The Mind of an Athlete. Show Up and Do the Grunt Work.  Here we are in February. How are those New Year's Resolutions going for you? Fortune.com tells us that by the second Friday of January, most people have already missed the mark on their resolutions. It even has a name – “Quitter's Day.” Dr. Darian Parker, the 2023 IDEA Personal Trainer of the Year Recipient, is a multihyphenate entrepreneur, athlete, and a man of faith. And he is breaking open myths. On what it takes to be a Division-1 Student Athlete competing at elite levels (he was a sprinter at James Madison University). On the interior work he has to do to be a good father (as he says, “I'm always working on the inner me, so that I can help develop a better inner person for another person.”). On the reality that life is lived at its best and realest without guarantees or known outcomes but is founded on authentic love for our fellow human beings (as a professed man of faith, he is looking to love people authentically). And a question that I have pondered often – do we have to love our jobs, or is something different going on in respect to what we do versus who we are in our souls? Through his work with clients over the last two decades, Darian has learned that all we can rely on is our ability to build true relationships with one another and to make a commitment to show up every day even when the outcomes are unknown or don't go our way. In his work as a personal trainer, he won't promise his clients that they will get that long sought after six-pack or hit that number they are looking for on the scale. Oftentimes, those type of results are based on circumstances that only the client can control – the quality of their sleep, what they are actually eating, how are their personal relationships impacting their lives? Darian will guarantee that he will show up every day and be ready to face the challenge of working out alongside them. The bigger factor in the equation is will they show up for themselves. In a time when so many seek quick results and instant fame, IG likes and the social media viral moments, Darian believes that one's life doesn't bloom under the bright lights of fame, accolades, or ego. Instead, it is a nuanced dance performed in the powerful spaces of the admission “I don't know.” It is facing, even removing what he calls the Friction Points in our lives. For Dr. Parker, the real champions show up daily and do the monotonous grunt work that is a major and essential part of what we call living. At the Podium WebsiteAt the Podium on IGPatrick on IGFor more information contact Patrick at patrick@patrickhueyleadership.com

"Quitter's Day." No, it's not the day that a person quits their job. It's the second Friday in January, designated as the day when most people are likely to give up on their New Year's resolution (unofficially, of course). Change, no matter how big or small can be difficult because our brains are wired to seek established patterns of consistency. I'm sure you can easily recall that feeling of discomfort when you've tried doing something new in the past. Maybe you wanted to get better at delegating work and you leaned into it. But seconds later you felt like you made a mistake and should take that task right back. This feeling of discomfort is normal but when left unmanaged can result in a pattern of backsliding into old comfortable ways. However, there are ways to create a positive feedback loop that fuels continued growth and self-improvement. We didn't know this, but the second Friday in January is known as “Quitter's Day”. This is the day that statistically, most people abandon their New Year's Resolutions. Are you a resolution person? Or a Goal guy? Or someone who loves a good old intentional process? And why can't we have all three? On the first episode of our brand-new, subscriber-only AidStation podcast (but free for January), Eugene and Matt sit down to discuss if they are on the resolution bus or not, what goals and processes they have in place for the year, and if, just, maybe, talking about something you are about to do on a podcast makes your more or less likely to achieve that thing. We also tackle the tricky question of what to do when your coaches (Kerry Suter and Ali Pottinger) fight publicly over your training in front of you. Habits 2 Goals: The Habit Factor® Podcast with Martin Grunburg | Goal Achievement, Productivity & Success – Simplified

