Fying solo this week with SeanGeek. What is Blogger and why we have one? We talk all about websites, landing sites, and that perfect Podcast Hosting company we all miss called Podiant. There would be no SeanGeek and FastFret Podcast without Meet The Geeks and why we all still owe a complete debt to Corey Toews and his creation and how it lives on in all of us. Snake oil salespeople have never gone away. They used to be barking out from the side of a travelling wagon, skipping from town to town, shilling and making people believe mis-truths. They are hidden in terrestrial radio, record labels, get rich podcasting schemes, fad diets, and even the great Adam Levine works for them. What would Happy Harry Hardon have to say. Maybe it's time he is broken out from his incarceration to shout from the mountains and expose them all. Or at least maybe SeanGeek here can throw a little shade on them. What am I reading and what is on the docket? I just finished 5 books from Leigh Bardugo in her Grishaverse series. What did I think about it and what do I think about Leigh's worldbuilding? I have also picked up Heart's On Fire by Michael Barclay and I cannot wait to dive in. In this episode, we meet with Mark Steadman, a pioneer of the podcast industry. Mark's serious about podcasts, and his passion for the industry and for his fellow podcasters took him on an incredible, decade long journey of discovery. After creating, in his words, “the world's most technically advanced podcast that no one listened to,” Mark decided to change lanes and begin his own hosting platform. In 2016, Mark started Podiant, a podcast hosting, analytics, and distribution company. In the spring of 2021, he sold that business to Castos. Dive deeper into how he discovered his competitive edge in the market, as well as some of the big mistakes he made along the way. Not only will you learn the fundamentals of how to set up a great podcast for your business, but you'll also learn how he turned a passion project into the perfect acquisition for every party involved, all within six years. Hosted and Produced by Bryan Barletta and Evo TerraAudio Engineering by Ian PowellThis is The Download, the most important business news from the world of podcasting, I'm Bryan Barletta. And I'm Evo Terra. Today we're covering the entirety of the podcast acquisition and funding that happened in 2021. Let's get started.Libsyn, the public podcast hosting platform founded in 2004 had an incredibly active year. They started by raising 25 million dollars and they definitely put it to work, buying podcast creation platform Auxbus, subscription and membership platform Glow for 1.2 million dollars, host and announcer read self-serve advertising marketplace Advertisecast for 30 million dollars, and longtail podcast advertising marketplace PODGO. With the leadership team from Advertisecast taking a more active role, and former board chairman and investor Brad Tirpak coming on as CEO, Libsyn has a chance to really upgrade their image if they can match the momentum of their competitors and integrate a non-trivial amount of companies into one of the oldest podcast platforms still active.Audacy, started the year as Entercom, and after 53 years, rebranded. Kicking it of by acquiring longtail self-serve ad marketplace Podcorn for $22.5m. Podcorn gives Audacy micro-influencer reach contrasting with their higher-profile owned and repped shows. For $40m, they also bought “an exclusive, perpetual license of WideOrbit's digital audio streaming and podcasting technology and related assets and operations. Audacy will continue to operate WO Streaming under the name AmperWave.” Today, Audacy builds and hosts their radio broadcast to podcasts solution with Triton Digital's Omny Studio, owned by close competitor iHeartMedia, while hosting their Cadence13 and Pineapple Street Media shows on Spotify's Megaphone. For a company reporting around $16m in revenue per quarter from podcasting alone, expect to see them fully migrate to AmperWave and bulk up the public offering for the platform. While Global, the UK-based media & entertainment group and parent company of DAX Digital Ad Exchange does offer podcast hosting capabilities, their main appeal for publishers has been monetization opportunities. So acquiring podcast hosting, analytics, and monetization platform Captivate, which is IAB certified and has strong brand appeal for indie podcasts, shows Global's drive to be more accessible. Ad exchanges thrive on inventory, so the purchase of Remixd, which “automatically converts text articles into audio files” provides Global a quick path to more ad supply. With Captivate off the table, hosting platform Buzzsprout, that serves over 100k podcasts, becomes even more appealing for a longtail inventory play.Earlier in the year, iHeartMedia acquired audio ad technology company Triton Digital for 230 million dollars from E.W. Scripps, which purchased Triton Digital for 150 million dollars in 2018 and Omny Studio, part of Triton Digital, in 2019. Like Audacy, iHeart currently uses Spotify's Megaphone to host their podcasts. Getting all their assets to their own platform is clearly on the horizon for iHeart, especially with Triton Digital offering