Why did Queen Elizabeth I look like she was auditioning for a role in a ghost story? In this episode of Join the Docs, our dynamic duo, Professor Jonathan Sackier and Dr. Nigel Guest, take a spook-tacular yet enlightening plunge into the world of historical beauty practices. They shine a spotlight on the iconic Queen Elizabeth I, whose beauty regimen had her looking as white as a sheet twith an approach as dangerous as a game of dodgeball with porcupines. The societal preference for pale skin back then was no joke, but the makeup they used certainly was—Venetian ceruse, a concoction so toxic it would make a chemistry teacher cry. This lead-laden face paint was the Elizabethan equivalent of playing Russian roulette with your health.Ever wondered what happens when you mix pore judgement with a dash of danger? Well, Professor Sackier and Doctor Guest are here to spill the creams—or rather, the ceruse. They dive into the health risks associated with these historical beauty practices, painting a vivid picture of lead poisoning that's more terrifying than a haunted house. While the ghostly pallor was deemed attractive to our ancestors, we wonder if the lead-induced cognitive impairment was valued, making it clear that looking like a porcelain doll came at a steep price. And let's not forget the long-term effects, like infertility, which was nature's way of saying, "Maybe don't put poison on your face."How did people back then not realise they were essentially turning themselves into walking, talking toxic waste dumps? The Docs, with their signature blend of humour and expertise, unravel this mystery while keeping you in stitches (metaphorically). They highlight the absurdity of historical beauty standards, making you grateful for modern skincare routines that don't involve hazardous materials.By the end of the episode, you'll be convinced that no amount of societal pressure is worth risking your health. So, next time you reach for that new beauty product, remember the powderful lessons of yesteryear and choose health over hazardous habits—or you might just makeup your mind the hard way!—--DISCLAIMER: The views and opinions expressed on Join the Docs are those of Dr. Nigel Guest, Jonathan Sackier and other people on our show. Have you ever wondered how a deadly toxin found in spoiled sausages could end up being the secret behind wrinkle-free foreheads? In this rib-tickling episode of Join the Docs, our dynamic duo, Professor Jonathan Sackier and Doctor Nigel Guest, take you on a wild ride through the history and medical marvels of botulinum toxin, affectionately known as Botox. The Docs kick things off by tracing its origins back to the days of the Roman Empire, where improperly prepared sausages were more than just a culinary faux pas—they were a lethal hazard! With a sprinkle of humour, the hosts reveal their own sausage preferences, from bratwurst to bangers, and even throw in a few sausage puns that are sure to make you "wurst" with laughter.Did you know that Botox isn't just for keeping those pesky crow's feet at bay? In a clinical but not cynical twist, Sackier and Guest dive into the surprising medical applications of Botox that go way beyond the realm of vanity. They discuss how this toxin, once feared for its deadly potential, is now a miracle worker in treating muscle spasms and conditions from mouth to anus. Imagine a toxin that can both paralyse and heal—talk about a toxin-ating paradox behind Botox is not only understandable but downright entertaining.Ever thought about the culinary disasters that led to medical breakthroughs? The Docs certainly have, and they share some laugh-out-loud anecdotes about historical food poisoning incidents that paved the way for modern medicine. From ancient Roman feasts gone awry to mediaeval sausage mishaps, The Docs paint a vivid picture of how botulinum toxin transitioned from a kitchen nightmare to a medical marvel. Their light-hearted approach ensures that even the most complex medical topics are as easy to digest as a well-cooked sausage—minus the botulinum, of course! So, why not join Professor Sackier and Doctor Guest for an episode that's as enlightening as it is entertaining? With their perfect blend of humour and expertise, they make the history and uses of Botox a topic you won't soon forget. Whether you're a medical professional or just someone curious about the quirks of history, this episode of Join the Docs promises to be a wrinkle in time you won't want to miss!