR Encyclopedia, NASCAR Confidential and American Zoom; Personal Fouls about Coach Jim Valvano’s days at North Carolina State; and there was Go Gators! an oral history of Mr. Media’s alma mater. Peter Golenbock (Illustration: Charlie Andelman) There have even been two books with ties to St. Petersburg, his current city of residence: Forever Boys, about baseball’s short-lived senior league, and Thunder and Lightning, a memoir he wrote with Tampa Bay Lightning founder Phil Esposito. Did I mention he also found time to write In the Country of Brooklyn and helped the late actor Tony Curtis write his memoir, American Prince? Gosh, next time, I gotta get a guest who’s less accomplished. We’re almost out of time! Today's Guest: Sportswriter Peter Golenbock, author, George: The Poor Little Rich Boy Who Built the Yankee Empire, Growing Up NASCAR: Racing's Most Outrageous Promoter Tells All Order 'Growing Up NASCAR: Racing's Most Outrageous Promoter Tells All' by Peter Golenbock, available from Amazon.com by clicking on the book cover above! Sportswriter Peter Golenbock is one of my heroes, a guy I want to be like in many ways when I grow up. For now, however, I’ll settle for just being to call him a friend. The major characteristic I admire about Peter is his ability to be working constantly. He’s always writing a new book, always engaged in an envious research project. Actually, more than one. As a guy who also makes his living writing books, it drives me nuts. Let me give you an example. PETER GOLENBOCK podcast excerpt: "It looks to me like the Rays are going to win 90 games this year. The question is whether the Yankees and Red Sox are going to win more than 90 games. And, come August and September, are some of those older players going to break down? Is John Lackey going to have more arm trouble?" Order 'George: The Poor Little Rich Boy Who Built the Yankee Empire' by Peter Golenbock, available from Amazon.com by clicking on the book cover above! The first time Peter was on my show, he was promoting his hotly controversial first stab at Yankees history (officially, fiction), 7: The Mickey Mantle Novel. But while he was setting the New York media community on fire with wild tales of the Mick getting up to bat with Joe D’s gal, Marilyn Monroe, he was already hot at work with actor Tony Curtis on his autobiography and on a history of Brooklyn. When I had him back to talk about those books, he was chomping at the bit to talk about his George Steinbrenner biography. Today, I thought I’d have him on to talk about prospects for the 2010 baseball season, but it happens he has another new book out, Growing Up NASCAR, which he wrote with Humpy Wheeler, the long-time president of the Charlotte Motor Speedway, the inventor of both the All Star race, and night racing. Oh, and I should probably mention the just-released paperback editions of George, Dynasty and Balls. Today's Guest: Peter Golenbock, In The Country of Brooklyn, American Prince: A Memoir Order from Amazon.com by clicking the book above Order from Amazon.com by clicking the book above You Midwesterners may disagree, but I don’t think there is any single place in this country more representative of the soul of America than Brooklyn and New Jersey. And the fact that I was born in the former and raised in the latter doesn’t color my thinking at all. Both are cultural, ethnic and racial melting pots dating back to the earliest days of the original 13 colonies. But only one is featured as a world onto itself in a new book by my guest, Peter Golenbock. In The Country of Brooklyn is a remarkable trip through the history of one of the United States’ most vital geographic regions, one that has contribute to our nation in the fields of politics, culture, society and pretty much everything else that counts. But that’s not the only new book he has hitting bookstores today. Peter also helped actor Tony Curtis produce his autobiography, titled American Prince: A Memoir, and that is also available today. Two books published on the same day. Not bad, not bad at all! This is Peter’s second visit to Mr. Media; he was my guest in early 2007 when he published the controversial book, 7: The Mickey Mantle Novel. He is also someone I consider a friend. Today's Guest: Steven Gore, novelist, White Ghost: A Graham Gage Thriller, Final Target, Power Blind Watch this exclusive Mr. Media interview with novelist Steven Gore by clicking on the video player above! Mr. Media is recorded live before a studio audience full of cancer survivors who could use a new hero… in the NEW new media capital of the world… St. Petersburg, Florida! [ White Ghost: A Graham Gage Thriller by Steven Gore. Order now by clicking on the book cover above! Whether San Francisco private eye Graham Gage solves his latest case or not, his odds of lining up his next one are looking pretty thin. Graham Gage has non-Hodgkins lymphoma. Cancer. And it’s killing him. STEVEN GORE podcast excerpt: “Graham Gage is more cerebral, more analytical (than Harlan Donnally). I think that made him a better character for this subject (coping with a late stage cancer diagnosis).” Gage, the hard-working, world-traveling, great-friend-to-have-in-a-crisis hero of three previous novels by Steven Gore, stands tall in his fourth thrilling adventure story, White Ghost. But is it his last hurrah? Order Final Target by Steven Gore from Amazon.com by clicking on the book cover above! I’m not tellin’. But what I will share – and what Gore himself will likely describe in moments – is that Gage’s illness came to him organically. That’s right – author Gore had it first. But Gore, a real American character, has kept his cancer at arm’s reach for 15 years. I’m not sure the same can be said about Gage. Mostly because I haven’t read to the end yet. I didn’t want to spoil the conclusion by accident for anyone. Order Power Blind: A Graham Gage Thriller by Steven Gore from Amazon.com by clicking on the book cover above! STEVEN GORE podcast excerpt: "Some novelists rely too much on superpowers. The perfect memory or perfect recall. Nobody has that." White Ghost is full of globe-trotting, heroin-smuggling, chemotherapy-laced Gage intrigue. Steven Gore has become one of my favorite American novelists, a point I can prove by saying this is his fifth appearance on Mr. Media, tying him overall with only sportswriter Peter Golenbock. That’s how much I like his work. Key interview moments: • 5:25 Gore discusses how some novelists rely too much on “superpowers” to get their heroes out of a jam"; • 16:10 Gore reveals his own angoing, personal struggles with a diagnosis of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma back in 2001; • 39:20 An explanation of why Gore afflicted his private investigator character, Graham Gage, with cancer rather than his lawyer character, Harlan Donnally.