radio broadcast-to-podcast capabilities. Coupled with iHeart's acquisition of Voxnest/Spreaker in 2020 and the announcement of their ad marketplace in both 2020 and 2021, the only offering iHeart currently lacks to compete with their direct competitors, is an attribution product. Will they build it internally like Adswizz or will they acquire a solution? With over 70% of podcasts on Spotify serving from their hosting platform Anchor, Spotify continues their plans of going wide on audio by buying audiobook distributor Findaway and podcast hosting platform Whooshkaa, which specializes in creating podcasts from radio broadcasts. Whooshkaa will be integrated into hosting platform Megaphone, which Spotify purchased last November for 235 million dollars. While Spotify is unlikely to retain Audacy and iHeartMedia as clients, as both purchased their own radio broadcast-to-podcast technology this year, Spotify will continue to attract publishers looking for those features as part of a complete offering. With Whooshkaa acquired, RedCircle is the last independent hosting platform with dynamic ad insertion and programmatic offerings. And SGRecast from StreamGuys is the only independent company offering a broadcast-to-podcast technology. How long either will remain independent is a very good question.Acast started the year by acquiring US podcast technology startup RadioPublic. Keeping inline with their creator-focused image, the main appeal was “RadioPublic's Listener Relationship Management platform, which allows podcasters to foster even deeper relationships with fans”, which played nice with the beta launch of Acast+, their subscription offering. Over the summer, Acast went public, which is it's own kind of acquisition. And though it falls slightly outside of 2021, when Podnews editor James Cridland announced Amazon's late December 2020 acquisition of Wondery for around 300 million dollars, he made the prediction that ART19 would be the logical next acquisition. After all, former CEO of Wondery, Hernan Lopez was an investor in the platform and all Wondery shows were hosted on ART19. In June of this year, the deal for Amazon to acquire ART19 was officially announced. Nice crystal ball, James. And if that wasn't enough, here's a quick rundown of some of the other deals from 2021: In the podcast player space, the Breaker podcast app team joined Twitter while Maple Media acquired the app itself, Daily Mail and General Trust or DMGT acquired discovery focused podcast app Entale, and Automattic, owner of Tumblr and WordPress.com acquired the podcast app Pocket Casts. In the hosting platform space Castos acquires another hosting platform, Podiant and Sounder acquired audio discovery and analytics company Podnods. In the technology space attribution company Podsights acquired linksharing company pod.link and podcast database Podchaser acquired chart and ranking tool Podcharts and listener review tool Podrover. And in the content production space Amaze Media Labs acquired podcast production company Jam Street Media. Finally, a lighting round of the funding deals that happened, to give you some insight into the money moving into the podcasting space.ProductionCopenhagen-based Podimo raised $15.3m in February and $78m in November.Audio Up Media raised $12m.WaitWhat raised $12m.Sounder raised $2.15m in March and $9.5m in December.Casted raised $7m.French-based Paradiso Media raised $5.9m.Quake Media raised $3.5m.Equity Mates Media raised $900k.UK-based Auddy raised $610k.Creator ToolsVerbit raised $157m.Descript raised $30m.Podcastle raised $7m.Zencastr raised $4.6m.Podchaser raised $4m.Riverside raised $2.5m.Hosting & MonetizationInstreamatic raised $6.1m.RedCircle raised $6m.Podsights raised $4m.Backtracks raised $1.6m.Castos raised $756k.Podmetrics and Podcast Network Asia raised $750k.You'll find links to everything we just covered in the episode details, and subscribe to The Download in your inbox so you never miss an episode.I'm Bryan BarlettaAnd I'm Evo TerraSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

What are the therapeutic effects and why should you go and support professional licensed Massage Therapists? Massage is so much more than a physical fine tuning. (20:04) And what about Reiki? Just how is your body’s energy tied into your physical health? (25:30) And taking it another step further, we talk DDP Yoga. (28:08) And as far off on the tangent as we get, we tie all this into a dream and get an update on the book series SeanGeek is working on and how this all ties into it. Laura Dodsworth is the author of A State of Fear, Bare Reality, Manhood and Womanhood, she has also written for The Sunday Times, The Telegraph, The Mail on Sunday, The Guardian and Spiked. You can find her on Twitter at @BareReality. This is a book about fear. Fear of a virus. Fear of death. Fear of losing our jobs, our democracy, our human connections, our health and our minds. It's also about how the government weaponised our fear against us – supposedly in our best interests – until we were one of the most frightened countries in the world. But why did the government deliberately frighten us? How has this affected us as individuals and as a country? Who is involved in