Lots of individuals face this problem, struggling to speak their mind in these situations. It's often daunting to express your worries, due to fearing an argument or the wish to avoid hurting the professional's emotions. However, you're a customer who is paying, and your satisfaction counts. Research by the Professional Beauty Association indicates that about 70% of unhappy clients don't return, while only 30% communicate their disappointment to the stylist or technician. Gently sharing your unhappiness might lead to a resolution, such as a minor adjustment, a redo, or even a reimbursement. Conversely, accepting a beauty service that doesn't please you can damage your self-esteem and make you less likely to try new choices.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

After leaving nursing, she began working in the professional beauty industry as a subject matter expert on infection control and public safety. She has written many articles and spoken to audiences large and small on infection control and chemical safety in the work environment and specializes in the salon and barber industry. In 2020, she became the lead grant applicant on the Cosmetology Compact, working with the Department of Defense and Council of State Governments (CSG) to develop model legislation. Leslie currently works with the CSG (Council of State Governments) on behalf of FBIC on enacting the Cosmetology Interstate Licensure Compact, securing true license mobility for cosmetologists. Previously, Leslie worked with cosmetology boards in over 30 states on the revision of infection control rules and required curriculums consistent with current science and occupational trends. Throughout Covid, she assisted states in developing re-opening guidelines and offered education in all virtual formats to help states re-open. She is a national exam item writer and participated in the Safe Nevada project as well as the Department of Labor Occupational Licensing Consortium. Today we're talking about the Cosmetology Interstate Licensure Compact. According to the Professional Beauty Association's website The Cosmetology Compact is an interstate occupational licensure compact. Interstate compacts are constitutionally authorized, legislatively enacted, legally binding agreements among states. The Cosmetology Compact will enable licensed cosmetologists to practice in all states that join the compact, rather than getting an individual license in every state in which they want to practice. Like the compact for a driver's license, each compact member state agrees to mutually recognize the practitioner licenses issued by every other member state. “Show me the data; a person without data is just another person with an opinion.” - W. Edwards Deming In some areas of the hair and beauty sector, there is a lot of accurate data. But in other areas, there's a lot of opinion and perception. And while I can be as guilty of that as anyone, it's also important to separate fact from fiction.  My guest on today's podcast is Gordon Miller, who always has a good overview of what's happening in the hairdressing industry from a business perspective.   Gordon has held many different roles throughout his career, and today he is the Chief Engagement Officer of Hairbrained (hairbrained.me). Although our conversation today is based primarily on trends and data from the United States, most of it has relevance no matter where in the world you are based. In today's podcast, we will discuss: What the data says about how the industry is in a post covid world The current trends in evolving business models The changes happening to the professional retail model… And lots more!   In this Episode: [03:57] Gordon shares an overview of his career in the hairdressing industry.  [10:24] The problem of “fake beauty news.” [11:45] What the data tells us about the current state of the hairdressing industry (you may be pleasantly surprised by the answer!). [14:48] Examples of the various niches that exist within the salon industry, and the importance of acknowledging the differences between them.  [19:18] Staff turnover in the hairdressing industry, and how to deal with it better.   [23:41] Surprising findings from the Professional Beauty Association's fall 2021 report.  [26:15] Data around the shift from salon to suite models in the post-COVID era.   [31:36] How the mindset of employees in the salon industry differs from employees in other industries.  [33:43] The approximate percentage of salons that reopened after the pandemic.  [33:59] Gordon's thoughts on why the suite model has gained traction in recent years although it has been around for a long time.  [38:53] Trends that Gordon has noticed taking place in the blowdry bar and barber shop spaces.  [44:56] The future of the salon industry through Gordon's eyes. [52:00] The percentage of hairdressers who work less than 30 hours a week.  [59:06] Comparing how different population groups have responded to changes that have taken place in the retail space since the pandemic, and what this likely means for salon retail.    Thanks so much for joining me this week. If you owned a hair salon in the late 90's or early 2000's, chances are good you bought some machines, hired some estheticians, and added “and Spa” to your business name… or at least thought about it. Over the last two decades many of those “and spas” have gone neglected, or been renovated for more hair stations. But in today's Instagram and Zoom-driven world, we're seeing renewed consumer interest in services like skin care, waxing, and injectables - especially among people in their 20s and 30s. In this episode, host Blake Reed Evans sits down with Emily Richardson for a 101 on how to recharge your salon's spa division, or start one from scratch. Emily is an  SSBC Spa Consultant, and General Manager/Co-Owner of Bella Trio Salon and Spa in Durham, North Carolina. And while stylists at salons in the Black community performed braids, twists, weaves, relaxers, and silk presses on a daily basis, most white stylists had little or no knowledge of textured hair. In the past few years this has been changing, with more beauty schools providing and requiring texture education. Textured hair is increasingly visible in the media, more women are choosing natural styles, and more children are being born with mixed heritage. But our industry still has a long way to go. Interview with Myra Reddy on the Salon Tip Tax Myra Reddy is the Director of Government Affairs and Industry Relations for the Professional Beauty Association. We asked Myra to come on specifically to talk about the “Tip Tax” A program that's been controversial in the restaurant and other service industries, but has potential to change the financial model of the salon industry.  