The Indonesian music scene is currently experiencing a vibrant period of experimentation, where musicians are blending vernacular Indonesian music traditions with elements from diverse global influences and historical periods. This fusion has led to the emergence of groundbreaking acts like Senyawa, who have successfully captured international attention. While the creative landscape pushes forward, however, there's a simultaneous return to older technology in music distribution, particularly the resurgence of vinyl recording. This vinyl revival, mirroring a global trend, has taken root in Indonesia. Taufiq Rahman, editor-in-chief of Jakarta Post as well as the founder of Elevation Records, is at the forefront of this. He and his business partners have now established the country's sole vinyl pressing factory, marking a significant milestone in Indonesia's contemporary music industry. What is the role of vinyl recordings in Indonesian music history? And what are the factors driving its current renaissance? For those interested in exploring Indonesian music through vinyl, Taufiq Rahman will also offer his valuable insights, including why "Badai Pasti Berlalu" is one of Indonesia's finest pop productions and how the artistry of Rhoma Irama extends beyond dangdut music. Indonesian musicians Rara Sekar, Sandrayati, Ugoran Prasad and Rully Shabara discuss music and social change, trying to thrive as musicians in the age of social media, and whether or not all musicians have an equal opportunity to succeed. Rara Sekar's career in music began as the vocalist for folk group Banda Neira, as well as a member of Daramuda. In 2020 she began her solo project hara, in which she creates a musical fusion inspired by folk, ambient and post-rock music. She is also an anthropologist, having completed a master's degree in cultural anthropology from Victoria University of Wellington. Sandrayati is a Filipino-American singer who grew up in Java and Bali, whose music explores the pain and beauty of uprooting and planting yourself somewhere else. She possess a light, dream-like singing voice and has recently released Safe Ground, an album created in Iceland alongside Olafur Arnalds. Ugoran Prasad is a renowned Indonesian fictionist, dramaturg and musician who is perhaps best known for fronting modern rock band Majelis Lidah Berduri. Their restless, exciting sound has made them one of Indonesia's most important indie bands over the last few decades, and they are currently working on their fourth studio album. Rully Shabara is an Indonesian artist and vocalist whose main musical interest lies in exploring the human voice as a medium of creation. He's a genre-bending musician whose duo Senyawa are pushing the boundaries of experimental music in Indonesia.

Peter Knight is an Australian composer, trumpeter, and sound artist. He has been Artistic Director of the Australian Art Orchestra for the last ten years, performed with Anthony Braxton, Senyawa, and Alvin Lucier, and played at some of the most significant festivals and venues in the world. Senyawa serve up a vision of hell today in a track so divisive Tobin actually leaves the studio, declaring "The End" of the show. The song is 9 minutes of utter brilliance but not appreciated by everyone it seems. In their rich 11 year history Senyawa have managed to blend traditional Indonesian sounds with punk and avant-garde. Senyawa have done this brilliantly despite Tobin's scathing attitude toward Alkisah - today's featured track. Earlier this year the band collaborated with 44 independent labels across the globe on the release of Alkisah. The labels were able to create their own artwork for the LP along with remix and master the tracks to appeal to local tastes. Quite a revolutionary thing in the music industry. Disco reappears on the menu too today. Tobin has resisted his primal urges for too long and has finally given way. Therefore, we bring in two disco classics from Rare Pleasure thirty years apart. Over the past decade, FRKTL has released an amazing discography of work, including her recent remix of Senyawa, and her critically acclaimed album Excision After Love Collapses. FRKTL is also a visual artist who creates multi dimensional worlds, glimpses of which you can find adorning albums by some of our favourites. From her home in Latvia, she has crafted a two hour journey through experimental, abstract, ambient, and instrumental works with many field recordings. It also includes some vocal work, and more of her own music than she usually puts into a mix. It is music to escape into while at home in solitude, eyes closed or looking up at the sky through the window. Dharma is a guitarist who is probably best known for his work in the Singapore art-rock band The Observatory, which has been running for almost 20 years now. They've made a bunch of records, have toured all over the world, and they even have a documentary you can check out called The Obs. You can find that on iTunes, and Dharma appears quite a lot in it, as well a lot of other Singapore musicians, and David Toop even pops up for a bit in there as well. The Observatory is currently a three-piece consisting of Dharma on guitar, Yuen Chee-Wai on guitar, and Cheryl Ong on drums. They're all amazing musicians, and you'll definitely be hearing more about them in future episodes of this podcast.Back in December, I went to a festival in Singapore called Playfreely which The Observatory had organised and I asked Dharma if we could record an interview. He was super busy at the time because, in addition to making the festival happen, he was doing a recording session with Wukir. If you're not familiar with Wukir, he is best known for being one half of the band Senyawa along with his bandmate Rully Shabara (episode 2 of this podcast) Wukir builds his own instruments for all of his projects and he was also playing at Playfreely in December with a new instrument he had built.At the end of one of their recording days, I went down to the studio to interview Dharma and since Wukir was there, I ended up talking with him as well. The recording was a little bit chaotic but in the best way; we ended up recording it outside in the fresh air because they'd been couped up in the studio all day, but it was quite windy, so you'll hear that in the mics. Then it started raining and we ended up moving inside. You can also hear a fourth person who helps translate for Wukir at a couple of points. That's my friend Mahamboro who was also in Singapore at the time to play some shows. Every year Berlin's foremost “petri dish” of contemporary electronic, digital and experimental music takes place at the CTM festival. This year CTM celebrated its 20th anniversary, exploring the theme of “Persistence” with a jam-packed 10-day program of concerts, club nights and performances. One of the artist at this year's festival was the Indonesian vocalist Rully Shabara, who has become one of South Asia's most recognisable voices in the underground and experimental music scene. Although he's most known as one half of the duo Senyawa, this year at CTM he presented three of his other extravagant projects: the experimental punk band Zoo, modern tribal trance in Setabuhan, and the free improvisation project Kombo, which invites various performers from across the globe to improvise together in different constellations. All of these projects threaded through by his incessant personal exploration of the possibilities of his voice.

