A sign over a mirror in a public school reads, "You are now looking at the most special person in the world." The message is part of a program designed to build self-esteem in children, and there is no questioning the fact that some kids suffer from a lack of self-esteem. At times parents disparage the achievements of their kids—like, "Why can't you do as well in school as your sister?" Or, "You're dumb," or "Get up, you lazy girl." Or, "You'll never amount to anything when you do that sort of thing."

Valpolicella Defined area near Lago de Garda in north central Italy Close to Verona --- In the Veneto Name thought to be a mix of Latin and ancient Greek, and translates to “valley of many cellars.” Grapes allowed: Corvina, Rondinella, Corvinone, and Molinara 4 Styles: Valpolicella, Ripasso, Amarone & Recioto Recioto, winemakers pick ripe grapes from vines and let them dry on mats or hanging from rafters throughout the month of January, then vinifying these shriveled grapes and stopping fermentation before all sugars convert to alcohol. These sweet dessert wines have good acidity and a toothsome mouthfeel. Beverage 1: (7 min) Tomassi Rafael Valpolicella Classico Superiore Corvina 60%, Rondinella 25% and Molinara 15% Intense nose reveals both floral and fruity tones, with ripe cherries From the Rafaèl site, the first vineyard to be bought by the Tommasi family Excellent with pasta dishes with rich sauces, roasts and white meats, or moderately aged cheeses. Try it also with spicy Oriental dishes and full-flavored fish soups. Beverage 2: (15:38 min) Tommasi Valpolicella Ripasso A deep, bright ruby red in color, it is rich and intensely spicy on the nose, with notes of cherry jam, tobacco and black pepper. On the palate it is full-bodied yet elegant, with gentle, silky tannins and a very long finish. Made by fermenting standard Valpolicella with a pomace of grape skins left over from Recioto and Amarone, Ripasso is double-processed, and its name means “re-pass.” These soft, supple, medium-bodied wines combine the sour cherry notes of standard Valpolicella and the soft, bitter, slightly raisined notes of Amarone and Recioto. Beverage 3: (26:30 min) Monte Del Fra Amarone Amarone, whose name translates to “great bitter,” is made by letting those dried grapes from Recioto fully ferment. Amarone is a full-bodied, slightly raisinated wine with a pleasantly bitter finish balanced by hints of dark berries and some cocoa notes. The process came about in the 1930s, as did Ripasso. The resting of the grapes lasts for 120 days, depending on the season, until the sugar concentration of the grapes has reached at least 28% – 30% Intense with fine tannins, fruity, spices aromas, vanilla, cloves, chocolate, and coffee. Aromas of leather, tobacco, prune, dried berries: a total umami experience. Medium acidity, with fine tannins and full body. The flavors remain true to the nose. Long finish. Drink now and has beautiful potential of aging for 20 + years. Beverage 4: (48 min) Peterson Vin Santo Made by FOP (Friend of the Podcast), Fred Peterson Made from muscat grapes that were fermenting to a very high ABV, blended with a 180 proof Pear Au de Vie made from pear trees on the estate.

This is a story of kids from a public school in NYC that caters to students with special needs. During the summer of 2019, some of the students from the school came over to the Peter Cooper Village(PCV) - Stuyvesant Town(ST) residential complex to help the staff with their duties of cleaning the premises, as part of their summer training. The hope was that the training would help the kids build independence and confidence in their own abilities. However the results stunned everyone involved - from the school educators to the management staff at PCV/ST. This is the second part of the interview with Richie, Nestor and Malcolm. For the first part of the interview head here. I also talk with the educators from the school - Allison Tearney and Taylor Curtin - who share their dreams and hopes for their students.

It's Mother's Day again and honestly Matt-Man and Jayman have had about enough of this stupid made-up holiday. So, it's time to do something a little different. Oh we're still gonna celebrate the day, but we're going to do it by reading special Mother's Day posts we see on social media. The good, the bad, the ugly, and hopefully, the hilarious. We'll also have the phone lines open for anyone who would like to call and share a sweet or possibly crazy mom story or two. As always our Canadian Bureau Chief Jamie Mapleleaf will be here along with the IWS Players to add some charm to the proceedings. We'll have our usual witty banter, good and bad music, booze tasting and other shenanigans. So, if you want to do something REALLY SPECIAL for mom this Mother's Day you will treat her to an uninterrupted espisode of IWS Radio and even let her call in @ 661l.244.9852!