the decision-making that affects our lives? How are behavioural science and nudge theory being used to subliminally manipulate us? How does the media leverage fear? What are the real risks to our wellbeing? Ahead of any official inquiry into the handling of the Covid-19 pandemic, Laura Dodsworth explores all these questions and more, in a nuanced and thought-provoking discussion of an extraordinary year in British life and politics. With stories from members of the general public who were impacted by fear, anxiety and isolation, and revealing interviews with psychologists, politicians, scientists, lawyers, Whitehall advisers and journalists. A State of Fear calls for a more hopeful, transparent and effective democracy. The Audience podcast is back with exciting news: Castos has acquired Podiant podcast hosting! Matt & Craig sit down to discuss the acquisition and what it means for the Castos family. We'll learn that it goes beyond acquiring more customers and injecting them into the Castos brand, but that customers from both sides will benefit. Along with new Podiant customers remaining on the same billing plan, they will also get all of the great unlimited features of Castos podcast hosting, too! Castos customers get something out of the deal too -- we'll soon have native integration to Descript through the infrastructure already in place at Podiant. Matt is very excited about this. Learn more about Descript on our YouTube channel. Enjoy today's episode and please feel free to contact us with any questions about the acquisition. Award-winning human resources conference speaker and author of "Solving the Productivity Puzzle – How People Engagement, Innovation and Performance Will Transform Work", Tim Ringo talks about the 3-dimensional definition of productivity, making the future of work more fun, how humans interact with machines and how to encourage more productivity at work. Graham and Tim open the conversation with an insight into the productivity paradox. > What we're seeing now, and this is what I found in my research, is that the technology in the past 10 years has been overwhelming people and organisations have not been very good at aligning people to that technology, and investing in them to align to that technology. We're really only getting back to where we were, you know, say early 2000s, in terms of levels of investment in that space. Tim explains that there is more to the meaning of productivity and how we measure them in these modern times. >There's a small number, and growing number, of companies that are realising that, you know, people are much more complex, and that if you can engage them in what it is you do, get them to buy into your purpose and mission as an organization, you suddenly get a different kind of workforce. There are ones that show up, not only to produce what you ask them to do but they produce more and they enjoy doing it. Tim also talks about the difference in the progress of technology at home and at work. > I think we're gonna have to see organisations change their policies, change their offices, and change their thinking to do that. Technology is going to be that that kind of facilitator of these things to keep people productive. So we're Jetsons at home but we're not Jetsons work yet and we have to fix that. Graham asks Tim about his observations on how people work and how they are managed in different cultures. >The first thing that you have to recognise is you need to show the person you understand that for them is inappropriate. Then, I think the second thing is then behaving in a way that you build trust with that person, to show that you do get it and that you can be reasonable and respectful. Graham and Tim finish the podcast talking about pro-tirement and what it means to pro-tire. > The UK Chief Medical Officer a couple years ago, and this is in the book as well, did a study on men who do some sort of gainful employment till about 70 and it shows the vast majority of them will live to 90, as long as you didn't have any underlying and it's really good for you, apparently, to keep doing things. Adam McGibbon is an activist and writer originally from Belfast. He has a long history of being involved in social and environmental protest. He was Vice President of Queen's University Belfast Students' Union during the successful 2010-11 campaign to stop university tuition fee increases. He has been involved in direct action protests against tax avoiders, occupations, and recently ran a successful 3-year campaign to stop the British Government giving billions in taxpayer's money to fossil fuel projects overseas. He is now the UK Campaign Lead for Market Forces, an organisation that stops banks from funding projects that harm the environment. We spoke about the right to protest, why it is important, the #killthebill protests and whether violence is ever an acceptable form of protest! Houston Wade is a Geologist, Astrophysics professor, a current Harvard grad student in History, and the proud owner of a driveway full of shitboxes all in various states of repair. I found Houston's work first after reading at thread by him on Twitter about the GameStop saga and had to get him on the show. Since December of