What is the FICA Tax Tip Credit? In 1993 Congress passed the 45B FICA tax tip credit allowing restaurants to claim a dollar-for-dollar tax tip credit on the employer portion of FICA taxes that businesses pay on tips that employees receive directly from their customers. As the second-highest tipped industry, salons should receive parity with the restaurant industry in the tax code, but presently they do not. Including the salon and spa industry in this legislation could help our industry greatly. https://www.probeauty.org/advocacy/fica Connect with PBA https://www.instagram.com/probeautyassoc/ https://www.facebook.com/professionalbeautyassociation https://www.probeauty.org/ News from The Tease https://www.thetease.com/4-indigenous-owned-hair-brands-you-should-absolutely-know-about/ https://www.thetease.com/maintain-silvery-strands-with-these-5-hair-products/ https://www.thetease.com/rephairations-is-bringing-equitable-hair-education-to-the-black-community-for-the-second-year/ Find More from TheTease: Instagram: @https://www.instagram.com/readthetease/ (readthetease) Instagram: @https://www.instagram.com/kellyehlers/ (KellyEhlers) Instagram: @https://www.instagram.com/eljeffreycraig/ (eljeffreycraig) Web: http://www.thetease.com/ (TheTease.com) Email: VolumeUp@TheTease.com Credits: Volume Up is a Tease Media production. The world over the salon industry is a collection of small businesses, and in many cases, the owners of those businesses are often overwhelmed with issues around employment law, tax, health and safety updates, changing legislation, and a raft of other challenges as well as all the other fun stuff that comes with being a small business owner.  Luckily, in many countries, we are supported by industry associations that are there to offer information, support and guidance to help salon owners navigate their way through the maze as well as offering solutions and a sense of community.   Today's podcast is the second in a series of ‘three' episodes where we talk to the key representatives of associations in the United Kingdom, the United States and Australia to get an overview of the hairdressing industry in each of their respective countries, the challenges they face and the solutions they have.   My guest today is Steve Sleeper, who is the Executive Director of the Professional Beauty Association, otherwise known as the P.B.A… and in today's podcast we will discuss the hairdressing industry in the American market    In This Episode: [02:17] Welcome to the show, Steve! [03:52] Steve shares his background and how he ended up in the beauty industry. [05:17] What is the purpose of an association like P.B.A? [07:23] Steve discusses how the association is funded. [11:02] P.B.A is a national trade association with no individual state chapters. [13:33] Has COVID driven people to your door to become members? [16:42] Steve speaks about how the pandemic has affected the beauty industry. [19:20] What is the ballpark number of salons in the United States? [21:14] Steve believes the pandemic hit the independent salon business models harder than some other business models. [24:49] Steve talks about the state licensing you need in the U.S and the increase in people getting apprenticeships to learn more after cosmetology school. [27:20] What percentage of people go through beauty school and work in the industry for a long period? [30:46] Steve discusses how many independent salons versus employee-based salons there are in the United States. [34:18] Steve shares whether he believes independent salons are good for the beauty industry. [37:36] Steve believes that new stylists that have graduated from school need to go into a salon to learn before they take the step to becoming an independent salon owner. [38:47] In ten years, what do you think the hairdressing industry will look like? [41:45] Steve talks about the partnership business model and its work in the beauty industry. [45:08] Steve guesses that over 50% of salons now are doing the online booking and other software. [47:31] A certain percentage of clientele will stick with having their stylist come to them instead of going back to salons. [51:06] Does the P.B.A have the ability to impact the government level to help get changes through? [53:51] Steve speaks about what the P.B.A does to help elevate the industry. [55:34] What benefits do the hairdressers get from day one when working in a salon? [57:30] Steve shares what he believes is the best thing about the beauty industry in the United States. [58:41] Steve wants everyone to think about joining your association so you can stay abreast of what is going on in the industry. [1:00:11] Thank you for being on the show! THE Argument: Licensing in the Salon Industry

