It's not because we're dressed up in old people's clothes but each morning my wife and I find great joy in watching sitcoms from the 1950's and 60's. Much of that lifestyle seen on the screen is long gone and forgotten. The way John Forsythe dressed on Bachelor Father compared to Seinfeld, The Connors, The Goldberg's and Abbott Elementary. That black and white world that John Forsythe participated with truly had color. Eventually the episodes became fashion shows. Petticoat Junction to The Partridge Family, Brady Bunch and to the rebirth of Bell Air on Peacock. Watching Antenna TV lets me see what moved through my parents and quite possibly how I grew into becoming me. And the subject covered are still dealt with today!!!

October 4, 2022 I feel like a 100 year old man. My H.D. TV antenna is hooked up to all these channels that feature programming from the 1950's forward. Then they go into commercials. 90% of the advertising is about life and death insurance, selling your home, dentures and arthritis. Viewers can't help but shout, “No! I'm doing old people things!” Of course the commercials are geared toward that generation. They've cut the cord not the need for entertainment. This antenna gives you fifty plus channels free. But why haven't the younger generations tapped into it? They too have cut the cord and still need the entertainment to which they're getting on digital notebooks and smart phones. I feel for them. When the Wi-Fi can't be found, their lives are upside down.

Some people don’t like to think or talk about their own budget. They may feel like it is work to do or they feel they won’t have anymore fun in life if they start following a budget. Having a personal budget is like work. The place you work needs to spend less on expenses than they bring in for income. That is no different than your own personal budget. It is simple Math. This is part of our Mills Way to Financial Freedom Action steps and rule that we covered with our boys. They don’t do a great job at it so we help them at least with the savings part of their budget and staying debt free. Creating a budget is more than just making sure to place a spot of each expense. It is also important to create a payment accelerator amount in the budget. The payment accelerator amount is what we use to get our debt paid off faster and then to save towards or Financial Freedom goal. Sometimes when I have worked with people, they had to make hard choices what they felt was hard to them. To other people their choices may seem like they should have been easy. For instance, if one family gives their kid’s $100 per week allowance and someone like us that doesn’t pay our kids an allowance, we would see that as an easy choice to cut back on in the budget. But they may not think so. One family may spend $150 per week on Cable TV and another family like us has Antenna TV. So, for us that would be an easy expense to cut back on in our eyes but maybe not theirs. Couples I have worked with in the past had a harder time agreeing on what to adjust than single person of course. Sometimes people made even larger reductions by downsizing their house or selling off an expensive truck they own. I have budget sheets available for people I work with that we can break each expense out monthly and yearly. We show what the percentage of the expense is to total expenses. Then we can see that they roughly need to in investments to reach their retirement goal. Of course, before they can save for retirement, they need to get their budget in-line and then get all their debt paid off. Below are some suggested rough percentages that people could use as a rough guideline when doing a budget. The one I like to plug in first is 10% for your Debt Accelerator amount to get debt free and save towards Financial Freedom. Our Budget has Needs and Wants in it. Remember we need Shelter, Food, Water and the rest of our expenses are negotiable. Yes, we need clothes but in reason. Our Clothes budget for the four of us is $1,380 a year. I have seen some people spend over $6,000 on just clothes a year. Some people think if Blue Jeans or Shoes aren’t over $100 than they aren’t any good. If people make the income to support $6,000 in clothes then good for them. But a majority of people have debt, no savings and spend more than they make so they need to look at every expense. Here are some suggested percentage of your family take home pay after taxes and insurance. It is covered in Podcast. Remember my disclaimer on millsway.com. New data shows antenna TV use is on the rise, particularly among people already watching Internet TV. ATSC 3.0 promises to bring broadcast TV into the Internet family. When will it arrive?Tim Hanlon, CEO of the Vertere Group, joins us this week as we look at the present and future of TV broadcasting in America.Chapter 1: Britbox arrives in the UK (1:30)Britbox, a collaboration between the BBC and ITV in the UK, has been very successful netting over a half-million US subscribers. Now the