last year GameStop had been on a crazy ride as a company and the redditors on Wall Street Bets have been ridiculed and parodied, but they may be onto something. We talked all about what he describes as the “baby squeeze” in January, naked shorting, counterfeit shares, the SEC, and the DTCC insurance policy worth $67 trillion. I first heard of Jen when she decided to primary Debbie Wasserman Schultz, former chair of the DNC, and one of the individuals involved in the Hillary Clinton DNC debacle. Although she was unsuccessful, she has now started a YouTube show as part of fighting for the same issues she campaigned on. We got into corporate media corruption, Julian Assange, freedom of speech, how the media controls a narrative and much, much more! Every good album you love has that killer track – even albums with wall-to-wall bangers, you'll usually find the best bops around track 9 (sorry for the language; I'm too old to talk about music now). If you're new to a band, the hope is that the single is what gets you into the album. At least that's how it used to be, before algorithms and TikTok. Again, I'm old.The same can be true of TV shows, especially half-hour sitcoms. Maybe there's an episode of The Office you were recommended, or perhaps you caught the soup nazi episode of Seinfeld back in the day.In some cases it's not a matter of quality, but of how well a part reflects the whole. For me, it's the episode of Fawlty Towers with Mrs Richards, the troublesome guest with the hearing aid she won't turn on because it wears the batteries down.Mrs Richards in Fawlty TowersWe can take this principle and adapt it to podcasting. Every podcast has an episode that typifies it; that says “if you like this, you'll probably like the whole thing”. That might be your most recent episode, but it probably isn't, especially if your most recent episode was a bonus show or you went off piste from what you normally discuss.I have a podcast about the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, except since March last year it's not really been about Hitchhiker's at all, but about coming up with writings that fit Douglas Adams' style. Our episodes are less frequent and often a bit raucous, because they feel like special occasions and the chance for the four of us who record it to get together (virtually) and share a drink… or twelve.I'm really proud of each episode we put out, because each one is prepared, with pre-written material, and then edited to trim the fat. But if I'm telling people I have the definitive Hitchhiker's podcast, should I be pointing them to my latest episode?A gateway episode is a great way of showcasing the episode you feel best shows off your work. It's better than a trailer because it's a full episode, and you can chop and change your gateway episode as you see fit.So how do you make a gateway episode? The bad news is there isn't a standard for it. There's currently no way in your podcast feed to specify that a particular episode is the one you want new listeners to try first, and I'd strongly advise against doing any kind of tinkering with your episode dates or numbers to try and force it to the top of Apple Podcasts, because that'll just cause endless headaches. The good news is it's something you can do on your website. Your podcast does have a website, right? This week we at Podiant released a new feature that pins featured episodes to a podcast's homepage with a special label that says “Featured episode” (which of course can be changed to say anything), but if you maintain your own podcast website, you should already be able to do this, and if you haven't considered it, give it a go… it might just be a matter of adding a widget or dragging and dropping a block.Make sure the episode is featured as high up on your homepage as possible, and that listeners can play it directly from the page. You don't want them to have to click a link to another page, as you'll start to lose the thread. Get a big, bold, embeddable player for that episode – Apple and Spotify both provide them if your hosting company doesn't – and put it above the fold (above the bit where most people have to scroll down the page). Make sure it works well on a mobile, as that's probably where most of your visits will come from. What should be in your gateway episode?Don't make a special episode just for new listeners. A trailer is a good way to give people a sizzle-reel of best-bits. Your gateway episode should be one you've already picked, that you think really shows off your best work. Think about the episode you'd submit if you were applying for a podcasting award, and you had to submit just one episode.Pick one that doesn't lean too heavily on prior knowledge or in-jokes… maybe pick one that establishes a joke you call back to in later episodes. It should be one of your best-sounding episodes from a technical perspective, too.For my Hitchhiker's show, I've picked our “42nd anniversary special” as my gateway episode, because it bridges the gap between our previous episodes where we covered Adams' universe in alphabetical order, and our new format where we write new entries for the Guide. It also has the added benefit of making us look good, because we were able to plug my appearance on BBC Radio 4. (It's also our last pre-pandemic episode, and gosh, you can hear the difference!)What's your gateway episode?I'd love to know what you're using as your gateway episode, and if you already have one, how you're promoting it. - What's new with Podiant, plus a roundup of where we've been, and a look at Mark's place in Clubhouse.