Welcome to episode 180, it’s been a busy week for me, I nearly didn’t get time to put this episode together but I’m glad I managed to because I want to talk about the revolution that is happening before out very eyes. Stay tuned for more about that but first…… Clipper Race Update They won!! Interesting Stuff I Saw This Week LinkedIn Engineering Blog - Serving Top Comments in Professional Social Networks Interesting article, although a bit technical! Quote ‘we’ve built a scalable comment ranking system that uses machine learning (ML) to provide a personalized conversational experience to each member visiting the LinkedIn content ecosystem.’ Previously LinkedIn had a very basic way of ordering the comments in a thread; ‘The default mode for ranking comments on the feed was rank by recency: if you were the last person to post a comment on a popular thread, your comment would show up first. We had no understanding of the comment’s content, no notion of personalization, and no knowledge of the engagement that these comments were drawing.’ Comments are now assessed via machine learning where factors such as; Actual comment content Level of engagement (likes and further comments) Who posted the comment It would appear that you only see a comment from one of your connections on a thread that is already attracting plenty of engagement. This shows the importance of getting quick traction to any post…once you get early engagement then the algorithm will share subsequent comments to more of each commenters connections (interestingly they use the term connections and not followers). Comments, Likes and Shares are up by more than 60% in 2017 - wow! The machine-learned model below shows what affects what you see with regards to comments This tells us that to gain greater visibility on LinkedIn we need to think about; How many followers we have Connection strength How many profile views we get Poor performing posts can have a detrimental effect on the visibility of future comments and posts @mentions and #hashtags in comments can increase visibility Overall, whilst a bit ‘techie’ this is a valuable insight into how LinkedIn programme their algorithm. Adding LinkedIn’s Profile Card on Office 365 Offers a Simple Way to Build a Professional Relationship This seems pretty similar to the ‘Rapportive’ Gmail plugin and the Sales Navigator Gmail plugin although from the screenshots, it does appear to provide a little more information. With the amount of people who use Microsoft Office 365 this doers highlight just how important your LinkedIn profile is to you! The State of Groups Many groups have been left to fester by their owners as can be seen by these shocking numbers of ‘pending members’ in some of the groups I am in on LinkedIn. Not all groups are this bad and some are still well, run and valuable but the engagement on LinkedIn is now all in the stream and not in groups. Let’s Not Get Too Honest! Have you seen the trending #hashtag on LinkedIn #letsgethonest? LinkedIn have even feature it in this new feature as seen below; This involves posting something honest and vulnerable about yourself and nominating others to do the same. Here are some of the things people have been posting about Speech impediments Sick relatives Relatives passing away I’m homeless And the list goes on…. If you click on the image above you can read more. I’m typically enjoy genuine, authentic posts and I’ve always been a fan of showing vulnerability but this feels like a step too far for LinkedIn. Maybe I’m wrong but this feels too self-indulgent to me and I find myself wondering about people who feel the need to share such deep personal issues with the whole world in this way. As I’m about to explain in the next section, the engagement on LinkedIn is phenomenal these days and maybe this is part of what comes with that but at the end of the day, this is still a professional network and there are boundaries. Posting about feeling vulnerable in the workplace because you do not have degree is one thing but talking about more personal issues such as bereavement feels wrong to me. Maybe I’m wrong…..I’d love to know what you think. Drop me an email to mark@linkedinformed.com or even better why not leave me a voicemail Something Special is Happening That’s the fourth time in the last 2 weeks that an audience on one of my seminars have told me that they are astonished as to how much better LinkedIn is than they thought it was (based on previous experience). I’m sure something really special is happening to LinkedIn this year and I’m not the only one who thinks this As previously mentioned, engagement levels are exploding - a 60% increase is beyond amazing! Is this down to the new design? Partly, but it’s mainly down to a new, younger demographic who are leading the way in showing us how to engage more effectively. The algorithm behind the new design has played it’s part and the new, more user friendly design has helped to attract this new audience but whatever the reason, I really senses a step change in the way LinkedIn is being used. As someone that has been training LinkedIn best practice for nearly ten years, I can’t begin to tell you how happy that makes me. Finally……finally!! Greater engagement is certainty