"Good podcasting is about generously communicating and showing up for your listener and being able to deliver them really good value. " - Mark SteadmanIf you're a podcaster, new or experienced, this podpast episode will change the way you approach your craft. This episode with Mark Steadman was an absolute masterclass in podcasting. His insights on putting the listener first have completely reshaped the way I think about crafting episodes. I've always believed in respecting the listener's time, but Mark took it to a whole new level—showing how everything from mic technique to episode titles plays a role in delivering a great experience. One of my biggest takeaways was how powerful it is to speak directly to one listener rather than addressing a broad audience. That subtle shift in language builds a stronger connection and trust. Also, his thoughts on sharpening the axe before starting—a lesson I've often ignored—really resonated. I tend to jump in headfirst, but Mark's advice on preparation is something I'll be applying moving forward.Key TakeawaysRespect the Listener's Time – Your audience is giving up their valuable time for you. Don't waste it with poor audio quality or irrelevant content. Put the Listener First – From your content to your marketing, everything should be designed with your audience in mind. Titles & Show Notes Matter – Your episode title and description should grab attention and be optimized for searchability. Speak to One Listener – Use singular language (“you” instead of “guys”) to build a stronger connection. Preparation Makes a Difference – Spending time planning your podcast (listener persona, content structure, etc.) will save you time and improve quality in the long run. Chapters & Timestamps02:00 - Why Everything is About the Listener – The key to a great podcast.07:00 - Respecting the Listener's Time – Why quality matters.10:00 - Speaking to One Listener – How language builds connection.19:00 - The Importance of Preparation – How planning saves time.26:00 - Creating Engaging Titles & Show Notes – How to make your episodes discoverable.37:00 - Final Thoughts & Takeaways – Wrapping up with key lessons. Send us a textSave Frustration. The end of 2024 is nigh! You can follow the podcast on Instagram and Threads although I am also trying to join in on BlueSky a bit. (It's a bit weird though.) Welcome to an end of year special! A compilation of some interesting parts of conversations from the podcast in 2024 that were edited out. I edit the podcast down to a more digestible length but this means I often lose parts of conversations that are really fun or insightful so here is a collection of those. I also wanted to give a shout out to some amazing independent podcasters who (like myself) do not have huge teams or budgets to put together their shows. They've also offered me some sense of camaraderie in the crazy world of obsessing over something and then making podcasts about it. You can find The Lorehounds crew and offerings which include conversations and recaps on some of the best sci-fi shows around on their website. Em at Verbal Diorama is absolutely lovely, passionate about films (especially The Mummy) and does deep dives into many popular movies. Her research skills are fantastic and she is a fellow winner on the Ear Worthy podcast awards for 2024. Her website is here. When people join the Happy Startup School's Vision 20/20 program and talk about what they want to do, one phrase pops up again and again:“I just want to be paid for being me.”But it's not always easy to get to this point. Sometimes it takes a circuitous route, as we get more and more used to showing up as our full selves and discovering what it is we truly want to do.One such alumnus of our program who's taken the long way around is creativity coach Mark Steadman. As someone who's able to do it all, from coding to design to writing, he's become a legend in our community for his ability to “ship” - to transform ideas into reality and get them out into the world. But he's tired of constantly cranking out new projects and hustling all of the time. He wants to take a break from constantly “doing” and allow himself to “be” more instead. He now wants to use his knowledge, experience, and skills to help other creative people unlock their own creativity. He's realised that that's the thing that brings him the most joy.But to do that, he needs to put other projects to rest. And that's tough. To make this change, he needs to give himself permission.Carlos and Laurence talk to Mark about what it's like to be a “relentless creative” who has constantly made and shelved projects while he's discovered what he really wants to do now. They discuss what it's like to constantly put out new projects while you try and find “your thing”, and what that's meant in terms of finding his purpose. And they explore whether it's possible to be paid for just being ourselves. They also ask him how he feels about putting all of his different creative endeavours in one place, under his own name for the first time, so that he's finally embracing his role as a creativity coach.