In this episode, we talk to author and marketing legend, Seth Godin. His latest book, The Practice: Shipping Creative Work, is just chock full of brilliant stuff and is a must-read for everyone who wants to get "unstuck" and move forward with their goals in life. > I think that we are way happier when the work we do becomes our dream, not the other way around. Seth also talks about what being on the hook means and why it is important to commit to do your best work at all times. > This idea that our work pays forward, that it gives us a chance to make an impact as we'd like to have an impact made for us. I think that makes it a perfect circle. Focusing on being productive and writing, Seth does not believe that there is a special tactic that can unlock it. > I find the strategy matters more than the tactic. And what's the difference? Strategy is something that doesn't change very often and that you can tell your competition about it and it won't make any difference. Curiosity is a big motivator for Seth. He outlines that skills are learned and that talent has nothing to do with how successful you can be. > I don't believe in talent. I think almost nothing is innate. I've never met a six month old kid who could ride a bike or juggle or speak a sentence that was worth listening to. So somewhere along the way, we learn all these things. They're skills and being curious is definitely a skill. We end the conversation by talking about willpower and how developing this skill is essential to productivity. Don't forget to drop by Akimbo's Creative Worskhop. Read more about what Seth is up to on his blog. Graham Allcott is the founder of time management training company Think Productive. Emma Knaggs, the grassroots leader at Make Votes Matter was my guest on today's show. Make Votes Matter are a single issue campaign for the reform of the UK voting system into a more proportional and representative one. They are a cross party group working to get more and more MPs on board with the idea of a PR system or something similar and hope to finally convince the Labour party to support their cause at this years conference. We talked all about how they plan to convince Labour to support their movement, why it is important to have a more representative system, and the downsides of our current First Past The Post system. As an early 40th birthday present, my wife bought me (us) a new TV for our living room. It's gorgeous - it's a Samsung 55" QLED Q8DT 2020 model (the Costco version). Our previous TV was an 8-year-old Vizio that she bought when she moved into the house. And it was fine. In fact, as a sports fan, I'm a little embarrassed to say that SHE noticed the old TV's age before I did. But when we got this new television mounted on the wall, the difference was JAW DROPPING. We wish we had watched the first 200 episodes of Hawaii Five-O on this new screen. I watched a special about the volcanos of Iceland - the visuals were spectacular. And the built in surround sound was so good - when there was a thunderstorm on Grey's Anatomy, our dog ran to the basement. Why do I bring this up? It's easy to think your podcast sounds fine - until you are presented with a much nicer alternative. Your sound can be better. Your content can be better. Your music can be better. And by you, I mean all of us. If you'll indulge me for a quick plug, I am running a special through the end of the year. If you want a professional critique of your podcast, I'll listen to an entire episode and give you detailed feedback and suggestions for improvements. Normally I charge $99 for this - but it's only $49 through the end of the year. Your boys are all grown up. James and Brad performed the latest episode of Swinging Through Spider-Man live at the Birmingham Podcast Festival over the past weekend. Their radio silence is because of the hearty prep required to bring such a magnificent showcase of all things Spidey to an adoring crowd. We hit issue #30. Peter Parker's life starts to get rough as forces collide. His Aunt is ill, his ex-girlfriend seems to have moved on, and it's getting to him. He's even missed a new criminal causing widespreas havoc. The Cat is loose, and he's got a big victim in mind. The day was marked with the sad news of the passing of Steve Ditko. Steve, of course, was the genius behind Spider-Man - truly. While the work of Stan Lee should never be discounted, the reason that Spidey is Spidey is more than likely because of Ditko. RIP Steve. We wouldn't be doing this without you. We'd like to take this time to place on record our thanks to Podiant, Mark Steadman, Jon Hickman and the Mockingbird Cinema for allowing us to live a small dream. Not only did England make the World Cup semi-final (it's coming home), but we got to perform our 'act' live to an audience. To everyone else, thank you, as always, for everything -