—--DISCLAIMER: The views and opinions expressed on Join the Docs are those of Dr. Nigel Guest, Jonathan Sackier and other people on our show. Having been designated a Protected Geographical Indicator of Origin in 2013, only Black Pudding made in Stornoway can give itself that title after a rise in ‘imposter' Stornoway Black Puddings started putting farmers in Lewis out of business. Most of the black puddings only use beef suet, oatmeal, onion, blood, salt and pepper which gives it a unique flavour. Museum Nan Eilean Museum Nan Eilean can be found on the Lews Castle Grounds and is dedicated to the history and community of Lewis. Episode 144 Streamed Live Tuesday June 20, 2023 Main Topic: Monster Mash #14 - Slimes, Oozes, etc. Over the various editions of Dungeons and Dragons (DnD) there have been a few standard monsters in this category. They are generally amorphous, unintelligent, slow moving and are more like hazards than creatures. What makes them creatures is they grow, likely reproduce, and “attack” by some form of acid. In essence, they try to break down their victims and absorb them. These creatures have not organization or culture. Those attacked are done so opportunistically, not from any type of desire or motivation. Something lands on or near them and they attempt to digest it. The standard creatures are: Black Pudding, Gray Ooze, Green Slime, Ochre Jelly, Yellow Mold, and the Gelatinous Cube. The gelatinous cube is a little different from the others as they use pseudopods to attack and can actively move to a target. Later, Violet Fungi, Shriekers, and Gas Spores were added to this category as “fungus creatures”. These are a bit more complex, but still unintelligent. We discuss: 1) Their differences over the editions 2) Memorable encounters 3) Alternate takes or uses in encountersRandom Geek-itude: Report from Big Geek Land Big Geek Con: September 22-23, 2023Four Seasons Hotel in Saginaw, MI. – be there or be square! Ginger and Nuts are award-winning radio presenters who burst onto the airwaves weekly with non-stop banter and unpredictability. It's no wonder they were voted 'Best Community Radio Show'.The quick-witted duo have a natural ability when putting their guests at ease and have indisputably interviewed some of the biggest names in showbiz. From the Disco Diva Gloria Gaynor, Bond Girl Britt Ekland, and boxing legend Nigel Benn to exclusives with the entire cast of ITV1s award-winning crime drama, 'The Bay. They have also had memorable chats with Sir Ken Dodd, Freddie Starr and John Challis ('Boycie' from Only Fools and Horses), who are all sadly no longer with us. With more than 30 years of radio experience between them, Ginger and Nuts have attracted support from Disney, Marvel and Empire Cinemas. Without blowing their trumpet too much, they also boast 20k fans on TikTok.Katherine said, "We were also born to be herd, so we are delighted to be joining Cotswolds Radio and hope to entertain your loyal listeners".FROM TV TO RADIODarren has previously presented slots on BBC Children In Need, alongside Alan Titchmarsh, in front of a live studio audience. More recently, he was featured on Life Stories with Piers Morgan supporting his friend, Michael Barrymore.Comedian Bob Monkhouse OBE who wrote comedy for the likes of the legendary Bob Hope, was also a fan of Darren's unique presenting style. He said: "You've got it all, Darren - energy, ideas, fluency, wit and charm. You come over the airwaves like a breezy friend and a really warm person. It's so important to be true to yourself and pour your natural personality into that microphone, and that's what you do. You have the common touch. "After listening to you, I felt I knew you and liked you."BEHIND THE MICFor 26 years, Darren worked as a PR and Marketing Guru for West Midlands Police and achieved more than 12 Commendations for his creativity. Using his cheeky charm, he enlisted the support of big names like Myleene Klass and Chris Tarrant to endorse a recruitment campaign for the Special Constabulary for free.He also produced a charity single, 'Bobby's Girl', with singer Hayley Evetts who reached the finals of Pop Stars alongside Will Young. Darren and three police officers were the backing singers providing the 'ahh-hums'. He managed to persuade comedian Joe Pasquale to add his dulcet tones to what was a fun single that not only raised funds for The John Taylor Hospice in Birmingham but also the profile of West Midlands Police. He met Katherine, who also worked for the police, and they decided to date after discussing who would bring the Black Pudding to the Christmas buffet. In case you wanted to know, Darren did - and it was a big 'un.Within a year, they hit the national headlines after pranking family and friends into thinking Darren was to star in a new movie. Needless to say, the guests turning up to the make-believe premiere were, in fact, attending their wedding at the cinema. The rest is history, as they say.MENTAL HEALTH AMBASSADORSOn a more serious note, Darren's release from chronic pain, fatigue and mental health is presenting the 'Ginger and Nuts' show weekly.Behind the mic, he has been diagnosed with various long-term debilitating conditions, including Arthritis, Spine Disease, Syringomyelia (cyst on the spinal cord) and Fibromyalgia (widespread pain). He had to give up the job he loved to do due to his decline in health. He openly talks about his struggles with chronic anxiety and depression, in which he has been under a psychiatrist for more than four years. To help manage his condition, he is under a pain management specialist and is prescribed many controlled drugs such as Morphine. As well as caring for Darren during his flare-ups, Katherine has had seven miscarriages and nearly died during the last miscarriage, which landed on Father's Day a few years ago. It was heartbreaking. Earlier this year, the pair raised £503.43p for the Give a Duck Foundation.