An-ongoing conversation with the industry is the proposed deregulation of cos, nails, barber and other licenses  at the state level. These conversations have continued to be in the spotlight during the COVID-19 pandemic as these licenses require professionals to keep and maintain health and safety regulations specific to each state, as we talked with Leslie Roste BSN, RN from BlueCo Brands on episode 6. License requirements are built by state boards and can vary in difficulty and breadth. These boards then require continuing education (CEUs) to maintain licensure. In states all over the country our industry has to fight laws, some that are sunsetted - meaning we need to revisit them on a regular basis, and some that appear when ‘politically' relevant for politicians because the laws are perceived as ‘overregulation and unnecessary and could work to help with funding issues, reduce the size of government or as the result of misconceptions of the industry itself” - according to https://www.probeauty.org/docs/default-source/advocacy-documents/2020/toolkit_deregulation.pdf?sfvrsn=33f6cf81_2 (PBA's deregulation toolkit ).  Here's a list of the current bills that include some sort of deregulation that are on the table:  Minnesota State Representatives introduced legislation that would allow anyone to cut and color hair without a license (https://p2a.co/v7R6Z2P (https://p2a.co/v7R6Z2P)) Arkansas state representatives introduced legislation which will allow anyone to shampoo, condition, dress, dry, style and flat iron, curl and arrange hair without a license or training (https://p2a.co/MiwjRsj (https://p2a.co/MiwjRsj))  Nevada state senators introduced legislation which will add blow-drying and curling hair to the definition of shampoo technician which can be practiced after 20 hours and doesn't require a license (https://p2a.co/5ZJa2gh (https://p2a.co/5ZJa2gh)) West Virginia State Delegate introduced a bill to prevent the Board of Barbers and Cosmetologists from regulating the use, application, or administration, by unlicensed persons whether for compensation or not of hair, nail, skin, and other beauty products that are commonly available as retail, consumer products. Interview with Mike Van den Abbeel Multi-location stylist, salon owner and political activist from Florida shares his views on over regulation. Interview with Kati Rapoza Advocacy Program Manager for the Professional Beauty Association outlines why these deregulation efforts are bad for the salon professional industry and what the association does to support stylists. It's a unique week here on MaYapinion™ on Women for Women Wednesday as I sat down with Melissa Yamaguchi. I met her on the cool, new place to be, Clubhouse! She gives so much time to others on Clubhouse giving advice about Chinese astrology and Feng Shui. Join me this week as I ask her about her journey towards Feng Shui and how it changed her life. And of course, molded her into the incredible leader she is today. Here is her bio below as well as where to find her. And don't forget to share, subscribe, and let us know your opinion too. Melissa Yamaguchi, a dynamic Energy Therapist, Feng Shui speaker and educator, travels the world teaching lessons on balance of the individual through the practice of Feng Shui. She has been a student of Feng Shui for over twenty years. Her classes and seminars are sold-out venues thanks to her humorous delivery. Described as “Erma Bombeck meets Dorothy Parker with a hard shot of truth”, Melissa utilizes humor mixed with self-awareness to encourage others to take ownership of their energy and their lives. From large corporations to post secondary education to private clients, the need for change or understanding begins with the individual-an awareness of self-knowledge. Working on your life takes a concerted focus may seem a bit daunting to keep all plates spinning simultaneously-the trick is in knowing when and how to work on them in harmony. In order to navigate successfully the journey before you, you must take into account all factors: you, your relationship with those around you, the environment, the destination and goal. The exciting possibility of Feng Shui and grasping its teaching is that once you understand your own energy, you can learn how to control your reactions. You are no longer subjected to the adage, “It is What it Is”---because Melissa will teach you, “It doesn’t have to be”. She served as the first President of The Professional Beauty Association and the first female president of The Salon Association comprised of national salon owners. She has spoken at educational and motivational seminars internationally in the Philippines, South Africa, Europe, Canada as well as the United States. She has twice served as judge on the Global Best Foundation Entrepreneurial Leadership Event sponsored by The Anderson School of Business at UCLA. She has served as keynote speaker for large corporations and Conferences and presented Feng Shui for Business leaders in the United States. Own Your Energy - with Melissa Yamaguchi!Melissa Yamaguchi, a dynamic Energy Therapist, Feng Shui speaker and educator, travels the world teaching lessons on balance of the individual through the practice of Feng Shui. You are no longer subjected to the adage, “It is What it Is” - because Melissa will teach you, “It doesn’t have to be”. She served as the first President of The Professional Beauty Association and the first female president of the Salon Association comprised of national salon owners. She has spoken at educational and motivational seminars internationally in the Philippines, South Africa, and Canada as well as the United States. She has twice served as judge on the Global Best Foundation Entrepreneurial Leadership Event sponsored by The Anderson School of Business at UCLA. My 2nd guest, Mrs. Yolanda McQueen of Younique Expressions shares how she got her start in a commissioned salon just 5 short years ago and how a good foundation has now prepared her for her new endeavor as an independent contractor with Sola Suites. The third guest is Mrs. Joy McLaughlin Harris and she shares how she made the shift from self-employed to business ownership with her new book making the shift. Finally, 4 resources that you can use right now to take your business to the next level. Education is the key to your success in this industry. The 1st Resource I want to share with you is Behindthechair.com which is by far one of my absolute favorites. If you are not already a member i encourage you to take a look. They have a few different ways that you can join. . For more information head over to probeauty.org. The third resource is not a beauty resource or organization but it is a resource that has helped me tremendously with leadership and public speaking. This organization is called Toastmasters. Toastmasters is a international organization that has helped people from diverse backgrounds become more confident speakers, communicators, and leaders. This is not a free resource, however the fee is minimal. You can head over to toastmasters.org for more information.
