As an extension of the Grape Mini-series, we come up with lists of wines that lovers of a specific grape can try as alternatives. Grenache/Garnacha comes in many different forms -- as a juicy, cherry-berry standalone grape in Spain, as lighter blender in the Rhône and Rioja, in rosé and fortified wines, and as full, serious wine in places like Priorat (Spain), Châteauneuf-du-Pape (France), and Australia, where old vines make very intense wines. In part one of this two-part episode, the Thieves will go behind the scenes in Chianti Classico to discover the thought process and philosophy behind the UGAs and some techniques used to create the Atlas and the detailed maps therein. In this and the following episode, we'll be taking a deep dive into the recently approved “added geographic units” of the Chianti Classico region in Tuscany, Italy, which were officially signed into law this past July 2023.Known in Italian as Unità Geografiche Aggiuntivi, or simply “UGAs” to English-speaking insiders, these geographic units divide the rather large Chianti Classico denomination into 11 smaller sub-areas that sometimes, but not always, follow historical communal boundaries, and broadly group these sangiovese-based wines together into more coherent style categories. This is especially relevant given the significant variability of physical and human factors that shape and mould Chianti Classico into so many delicious expressions.Joining the discussion are Caterina Mori, director of Communication for the Consorzio Vino Chianti Classico , along with another important guest who will be familiar to Wine Thieves listeners, Alessandro Masnaghetti, aka Map Man Masnaghetti. Alessandro joined us for one of our three episodes devoted to the wines of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano also in Tuscany (see episode 22 from season 1). Masnaghetti is the director and editor of Enogea, an independent Italian wine newsletter founded in 1997 that continues the work of the late great Luigi Veronelli, a legendary Italian wine writer who launched the first independent Italian wine newsletter known as Ex Vinis back in the 1970s with the aim of recognizing the deserving work of smaller Italian wineries, Alessandro worked with Veronelli, and brought map-making skills to the table to add another dimension to the modern Italian wine narrative. Fast forward to 2023, and Masnaghetti has created dozens of detailed maps of wine regions, mostly around Italy but also a few outside, including Barolo, Barbaresco, Valpolicella and Amarone, Vino Nobile, and even Bordeaux. But his latest magnum opus, and the one most relevant to our two episodes, is the incredibly detailed Atlas of Chianti Classico. This atlas and its series of detailed maps and background geological information, or as Masnaghetti himself puts it, “geo-viticultural” information – that is the aspects of geology most relevant to grapegrowing, was commissioned by the Chianti Classico Consorzio, with the main aim of establishing the boundaries for the 11 new UGAs. Masnaghetti's work is an impressive tome that should be on every wine lover's shelf, and indeed should be in your hands right now to follow along on these two episodes. You can get yourself a copy at enogea.it. The maps contained within the atlas show geology, topography, vineyard boundaries, estates, and much much more. In the previous episode we spoke with Giovanni Manetti, current president of the Chianti Classico Consorzio and owner of the Fontodi estate in Panzano. Signore Manetti shared loads of valuable information with us on the history and the current status of Chianti Classico, and we touched upon the introduction of these UGAs and what it means to both producers and wine drinkers around the world. Dennis Hill, co-founder of Langhart and Hill wines, joins Steve Jaxon on California Wine Country. Larry Van Aalst is in for Dan Berger, who is travelling this weekend. Larry has had a long career in wine, he was an educator and a Sommelier and worked in the university and junior college and with PBS, all related to wine. He even worked in the prune harvest back when that was the dominant fruit in Sonoma County. This 2023 vintage is Dennis' 51st as a professional winemaker. His first job in winemaking was working for the late Ed Seghesio. He grew up on his family's property just south of Healdsburg, on the border between Dry Creek Valley and Russian River Valley AVAs. It was a prune and apple farm but in the 1970s they replaced most of the prunes and apples with wine grapes. Rosés made of Bordeaux Grapes are Great They are tasting a Rosé made of Merlot, which Larry really likes. Dennis calls is “racy” and it has a deeper color than most Rosés these days. He wanted his to have a little more depth of flavor, so he leaves it on the skins and uses Merlot.  