Unlock the secret to fostering young minds through the magic of play with Zeba from Kindergarten Cafe, our esteemed guest for the season premiere of Pre-K Spot Talks. Together, we tackle the question: how do we champion the cause of play against the tide of an increasingly academic-driven curriculum? Zeba, with her wealth of experience from Massachusetts, illuminates the transformative role of play in early education and shares her strategic battle to embed play at the heart of learning. She offers insights on collaborating with educational leaders and using compelling research to advocate for play-based learning within her community. Her dedication shines through as she provides actionable tips for educators to persevere in prioritizing play, even when systemic changes lag.In this eye-opening discussion, we also dissect the critical difference between play and playful learning, revealing the unparalleled impact genuine play has on developing literacy and social competencies. I reveal tactics for making the benefits of play visible—think creative bulletin boards that track developmental milestones—amidst the pressures of strict school schedules and administrative expectations. Then, we shift gears to discuss how cultivating social and emotional skills in preschoolers sets the foundation for academic success in kindergarten and beyond. By the end of our conversation, it's clear that teaching children how to navigate social interactions and school routines is paramount. In part one of a two episode miniseries, Matt is joined by Kim McGibbon, the Director of the Send Relief Ministry Center in Hamilton, Ontario.   Matt and Kim discuss ministry to refugees and newcomers to Canada, as well as how to develop ministry of compassion out of a local church. Kim's heart for people in the margins of society, as well as her extensive experience in entrepreneurship and compassionate leadership, have well equipped her to serve as Send Relief's Toronto Ministry Center Director. With 20 years of ministry experience as a church planter's wife, McGibbon has previously served as a champion for both Send Toronto and the Canadian National Baptist Convention. She is married to Jason McGibbon, lead pastor of The Hamilton Fellowships—the most recent of their three church plants—and is a loving mother to four adult children: Daniel, Liam, Caroline, and T.J. Before starting a family, planting churches and engaging with other service opportunities, McGibbon started her own special events company in which she helped to merge organizations, grow small businesses and lead her team well as Vice President, eventually making her company the largest special events business in all of Canada. To learn more about Send Relief, take courses and plan a visit, checkout https://www.sendrelief.org/projects/toronto-ministry-center/.

When Covid hit, none of us could have imagined how far reaching its effects would be, nor for how long we would be grappling with the various issues raised by its influence in our lives. Toronto SEND Network ministry director and church planter's wife Kimberley McGibbon shares how Covid forever changed her life and ministry. She explains how God used Covid to return her identity to Christ, pushed her to reach out to others amidst isolation, and opened her eyes to the new opportunities for discipleship within her city. SHOW NOTES Isolation is deadly. Humble yourself and be willing to be welcomed by other ministry wives for much needed love and support. Allow yourself to grieve when people leave, but take that grief to Jesus. He knows better than anyone what it's like to be left. Covid has made unchurched people question life like never before. The harvest is ripe for the church to minister in their cities! QUOTES “In the past 20 years, lots of times people have left for different reasons. Some of them have really hurt and it is hard to still keep living open handed, but I think we have to go to Jesus with those things. He above everybody else knows what it’s like to have people leave you in the middle of a very terrible time. His friends left him on the cross, Peter denied him. If anyone is going to understand it’s going to be Jesus.” -Kimberley McGibbon “There are losses behind us, and those years were hard years, but if anything, they refined us. They refined our faith, they refined our focus in ministry, and if we have eyes to see it, there are a whole lot of opportunities before us. And we may be doing it a little bit differently than we were doing it before, but maybe that’s good.” -Christine Hoover CONNECT Connect with Christine Facebook // Instagram // Books Visit How to Thrive as a Pastor’s Wife to access Christine's resources for ministry wives like you! Jenny McGibbon is a disabled graphic designer from Scotland, predominantly living with ME/CFS. She was born with a birth defect known as gastroschisis, and as a result she also lives with short bowel syndrome, chronic internal bleeding, and iron deficiency anemia. At the age of 16, she found herself in and out of hospital almost weekly — something that would continue on for some years. She couldn't relate to her peers anymore, and felt alienated in the new medical space she suddenly found herself occupying. Often the youngest person in the waiting room (by several decades), it became abundantly clear that none of the marketing, pamphlets, posters, or websites she was directed to were aimed at her demographic — or acknowledging her unique experience. So she took to the Internet to share her story — This Thing They Call Recovery. With a blog read in over 90 different countries, translated into over 50 languages, and a social media following of over 25k, Jenny is trying to get the word out: chronic illness can look like anything, happen to anyone, and everyone deserves to feel supported. Now in her mid-20s, Jenny is determined to help make sure no young person feels like they're dealing with health issues alone, and is committed to challenging the public perceptions of disability, sparking complex conversations and uniting Spoonies and their loved ones together. As a graphic designer, she uses a mix of visuals and copy to translate how life with illness feels, particularly when one is young. As she says: “I think there needs to be much more information out there about health — and ill health — presented in a friendly and approachable manner. Chronic illness affects your life as much as your body, and I think it's time more people knew about it.” Tune in as Jenny shares: how her chronic illness journey began in childhood, with gastroschisis and bowel surgeries that from the ages of two to 16 she was largely well, but that at 16 flares surfaced again through chronic bleeding in her intestines — which also caused iron deficiency anemia that she was eventually diagnosed with ME/CFS, but had to deal with a lot of pushback from the medical establishment how she got an ME/CFS diagnosis the symptoms that impact her most acutely — pain and fatigue a discussion of the social complexities of living with disability — from gratitude and “cures” to comfort zones, accommodations, accessibility, pride, and “passing” why she owes her life to the NHS how and why she started This Thing They Call Recovery what disabled identity means to her what the community she's cultivated means to her why there doesn't always have to be a lesson or a silver lining in the disability experience — sometimes it just is what it is