This Habits 2 Goals episode is FREE for ALL subscribers.“Discipline is doing what you ought to do, when you ought to do it, whether you feel like it or not.” ~ Jim RohnBridging the Gap between Desire and DoingNew Year, new you. Right? Did you promise to get in shape for 2024 only to feel the comfy couch pulling you into its fluffy abyss? Incredibly, the second Friday of January is known as “Quitter's Day,” according to several online publications, such as Fortune. That's when people quit – they abandon their New Year's resolutions.Just two weeks into the New Year!?A Bible proverb says, “The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”What does that mean?In short, it means goals, aspirations, and desires are easy to conjure up; however, to realize your goals, dreams, and desires requires work; work that most people are unlikely to do.For better or worse, humans are naturally wired to avoid pain and seek pleasure. Thus, “weak” flesh is simply your body seeking comfort instead of effort.Your spirit says, “I will complete the half marathon!” However, until you bridge the gap between what you say you're going to do – your desires and your actions, you'll be left frustrated and unfulfilled, wondering what went wrong.Arguably, the entire personal development industry wants to crack the discipline code. See below. Is your discipline triangle closed or open?An open discipline triangle leaks…potential.Discipline develops as soon as you practice intersecting your behaviors (the doing) with your ambitions (desires). The key to discipline is ensuring that desire and doing intersect, repeatedly. How?ENTER THE P.A.R.R. METHOD: PLAN. ACT. RECORD and REASSESS.P.A.R.R. is the key to strengthening the discipline habit.By tracking any habit following P.A.R.R. you strengthen discipline. The P.A.R.R. method forces the practice of intersecting DOING with their DESIRE.«SEE the FREE HABITS-to-GOALS Tracking Template»Thus, by following P.A.R.R. you practice the art of discipline by continually intersecting your DOING with your DESIRE.While the flesh may be weak, it becomes stronger by following P.A.R.R.Enjoy the show!~mgP.S.: From the world of statistics: All models are flawed, but some are useful. With this in mind, we asked Google's AI experiment Bard to “break” the “Three Circles of Behavior System” model (perhaps a future post). The short story (no pun intended) is he/she/IT could not. The best Bard offered: “What about people who aren't aware of their unconscious stories/thinking? It's a good question and a nice attempt. However, an unconscious story is still a story (represented within the model), and that is the point of the latest book, EVERYTHING is a F*cking STORY where the latest version of the model was revealed.BTW: YOU are also invited to try and “break” the “Three Circles of Behavior Echo-System” model. If you think you can, please email or leave comments here.*Note: ChatGPT's does not know the model yet, officially published in October of 2022. This year, we're not just celebrating the New Year, we're celebrating NOT quitting on Quitter's Day! In this episode of Playing in the Sandbox, I'm digging into Quitter's Day and how we can shift our perspective toward behavior changes that stick. On that note, we're going to talk about framing our yearly reviews to help our team members get excited about changing their mindsets so they can accomplish great things. Coming up with a “New Year's Resolution” isn't enough. We have to create a clear vision of the outcome we want to achieve over a longer timeline. Don't fall victim to the “new year” hype! Get excited about changing behaviors and mindset - that's an excitement that lasts. It's time for our yearly reviews. When we set clear expectations and KPIs, we can help our team members grow, strengthening our team. Most people think that meeting all their needs will help them feel “free,” but there is a lot of freedom in embracing your “wants.” Don't forget to look inward! When you're being held back, look into your past to help open up your future. Go to https://www.tammyjbond.com/podcast to change your mindset and behaviors so you don't become a quitter! The Brainy Business | Understanding the Psychology of Why People Buy | Behavioral Economics

2022 was a great year for me and The Brainy Business. And, being this is a “best of” episode…here are some of my “best” moments from the year. I traveled to Amsterdam to speak at the fantastic IIEX Europe conference (thank you Greenbook!) and launched my second book, What Your Employees Need and Can't Tell You, with an in-person event and book signing. I was honored to be a runner-up in three categories of the Habit Weekly Awards this year and was an honoree on Greenbooks Future List, as well as the ESOMAR Insights250 list. Amazing! I continued teaching and added a class in advanced concepts of behavioral economics to the certificate program, which I'm really proud of and students have really enjoyed. We started testing out a second episode per week. I also got to meet and connect with some amazing people – 46 of them came on the show as guests in 2022 – that meant reading really great books and papers and learning about what is going on in the field, which is one of my favorite aspects of the work I do. I'm so lucky and honored for this life and love every minute of it and am so excited for the books and episodes coming in 2023! BUT before we get fully moving forward into the future, we have to look back and celebrate the best of 2022. Show Notes: [00:45] 2022 was a great year for me and The Brainy Business. And, being this is a “best of” episode…here are some of my “best” moments and memories from the year. [03:33] I also got to meet and connect with some amazing people – 46 of them came on the show as guests in 2022. [06:36] Thank you all for listening, subscribing, sharing, connecting on social media, and reaching out to let me know your wins and the behavioral economics concepts you have applied in your own businesses. [07:44] In 2022, the show had more than a quarter of a million downloads from 170 countries. Thank you! [08:29] TOP DOWNLOADS BY COUNTRY - US, UK, Canada, Australia, which have remained in the top 4 pretty much since the podcast started. India is fifth, followed by Germany… and then we get into some new territory! South Africa has moved up to being 7th in the world in 2022.  