Hearts on Fire Feet on the Move–Mark Raue–The Preferential Option for The Poor (One of the most consistent themes in the scriptures is the priority that must be given to the poor and needy. It was a hallmark of Jesus's words and actions. We read of the Last judgement where Jesus clearly emphasised that we will one day be judged, not for how dedicated we were to religious practise or ritual, but to how we treated the poor and outcast. Over the last 50 years or so this has become known as the preferential option for the poor. It is not a political option, nor is it an ideological option, no, the preferential option for the poor is at the centre of the Gospel. The ongoing debates in Australia about the cost of living, minimum wages, welfare payments and rent affordability affect everyone. However, those at the lowest end of the food chain are impacted most dramatically and in a truly Christian world would be prioritised before those who are well off are thought about. If we are genuinely trying to live a Christian life consistent with the teachings of Jesus in the Gospels, then preferencing the poor in our daily thinking and decision making is the only option, the only choice and the ultimate criteria upon which our lives will one day be judged.)

Hearts on Fire Feet on the Move–Mark Raue–The Common Good (One of the great mysteries of Christian belief is that the all-powerful, all-knowing God of all creation knows and cares about the intimate dealings of each of our hearts. Complementing that mystery, though, is that whilst God knows and cares for each of us as individuals, our needs and wants can never be met at the expense of other people, or that we can justifiably live in splendid isolation, immune from the impact our choices have on others. My needs and wants must be balanced against the needs of other people, and in the end, what is ideally in the best interests of everybody. This is known as the principle of the common good. The Gospel implores us to focus on and give priority to the marginalised, the vulnerable, or the poor. The principle of the common good can be described as the sum total of the social conditions that allow people, either as groups or individuals, to reach their fulfilment more fully and more easily. So, individuals will thrive when the group thrives, and the group will thrive when individuals thrive. One depends upon the other.)

This year the appeal theme is “hearts on fire, feet on the move.” And it has a particular focus on Timor-Leste. Sr Carolina, who is the face of the awareness and fundraising campaign, is a great example of the devotion of missionaries, dedicating herself to providing critical healthcare services to the rural community of Venilale in Timor-Leste. Sr Carolina has been running the medical clinic since1995 to provide urgent healthcare services to a community still bearing the scars of decades of unrest, with most of the treatment at the centre focuses on tuberculosis and malnutrition. Out of Santa Cruz, California, the band includes Paige Kalenian (18) and Jax Huckle (17). Paige writes and plays everything melodic for the songs, and Jax fills in with drums, resulting in a sound equivalent to a 5-piece band. They pull off their full sound live by triggering the instruments they aren't physically playing. Jax drums while simultaneously “playing” bass by triggering 10-20 sec long samples sourced from the original studio recordings. Paige plays guitar and sings while kicking off the rest of the instruments heard in their songs via a pedal board. They don't play with backing tracks, nor do they play to a click. We're joined by Australian elections analyst Ben Raue to break down the collapse in coalition support and the decline of the two-party duopoly, as well as the key issues that shaped the 2022 contest.
