2017 Dec Rebooting from the Deep End (Pt. 1 Taste this Love)   “The news of my passing was greatly exaggerated”. Borrowing from Oscar Wilde or (Mark Twain who knows?)   House is a Journey 2.0! Reboot..   Had to focus on more important issues for a while. Though I did play live and mixed at parties, I could not be bothered with tweaking and publishing. I have a few live raw sets on my drive, which will eventually be uploaded. I even have an uploaded yet unpublished set from April 2017, cannot remember why I failed to publish... I Play for Paris Pt.1 Eclectic Lounge with a few unexpected finds and some very tongue-in-cheek pop mashups..   One month ago some nihilistic losers butchered 130 women and men in Paris… Forget about the social media meltdown, France is my country and Paris my city. Whereas France is actually far from being the model country it aspires to be, by attacking “her” for being the “capital of prostitution and obscenity”, those bastards just proved that somehow those symbols of secularism and freedom are still alive and worth celebrating. Forward to a few days ago… I was unable to mix anything, which wasn’t dark and filled with anger for a month until we decided to have an impromptu party. The core nexus of friends who could make it facing Xtian who was wondering what would spark his muse and how he could get out of his negative loop and make himself and his friends happy. I played a 4 hour set, took about 20 minutes to get into it but once I found the right format for this forum it flowed. Got out of my spleen and played fun eclectic jams, old and new edits of tunes everyone knew but cuts they had not heard before. Whereas my usual format is to play current paid releases in whatever genre takes my fancy, I went into a “Richard Vasquez/Doctor Love” mode and played for me and for my friends. Lots of repeats but somehow that’s how we felt! We wanted to feel good and were oh-so very ready to try our best.   Four hours later, they were asking for more and pushing me to go harder and louder. Spring is Coming Ep.2   Very ambivalent as to whether this episode ought to have been uploaded at all..   Continuing in the spirit of the previous episode as I endeavour to slowly get into the soulful, sunnier vibe of the Australian springtime.   Nothing really special but handpicked tunes, some of which I possibly dropped  too recently but felt like giving them a second chance.. This set is certainly not required listening. Beyond being a real annoyance as I hate adding genreS in my elaborate sorting algorithm, Nu Disco is the 21st century take on the late 70’s, 80’s Italo House disco sound. Deep Sessions VII (126 bpm Deep n’ Dance)  The seven episodes of Deep Sessions should really be called Fifty Shades of Deep. It would have been a better title and a true depsiction of what those sessions are about. Yet I did not want to make an event of 7 concomitant uploads and felt like being a bit clinical. I want to keep the blurb to a minimum and let the deepnest talk Embarking in a avalanche of Deep House uploads. I buy a lot of Deep House tunes, yet upload very few true Deep House sets. Though I believe Deep House is where I find the most consistent Talent and great quality tunes, being a slut for vocals and pretty tunes, I tend to shy away from publishing any Deep House mixes. Willingly or not, I always fall into the trap of including soulful tracks when I try to go deep. Let’s hope that by the time I am done with Deep House Sessions, I will have published something which is true to the genre. More Happy Pills....Follow up of previous Happy Pill. Proviso: Been sitting on this Intro for a while, thought it fitted the Happy Pill Theme.. By no means am I NOT taking mental health as a serious issue. It simply is! Directly or indirectly, we all have had some experience of how tragic, debilitating or simply sad, mental health issues are. Happy Pill   I actually have a few more installments of the "Deep in China" session and the NYD set to upload and yet ended up publishing this little nugget. Two factors: on the one hand felt like something a bit lighter & happier as I was starting to accumulate new 2014 tunes on my HD and on the other (my fellow podcasters will understand) once a set is recorded and sits there for a few weeks, it needs to be pretty good to actually be dug up for publishing.. most of the times they stay on the drive because we (hope) the next one will be better.   Happy Pill.... Just lovely.   “Beautiful” from Hakan Kabil, multi-layered tune which might confront some, though I think it ticks all the right boxes and Majuri is a great vocalist.. Not a simple track at all..    “Need You Tonight”. With the biopic of INXS being currently shown on Australian TV, I thought it would be fun to use this immense remix from Scott Wozniak. It shows his immense talent as a remix/producer. The man can touch anything and enrich it.. Scott just crowd-sourced his first artist album, I simply cannot wait!   