Black pudding, blood sausage, and for Irish and UK listeners this food will need no introduction. Loved on breakfast plates across the country, did you know that Black Pudding tells the story of modern Irish cuisine through its ingredients, history, recipe hand me downs and much more?We speak to food writer, Kate Ryan of flavour.ie who recently penned the article “The Aleph: The Story of Irish Food in One Pudding”. It is based on her studies in Irish Food Culture Post Graduate Course at University College Cork, where Kate did a research paper on the topic. We got stuck into the medieval process of making black pudding and how it's done today. We learned about the exchange of recipes and meitheal of preparing food in the community. We talked about the history of this quintessentially Irish ingredient of fresh blood (now Protected Geographical Indication Recognised in parts of Ireland) and the ingenuity that is shown by butchers around the country in their preparation of pudding today. We then tested and compared three different black puddings, local to Kate's hometown of Clonakilty. They were Rosscarberry Recipes, Clonakilty Black Pudding and Haulie O'Neil of MJ O Neils Artisan Butcher Shop in Clonakilty. She gave us some tips on to cook pudding at home and eat it at times, other than breakfast… who knew?!?!? 3.00" Colette Twomey, founder of Clonakilty Black Pudding talks about her new project, her own golf club. As you do. She was trained as a brain technician but married a butcher which led to what is now a worldwide Irish food brand, known from Clonakilty to Sydney, Australia. She explains how a Dunnes Stores tea lady led to their hugely successful 'gluten free' range. She talks about producing 'white label' black pudding for other butchers. She gives a history lesson about the rise of supermarket multiples and what it meant for the Clonakilty business.Colette talks about how hard she worked, traversing the back roads of West Cork. She and her late husband, Edward, never wrote down a business plan but they had a vision. That was 'we love the pudding so much we'd like if people could buy it wherever they live'.The story of how they expanded into Australia is very revealing. She also reveals her plans for the US and for the soon to be launched vegetarian puddings. And she explains why it's all about attitude. She was a finalist in the EY Entrepreneur of the Year competition which she says gave her 'global vision'.Her 'hire in a heartbeat'? She chose a few - Norah Casey and Paula FitzSimons42.00" Kevin Maughan, CEO, Urban Volt talks about solar energy as a service. But Urban Volt also has its fingers in another ten international markets. He talks about the 'battery first' future where businesses will produce their own solar energy and then store it in their own batteries. He mentions a perceived conflict of interest where State led utilities may be causing distortions in the energy market. His 'hire in a heartbeat' - Shane Lanigan of Beach Point CapitalThe great insights on That Great Business are made possible through the support of De Facto Shaving Oil Hosted on Acast. Hari Ghotra joins Sue as a guest presenter this week and the subject is black pudding. The first mention of this interesting delicacy can be found way back in Homer's Odyssey. The family business of our studio guest, Colette Twomey, doesn't go back quite that far, but Clonakilty Blackpudding Company certainly has an impressive history. Founded in the 1880s and still family run, the company produces truly delicious black pudding, along with equally tasty sausages. Sue fails to get the secret family recipe out of Colette but does get lots of insight into how to cook this hugely underrated breakfast treat.
