The winds of change are blowing through the world's maritime hubs…despite some national governments' efforts to the contrary. While the shipping industry carries 90% of global trade, it also leaves a heavy carbon trail in its wake. In this episode of Cities 1.5, we explore the high-stakes transformation of our global ports: once seen as industrial hotspots of pollution, these urban harbours are emerging as the front lines of the green transition. We dive into the groundbreaking "Green Shipping Corridors" that are linking sustainable cities, and the bold shift toward zero-emission fuels. From local air quality to global supply chains, discover how cities are turning the tide on emissions and steering the industry toward a 1.5°C future. It's time to rethink the horizon: clearer skies and smoother sailing ahead.Featured guests: Eric Garcetti, C40 Ambassador for Global Climate Diplomacy and former Mayor of Los AngelesAlisa Kreynes, Director of Ports and Shipping at C40Featured clips:The Shipping Forecast - BBC Radio 4Global shipping emissions vote on a knife edge at IMO - BBC Business TodayLinks:Greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution from global shipping, 2016–2023 - The International Council on Clean TransportationA guide to the IMO's Net-Zero Framework - Global Maritime ForumLandmark deal to cut global shipping emissions in tatters after US pressure - BBC NewsPorts and Shipping - C40 Knowledge HubGreen shipping corridors programme - C40 Cities websiteFrom Los Angeles to Shanghai, the port cities collaborating to cut shipping emissions - ReutersGreen Ports Forum - C40 Cities websiteWhy should we talk about a 'just and equitable' transition for shipping? - UN Trade and DevelopmentRescuing shipping's Net Zero Framework - Climate AnalyticsCities take the global stage to showcase climate action at the IMO for the first time - C40 Cities websiteIf you want to learn more about the Journal of City Climate Policy and Economy, please visit our website at https://jccpe.utpjournals.press/Listen to the Cities 1.5 five-part miniseries “Going Steady with Herman Daly: How to Unbreak the Economy (and the Planet)" here: https://lnk.to/HDMiniSeriesCities 1.5 is produced by the University of Toronto Press and the C40 Centre, and is supported by C40 Cities. From fossil fuel lobbying to coordinated political disinformation campaigns, vested interests have built a profitable disinformation infrastructure designed to spread confusion, polarize debate, and exhaust the public. The good news is that the world is waking up. For the first time in the history of the COP, a Declaration on Information Integrity was agreed upon, with governments committing to address climate disinformation and promote accurate, evidence-based information globally. But we need to go further upstream - instead of simply fighting falsehoods, we need to build ecosystems where truth can take root and flourish. In this episode, we look to Brazil and speak to an individual who was integral in bringing information integrity both to COP and the international agenda. She makes the case for cities as one of the most powerful forces in reclaiming the narrative, building the infrastructure of truth from the ground up - one community at a time.Featured guest: Thais Lazzeri, Investigative Journalist and Founder of FALALinks:Declaration on Information Integrity on Climate Change - UNESCOIntegrity Information Observatory - OiiMentiro Tem Preco (Lies Have a Price)Climate Information Integrity5 Million Acts for Truth - FALATomorrow is today - YouTube (Portuguese)500 Grams of Life - Thais Lazzeri (Portuguese) ‘Democracy on the line': Brazil's election and the Bolsonaro disinformation ecosystem - Columbia Journalism ReviewEnvironmental and Climatic Disinformation in Northern Brazil: Dynamics and Impact in the Context of COP-30 - Heinrich Boll StiftungEnvironmental journalism and the struggle against disinformation in Brazil - Frontiers in CommunicationIf you want to learn more about the Journal of City Climate Policy and Economy, please visit our website at https://jccpe.utpjournals.press/Listen to the Cities 1.5 five-part miniseries “Going Steady with Herman Daly: How to Unbreak the Economy (and the Planet)" here: https://lnk.to/HDMiniSeriesCities 1.5 is produced by the University of Toronto Press and the C40 Centre, and is supported by C40 Cities. As our lives become increasingly digital, the infrastructure powering them is sparking a global debate: we need data centres, but at what cost to the climate and our access to energy? These massive facilities are the backbone of everything from streaming to AI, yet they consume staggering amounts of electricity and water, often straining local grids and and in some cases, threatening to derail decarbonisation efforts. In this episode of Cities 1.5, we explore how Ireland became the "canary in the coalmine" for this issue. With data centres projected to consume nearly 30% of the nation's electricity by 2030, the Irish experience serves as a critical warning – and a roadmap – for cities