Lucy Guerin is one of the powerhouses of Australian Contemporary dance, known for her work in Australia and abroad. An Adelaide native, Lucy fell in love with contemporary dance and pursued this love to New York in 1989, dancing there for seven years. During this time, she worked with leading dance mentors including Bebe Miller, Tere O’Connor and Sara Rudner. In 2002, Lucy Guerin Inc was established in Melbourne, providing a space for exploring and expanding upon ideas about contemporary dance. Through its noted Pieces for Small Spaces & First Run programs, the company have provided a platform for emerging choreographers to experiment and explore choreographic approaches. Lucy has increasingly been working across forms, working in the UK with Carrie Cracknell first on Medea (2014) and then Macbeth (2015). Following the success of Macbeth, Lucy was commissioned by Rambert to make the work Tomorrow. “I like working with the dancers, I like working on the detail of the choreography and the structure of the work.” In terms of acclaim across her career, Lucy won the prestigious Bessie Award for her work Two Lies in 1996 and later in 2005, for outstanding choreography and creation for Chunky Move’s production of Tense Dave, with Gideon Obarzanek and Michael Kantor. This conversation covers everything from current works, working with actors, dance and gender, Australian dance identity, and Lucy’s journey in contemporary dance. “It’s very exposing when you first have an audience.”

Tralala Blip: Tralala Blip formed in 2007 when Randolf Reimann (Massappeal) became involved with a Lismore disability service that ran music programs for persons with intellectual and physical disabilities. Frustrated with the lack of engagement in the program he began bringing along electronic music equipment to the sessions. His tenure at the disability service ended in late 2008 and he was told that none of the 16 participants were interested in continuing the service. After meeting with a few members of the ensemble it became clear that the project was not cut due to a lack of interest and in 2009 Randolph continued the ensemble not as a program but as an independent band. Since then, they’ve recorded a collaborative LP with fellow Lismore sound artist ‘Muttboy’ and released an album on Brisbane label Disembraining Machine. In 2013, the current lineup of Randolf, Mathew Daymond, Lydian Dunbar, Zac Mifsud and Phoebe Rose were invited to play Unsound festival in Krakow, Poland. Recorded & mixed by Andrew McLellan. Wukir Suryadi & Tarquin Manek: Wukir is one half of Senyawa – a duo with vocalist Rully Shabara that draws from traditional Indonesian folk music and combines it with a punk sensibility. He’s become well known in experimental music circles for his captivatingly intricate instruments. In this recording you’ll hear him playing a javanese hurdy gurdy that he constructed. It’s very fitting that he be paired with Tarquin Manek (Bum Creek, Pikelet and Tarcar). Tarquin’s irrepressible clarinet bleats hysterically above the discordant harmony of the hurdy gurdy, sometimes they meet in perfect harmonic distortion.
