Most of Herb Alpert's albums are thrift store mainstays, with Whipped Cream and Other Delights being the most recognizable. However, the reason there are so many is because the music, unlike a lot of easy listening at the time, was enjoyable to a wide arrange of listeners and of consistent quality from album to album. Still, 1965 seemed like one of the best years for Alpert, as his band, originally session musicians, became an actual unit. !!Going Places!!, Alpert's second release in 1965 and follow-up to Whipped Cream, is one of the best examples of his sound and managed keep those hits coming.

Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast we are talking to Patti Weidenfeld, daughter of comedian/actor Pat Cooper. An entertainer for more than 50 years, Pat Cooper was known as a ‘comedians comedian', someone who other comedians look up to as a genuine talent and a show business icon. Born in Coney Island Brooklyn, Pat Cooper embodied the Mad Men era comedy scene up until last year when he passed away at age 93. What Jackie Mason was for Jewish comedians, Pat Cooper did for Italian comedians. And believe me he wore his Italian heritage proudly. One of his comedy album Spaghetti Sauce and Other Delights featured Pat posing in spaghetti sauce a la Herb Alpert's Whipped Cream and Other Delights. Many comedy fans today know Pat Cooper from his guest spots on Seinfeld and films like Analyze This and Analyze That. Unfortunately he's also remembered for his many appearances on The Howard Stern Show where he became famous as an outrage comic who told tough, real family stories on air airing his dirty laundry for all to hear. Patti on the other hand, talks to us about growing up in 70s Las Vegas and travelling with her father and mother to casinos on the strip and on the Atlantic City boardwalk opening for entertainers such as Paul Anka, Frank Sinatra, Jerry Lewis, Tony Bennett, Liza Minelli, Sammy Davis Jr. and more. When he wasn't doing club dates, he was doing guest hosting slots on The Merv Griffin Show and The Mike Douglas Show upwards of 60 times…each. His infamous 1981 spot on Tom Snyder's Tomorrow show interview revealed too much about headliners demands that he felt were ridiculous and got him blackballed from working in his adopted home town Las Vegas for years. Once again, Pat aired too much dirty laundry. Still, Patti had an idyllic life with her father and mother until one day when Patti realized that some things she heard from her parents just didn't add up. We discuss this with at length with Patti on part one of our interview which you are about to hear right now. This is the Rarified Heir Podcast, everyone has a story. This one, you haven't heard before.

Herb Alpert: you'll never find a more beloved figure in the pop music world. A mensch. Did you think he was Latin? Nope. He IS an Angeleno, but….he was a Jewish kid, born in Boyle Heights; went to Fairfax High and USC. Before “cultural appropriation” became a dirty word, Herbie had a revelation while attending a bullfight in Baja - came back with “The Lonely Bull”, and ignited a career that has won him a Tony, 8 Grammies, and, a National Medal of Arts. He is the only musician to have #1 hits, both as a vocalist and instrumentalist. In his mid-sixties heyday he outsold The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and Frank Sinatra. Always smiling behind his trumpet, the handsome Mr. Alpert became an unlikely pin-up, then he scored big-time as a record producer and mogul (with partner Jerry Moss), and today, at 88, as an artist of renown, crafting massive sculptural installations and paintings, he continues to thrive creatively. I guess you could say that in addition to being a dedicated, hard worker, that he also was blessed. The Mexican Shuffle, (or, as some may remember from the chewing gum commercials)- The Teaberry Shuffle, was ubiquitous. It was all over the tv. This is happy music, pure and simple. In the ad folks of all walks of life, just going about their business, start dancing whenever they pop in a stick of Teaberry gum. And, Herbie's percolating soundtrack conveys that propulsion perfectly. (I recommend YouTubing it). The record received a sizable boost of recognition from this exposure - as did A Taste Of Honey (from the Whipped Cream and Other Delights album) - as The Dating Game theme song. Along with Motown and The Beatles, Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass were the soundtrack of the 60s.