Rosé is not just seasonal anymore, They are also tasting a Chardonnay is about the flavors of the fruit, not the oak. It's all older and neutral wood. It is complex and without any of that annoying buttery oaky flavors. Click the logo to visit our sponsor Bottle Barn online for the coolest bargains on wine, beer and spirits. These wines are available at Bottle Barn. They don't have a tasting room and are just building their sales in the marketplace. They only make about 350-400 cases per year, mostly to restaurants and selected local retail, including Bottle Barn. Click the logo to visit our sponsor Rodney Strong for the latest on the winery and event calendar. They also make another line of wines called Rumplestiltskin, which is dedicated to unusual varieties not usually encountered. They make an orange wine and an Appassimento, and a Croatian variety called Dobricic. The Appassimento is very interesting. It is a northern Italian style where they dry the grapes before pressing them, which makes a unique flavor. Amarone is the name of one kind of wine made this way.

In 1930 their grandfather founded the Biscardo winery in the Bardolino area, close to Verona in Veneto region. At twenty, their father Augusto began to sell the typical wines of the Verona area like Amarone, Valpolicella, Bardolino, and Soave, first of all in Italy and then in Germany. At that time the German market became more and more important so he spent more time abroad. In Germany at the same time three other wines had success: the Chianti, Lambrusco and Montepulciano. So, the Biscardo Winery decided to buy Montepulciano as BULK WINE, bottled and sold them. When their grandfather, the founder of the Winery, passed away, their father decided to leave the Biscardo Winery to his brother and cousin and build his own distribution company for Germany. Marco and Sabrina after they graduated, began to work with their father on the distribution of wines from 14 Italian wineries: from different regions from north to south of Italy. They began to travel in Italy learning the production areas, the philosophies of the individual wineries and the quality of the wines, but at the same time, they travelled a lot to Germany and other countries for the export of the wines of these wineries. In 2002 Sabrina; Marco and their father made a big investment and bought the Fosso Corno estate in Abruzzo. Three years later, their father Augusto passed away without seeing the first harvest, but Sabrina and Marco decided to continue their vision and mission which is the production of a particular, quality Montepulciano wines. Welcome to Episode 1334 in which Marc Millon interviews Sandro Boscaini, Chairman/Co-Managing Director, Masi Agricola Spa More about Masi Agricola: Representing the sixth generation of family ownership and management, Sandro Boscaini heads Masi Agricola today, one of the most important vignerons and winemakers in Valpolicella. The historic Masi headquarters are in the center of Valpolicella, a lovely hilly area between Lake Garda and Verona. Differentiating the winery from others is the Boscaini family's careful selection of specific vineyard sites, their use of indigenous grape varietals, and their respect for historic winemaking techniques from the region, which are constantly updated by Masi Technical Group. Coordinated by Raffaele Boscaini, Masi Technical Group is made up of experts from different disciplines — including agronomists, oenologists, and experts in quality control, marketing, and sales – and works with national and international institutions and universities. Some of its most important projects include innovations in the appassimento technique, which has been used to create a modern style of Amarone and has achieved international success. Appassimento is the traditional method used in the Veneto region to concentrate aromas and flavors in wine. Before vinification, grapes are laid out on bamboo racks in drying lofts over the winter, an ancient technique used for centuries in the region. Passed down through generations in the Boscaini family, this craft has been modified innovatively by the Masi Technical Group and is used today to make fresh and lively wines from dried grapes, notably Amarone. The APPAXXIMENTO® symbol signifies Masi's expertise in appassimento in the 21st century and guarantees the authenticity and quality of Masi wines. In this show, we cover Aglianico - the best red grape you may have never heard of. Widely considered one of Italy's top three red grapes with Sangiovese and Nebbiolo, many consider the wines of Aglianico some of the world's top bottles too. That said, because Aglianico is a grape of the more obscure regions in southern Italy (Campania