bring with it more success whether you are a job seekers, recruiter or looking to grow your business. The future is LinkedIn! I've listened to at least 2 episodes about Groups, but I have a question that you haven't discussed. I've found about 5 groups that are really directly related to the kind of folks I'm trying to get to know, but all of them are really like advertising boards. People don't try to engage anyone in the groups at all, and every once in a while people will have a conversation around a post. My question is - how can I, as a member of a group, help to move the group more toward conversations? When I post to them, I post with questions that I really would like to engage (mostly with no response), and I'm starting to comment more in the groups (but mostly with no responses from anyone). Is there a way that I, as a member, can up the engagement, or when the culture of the group is set to be an advert board, is there really nothing I can do? I really appreciate your podcast and appreciate any thoughts you might have on this subject. Answer; The reason why this happens is that the members of these groups are simply not turning up! They may be members but they have long since 'disengaged' from these groups. This reflects the serious problems that exist in groups - too much spam and irrelevant 'noise' has led to people ignoring groups. They are still members but they never check emails (or they have switched off notifications) and they don't bother checking into their groups. So the answer to your question is to not bother with groups, at least for now anyway. Groups will be re-launched (probably early next year) and I suspect they will become relevant again but for now there are better ways to engage with the sort of people you wish to get to know. Most of the conversations on LinkedIn have moved to the homepage stream, meaning that people are commenting and engaging with peoples posts rather than in groups. The good news is that these conversations are better and more prevalent than they ever were in groups. Here is what I would do in your situation; • Identify people you are interested in via search - people and posts search. • Follow these people • Clean up your own homepage by unfollowing those that don't interest you and hiding irrelevant posts • Engage with people via their posts • Post interesting and engaging posts 3-5 times a week and @mention relevant people (sparingly) to bring others into the conversation Communication strategy and techniques are something I cover on a regular basis on the podcast, in fact, the last episode (178) is a recording of a talk I gave on that very subject. There is a place for groups on LinkedIn and I'm sure we will see the re-emergence of community discussion forums next year, but for now, I would advise concentrating your efforts on post engagement.

Hey, I have a magazine on me. You can read it while we wait. M: OK. Hmm… looks like a kid's magazine… Hmm, yeah. [ Mumbling quickly to himself. ] Peter Piper picked a pick… hmmm. A peck of pickled peppers. Peter piper picked a peck of peckled… GAhhh! F: Michihiro… what are you doing? What are you muttering about? M: I don't understand what on Earth this magazine is talking about. First, it was talking about seashells, then a woodchuck, and now pickles! F: Oh, those are different sets of tongue twisters, Michihiro. M: Tongue twisters? What are those? F: I'm pretty sure most languages have them. It's a game to see if you can say or repeat a short funny phrase without messing it up. M: Oh, I DO know those! These ones are hard though. F: They're fun. Here, I'll read one for you. "How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?" M: Wow! That's amazing. Hey, do the seashell one! F: OK. "She sells seashells by the seashore." M: Hey, you're so good at this. I can't do any of them! F: You were just speaking too fast! Here, try reading this one SLOWLY. M: OK. "Peter piper picked a pick"... bleh! F: Try going slower, Michihiro! Here, I'll say it once for you. "Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers" M: OK. "Peter Piper picked a peck of peckled pippers" F: [ laughing ] I guess you just need to practice. M: I give up! Forget it! F: Oh, it's our turn to order? Oh, do you want any pickles or peppers on your food, Michihiro? M: NO! NO MORE PEPPERS AND NO MORE PICKLED THINGS! [ (229) In Love with a Girl ] [ Setting: Locker room chat after a friendly game of basketball ] M: Hey, Aya, good hustle out there! W: Hey, Bob, thanks! You too! But I don't think I played so well today. I need to work on my dribbling a little more. M: Well, I think your dribbling was just fine. But if you want to, we can go back to MY room and I can teach you about a few REALLY SPECIAL things! W: Bob! Why are you always making such comments! I hope you don't say things like that behind my back. It's so crude! M: Well, let's hope you're never on your back. Ha ha ha. Then I can be a real crude boy! W: Ah! That's gross! Seriously, Bob, you're going to get in some serious trouble some day with your words! Some people aren't as nice as I am! And get that smirk off your face. M: Oh, I'm just having a little honest fun. You should try it some day… W: Yeah. I know how to have fun. I