service is to launch in the UK, but isn’t all the content already available through BBC iPlayer and ITV+?Chapter 2: Stunning growth in antenna TV use (5:40)Mr. Hanlon explains why he thinks antenna TV is enjoying such a strong resurgence. We also discuss the Nielsen data that describes the phenomenon.Chapter 3: Unbundling and rebundling (9:30)How antenna TV is becoming an essential part of people’s TV bundles.Chapter 4: Locast and Aereo TV (12:30)Locast is a non-profit helping people tap into their local broadcast channels. We discuss the differences and similarities with now-defunct Aereo TV. Mr. Hanlon talks about two other services helping people leverage antenna TV.Chapter 5: Why broadcasters should help bring personal bundles together (15:00)The big challenge for consumers is bringing together all the different video services they use into a simple interface. We discuss several solutions and why broadcasters aren’t stepping up to help.Chapter 6: Why broadcasters aren’t waiting for ATSC 3.0 (18:30)Sinclair launched STIRR online when it promised to do something similar leveraging ATSC 3.0. Why did Sinclair decide not to wait for the new broadcast standard to arrive? Tribune owns 42 tv stations in 33 markets, WGN, digital multicast network Antenna TV, minority stakes in the TV Food Network and CareerBuilder, and a variety of real estate assets, according to the companies' press release. Even after the Republican controlled FCC threw it a bone at its last open meeting by reinstating the UHF discount, which lets broadcasters half the size of the audience their UHF stations reach, thereby enabling broadcast companies to own more stations, Sinclair may still need to divest some its stations to fall under the 39 percent cap on the national audience. Sinclair is Chaired by David Smith--a key supporter of Donald Trump. ---- President Trump signed an executive order establishing a new American Technology Council which will be tasked with coming up with ways to transform and modernize the federal government. It's not clear yet which companies will participate, but Tony Romm at Recode notes that Google, Facebook, Amazon, Microsoft have huddled with the administration in the past. Mike Allen at Axios reported the creation of the Council was spearheaded by Trump advisor and son-in-law Jared Kushner and that the council will hold a summit in June to map out a plan for the duration of the Trump administration. Two lawmakers also created a bi-partisan Digital Trade Caucus last week which is aimed at protecting cross-border digital trade from protectionism. Minnesota Republican Erik Paulsen and Washington Democrat Suzan DelBene made the announcement last week. The Department of Justice has announced a criminal investigation into Uber. The New York Times reported in March that the company was using a software called Greyball to circumvent local authorities in areas where Uber hasn't been approved yet. Now a grand jury in Northern California has subpoenaed documents from Uber related to the matter. Dan Levine has the story in Reuters. The State Department wants to intensify its scrutiny of visa applicants. The agency published a document last week, in line with the Trump administration's efforts to subject visa applicants to "extreme vetting", which outlines plans to require visa applicants to provide five years worth of their social media handles, phone numbers and email addresses. The public will have a chance to comment on the new proposed rules until May 18th. Yaganeh Torbati and Mica Rosenberg report in Reuters. The reined-in National Security Agency still collected 151 million phone records in 2016. Charlie Savage reports in the New York Times that the NSA previously collected billions of phone records per day, according to a transparency report released last week. The Department of Homeland Security warned of an emerging espionage campaign led by Chinese hackers. The hacker group APT10 or MenuPass group has targeted construction, aerospace, engineering and telecom companies in the past, but security analysts are now saying they found evidence that the group could now be working in tandem with the Chinese government to collect military secrets from the United States. Chris Bing has the story in CyberScoop. Elon Musk's SpaceX boosted a classified U.S. Spy Satellite into orbit on Monday May 1st at 7:14AM. The payload is a National Reconnaissance Office satellite. SpaceX is trying to ramp up its commercial space flight program following an explosion last September that halted it. However, last week's launch was SpaceX's 4th successful launch since January, and it was flawless. Andy Pasztor reports in the Wall Street Journal. Finally, a report by an engineer at Facebook found the company rejects code submitted by female engineers at a rate that is 35% higher than their male counterparts. Facebook's most recent diversity report shows women comprise just 17% of Facebook's technical workforce. Deepa Seetharaman reports in the Wall Street Journal.