worldwide. We examine the tension between economic ambition and climate mandates, questioning how urban leaders can manage the rapid expansion of digital infrastructure without derailing net-zero goals. Join us as we dive into the lessons learned from the frontlines of the data centre boom and what they mean for the future of sustainable cities.Featured guest: Professor Hannah Daly, Professor of Sustainable Energy at University College CorkLinks:Ireland's data centre boom is driving up fossil fuel dependence - The Irish Times, by Professor Hannah DalyData Centres Metered Electricity Consumption 2024 - Central Statistics OfficeEnergy for who? Cities aren't just structures. They're people. In the rapidly urbanising cities of the global majority, many of those people are migrant workers.  They often work informally, with limited protection when shocks hit. At the same time, they are vital to propping up and rebuilding cities after climate disasters. Across the United States, cities are acting as climate first responders - carrying climate action forward even as national politics grow more hostile. From clean energy and buildings to transport, land use and resilience to extreme weather events, mayors are proving that climate leadership does not depend on federal permission. It grows from proximity: to people, to impacts, and to the places leaders are entrusted to protect. Cities are stepping in to safeguard neighbourhoods, rivers, urban ecosystems and public health, often while the federal government undermines climate policy or attacks local authority.Featured guests:Keith Wilson, Mayor of Portland, Oregon, USAKirk Watson, Mayor of Austin, Texas, USAJuliet Oluoch, Research fellow at Ustawi Analytica and youth climate activist from Nairobi, KenyaLinks:Solved: How the World's Great Cities Are Fixing the Climate Crisis by David MillerThe Fate of the Inflation Reduction Act in the Second Era of Trump - Cities 1.5Trump signs order to withdraw US from Paris climate agreement for second time - The Guardian‘Poet, writer, wife, mom': who was Renee Nicole Good, the woman killed by an ICE agent? - The GuardianMayor Keith Wilson Announces Portland Has Reached more than 1,500 Emergency Overnight Beds, Delivered at Unprecedented Speed - Portland.govCostumed protesters in Portland defy description of the city as a 'war zone' - NBC NewsAustin Climate Equity Plan$3,000 grants offered to groups addressing climate change and food access challenges - Austin MonitorMore links for this episode available at jccpe.utpjournals.press and c40.org.If you want to learn more about the Journal of City Climate Policy and Economy, please visit our website at https://jccpe.utpjournals.press/ Listen to the Cities 1.5 five-part miniseries “Going Steady with Herman Daly: How to Unbreak the Economy (and the Planet)" here: https://lnk.to/HDMiniSeries Cities 1.5 is produced by the University of Toronto Press and the C40 Centre, and is supported by C40 Cities. We follow Herman from the lecture halls of Louisiana to the forests of Brazil – and through a period of global upheaval and personal transformation. Herman was profoundly shaped by the realities of inequality and ecological fragility in the Global South. These experiences helped crystallize his vision of a steady-state economy; one that operates within the planet's ecological limits and prioritizes human wellbeing and ecological boundaries over endless growth. With reflections from his family and followers, this episode captures the moment Daly's thinking moved from quiet resistance to creating economic theories that would go on to have a truly global influence. Featured in this episode:Colvis Cavalcanti, ecological economistBrian Czech, Author of Shoveling Fuel for a Runaway Train and executive director of the Center for the Advancement of the Steady State EconomyRob Dietz, Program Director at the Post-Carbon Institute, co-author of Enough is Enough, and co-host of Crazy TownTerri Daly Stewart, Senior Occupational Therapist and Herman and Marcia's eldest daughterKaren Daly Junker, Senior Manager of Provenance Research at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and Herman and Marcia's youngest daughterDenis Lynn Daly Heyck (Deni), Professor Emeritus of Spanish language and literature and Herman's sisterKaty Shields, Regenerative economist and co-creator/host of Tipping PointPeter Victor, Professor Emeritus of ecological economics & author of Herman Daly's Economics for a Full WorldKate Raworth, Author of Doughnut Economics and co-founder of the Doughnut Economics Action LabThank you to the Daly family for their generous support in sharing Herman's story.Thank you also to our series consultants and fact checkers, Peter Harnik, Rob Dietz, and Peter Victor, who also graciously supplied the interview tape with Herman Daly, recorded in 2022.Visit the Cities 1.5 podcast page on UTP's website for the media citations used in this episode. If you want to learn more about the Journal of City Climate Policy and Economy, please visit our website: https://jccpe.utpjournals.press/ Cities 1.5 is produced by the University of Toronto Press and Cities 1.5 is supported by C40 Cities and the C40 Centre for City Climate Policy and Economy. Herman Daly was a founding father of ecological economics: more than half a century ago, he warned that the pursuit of endless economic growth was driving ecological collapse and harming society, as well as harming society - and came up with a plan to unbreak our economy. Dismissed by mainstream economists, pushed out of the World Bank, and even targeted by menacing, anonymous threats, Daly paid a high price for challenging our unsustainable global system. But now, as climate breakdown accelerates and the failures of neoliberalism become increasingly apparent, his ideas are more relevant - and more vital - than ever. Now is the time for his theories and his legacy to get the attention they deserve. In the opening episode, we hear from the person who knew his story best: himself. Featuring never-heard-before interviews with Herman, alongside reflections from a whole host of experts, scholars and collaborators. We trace his childhood battle with polio, his whirlwind romance with his wife, Marcia and the moment Herman discovered the first piece of the puzzle in solving the intertwined economic, societal and climate crises: the concept of uneconomic growth.Featured in this episode:Peter Victor, Professor emeritus of ecological economics and author of Herman Daly's Economics for a Full WorldGaya Herrington, Wellbeing economist & thought leaderJoshua Farley, Professor of ecological economicsKatherine Trebeck, Political Economist & writerDenis (Deni) Lynn Daly Heyck, Professor Emeritus of Spanish Language and Literature and Herman's sisterTerri Daly Stewart, Senior Occupational Therapist, and Herman and Marcia's elder daughterKaren Daly Junker, Senior Manager of Provenance Research at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, and Herman and Marcia's younger daughterThank you to the Daly family for their generous support in sharing Herman's story, and to Barbara Barros for voicing Marcia Daly's email in this episode. Tales From Southern Indiana

Back in the day, one of the calls of alarm from parents and educators had to do with the rash of teenagers “going steady”. According to some, the antidote to such activity was to encourage teenage girls to stay home with Mother and listen to old records. Even worse, the prevalence of “petting parties” drew suggestions of armed responses. As always, the local townsfolk were ever vigilant to make sure that nobody had any fun. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/danny-howell/message

Buzzcocks first three proper studio albums, released from 1977-'81, are all very good but nothing released by the band (or really any other band) before or since can touch their 1979 singles compilation.  Whether or not you're a fan of Punk, Pop Punk, Power Pop or the fucking Beatles, Singles Going Steady is undeniable.  It's a lesson in world class song writing with a driving pulse and hooks for days.  None of your favorite bands exist without it.      RIP Pete Shelley  RIP Bob Nalbandian   Recommended Listening:   EP67:  The Very Best of Daryl Hall & John Oates https://huntsmanhill.com/2018/06/25/ep67-hall-oates-the-very-best-of-daryl-hall-john-oates/   EP142:  Compilations  https://huntsmanhill.com/2020/12/06/ep142-compilations/   EP145:  Band Compilations https://huntsmanhill.com/2021/01/11/ep145-band-compilations/   Jawbox “Airwaves Dream” https://open.spotify.com/track/6txJ4dXM6JSsFePWN1txCd?si=42a38f9297e443d5   Playlist “Friend Zone:  Bradman Chapley"  https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1AkTwWJaPealDOicwlwfKt?si=108791b5657844f6   Contact us at:  huntsmanhillpodcast@gmail.com Spotify Playlist:  https://open.spotify.com/user/1298220429/playlist/4gy1wWwypkoFS2lUztvZ44?si=waSq07DBQlq3x9G1_nK0pg   HHPP Amazon Affiliates Store https://huntsmanhill.com/2022/06/09/hhpp-store/   Our Music manhuntsman:  https://open.spotify.com/artist/7tFBWn0UFkdOEMf67TRD6W?si=vzllkbDwSEmfZFlj02GLRwAcademy O.C:  https://academyoc.bandcamp.com/album/academy-o-c   Omertà 68:  https://open.spotify.com/artist/6dfiCa0qTlbPQUrqtIkStS?si=6SCjNtXbSO2xRBDuBKJelQ   huntsmanhill.com instagram.com/huntsmanhill https://twitter.com/HuntsmanHill

Welcome to the pregame of a great Memorial Day Weekend. Today we talk about Farley and Musk getting cozy, tactile buttons making a comeback, and a touch of our childhood coming to DFW Airport. In a landmark move towards EV infrastructure unification, Ford announced a deal with Tesla to access its Supercharger network from 2024 which will allow Ford's electric vehicles to use Tesla's extensive charging network. The announcement came, appropriately, from Ford CEO Jim Farley and Tesla CEO Elon Musk on Twitter Spaces yesterday. This deal makes Ford the first major automaker to adopt Tesla's proprietary charging standard, connecting Ford's EVs to the largest high-speed Supercharger network in the U.S.Ford electric vehicles fitted with the Combined Charging System (CCS) port will be able to access Tesla's V3 Superchargers through a Tesla-developed adapter. From 2025, Ford plans to equip future EVs with Tesla's charging standard, eliminating the need for an adapter.Goodbye, frustrating touchscreens, hello old friend: Buttons are back! Responding to considerable consumer dissatisfaction, several leading car manufacturers are reversing the trend of intricate touch screens that have dominated dashboard design in recent years. Notably, Porsche is leading the charge by reintroducing buttons in their 2024 Cayenne model.Nissan and Hyundai are also lauded in the article for resisting the touch screen trend, underscoring a conscious commitment towards ensuring driver safety.2013 guidance from the NHTSA recommends that a driver should be able to complete any infotainment task with glances of under two seconds, with the total time spent looking away from the road not exceeding 12 secondsTouchscreens also happen to be the cheapest way to add functionalityThe iconic toy store of your childhood, Toys R Us, wants to help you make good use of those layovers with a new store in Terminal A of the Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, marking its first-ever airport location. The store will feature a life-size 3D giraffe and an array of top brand toys, and is scheduled to open in time for the 2023 holiday seasonYehuda Shmidman, CEO of WHP Global, who acquired Toys R Us in 2021, said in an announcement that the concept could be introduced in airports worldwide. Welcome to Wednesday as we're covering an announcement by GM and Hertz to move some serious EV volume through rental fleets. We also talk about what the lithium supply is looking like as well as the effects of rising interest rates on Dealers and home owners alike.GM and Hertz announced a joint agreement for the automaker to  provide 175k EVs to Hertz rental fleet through 2027 Order will include Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, Cadillac and BrightDrop EVs through 2027Deliveries are set to begin in Q1 2023 with the Chevy BoltHertz is investing to create the largest rental fleet of EVs in North America, with tens of thousands of EVs available for rent at 500 Hertz locations across 38 states. The company's current goal is for one-quarter of its fleet to be electric by the end of 2024.“It's exciting that two iconic American companies that have shaped the evolution of transportation for more than a century are coming together to redefine the future of mobility in the 21st century,” said Stephen Scherr, Hertz CEO. Many of the EVs are expected to be deployed in LA and SF due to fast approaching restrictions on ICE vehiclesIn 2021 Hertz ordered 100k Teslas which are nearing fulfillmentEV Demand and supply SNAFUs have pushed prices of the critical component in EV batteries, Lithium, to an all time highLithium carbonate prices in China, the benchmark in the fast-growing market, hit $71,000 a metric ton, according to price-assessment firm Benchmark Mineral Intelligence. This is about four times as high as a year agoPrices are basically following the Chinese EV market which is explodingMajor US automakers have struck deals with lithium producers to secure supplyOver 80% of lithium-ion batteries are used for EVs, said Daisy Jennings-Gray, senior analyst at Benchmark Mineral Intelligence. That will increase to 90% in 2030, Benchmark forecasts, up from 40% in 2015.Refining is and will continue to be a major bottleneck in the production of battery grade lithium“I would like once again to urge entrepreneurs to enter the lithium refining business,” Tesla Chief Executive Elon Musk told analysts in July. “There's lithium pretty much everywhere, but you have to refine the lithium into battery-grade lithium carbonate and lithium hydroxide, which has extremely high purity. So it is basically like minting money right now.”Rising interest rates are seriously affecting real estate purchases, home equity, and wealth building. And remember, most Dealers have variable rate loans. Every 1% point rise in interest rates equates to 10% less purchasing powerRates are double what they were this time last year meaning 2.9 a year ago  vs 6.1 now. 2.1% delta = 21% less purchasing power$400k home last year is now only $316k with the same mo paymentHome prices remain up however the correction is happeningGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/Share your positive dealer stories: https://www.asotu.com/positivityASOTU Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/automotivestateoftheunion

Going Steady and Ging Nang Boyz were at the forefront of Japan's seishun punk, or "youth punk", scene in the early-mid 2000's. During this time their music explored themes of teenage alienation, self-acceptance, and wide-eyed true love, with the uncomfortable shadow of sexual neuroses looming over much of it. In this episode we talk about how these ideas were addressed as the band evolved, the moments where they capture just what it feels like to be young and dumb, and even times when they might be problematic.