We continue Glenn Miller month in celebration of what would have been his 120th birthday on March 1. He owned 12 33 ⅓ RPM Vinyl records of Glenn Miller performing his music, later conductors of the Miller band, and other band leaders recording Glenn's music. My dad owned even more Miller music on the original 78 RPM Shellac records. Now, if you are a follower of this show, you'll also know my dad was a really big Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass fan. Fed up with the cheesy antics and shameless self-promotion of typical wedding disc jockeys, Mary Nisi founded Toast and Jam in 2005 based on the idea that her clients and guests should be entertained, not overshadowed. Music-obsessed since childhood, Mary got her start in community radio and began DJing events when a listener called the request line and asked if she would DJ their wedding. Since then, the company has provided the soundtrack to thousands of weddings and events in Chicago and beyond, most notably for Barack & Michelle Obama, Valerie and Laura Jarrett, Vince Vaughn, and this one afterparty for every important NASCAR driver who was all very amused by the fact that she knew not one of them by name, amongst many, many others. She is a founding member of the Chicago Independent Radio Project (CHIRP) and the CHIRP Record Fair & Other Delights and currently hosts "The Noonday Underground" on Mondays from noon to 3 pm on CHIRPradio.org. She's DJed at numerous spots around Chicago including The Whistler, Cole's Danny's (RIP!), Schuba's, The Burlington, Delilah's, and Smashing Time, the legendary Saturday night dance party at The Hideout, as well as abroad at All Tomorrow's Parties, the celebrated music festival in Camber Sands, England. A graduate of DePaul University and a native of Omaha, Nebraska, Mary has been featured on NPR's All Things Considered, Chicago Public Radio, CS Brides, The Knot, Wedding Wire, The Atlantic, Chicago Tribune, Brides Chicago, Martha Stewart Weddings and TimeOut Chicago. She is also a graduate of the Goldman Sachs 10000 Small Businesses Program. In 2022, she launched the podcast All Up In My Lady Business. Mary is also the creator of the Toast & Jam Lab, an online course to help Mobile DJs Grow & Scale their businesses. Mary fills the rest of her time with beekeeping in her Evanston, IL,  backyard, sewing in the basement, downhill skiing, watching Jeopardy!, and bicycling around the neighborhood with her husband, John, and son Sebastian. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/2djs/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/2djs/support

M9 "Treasure of San Miguel" (Roger Nichols), Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass, Sounds Like, A&M Records, 1967 (2:14) Herb Alpert was born in 1935, and is an American trumpeter who led the band “Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass” in the 1960s. He was born and raised in the Eastside Los Angeles. His parents were Tillie and Louis Alpert ---they were Jewish immigrants to the U.S., coming here from the Ukraine and from Romania. Alpert was born into a family of musicians. His father was a mandolin player and his mother taught violin. Herb's older brother was a drummer.  Herb began to play trumpet at the age of eight. While attending the University of Southern California in the 1950s, he was a member of the USC Trojan Marching Band for two years. In the 1960s Alpert co-founded A&M Records with Jerry Moss, A for Alpert and M for Moss. There are many, many measures of success in the area of popular music by which to measure the success of Herb Alpert - - ….here are just a few: He sold some 72 million records worldwide. And 28 of his albums landed on the Billboard 200 chart 5 of his albums became No. 1 albums He achieved #1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 as instrumentalist He has had 14 platinum albums (sold 1 million) and 15 gold albums (sold 500,000). He has received a Tony Award, eight Grammy Awards, and the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006…. and was awarded the National Medal of Arts by Barack Obama in 2013. One of the recording techniques Herb Alpert used in these early records was the overdubbing of the trumpet part, Starting with his first album, THE LONELY BULL, and the title track 1 on side 1.  According to Herb Alpert, he said that he had been trying to find the right trumpet voice. He tried emulating the trumpet styles of Harry James, Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis and Clifford Brown. Oddly enough, he got inspiration NOT from these famous trumpeters, but from a guitarist named …Les Paul. Les Paul had been using multitracking his guitar  recordings. So Alpert tried multitracking his trumpet … and that multitracking became one of the signature sounds we will hear. Here is an example of the overdubbed trumpet from the song A QUIET TEAR……. (Play an example of Herb's overdubbed trumpet on the song   A QUIET TEAR  song side 2 track 6) In this overdub Herb Alpert is recording each part with the same phrasing and time … but playing the second part in harmony. Additionally Alpert does a fair amount of overdubbing and playing both parts in unison. This double-recording of one part gives Herb's trumpet an even more rich and full sound, added resonance of the instrument and added reverb or echo of the room. So overdubbing while playing the trumpet part in unison or in harmony was a signature sound of Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass. Here is an example from THE LONELY BULL intro….