I’m constantly being taken back to an earlier time by a smell, a taste, sometimes a sound, and sometimes at the most random times and places… and I love it. I don’t know if nostalgia is exactly the right term for this, but I think it is a gift to be grateful for. I don’t mean a gift like having psychic abilities, or playing an instrument, but I really love nostalgic moments and I’m always encouraging my senses to catch a ride and take advantage of them. But I’m so very grateful for them, because I was fortunate enough to have a great childhood with an amazing family, and I feel like life would be kind of sad without tiny little breaks for a road trip to the past to re-experience some of those great moments. When I was little, I used to spend quite a bit of time with my grandparents at their house. I called them Bamma and Bampa, and I still do. For a while, my Bamma had a fabric shop that I would also spend time in. I loved helping her clean things and organize merchandise, even though I’m not sure I was truly as much help as I thought I was. I can still hear the sound of Bamma’s sewing machine running and the soap operas on the TV in the background. It’s funny, but seeing older daytime TV commercials from that time period will put me right back in the fabric shop too. When I think of my time with Bamma and Bampa in their old house from that time, I think of holidays. I think of different ways my Bamma would entertain me and keep me busy. One of the funny and strange things I always think about is Peanut Butter and mayonnaise sandwiches. I know I know. Peanut Butter and Mayonnaise sandwiches. My Bampa, who died several years ago, would make them for me. Apparently he used to eat them as a kid, and I always assumed it was a German thing. I did learn to love them at the time, though the thought of eating one now makes my stomach turn. Well cut to a week or so ago. I discovered we have this channel on cable called Antenna TV! Apparently it has been around for a year or two and I had no clue. There are SO many shows and sitcoms from the 70s and 80s on this channel, and if you’re not careful, you can find yourself skipping a night’s sleep just to watch them. But that night I found myself sucked into an old episode of The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson! I loved Johnny Carson growing up, probably only because it was a special moment to be able to stay up that late. I watched Johnny Carson at my own house growing up plenty of times, but for some reason the other night I was picking up serious nostalgia watching Johnny… and it took me back to Bamma and Bampa’s house. In this particular episode, Cass Elliott would make one of her last public appearances before her tragic death from a heart attack, and she was talking to Johnny about health issues she was having involving her heart, but she didn’t seem to be taking it too seriously. Such a haunting moment. But also on this episode, Johnny was interviewing the hilarious Buddy Hackett. Coming and going from commercial as the familiar theme song would play, I was taken back to my Bamma and Bampa’s house. And I was in my mom’s old bedroom trying to sleep. And in this memory I was hearing them watch Johnny Carson on the other side of the wall in the living room. Suddenly Johnny and Buddy Hackett make two references to Peanut Butter and Mayonnaise sandwiches, and how the mayonnaise helps the peanut butter go down easier. Amazing, right? How often do you hear someone bring up peanut butter and mayonnaise in the same sentence? So I’ve told myself that this moment of nostalgia was orchestrated by my Bampa… a Hello from the other side. An interesting side note to this story is that within the same week of having this experience, my mom saw a local psychic here in Missouri, one whose name I keep hearing about. Well my mom can’t stop talking about the connections and validations from this amazing reading… and one of the biggest messages that came through was from my Bampa. Another interesting side note goes back to the reading I received from Dena DeCastro in our first Astrology episode. Do you remember her saying that I’d be having more paranormal experiences soon? I know you all have to have had similar experiences. Some of you are highly intuitive, and some of you have abilities most of us don’t have, and so I’m sure there are lots of stories out there.