This savory sausage, often served at breakfast, traditionally gets its rich color and flavor from blood. Anney and Lauren dig into the history and etymology of black pudding. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It is said that 300 years ago, in the year Bedlam, Divine Magic died. There were temples and churches to Gods and they suddenly closed their doors forever. All we know is we have no record of prayers being answered. “Monsters” then took advantage of this power vacuum and began their hunt. Now the races that supposedly made war against the world have become peaceful…mostly. Some people do not believe Gods ever existed and Divine Magic is a myth. Black pudding has enjoyed a resurgence in recent years, thanks largely to the endorsement of celebrity chefs who have purloined the blood sausage from its traditional place in the breakfast fry-up and paired it with seafood or used in salads, stuffings and stews. The Western Isles town of Stornoway has emerged as the go-to destination for this product, and island butchers have geared up production to capitalise on the ever-increasing demand. But what's the history of black pudding, how is it made - and where does all the blood come from? Presented and Produced by Nancy Nicolson

Listen again to our podcast from June last year. It's Hari's last week as guest presenter on the show, so she's making the most of the goodies our guests are offering up. Black pudding and milkshake make a bit of an odd combination… But hey, why not? The first mention of black pudding can be found way back in Homer's Odyssey. The family business of our first guest, Colette Twomey, doesn't go back quite that far, but Clonakilty Blackpudding Company certainly has an impressive history. Founded in the 1880s and still family run, the company produces truly delicious black pudding, along with equally tasty sausages. When she fails to get the secret family recipe out of Colette, Sue has a few questions about how a business retains authentic quality when their product becomes Ireland's favourite black pudding. With a farming background, Andy Howie knows plenty about sausages, but he's now a connoisseur of the dairy side. Inspired by the poor quality of drinks on offer at a festival, Andy and his wife Jodie launched Shaken Udder Milkshake. They wanted to create something that was worlds apart from the instant powdered stuff and holy cow, have they succeeded – what's more, they've done it without any investors.

Helen and Gavin talk about the different approaches to various types of meat on opposite sides of the Atlantic. As expected, we talk a lot about bacon, but attitudes to lamb, chicken, and different types of sausage also get some air-time.
The Rain crosses the North Klippa Bridge with little trouble from the guards. It seems that the old man may have been lying when saying they were an ambush. The other side, however, was a different story. With a black bubbling sludge dissolving the guards, The Rain must step in and protect the people along the bridge. This is a full battle episode.

Black Pudding lobbing is no joke. It's been around since the War of the Roses. This yearly tradition continues on in Ramsbottom, where black puddings are lobbed at Yorkshire puddings on posts high above competitors. Why do they do this? Well, in previous iterations, it was a continuation of an ongoing battle, but today it's to raise money for local families in need of a little assistance. We talk with Jimmy Cunliffe, the current organizer of the event and Gillian, the social media person with the competition.

Charles Campion reports from Normandy in France as he helps judge the world black pudding championships, which features entries from Japanese, Austrian and Irish butchers. Each year the "knights of the black pudding", a long established organisation of food lovers, hold the annual Foire au Boudin. Nearly six hundred butchers from around the world enter the competition to help celebrate the ancient dish.As Charles discovers most of the world's great food cultures have some form of blood sausage and they vary in size, shape, texture and flavour. Although we've been making this dish since the arrival of the Romans, many parts of Britain have fallen out of love with the black pudding. The simple recipe of blood, barley, fat, onions and spices is affordable, delicious and a complete meal, and there are signs of a chef led revival. The competition, and the work on display of some extremely creative butchers provides many delicious reasons why this humble food really is worthy of a revival. Young chef and rising star James Winter based in Gloucestshire, also provides some tips on how to cook black pudding.Producer: Dan Saladino.