Another new take of an old classic, “Dreams” from Fleetwood Mac by no other than Frankie Knuckles and Eric Kupper.. I have always, will always love FK’s production. Rich, wide, smooth I am running out of  adjectives.. And if you want to feel the FK’s touch just scroll to 20:39:00 and bang one second after  that bass you hear coming, this IS FK signature right there.. I heard it too many times live not to recognize it, it just pumps precisely when the tune needs it.. Without it the track would be perfect but lacking soul, lacking a heart beat.. The Bass line is the pulse. Enjoy!   "The OtherSide".. well it is a bridge track. I needed to change key and keep the wide production theme going, set being recorded live .. key and beat matched, it was enough for me.. Well… you got a House Diva. First time I notice Roz Brown as a vocalist.. She can sing!   My mash-up of Lars Behrenroth’s ( of Deeper Shades of House fame) “Madness Last Night”.. Many reasons to be happy there.. Lars is one of the reason I do this because I remember listening to his sets 10 years ago and thinking I should try to do this.. Not that I am in any way comparing my crap with his immense talent but he is one of my inspirations.. Furthermore nothing makes me more happy than to buy tunes from people I respect and have connected with through Facebook and the likes. Finally I am actually pretty “stoked” to use the term being thrown around by all the Australian Olympians with what I did.. Great track from Lars and half decent mash-up from Xtian..   “If We Only Had Tonight” from Husky… immense Australian talent ( why does he NEVER come to Melbourne??).. Epitome of the happy tune and you are getting double dose because I ripped twice the Discopolis Remix in Traktor and saved it in extremis by the skin of my teeth with the OM.. Set is live.. would be have been in the bin.. I love everything, the production, the build in the synth, the filters, Carl Hanaghan doing a dirty sick job on the remix.. Have fun and smile..   “Tonight” Earnshaw and Mike Scott.. need I say more… oh yes.. Chappell , yes indeed there is “something special tonight”.. Not sure it counts as a happy songs per se.. but it made ME happy dropping it.. Rich production again and if you want to hear what I mean by the Frankie K’s bass pulse scroll to 48.59 and wait for the bass heartbeat coming a second after… Earnshaw showing he can do it just as well..   Another sugar Happy Pill with “Boy is Mine” from OtherSoul ( please hit the Like button on their Facebook page very talented producers and remixers).. Tunes has a house and R'n'B feel. Pure love and I dare you to listen and not have a wie grin on your face.. Ought to be prescribed to sad people and reimbursed!   “Everybody Loves”. From Phil & Dan.. another bridge tune thrown in because I could not find the beat of what I had originally planned to drop and I was running out of bars.. Not quite sure it fits the theme but it worked and I love the cow bells sounding percussions and yes My House is Your House and Your House is Mine works ALL THE TIME.. J   Now let’s go to something REALLY SPECIAL… way back from 2001 “Loving You” from Smurf and Perry the Vincenzo's Remix!!! DO NOT MISS!!!   If ,like me, you are discovering this track, you are in for a treat.. When I first heard it on GN’s Housecall in the "Do You remember House" section, I just could not believe that A) I had never heard such a great track B) that it had been produced in 2001!!   Pure bliss of a tune, perfect production and take it from someone who does not like jazz most of the time, it has the most perfect blend of jazzy undertones.. Bass is driving the track from alpha to omega, intricate percussions, great vocals from Concha Buika.. and then there is the classical piano progression at the start and end of the track.. Just telling you that this is A VERY VERY RARE HOUSE GEM..   It goes straight to my top ten.. and knocked a MAW track I never thought could be knocked off..   Additional info to the track.. I searched everywhere on the LEGAL net for the track, Traxsource, Beatport, Juno, Discodogs..etc.. to no avail, no file, no vinyl.. nothing.. I ended up hitting Shane D (host of the show and legendary remixer/producer/DJ from Durban SA) to ask if he could help me to find the tune.. He just sent the vinyl output by return.. Many thanks and much respect.. I had done something for him a few years back without expecting anything. Karma.. they say.. Almost Spring...but not quite! (12C in Melbourne today)   Indeed, Downunder where I am, it is almost Spring, yet we are absolutely freezing our proverbial t#itts off! With this in mind, here is an unpretentious little disco/funky/beach number blending new takes on old favourites and current funky releases. Since I suffered a total meltdown of my music database, I am in full rebuilding mode and will for a few weeks(I Hope) only access my most recent purchases, the rest being buried deep in the back-ups I thankfully did. After a few very satisfactory and well received progressive sets, I am going back to soulful for a few uploads. To a certain extent a “cleansing” move, though the current offering in soulful still leaves me wanting. I had very few choices having to deal with the corrupted library and still learning to tame the new Traktor S2. Got lazy in some transitions and took a minute and a half to beat match a recalcitrant downbeat in the last track hence the fact that you get the loop for that long.  