Like many developers, Mark Steadman began working in web development with just a couple of goals in mind: write something that runs and passes a test. No major thought for those using the interface he created.  Mark's perspective changed when he sat with a few folks who were blind or had low vision, and watched as they used assistive technology for the web and attempted to navigate a site he'd developed. Their struggle to tackle basic web functions against inaccessible code was Mark's wake-up moment and his inspiration to close the gap between emerging developers and accessibility education.  In this episode, Chuck and Robbie talk with Mark about his passion for accessibility, where most web accessibility issues originate, practical tips for incorporating accessibility into developer workflow, and why accessibility means more than checking a box, meeting quota, and passing a test. Key Takeaways [00:44] - A quick intro to Mark.  [02:52] - A whiskey review - Angel's Envy Bourbon Port Finish.  [11:47] - How Mark became an accessibility specialist.  [19:28] - Where the web accessibility issue originates.  [27:41] - How to make data visualization accessible.  [34:29] - The major accessibility complaint we fail to consider with JavaScript frameworks. [36:17] - How to keep developers and frameworks on the right track with accessibility.  [44:22] - A Star Wars-themed whatnot.  [50:37] - Why Mark likes college football (and their stadiums).  Quotes [01:50] - “I feel like there's a gap in the field right now where developers are kind of not being reached out to from the accessibility side of things. So my passion in both my job and on the side too, I write for accessibility as well, is to fill that gap.” ~ @Steady5063 [38:53] - “That's my biggest advocacy for automation, is it helps developers learn accessibility on the fly.” ~ @Steady5063 [01:00:08] - “If you are a developer that's listening to this, take the time to put accessibility as a priority. As much as everybody in the world is going to tell you that priority for accessibility is not there, find time.” ~ @Steady5063 Links Mark Steadman Fidelity Investments  JavaScript Angel's Envy - Port Wine Whiskey Kentucky Straight  Rivian Old Forester  State Farm Deque Systems  DEV Community Jira React Angular Vue Ember.js ARIA JSX Sarah L. Today on The Download, Libsyn grows monetization, LinkedIn launches a podcast network, and what the new Privacy Sandbox feature for Android means for marketers. Let’s get started. Libsyn has bought another podcast representation firm, this time acquiring PAR - Podcast Ad Reps. With the acquisition LibSyn brings around 120 podcasts that were currently under representation with PAR under the LibSyn-owned AdvertiseCast banner, further building out the company’s monetization arm. According to Libsyn CEO Brad Tirpak in the official press release: “With the acquisitions of AdvertiseCast in June 2021 and now PAR, Libsyn is well-positioned to continue to rapidly scale in the podcast advertising market, which PWC estimates will reach around $3.5 billion by 2025. We plan to continue to invest in our award-winning hosting platform, expand both our host-read and programmatic advertising efforts, and look for new ways to make Libsyn the preferred destination for both creators and advertisers.” All of this continues to show another side of Libsyn, a company that previously swore it would never have a free hosting platform and was anti-targeted advertising is now a large, tech-focused ad platform. Australian podcast producer LiSTNR has branched out into audio fiction. From Radio Today’s Kim Napier: “LiSTNR is investing in audio fiction with book adaptations by Australian authors to bring audiences compelling audio stories, with Bryden Media casting Australian actors to deliver the stories in different podcast formats as episodic series or audio movies.” Both LiSTNR’s slated audio movies and standard serialized audio fiction podcast adaptations reflect a building synergy and momentum between podcasting and publishers, two factions that’ve circled each other since before the coining of the term podcast. Until now audio fiction as a genre has remained a largely under-utilized sector of podcasting. With industry moves like this, we could be seeing enough momentum building to change that for the better. Over on The Rebooting’s Substack newsletter, Brian Morrissey has published a piece titled “End of an era of ad targeting: Publishers will need closer ties to their audiences.” In addition to being an excellent overview of privacy on the web and how business has worked to take full advantage, Morrissey stresses the importance of adapting with changing tech. “Primary-engagement media will gain. As I’ve written, I believe the next phase of digital publishing will favor quality over quantity in terms of audiences. Those publishing brands that put community at their core will thrive since it easily lends itself to a direct relationship that will make those audiences far more valuable than a random collection of people who mindlessly tapped a link on their Facebook feed. There’s a reason that Squarespace found podcasts such an efficient way to acquire customers. The newsletter boom is a signal of where publishing is going.” Morrissey reflects on the