They reminisce about the early days, when over pizza and beer they realized the massive opportunities that social media created for the industry, and how these thoughts became actions with the first app created for hairdressers and led to the Hairbrained community. They discuss what is working today, but more importantly dream of future opportunities and connections. “Show me the data; a person without data is just another person with an opinion.” - W. Edwards Deming In some areas of the hair and beauty sector, there is a lot of accurate data. But in other areas, there's a lot of opinion and perception. And while I can be as guilty of that as anyone, it's also important to separate fact from fiction.  My guest on today's podcast is Gordon Miller, who always has a good overview of what's happening in the hairdressing industry from a business perspective.   Gordon has held many different roles throughout his career, and today he is the Chief Engagement Officer of Hairbrained (hairbrained.me). Although our conversation today is based primarily on trends and data from the United States, most of it has relevance no matter where in the world you are based. In today's podcast, we will discuss: What the data says about how the industry is in a post covid world The current trends in evolving business models The changes happening to the professional retail model… And lots more!   In this Episode: [03:57] Gordon shares an overview of his career in the hairdressing industry.  [10:24] The problem of “fake beauty news.” [11:45] What the data tells us about the current state of the hairdressing industry (you may be pleasantly surprised by the answer!). [14:48] Examples of the various niches that exist within the salon industry, and the importance of acknowledging the differences between them.  [19:18] Staff turnover in the hairdressing industry, and how to deal with it better.   [23:41] Surprising findings from the Professional Beauty Association's fall 2021 report.  [26:15] Data around the shift from salon to suite models in the post-COVID era.   [31:36] How the mindset of employees in the salon industry differs from employees in other industries.  [33:43] The approximate percentage of salons that reopened after the pandemic.  [33:59] Gordon's thoughts on why the suite model has gained traction in recent years although it has been around for a long time.  [38:53] Trends that Gordon has noticed taking place in the blowdry bar and barber shop spaces.  [44:56] The future of the salon industry through Gordon's eyes. [52:00] The percentage of hairdressers who work less than 30 hours a week.  [59:06] Comparing how different population groups have responded to changes that have taken place in the retail space since the pandemic, and what this likely means for salon retail.    Thanks so much for joining me this week. In her latest book "Fuzz: When Nature Breaks the Law," Mary Roach approaches the topic of human-wildlife conflict with entertaining stories, scientific insight, and a healthy dose of wit and humor. There are plenty of animal stories in this episode, from marauding mountain lions to bothersome bears, from macaques who are jerks to gulls who are dicks, and of course that most meddlesome of all species – the human being. The phrase "going out clubbing" takes on a decidedly macabre meaning when the context is U.S. military attempts to control albatrosses living their lives near an air base. And find out if a scenario seemingly cribbed from an unaired "Breaking Bad" script portends the collapse of civilization. Hiding amidst all the stories and fun are big implications for ecosystems, biodiversity conservation, and human society. On this episode, I talk to Gerard Scarpaci, co-founder of Hairbrained.me. If you've yet to be part of or know of this community for passionate hairdressers and colourists, then I guarantee by the end of this episode you'll be hitting them up. Supporting each other in elevating our craft, you'll hear how belonging to this global community of craft hairdressers you can share your work and knowledge, while gaining inspiration and insights from your peers. Get in! Gerard is a veteran craft hairdresser who draws over 28 years of experience in the salon, in classrooms and on stages around the world. One of the industry’s most respected educators, Gerard co-founded Hairbrained.me, a global community of craft hairdressers and colourists with over 1,000,000 members, fans, and followers worldwide. As humans we are wired to be part of a group who all share similar values and passions. Today we will learn why the Hairbrained community is offering this sense of belonging, and how it's grown up to offer so much more than it's original platform of forums and sharing photos between it's early members. Since the communities launch in 2008, it has gone on to launch the Hairbrained.pro Shop, produced the now iconic “Hb Teach-In” master jam events, introduced the inspiring Hairbrained Video Awards, and created Hb LIVE Academy –– the start of a revolution in online craft hairdressing education. Whether you need a belonging to a community, or you're feeling isolated from other likeminded hairdressers, then today's conversation with Gerard will give you that push you need to surrounding yourself with other hairdressers and colourists from around the world. Everybody needs to be part of some community, so pick it wisely! Now lets get to it with Gerard!   Thanks for Listening To share your thoughts: Leave a note in the comment section below. So happy to bring you this episode with Gordon Miller. Gordon recently left his post as publisher of American salon magazine to become the CEO (chief engagement officer) at Hairbrained. He just launched his new podcast called "hairbrained conversations" which is a must listen. Gordon’s history is, in many ways, a recent history of our industry. He’s stood in a very unique place for decades, an unbiased position, a connector between all different factions of the industry. He’s a power networker. A contrarian. And a forward-looking thinker. We talk about his reasons for leaving American salon, how technology has disrupted the industry, and his latest view of social media. I also kept the behind the scenes of our recording so you can see how awkward I can be when doing these podcasts. Enjoy.