and Basilicata, mainly), the wine hasn't gotten its due. It is much less expensive than top Barolos and Barbarescos or Chiantis and Brunellos – although it is slowly catching up. It is a grape well-suited to warm Mediterranean climates, and for the changing climates of once cooler growing areas like regions of California and Australia. Aglianico is historic, yet modern and there has never been a better time to get acquainted with the wines of this beautiful grape. Photo: Aglianico Source: Taub Family Selections, Mastroberardino Page   Here are the show notes: We cover the history of the grape and discuss possible origins. Aglianico is considered to be one of Italy's oldest grapes and it was always thought to be an import from the Greeks who colonized Campania and other parts of southern Italy. Today, Attilio Scienza, the foremost Italian grape scientist, has changed that theory. He believes the grape is native to southern Italy and the name is related to the Spanish word for plains “llano” (ll=gli, both sounds like y sound in canyon). The grape may have been domesticated from grapes growing on the plains We discuss how the grape was nearly extinct after phylloxera, and how Antonio Mastroberardino - preserved and propagated Aglianico to make one of the best red wines in Italian history – the 1968 Mastroberardino Taurasi Riserva. The D'Angelo family revived Aglianico around Monte Vulture in Basilicata around the same time. The success of these two families on the world stage, encouraged others to start making wines from Aglianico, and today there are many great examples of wines from the grape Photo: 1968 Mastroberardino Taurasi Riserva, widely considered one of Italy's best wines   Aglianico Viticulture: Aglianico produces medium to small, compact bunches. The individual berries are small, round, and dark blue-black with quite thick skins. The grape requires a long, warm growing season with a warm fall to fully develop flavors and calm tannins and acidity. It is early budding and late ripening. Overly cool or overly hot conditions don't do good things for the grape. Aglianico is one of the latest harvests in Italy, with Vulture often starting harvest in mid to late November According to Ian d'Agata, the top English-speaking writer on Italian wine, Aglianico has three biotypes (variations of the same grape, but not different enough to be clones): Taurasi, with small berries, less vigorous, and sensitivity to spring weather that may reduce the harvest Taburno (also called Aglianico Amaro -- but not because it's amaro /bitter, rather because it's higher in acidity) is less fertile with big bunches. It is earlier ripening, with higher alcohol and higher acidity del Vulture is most intensely flavored biotype, with strong fruit aromas and flavors, and it seems to have fewer viticultural issues The grape also has clones, the most popular of which are used to create bolder, darker wines     Terroir Aglianico prefers volcanic soils. The Campania DOCGs are on extinct volcanoes or have influence from nearby Vesuvius. The volcanic activity makes these soils rich in nutrients, well-drained, and very complex. The grape loves elevation and it thrives in spots where other grapes can't ripen. Although Aglianico needs dry climates with abundant sun, it must have diurnal temperature swings at night so it can retain its acidity and build flavor slowly   Photo: Mastroberardino's Aglianico vineyards  Source: Taub Family Selections, Mastroberardino Page Styles: Generally, Aglianico has the following characteristics: Very high acidity and tannin. Floral (red roses), red fruit (sour cherries), plum (esp. from Vulture), leather and herbs (esp. from Taburno), smoke, and mineral notes. The wines are always savory. It is capable of long aging. Regardless of where the grape grows, these characteristics seem to be present. Some styles are lighter and more floral with higher acidity, while others are deep, earthy, fuller, and complex with tobacco, licorice, iron ore, and coffee notes. Aglianico needs age. It can be tough in its youth, with harsh tannin and acidity, since the grape has naturally high tartaric acid   Other styles: IGT wines – blended with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot or other native grapes Passito: Similar to Amarone from Veneto, these wines are made from partially dehydrated grapes. This style is very rare Sparkling: Made in the IGP classification. These wines often display red cherry, strawberries, and spice flavors and aromas     Regions The grape is almost exclusively in southern Italy, mostly in Campania in the provinces of Avellino, Benevento, Sannio, and Caserta. In Basilicata, wines are mainly made around Potenza and Matera. All these areas are in cool, dry, sunny spots in the