Having a chronic illness as a young adult can be isolating. Healthy peers don’t understand and the medical world feels designed for older people. Then one day, you find people like you online. These online communities weren’t always there – a few brave pioneers paved the way for these safe spaces to take flight. In this episode, Stefanie Grant and Jenny McGibbon discuss how they started sharing their health journeys online in their early 20s. For both Stefanie, who has facial pain disorders and Fibromyalgia, and Jenny, who has Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME) and Short Bowel Syndrome, their blogs began as a personal outlet during a time they felt alone in their health battles. As their journeys evolved, so did their blogs, becoming online communities that now serve thousands. Together, they discuss their responsibilities as leaders within the space, the delicate balance that exists between positivity and authenticity, and how they attempt to hold space for others while recognizing everyone has a different lived experience.

The instrument described within is not what most people today would picture when they hear guitar. Instead of the six stringed Romantic or Spanish guitar - the direct ancestor to today’s classical and steel stringed instruments - the instrument described is what is now known as an English or Scottish guitar. This instrument had six courses of strings, but was a smaller teardrop shaped instrument strung with metal wire and tuned in open tunings. It is the ancestor to and most closely resembles the modern cittern or German waldzither. With its early wire strings and open tunings it was less suited to the more harmonically complex and delicate music played on the gut strung Spanish instrument. Nevertheless, it enjoyed widespread use as an instrument for popular and folk music. The ‘Instructions’ portion of the text is relatively brief. It explains the tuning of the instrument (an open C major chord) and a few rudimentary techniques. Interestingly it describes a simple strumming technique and also suggests an alternating plucking with the thumb and forefinger, a common technique on the lute and other early stringed instruments now known as ‘thumb under’ that approximates the effect of a plectrum. The musical selections themselves are mostly presented in simple settings. The music is provided in staff notation, rather than the tablature more commonly used for stringed instruments of the era. All of the music is transposed to C to fit the open chord tuning of the instrument. The texture is simple, mostly simple monophonic melody line with the odd open string drone or strummed open string chord for emphasis, when harmonically appropriate. In all but a few instances the music only calls on the player to strike notes on immediately adjacent strings, most often in melodic parallel thirds or a melody over an open drone string. There is none of the counterpoint, moving basslines, or harmonic figuration that is typical of Baroque or Romantic guitar repertoire. These factors along with the popular tunes suggests to me that the music was intended for an amateur audience and intended to be strummed as much as plucked. One could view the tutor as analogous to modern commercial ukulele books full of popular and folk tunes in simple arrangements. The various Moorish tunes are interesting and of particular note. They are all extremely short and simple with a strong pastoral sound of open ringing intervals evocative of hunting horns and reveilles, perhaps intended to conjure the image of the trumpets popularly associated with the military bands of the Ottoman Empire. In light of the above notes on the instrument itself, I have played the selected tunes on a modern steel string acoustic guitar, with a mix of pick and thumb and forefinger as appropriate. Today I'm talking to Katie McGibbon, a Performance Scientist in Swimming currently working in Australia. She shares with me one of the most important skills that should be developed by athletes and a little about her PhD research. Though Katie is originally from the UK she is currently staying in Australia for good reasons. She tells me that there's really no better place than the Queensland Academy of Sport to study high level swimmers like she does. It's a culture where everyone grows up swimming so the talent pool is deep - making for plenty of research subjects. One of her research projects she shares with me focuses on pacing profiles and she tells me about how people pace in competitions versus training. Though many of the identified strategies that could help swimmers be faster seem obvious on the surface, the culture and psychology holding people back is deeper than the data. Because the pool is inherently not a laboratory with precise measurements and instruments; Katie shares some ways on how she measures a person's pace. As well as a unique strategy being used by swimmers that results in better pacing profiles.