very first ad sold on the internet circa 1994 as a reflection of how much online marketing has changed and what modern advertising can learn from the mistakes made back then that’re still made today. It’s time to update that profile you’ve been neglecting. Business-focused social media network LinkedIn launched a podcast network on Wednesday. The network has a dozen shows at launch that, according to protocol’s Veronica Irwin will, “...cover topics ranging from mental health to startup trends. With the announcement, LinkedIn joins the ranks of tech companies attempting to become the favorite hub of content creators and influencers.” The social network’s launch appears to have gone incredibly well, with their flagship show “Hello Monday,” gaining 4 million downloads in its first day. Over on Digiday, Ronan Shields and Seb Joseph have made a post aiming to decode the implications of Google’s nebulous new Android feature Privacy Sandbox for advertisers. “The main takeaway: Google says it will work with the industry to establish a set of technical standards that will enable ad targeting and measurement online after traditional targeting tools, like mobile identifiers, are retired on its Android devices. Why is this important? It’s pitched as the inverse of Apple’s own scorched earth plan to do something similar.” While Privacy Sandbox might be of some concern eventually, maybe, Shields and Joseph’s interpretation of existing news suggests: “...marketers needn’t panic over the latest announcement.” At the risk of this becoming a regular segment, we’ve got another article the staff of The Download recommend checking out. This week: “What is Podcasting 2.0, and why is it important” by Podcode’s Mark Steadman. While ostensibly written for podcasters, namespace changes are something the people in the business of podcasting need to be aware of, if not outright adopt. Steadman’s primer on podcasting 2.0 is a great start. The Download is a production of Sounds Profitable. In honour of Cyprian of Antioch, infamous patron saint of necromancings, we have resurrected a big old extended episode from the RFG crypts of unpublished recordings, celebrating the Sorcerer Saint Cipriano! Along the boneyard way we sing the praises of the mineral Jet, the herb Asafoetida aka Devil's Dung, the geomantic figure Cauda Draconis and the Odu Ogunda, the Major Arcana The Magician, the magics of Grimoires, and the devil Hael and the Exu of Quimbanda - the spirit said to have taught Cyprian his black magics - Exu Meia Noite. Salve! We recorded this Cyprianmas episode back in 2018. One of the reasons this one has laid in deathless slumber, awaiting reanimation, for so long was a disconcerting shift in sound quality between the two sessions in which it was recorded; the first half of the episode was captured live, the second over the interwebs. In fact, you might notice our sudden shift towards various indeterminable continental accents in the Sean Connery sibilants (we decided to favor the lithp rather than be inaudible). Perhaps the Sorcerer Saint reminds even your esteemed hosts to never take themselves too seriously…. But mostly, we are again incredibly grateful to Mark Steadman for his excellent sound wizardry in making this 'cast as listenable a pod as possible out of our old bad recording habits! Other than spruced up sound, we have decided to chop up this resurrected zombie of an episode as little as possible and present as is, was, and shall be. We hope you don't miss the new theme tune too much. Once again, the opinions expressed in these recordings are four years old at this point, and we reserve the right - like any four year-old - to abandon them in a Walmart car park if they now prove overly disagreeable or obnoxious... We sincerely hope, on this blessed Feast of Cyprian and Justina, that you find something shared, something inspiring, or simply something quite interesting in our resuscitated breath, banter, and bones to pick. May looking over your old work inspire you to new; and if you're lucky (like us!), with a lithp.

Your boys are all grown up. James and Brad performed the latest episode of Swinging Through Spider-Man live at the Birmingham Podcast Festival over the past weekend. Their radio silence is because of the hearty prep required to bring such a magnificent showcase of all things Spidey to an adoring crowd. We hit issue #30. Peter Parker's life starts to get rough as forces collide. His Aunt is ill, his ex-girlfriend seems to have moved on, and it's getting to him. He's even missed a new criminal causing widespreas havoc. The Cat is loose, and he's got a big victim in mind. The day was marked with the sad news of the passing of Steve Ditko. Steve, of course, was the genius behind Spider-Man - truly. While the work of Stan Lee should never be discounted, the reason that Spidey is Spidey is more than likely because of Ditko. RIP Steve. We wouldn't be doing this without you. We'd like to take this time to place on record our thanks to Podiant, Mark Steadman, Jon Hickman and the Mockingbird Cinema for allowing us to live a small dream. Not only did England make the World Cup semi-final (it's coming home), but we got to perform our 'act' live to an audience. To everyone else, thank you, as always, for everything -