just don't make vulgar remarks at people. M: But, I'm making more than just a remark. I want us to make something… some beautiful music together, baby. W: Oh, Bob, you're hopeless… M: Well, give me some hope then! You see, the thing is… Aya, I'm in love with you! The way you walk… the way you talk… it gets me going! And this king bee needs some of your sweet, sweet honey. W: [ Gasp! ] Oh…Bob…well, the way to a lady's heart is NOT through her pants, you know! But, I must say: now that I know your true intentions, I guess I could use a quick lesson… about basketball, that is! [ (249) Rap Music ] [ Situation: Jenna is walking down the hallway of her high school and runs into Jerald, the school's "wannabe rapper". ] W: Oh, hey Jerald! Long time no see! How've you been? M: I been great. Check it. My mixtape bouts to drop next week and you best believe it's fire. W: You're still into that whole rap-thing? I thought it was just a phase, like when you used to carry that stuffed giraffe to school everyday! M: Nah brrr, it ain't like that. I'm married to the rap game and there ain't nothin' you can do to get in the way of that. This ain't no phase like Jimmy the Giraffe was. W: Meh... If you say so! M: In three years you gonna be beggin' at my feet for my autograph. Imma be the next Eminem, jafeel? W: If you say so! [ Laughs to herself ] [ Mr. Fritz, an elderly teacher, approaches Jerald. ] M2: Hello Jerald! I just got finished listening to your mixtape and I must admit it was some, how you young people say these days, fire. It was so fire, I think I burned my ears listening to it. [ Giggles to himself in a self-satisfied manner ] M: Mr. F! I appreciate that! Yo brrr my newest mixtape's droppin' next week so be sure to check it out! W: What is the world coming to? [ (272) English Slang (1) ] W: Greg, I find English slang quite interesting, don't you? M: Well, actually, I never really think about it. I kind of just say things. W: Yeah. But by studying other languages, you realize how many meanings each word can have! Take, for example, the word "sick". Have you ever realized just how many meanings the word "sick" has? M: Two, right? The first meaning "being under the weather," such as "I feel sick." And the second meaning "cool", such as "Whoa, that's so sick!" W: You can't think of a third meaning? M: Well, I'm sure there is one, but no, I can't think of a third definition right now. W: Sick, meaning "gross." You know, you see a horrible bruise on someone's arm, and you say to them: "Ew, that's so sick." M: Oh yeah! You're right. Sick, sick, and sick. How could I have forgotten the third meaning? W: And it's kind of funny. The more you think about it, the more you realize how hard English slang can be. M: Can you give me another example? W: Well, for instance, most English slang words have a positive and negative connotation, regardless of their true meaning. Take, for instance, the word "bad." It normally means "not good." However, when we use "bad" as a slang term, it can mean "good" or "awesome!" M: Ah! You're right!

Happy Pill I actually have a few more installments of the "Deep in China" session and the NYD set to upload and yet ended up publishing this little nugget. Two factors: on the one hand felt like something a bit lighter & happier as I was starting to accumulate new 2014 tunes on my HD and on the other (my fellow podcasters will understand) once a set is recorded and sits there for a few weeks, it needs to be pretty good to actually be dug up for publishing.. most of the times they stay on the drive because we (hope) the next one will be better. Happy Pill.... A very vocal house set with happy tunes to bring a smile to our faces. I have lately been watching the news and I cannot say that the reports from the Ukraine, Syria and Venezuela are particularly cheerful.. Happy Pill time then.. Tunes from 2014 or late 2013 with some oldies mixed in-between. Playlist: 2013 Luv 4 You. Scott Diaz 2013 I Like 2 Party. Samir Maslo Vs. Oliver Cheatham 2013 Beautiful (Original mix). Hakan Kabil feat. Majuri 2013 Need You Tonight (Scott Wozniak Bootleg Remix). INXS 2013 Dreams (Director's Cut Classic Mix). Vintage Lounge Orchestra 2013 The Otherside (Original Mix). Carl Hanaghan feat. Roz Brown 2014 The Madness of Last Night Serenity (Original Mix) [Xtian Mash-Up] Lars Behrenroth feat. Marc Evans 2014 If We Only Had Tonight (Original Mix vs Carl Hanaghan Discopolis Remix). Husky 2013 Tonight (Earnshaw's Deep & Modified Mix). Mike Scott, and Richard Earnshaw, feat. Chappell 2013 Boy Is Mine (OtherSoul Classic Mix).Brandy & Monica 2013 Everybody Loves (Monte Remix.) Phil & Dan 2001 Loving You (Vincenzo's Remix). Smurf & Perry feat. Concha Buika 2014 Something About the Rain [Xtian Lil’ Edit]. Noa feat Adele 2012 Settle Down (Scott Wozniak Remix). Kimbra Highlights: First track “Luv 4 You” from the king of Jackin’ House Scott Diaz.. Tune sets the mood.. If you do not like it, do not progress, your sad mood might lighten up, do not risk it.. Impeccable production. “I Like 2 Party” from Samir Maslo and Oliver Cheathman.. It has that Disco atmosphere which comes from the rich production, the echoed vocal sample and is written in a key F#m which I think is perfect for House