It is here where we record a special edition of By Association, sitting by the pool to take an hour out to talk about his career and how brand partnerships are important to growth. He shares the importance of the current partnership between BOSE and the Mercedes F1 team and how he measures success. What is apparent in the talk is the change the world of brand marketing is going through, especially with the rise of online and social media. Join us as we understand what it takes to activate a brand outside of its sales locations, and the journey Ian took from Australia working at Westfield, to traveling the world growing one of the biggest brands in audio technology!

Katherine McGibbon is a mother, advocate, author and playwright who is passionate about helping others. She was raised in Canada by her mother, who instilled solid family values and taught Katherine and her siblings the importance of standing up for what is right and speaking out about what is not. Katherine was raised in church and to be strong and independent. And yet, when she was 21 years old, Katherine became a victim of sex trafficking. After nearly a year of being trapped, Katherine successfully escaped and returned to life in Houston, never looking back to a life of hell and trauma. After many years of living in silence, Katherine decided to journal what happened to her as a way of dealing with the horrific experience. That journal became a book. That book became a stage play. Thus, she has mustered the strength to join the movement against sex trafficking. Partnering with several nonprofit organizations, Katherine’s ultimate goal is to raise awareness, fight for those who are being trafficked and mentor those who have overcome it. She has finally found her voice and speaks passionately to faith-based organizations, medical professionals, and politicians. Katherine believes that sharing her story contributed to her healing process. She is now helping others to creatively share their stories in a way that does not re-victimize or re-traumatize survivors.  Katherine‘s book, “Destined” can be purchased here: For More info on Katherine and to connect with her: https://www.kathymcgibbon.com/

Ontario’s Pauline McGibbon is appointed the Commonwealth’s first woman lieutenant governor. Pauline Emily Mills was born in Sarnia, Ontario on October 20, 1910. She married her high school love, Donald McGibbon, in 1933, with whom she graduated from the University of Toronto’s Victoria College. At a time when women were just starting to break through gender barriers, McGibbon achieved many firsts. She was the first woman chancellor of the University of Guelph and the first woman chancellor of the University of Toronto. When she sat on the boards of George Weston, IBM, Imasco and Mercedes-Benz, she was the first woman to do so. On January 17, 1974, when the Canadian government announced that Mills would sit as Ontario’s lieutenant governor, she made history three times over. Not only was she the province’s and Canada’s first female to take on the vice-regal’s role, but she was the first in the entire Commonwealth. She held the position from April 10, 1974 until 1980. Before, during and after her post as the queen’s representative, McGibbon was actively involved in arts and cultural activities, chalking up yet another first in 1972 as the first woman president of the Canadian Conference of the Arts. McGibbon suffered a stroke in 1995 and died in Toronto in December 2001. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

The outcasts, the sometimes forgotten, the voices waiting to be heard – REAL everyday people, perfectly flawed. She believes that everyone has a story worth sharing. Often times, we’re too afraid of being judged by others so we keep our testimonies to ourselves – but what if your story wasn’t only written for you? About Resetting Your Journey:: Presenting women with encouraging words to say and influential moves they are making in the world, while answering the question of how God pressed the reset button on their journey in life. In today's podcast, I spend time time talking with Jason and Kimberley McGibbon of Hamilton, Ontario. Jason and Kimberley moved to Hamilton five years ago after having taken their son Liam to the children's hospital there for some vital treatment. As a pastor in Milton, he knew their fellowship would eventually send a planter out to launch a new work. He just didn't know the planter sent out would be himself. God has blessed Jason and Kimberley as they seek to engage the culture of Hamilton. We talk a little about the uniqueness of Hamilton and the church culture (or lack thereof) in the city. Jason is a gifted musician and painter. I discuss with him the subject of the arts and the church and how many opportunities are missed by local congregations when it comes to artistic engagement. Jason and Kimberley have four children - Daniel, Caroline, Liam and T.J. They range in ages from 21 to 10. T.J. has been given a unique opportunity and Jason and Kimberley see this as a Kingdom- focused outlet for God's glory. T.J. always desired to be an actress and God has opened doors for her to do voice work and star in some movies. Some are faith-based films, like the newly released "The Masked Saint." Others appeal to a broader audience, such as the soon to be released "X-Men: Apocalypse." We discuss how God has used this ten year old girl to open up conversations on television and movie sets about Christ and the challenges of parenting in this world. This week on Through the Gates, IU associate professor Murray McGibbon joins host Jim Shanahan to discuss his upcoming "original pronunciation" production of Shakespeare's "King Lear". McGibbon utilized a grant from IU's New Frontiers in the Arts and Humanities Program to develop the new version of the play. The New Frontiers program encourages scholars to produce innovative works of scholarship and creative activities. McGibbon took that directive and used it to create a version of the play that utilizes a version of English pronunciation that most closely resembles what Shakespeare's actors would have used in the first run of the production in 1606. In this interview, Shanahan will ask McGibbon about the development of the play, how original pronunciation works and the challenges for both the actors involved and McGibbon as a director #artsandhumanities