mountains The three main areas for high quality Aglianico in Italy are:   Taurasi (1993 DOCG), which is near Avellino, is mountainous and therefore at altitude, has volcanic soils and has an ideal climate -- hot, sunny days, and cool nights to slow ripening and build flavor. Up to 15% other red grapes are permitted in the blend to soften Aglianico (often Piedirosso, the native aromatic grape, which is lighter than Aglianico, is used) Flavor profile: Black cherry, raspberry, cigar, coffee, earth, leather. High acidity, high tannin, high alcohol, medium bodied. Riserva: has higher alcohol levels is aged longer Producers: Mastroberardino, Feudi di San Gregorio, Ponte, Terre degli Svevi, Re Manfredi, Quintodecimo, Donnachiara, Antionio Caggiano, Salvatore Molettieri, Perillo, Luigi Tecce, Terrdora, Urciolo The wine we were drinking during the show, 2013 Feudi di San Gregorio Taurasi. Here is a link to the show I did with owner Antonio Capaldo, ep 337   Aglianico del Taburno (2011 DOCG) is near Benevento. These wines are less famed than Taurasi because the region was used for bulk wine until the 1980s. The region consists of 14 towns on the eastern side of the Taburno mountain. Rather than pure volcanic or a volcanic mix, soils are clay -limestone. Taburno has bigger diurnals than Taurasi, and is generally cooler than Taurasi leading to higher acidity. Flavor profile: Pepper, black fruit, figs, leather, and herbs. High acidity, high tannin, high alcohol, medium body Producers: Cantina del Taburno, Cantine Tora, La Rivolta   Other Campania DOCS include: Cilento, Sannio, Gallucio, Irpinia, Falerno del Massico     Aglianico Del Vulture (we did a whole podcast on this) is located in Basilicata, just around the province of Potenza in the north. The wine region borders Campania and Puglia. The wine is required to be 100% Aglianico. Aglianico del Vulture DOC and Aglianico del Vulture Superiore DOCGs are on volcanic, mineral rich, well-drained soils around the extinct volcano. The elevation of Monte Vulture and the rain shadow it creates make perfect conditions for Aglianico – it gets its long, cool growing season, where it can develop flavors and aromas over time Flavor profile: black plum, coffee, dried herbs, smoke, dark chocolate. These wines have lower acidity than the wines of Campania. They still have high tannin, and high alcohol Producers: Cantine del Notaio, Elena Fucci, Pasternoster, Macarico, Basilisco, Cantina di Venosa, Bisceglia, D'Angelo Aglianico can also be found in: Abruzzo & Molise, where it is blended with Montepulciano Lazio, Calabria, Puglia, where it is sometimes blended with Primitivo     New World Regions Australia: Adelaide Hills, Barossa, Langhorne Creek, Mudgee, McLaren Vale, Riverina, Northern Tasmania– cool and warmer regions! The wines are apparently less acidic and tannic, and quite high quality     USA: California: Many regions grow the grape but Caparone in Paso Robles was the first in 1992. It shows promise as the climate warms. Other US: Texas, New Mexico   Argentina and Mexico are also having some success   We end with a discussion of food pairings and encouragement to go out and try this gem!   Main resource: "Native Wine Grapes of Italy" by Ian D'Agata   _______________________________________________________________ Thanks to our sponsors this week: Wine Spies uncovers incredible wines at unreal prices - on every type of wine in a variety of price points. Welcome to episode 1183, another installment of 'On The Road Edition', hosted by Stevie Kim. Today Stevie sits down with Michele Tessari of the Ca' Rugate Winery in Verona. And remember, this episode is in the ITALIAN language, however, if you would like to experience it English, please click the link and visit our Mamma Jumbo Shrimp channel on YouTube where we have added subtitles to this interview! https://youtu.be/um-pVdya1is More about todays show: Ca' Rugate is in the heart of 3 DOC, Lessini Durello, Valpolicella and Soave. In the cellar of Ca' Rugate you will find their flagship wines, Monte Alto Soave Classico, Amarone and the unique Studio wine. Ca' Rugate is a winery with more than 100 years of history linked to the Tessari family for four generations and the Rugate hill near the centre of Bronoligo. Already at the beginning of the 20th century, Amedeo Tessari started producing his own wine, thus beginning the history of Ca' Rugate. His son Fulvio and his grandson Amedeo produced the first bottles under the Ca' Rugate brand name. In 2001 the fourth generation joined the company and a process of renewal began. Today Ca' Rugate is a company rooted in the territory but with an international outlook, with 90 hectares of its own vineyards and a production that knows how to respect tradition and embrace innovation.