We then have Spain in the number 8 spot followed by Mexico, and for the first time in the top 10 we have Taiwan! [10:08] TOP 10 STATES - Virginia, Massachusetts, Georgia, then Florida is 7, and Ohio holding out the # 6 spot again this year. Washington is in our number 5 spot with New York in number 4 and then Illinois with the third most downloads in 2022! Once again, we continue to have Texas at 2, and California still with the top most downloads of 2022. [12:37] With 249 episodes of content to choose from, we get our top 10 of the year, starting with episode 196 and my interview with Priscilla McKinney of Little Bird Marketing. [14:32] If you are interested in human behavior and having better content that really resonates with people, you are going to love this next one, episode 201 – Creating Content People Can't Help But Engage With, featuring Katelyn Bourgoin, is next on our list. [17:43] We are to number eight, which is episode 192 – AI, Blockchain, Machine Learning, with Manuj Aggarwal. The intersection of human behavior and technology – specifically with AI and Machine Learning, has been a big topic of conversation in the past couple of years. [18:51] That brings us to the 7th most downloaded episode of the year, 190 – The Voltage Effect with John List. [21:06] Next on our list, is 187 – Motivation and Incentives at Work, with Kurt Nelson. [22:28] If you have ever taken or considered creating an online course, you must listen to episode 193 – How to Make Online Courses People Enjoy, with Chris Rawlinson of 42Courses. [23:57] Now, moving on to the fourth most downloaded episode of the year, 197 – You Have More Influence Than You Think, with Vanessa Bohns. [25:22] Yale professor Zoe Chance was on in episode 189 sharing about her fantastic book, Influence Is Your Superpower and that episode is the third most downloaded of the year. [26:52] That brings us to the second most downloaded episode of 2022. Our only non-interview in the top 10! This was episode 198 – The Dunning Kruger Effect. [27:24] Essentially, the Dunning Kruger effect looks at the interesting relationship of confidence and competence, and how when we know very little about something (low competence) we have ridiculously high confidence but once we get a little more competence and we start to see all that we don't know…confidence tanks, and it is a slow build back up to build it back as we learn. [30:06] We've made it to the most downloaded episode of the year. Are you ready? It is…186 – Get It Done, with Ayelet Fishbach! [32:11] Considering this episode is coming out right around the time of “Quitter's Day” which is when most people will have given up their resolutions, it seems like a good time to refresh your motivation by listening to this great episode with Ayelet. [34:08] There is a link to all the books featured on the show this past year right here in the show notes. [36:26] I can't wait to see what 2023 has in store. Right now…I'm most excited about speaking at SXSW which is coming up in Austin in March. Thanks for listening. Don't forget to subscribe on Apple Podcasts or Android. AND, January 19th is called Quitter's Day according to Strava statistics for people who start a diet! Look. I want to help you stop doing diets that don't work, and start losing weight in a way you can do for the rest of your life. And the best way to lose weight the rest of your life is to do something so simple that you can do when… You've had a bad day and ordering pizza sounds better because you just want to relax and forget the day. Your friends want to go out to eat at the last minute. Or, Your mind keeps screaming that you'll never lose weight so you might as well just eat what you want. You see, I know why diets fail. Diet companies forget we're human and they don't address the real shit that gets in the way of our weightloss. Joey would like to take the dog into his own home so that the dog can visit his father regularly and still be cared for properly. His wife, Katie, thinks it's too much. They already have two dogs of their own and a very modest sized home. What would you do? (36:22) Mike has got a shot at $900!  All he has to do is beat Raven in pop culture trivia!  (43:55)

That's why now's the ideal time to start thinking about resolutions that are life giving in addition to life changing. Faith practices require commitment that's similar to showing up to the gym or cutting back on sugar or promising to call your mother once a week….but they're also different because as we do them we're connecting with God. We're becoming more attentive to the Holy Spirit. And we're being shaped like Jesus in ways which strengthen our love for God and others. My Business On Purpose

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 12, 2021 6:28