In the days before music streaming services became a ubiquitous, when physical media ruled the music world, the first thing a music fan encountered before playing the musica on a record, a CD or a cassette was the artwork on the cover. The cover was the always gateway to the music. Some cover art is tastefully done, some covers have Facebook groups devoted to their awfulness. If done very well (or very poorly), cover art can come to define the music the listener is about to play. Welcome to episode 159 of Love That Album. Even before you play a note, looking at the covers of albums like Abbey Road, East or Whipped Cream and Other Delights will bring memories or impressions into your head. You may buy the record for the music, but it may well be the album cover that persuades you to pick it up in the record store in the first place. The very important role of cover designer often decides whether you decide to give an album a second glance. One gentleman who knows this very well is Steven Jurgensmeyer. He may be known to podcast listeners as the host of the excellent All Music Books: Deep Dive podcast (also on the Pantheon network), but his day gig for many years has been in designing album covers. He worked for may years at Ryko and Rounder, so you may well know the artwork he's done for albums by Robert Plant and Alison Krauss, Sugar (featuring Bob Mould), Branford Marsalis, Robert Cray, Chris Bell and many others. We had a great discussion on his own work, whether an album's success and its artwork are linked, and the contrast between the previous world of physical art layout and its modern digital counterpart....we also take some time to talk about Steven's work with All Music Books.    Thanks so much to Steven for his time and invaluable insight into a side of music that we know about, yet don't make as much a part of the conversation.    You can check out all the album covers (and more) that we discuss at https://www.stevenjurgensmeyer.com/#/music/ and you can read reviews of a large library of music books at https://allmusicbooks.com/. This episode will feature music by the bands who played at the first important pop music festival in England. The 14 hour Technicolour Dream was the first major underground event in England. it took place on April 29, 1967 at the Alexandra Palace. The objective of the event was to raise funds for the underground newspaper, The International Times, who's offices had been raided by the police in an intimidation tactic to shut down the paper. The paper was gaining influence with the emerging Hippie movement in England. The Technicolour Dream was a multi media event that had rock bands, poets, artists displaying their works and alot of fun activities. It was a success and the paper raised the money to keep operating and to cover court expenses. The attendees wanted more Happenings and the Summer of Love had just begun. During the Psychedelic era, bands would tend to write songs that would be abit more whimsical and engaging with lyrics that had mystic imagery and light-hearted themes. The music was uncomplicated and very melodic and stirring with it's simplicity. The songs could be described as "Childlike" as they tended to have an immediate appeal to both children and adults. This show has collected songs for the enjoyment of all ages and I'm also doing a reading from select passages from the chapter "Piper at the Gates Of Dawn" from the Kenneth Graeme book "The Wind in The Willows". We are going to listen to a series of songs that will have us look within ourselves to either be self reflective or perhaps acknowledge shortcomings we might have. Or we might confront certain fears or concerns we may carry around in our minds. Or we simply might lose ourselves in a daydream or a projection of something unusual. This is inner reflection though perhaps not with a goal of self realization. Subconscious or unconscious thoughts can be powerful and may be a prevalent factor in how we live day by day or how we interact with others. This is music of our inner dilemma. Hello and welcome to episode 29 of Sing! Dance! Act! Thrive!I am so excited for today’s guest, Canada’s Punk Rock Queen Bif Naked! I have been a fan of hers since her 1996 self-titled debut album and her follow up I Bificus with the hits “Daddy’s Getting Married,” “Spaceman” and “Moment of Weakness.” In 2001 her album Purge produced by Desmond Child had even more hits including “I Love Myself Today,” “Chokin on the Truth” and one of my favourites “Tango Shoes.” The albums and tours continued and in 2011 she released BIF NAKED FOREVER: Acoustic Hits and Other Delights and in 2016she released her autobiography I Bificus. In the book, she shares her journey from being born in secret to a teenager living in India, the product of a Canadian girl and a British boy. She was rejected by both families, hidden away in a mental hospital and adopted by missionaries and then moved to North America. She began what she recalls with ironic humour as a “charmed life.” Targeted by girl gangs and facing other abusive situations, she escaped this early life by joining a punk rock band and leaving on tour, where she married the drummer and hit a downward spiral that found her on the floor of a Vancouver drug den.Through it all, her creative personality and unstoppable humour were her weapons of self-defence. Bif showcased her life’s journey in tattoo ink across her body and, with her unique ability to transform her true life stories into song lyrics, she found her voice as a solo artist, started her own record company and at twenty-three years of age became an international recording artist.Throughout her remarkable career, armed with her singular talent and instantly identifiable look, Bif would captivate the imagination of audiences and media alike, releasing nine albums and twenty-one videos. She embarked on seemingly endless international tours, several feature films and multiple television roles, only to be struck down with breast cancer at the age of 37. Bif would discover her passion for advocacy, as a triumphant survivor and someone who helps others first. When I started this podcast she was on my wish list of people I wanted on so when I got the opportunity I jumped at it. She now lives in Toronto so her publicist Eric Alper asked if I wanted to go to her house for the interview. Um, yes, yes I would like that very much. Lol. I love her.So of course she was fabulous and we are best friends now so I know that you will enjoy our lovely conversation. For links and transcript visit http://singdanceactthrive.com/029