I could have cut and edited it but to keep the live feel I chose not to and anyhow this was not an upload I wanted perfect. Moloko   Highlights: In as much as I did not have much choice with the selection with my corrupted library, I believe I manage to at least dig out good tunes.Here we go: "Come On" by Satin Jackets, perfect example of great production centered around a classic piano riff, 5 chords in progression, a thumping bass and one vocal hook sample.. yet  a perfect tune, which would set the mood for any pro DJ out there.. Love it! "Riders on The Storms" got to love a classic.. I knew I had chosen right when my wife first whinged hearing the intro and then told me .. " wow that's a cool remix".. To top it a yound Catalan to whom I had given a take to listen to asked me for the track.. Cleverly done, again great massive bassline and just two chords recalling the melody throughout the track.. I do not know Peter Oaks ( got it from Soundcloud) but he is one talented man. "Give Me the Night" DJ Meme's take on the George Benson classic.. Me like ;).. Ever since I heard Meme given a lesson to Dimitri on how to play to/with the crownd in melbourne a few years ago, I have the outmost respect. His trademark funky/happy rich production is there. The original is enhanced, revisited but not lost.. "So Tight" from DJ Fudge & Kiko Navarro, the very same comments than the ones for the frist track "Come On" apply.. Somehow even a more simple production, a piano lick, a voice sample, a clever bassline, a filter here and there and here we go, we have a a great tune.. A lesson in simple but effective production.. from Fudge and Navarro.. Young talent listen and learn ;).. Oh.. I almost forgot, Xtian had to edit it with the Phuture Akabu's sample.. He just had to.. "Far Away" from MdCL feat. Lady Alma. A freebie from the Layabouts soundcloud page.. The epitomous beachy tune for me.. The right key, the right percussions, a great vocalist and a great melody.. Add to that the Layabouts treatment and we are in Beach House bliss.. "Hang On to Your Love" from Funky Judge feat Fassy. I may have used this remix before.. It just felt right. Suffice to say i love the tune but really the beats matched and I was by that time well under way and starting to feel the mix.. Dropped the sample on top of it, sample, which I later tamed for I am not sure anyone but but wants to hear "house made it good house made it right", but was fun to use the new Traktor remix deck and be able to filter the crap out of some part! It (sort of) works, I am too lazy to edit it post mix.. Before I forget, whoever this Fassie is, great vocalist. "Turn Around (Brighter Days)" Scott Diaz's freebie from his soundcould page.. Apparently they had a blue with the vocalist who is not credited and they ended up releasing it for free.. A pity, she is great and whatever disagreement she might have had, this magnificient piece of soulful, beach inspirted tune would have been great for her profile.. Anyhow great job from Mr Diaz..  "Set Fire On the Rain (OtherSoul Bootleg).. With the last track of the mix, definitively the absolute stand-out of the set. Again a freebie from Soundcloud, which I think I got alerted to by Hayden.. Not sure who OtherSoul is but please check their soundcloud page, they are immensely talented and their ptreatment of the Layabouts' an original take on Adele forces the outmost respect. "The Sun Has Come" Joey Negro's take on Ayala's tune..  Had to drop this one in a beachy/funky set and it fitted perfectly. As expected from Joey it is just perfectly produced.. Really with Grant Nelson, Joey Negro is my favourite UK house music producers hands-down..  "Cada Vez" from The Cube Guys feat. Alexandra Prince of So Many Times Fame.. This one is one of my favourite happy house tunes and a Freakazoid standard for those who can remember.. Michael Gray is doing justice to this house anthem and I am sure that some of house will shed a nostalgic tear.. "SuperStar" another freebie from the OtherSol soundcloud page... the only "weak" tune of the lot, not that OtherSoul's remix is bad, just that maybe the tune was over promoted a few years ago.. But I remember listening to the tune when our first born was a toddler, my own moment of nostalgia.. Now for the piece de resistance... "Forever More" the Moloko absolute anthem. Somehow I had either forgotten or totally missed the Francois K Vocal Mix which I heard on the Defected podcast.. I actually bought the DDD compilation just for this track.. I twisted it just enough for it to have a proper intro and fit into the down beat.. But please JUST LISTEN to this track, Francois Kerkovian showing why he is one of the top 10 "godfather" of House.. This track has EVERYTHING, the melody, the production, it is soulful, sexy, tech. deep. Again simplicity rules.. Considering the paucity of what I had in front of me, corrupted library/database and a certain tired of soulful feeling, I believe I did "ok".. Next one is a little challenge I have given myself (but with the same library limitations).. A male voices only set.. after being asked by someone why I rarely use soulful tunes with male voices, I thought I would dig deep and put something half decent together..