Music... Just lovely. “Beautiful” from Hakan Kabil, multi-layered tune which might confront some, though I think it ticks all the right boxes and Majuri is a great vocalist.. Not a simple track at all.. “Need You Tonight”. With the biopic of INXS being currently shown on Australian TV, I thought it would be fun to use this immense remix from Scott Wozniak. It shows his immense talent as a remix/producer. The man can touch anything and enrich it.. Scott just crowd-sourced his first artist album, I simply cannot wait! Another new take of an old classic, “Dreams” from Fleetwood Mac by no other than Frankie Knuckles and Eric Kupper.. I have always, will always love FK’s production. Rich, wide, smooth I am running out of adjectives.. And if you want to feel the FK’s touch just scroll to 20:39:00 and bang one second after that bass you hear coming, this IS FK signature right there.. I heard it too many times live not to recognize it, it just pumps precisely when the tune needs it.. Without it the track would be perfect but lacking soul, lacking a heart beat.. The Bass line is the pulse. Enjoy! "The OtherSide".. well it is a bridge track. I needed to change key and keep the wide production theme going, set being recorded live .. key and beat matched, it was enough for me.. Well… you got a House Diva. First time I notice Roz Brown as a vocalist.. She can sing! My mash-up of Lars Behrenroth’s ( of Deeper Shades of House fame) “Madness Last Night”.. Many reasons to be happy there.. Lars is one of the reason I do this because I remember listening to his sets 10 years ago and thinking I should try to do this.. Not that I am in any way comparing my crap with his immense talent but he is one of my inspirations.. Furthermore nothing makes me more happy than to buy tunes from people I respect and have connected with through Facebook and the likes. Finally I am actually pretty “stoked” to use the term being thrown around by all the Australian Olympians with what I did.. Great track from Lars and half decent mash-up from Xtian.. “If We Only Had Tonight” from Husky… immense Australian talent ( why does he NEVER come to Melbourne??).. Epitome of the happy tune and you are getting double dose because I ripped twice the Discopolis Remix in Traktor and saved it in extremis by the skin of my teeth with the OM.. Set is live.. would be have been in the bin.. I love everything, the production, the build in the synth, the filters, Carl Hanaghan doing a dirty sick job on the remix.. Have fun and smile.. “Tonight” Earnshaw and Mike Scott.. need I say more… oh yes.. Chappell , yes indeed there is “something special tonight”.. Not sure it counts as a happy songs per se.. but it made ME happy dropping it.. Rich production again and if you want to hear what I mean by the Frankie K’s bass pulse scroll to 48.59 and wait for the bass heartbeat coming a second after… Earnshaw showing he can do it just as well.. Another sugar Happy Pill with “Boy is Mine” from OtherSoul ( please hit the Like button on their Facebook page very talented producers and remixers).. Tunes has a house and R'n'B feel. Pure love and I dare you to listen and not have a wie grin on your face.. Ought to be prescribed to sad people and reimbursed! “Everybody Loves”. From Phil & Dan.. another bridge tune thrown in because I could not find the beat of what I had originally planned to drop and I was running out of bars.. Not quite sure it fits the theme but it worked and I love the cow bells sounding percussions and yes My House is Your House and Your House is Mine works ALL THE TIME.. J Now let’s go to something REALLY SPECIAL… way back from 2001 “Loving You” from Smurf and Perry the Vincenzo's Remix!!! DO NOT MISS!!! If ,like me, you are discovering this track, you are in for a treat.. When I first heard it on GN’s Housecall in the "Do You remember House" section, I just could not believe that A) I had never heard such a great track B) that it had been produced in 2001!! Pure bliss of a tune, perfect production and take it from someone who does not like jazz most of the time, it has the most perfect blend of jazzy undertones.. Bass is driving the track from alpha to omega, intricate percussions, great vocals from Concha Buika.. and then there is the classical piano progression at the start and end of the track.. Just telling you that this is A VERY VERY RARE HOUSE GEM.. It goes straight to my top ten.. and knocked a MAW track I never thought could be knocked off.. Additional info to the track.. I searched everywhere on the LEGAL net for the track, Traxsource, Beatport, Juno, Discodogs..etc.. to no avail, no file, no vinyl.. nothing.. I ended up hitting Shane D (host of the show and legendary remixer/producer/DJ from Durban SA) to ask if he could help me to find the tune.. He just sent the vinyl output by return.. Many thanks and much respect.. I had done something for him a few years back without expecting anything. Karma.. they say.. Thank you Shane D. “ Settle Down” another Scott Wozniak Remix, I needed a short happy tune to stay in the CD format and not to encroach into the “More Happy Pills" set soon to follow.. and this little happy gems was just meant for it.. Hope you like the set A bientôt.. with More Happy Pills Xtian