Get Rid of Resolutions... Lean into habits! Any idea what percentage of Resolutions are still intact after the month of January? Well, let's get into it.  Happy Friday everyone, Thomas with Business on Purpose here. Recent studies have shown that just under 30% of resolutions stick beyond the month of January! That's wild!  More than 2 out of every 3 New Years Resolutions are given up on by the end of January. I laughed when I read this, but there's even a day called “Quitter's Day” where Scientists expect you to fail on your resolutions...and it's January 19th! So, make it past the 19th and you can successfully say you beat quitter's day! I'm kidding, but the obvious question stands to be asked...how do you follow through? How do you make it? How do you implement change? Well, if you subscribe to our podcast, which you should, or if you've followed along on Facebook, which you need to be doing, you've heard us talk about Habits. Habits are what is left over after your resolutions have failed! So... STOP MAKING RESOLUTIONS!!! Start making habits. So how do we do that? How do we make sure to instill habits that will work for a long period of time instead of ones that are quickly over on “Quitter's Day?” Well, I'm going to give you a book to read, and 3 practical ways to begin implementing habits that last instead of resolutions that fade. First, a book to add to your list. It's called Atomic Habits by James Clear. It's powerful, practical and a quick read. We don't get any kickbacks from them, just want to help you on your way to accomplishing your Vision for 2021. Ok, so the first thing I want to do is touch on a pitfall that keeps people from creating habits and combat that with a practical strategy. The first Pitfall I see is people focusing on the finish line instead of the process. People spend all of this time thinking about the destination, the end result, the losing 20 lbs, the doubling your revenue. But you can't lose 20 lbs if you can't lose 2. You can't double your revenue if you can't grow sales this week.  It's why we focus so hard on the 12 Week Year! It's splitting your BIG goals into bite-sized chunks and doubling down on the process instead of the end result. Do you know what happens? You build daily habits for achieving those goals. You find ways to get it done today...instead of getting overwhelmed with getting it done for the year! Habits start with baby steps and it's so easy to get overwhelmed and defeated by focusing on the end goal that's so far away. Number two...have no skin in the game! This is why 90% of the machines are sitting there empty at Planet Fitness. There's not enough skin in the game. If you don't go work out, what's the big deal...it's only $10 a month! It doesn't sting, it doesn't propel you to go and make good on your investment. Now, don't go and throw money away! But there is something to taking a step that you FEEL. I spent years saying...I'll get in shape. But not until I spent my hard-earned money did I start going 4-5 days a week. But the cost forced me to make a habit! And that's what counts. So, what are the investments you need to make that will force you to develop a habit? That will sting until you do something about it? Is it investing in a new employee? Is it spending money on an estimating software that you know you need? Again, don't throw money away, but put enough skin in the game to force yourself to learn a new habit and get moving! Trust me, those motivating factors can get you going immediately. The last thing I see all too often is people trying to do it alone. It sounds like common sense, but having someone to push you and hold you accountable is paramount to establishing habits that last. Who have you shared your resolutions with? Who have you told your Vision/your dreams with? Is someone checking up on your progress weekly? That's why we speak about our 12 week plans every single week in our team meetings! It's accountability. There's nowhere to hide! But if I know I'm going to be asked about my goals...I start building habits to get there.  So who do you need to invite in? Who will help you on your journey? Encourage you when you're frustrated? Pick you up when you need it? Find that person or that group and do the same for them. We can't do it alone! We weren't designed to do it alone, but were created to do life in community. Don't believe the lie that you can do it alone. So get after it today...revisit those resolutions that you set for 2021 and figure out what habits you need to implement to reach them. Again, your habits are what's left after your resolutions fall by the wayside. So use those habits to push them all forward and accomplish your Vision for 2021. I promise you it will be worth it. January 19th is known as "Quitter's Day." Do you know why? It's because every year like clock-work, people start doing their year-in-review posts and making their new year's resolutions. But come January 19th, also like clock-work, 80% of them start to fizzle out. "I guess I forgot," or "I had too much stuff on my plate," or "I just got so damn busy." Shane Parrish, founder of Farnam Street probably said it best: "New goals won't give you new results.
