Back in the day, one of the calls of alarm from parents and educators had to do with the rash of teenagers “going steady”. According to some, the antidote to such activity was to encourage teenage girls to stay home with Mother and listen to old records. Even worse, the prevalence of “petting parties” drew suggestions of armed responses. As always, the local townsfolk were ever vigilant to make sure that nobody had any fun. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/danny-howell/message
Buzzcocks first three proper studio albums, released from 1977-'81, are all very good but nothing released by the band (or really any other band) before or since can touch their 1979 singles compilation. Whether or not you're a fan of Punk, Pop Punk, Power Pop or the fucking Beatles, Singles Going Steady is undeniable. It's a lesson in world class song writing with a driving pulse and hooks for days. None of your favorite bands exist without it. Welcome to the pregame of a great Memorial Day Weekend. Today we talk about Farley and Musk getting cozy, tactile buttons making a comeback, and a touch of our childhood coming to DFW Airport. In a landmark move towards EV infrastructure unification, Ford announced a deal with Tesla to access its Supercharger network from 2024 which will allow Ford's electric vehicles to use Tesla's extensive charging network. The announcement came, appropriately, from Ford CEO Jim Farley and Tesla CEO Elon Musk on Twitter Spaces yesterday. This deal makes Ford the first major automaker to adopt Tesla's proprietary charging standard, connecting Ford's EVs to the largest high-speed Supercharger network in the U.S.Ford electric vehicles fitted with the Combined Charging System (CCS) port will be able to access Tesla's V3 Superchargers through a Tesla-developed adapter. From 2025, Ford plans to equip future EVs with Tesla's charging standard, eliminating the need for an adapter.Goodbye, frustrating touchscreens, hello old friend: Buttons are back! Responding to considerable consumer dissatisfaction, several leading car manufacturers are reversing the trend of intricate touch screens that have dominated dashboard design in recent years. Notably, Porsche is leading the charge by reintroducing buttons in their 2024 Cayenne model.Nissan and Hyundai are also lauded in the article for resisting the touch screen trend, underscoring a conscious commitment towards ensuring driver safety.2013 guidance from the NHTSA recommends that a driver should be able to complete any infotainment task with glances of under two seconds, with the total time spent looking away from the road not exceeding 12 secondsTouchscreens also happen to be the cheapest way to add functionalityThe iconic toy store of your childhood, Toys R Us, wants to help you make good use of those layovers with a new store in Terminal A of the Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, marking its first-ever airport location. The store will feature a life-size 3D giraffe and an array of top brand toys, and is scheduled to open in time for the 2023 holiday seasonYehuda Shmidman, CEO of WHP Global, who acquired Toys R Us in 2021, said in an announcement that the concept could be introduced in airports worldwide. Welcome to Wednesday as we're covering an announcement by GM and Hertz to move some serious EV volume through rental fleets. We also talk about what the lithium supply is looking like as well as the effects of rising interest rates on Dealers and home owners alike.GM and Hertz announced a joint agreement for the automaker to provide 175k EVs to Hertz rental fleet through 2027 Order will include Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, Cadillac and BrightDrop EVs through 2027Deliveries are set to begin in Q1 2023 with the Chevy BoltHertz is investing to create the largest rental fleet of EVs in North America, with tens of thousands of EVs available for rent at 500 Hertz locations across 38 states. The company's current goal is for one-quarter of its fleet to be electric by the end of 2024.“It's exciting that two iconic American companies that have shaped the evolution of transportation for more than a century are coming together to redefine the future of mobility in the 21st century,” said Stephen Scherr, Hertz CEO. Many of the EVs are expected to be deployed in LA and SF due to fast approaching restrictions on ICE vehiclesIn 2021 Hertz ordered 100k Teslas which are nearing fulfillmentEV Demand and supply SNAFUs have pushed prices of the critical component in EV batteries, Lithium, to an all time highLithium carbonate prices in China, the benchmark in the fast-growing market, hit $71,000 a metric ton, according to price-assessment firm Benchmark Mineral Intelligence. This is about four times as high as a year agoPrices are basically following the Chinese EV market which is explodingMajor US automakers have struck deals with lithium producers to secure supplyOver 80% of lithium-ion batteries are used for EVs, said Daisy Jennings-Gray, senior analyst at Benchmark Mineral Intelligence. That will increase to 90% in 2030, Benchmark forecasts, up from 40% in 2015.Refining is and will continue to be a major bottleneck in the production of battery grade lithium“I would like once again to urge entrepreneurs to enter the lithium refining business,” Tesla Chief Executive Elon Musk told analysts in July. “There's lithium pretty much everywhere, but you have to refine the lithium into battery-grade lithium carbonate and lithium hydroxide, which has extremely high purity. So it is basically like minting money right now.”Rising interest rates are seriously affecting real estate purchases, home equity, and wealth building. To support this ministry financially, visit: https://www.oneplace.com/donate/1085/29 We used to call an exclusive dating relationship going steady. That's not an option these days when designating one's relationship status. Still, it's helpful in another way. Going steady is still a good way to describe another serious and sustained commitment: making regular investments. I'll talk about that first today with investing expert Mark Biller. Mark Biller is the executive editor at Sound Mind Investing. Then it's on to your calls at 800-525-7000. The going steady approach refers to automating your investing by having a predetermined amount of money regularly transferred from your bank account to an investment account. Dollar-cost-averaging works with you contributing the same amount each paycheck to your retirement account. When the market's up, you buy fewer shares and when it's down, you buy more shares. And it always pays off in the long run. In the article from Sound Mind Investing, there are six advantages of automating your investing described. The first is self-discipline. The next advantage is that automated investing eliminates the need to ask the question, Is this a good time to buy stocks? That question is a huge barrier to making new investments. The next advantage of dollar-cost averaging. You get more for your money and it pays off in the long run. The next advantage is efficiency. If you're using mutual funds, it allows you to purchase fractional fund shares. Peace of mind is another advantage. Making small monthly investments is way easier emotionally than putting a lot of money at risk all at once. The last advantage is the ease of getting started. At most brokerage firms and fund companies, you can open an investment account with a relatively small amount or even no upfront money at all. The easiest way to set up a plan is if your employer has a retirement plan, like a 401k or 403b for you to participate through. You might also get some matching contributions if you go this route, so it's worth checking there first. If your employer doesn't offer you an automated plan, the next best choice for most people is to set up an IRA with a broker or mutual fund company. You can read more about this in their monthly newsletter at SoundMindInvesting.org. The article is titled Going Steady: The Advantages of a Systematic Investment Plan. On today's program we also answer a couple of your questions: We are involved in a bankruptcy and I was approached about refinancing. Is this something smart to consider? I have a vacant property and someone has just asked to buy it. My husband is concerned about the tax penalty. Can you help us on this? Horror movies often inspire sleepless nights. But one that had its American premiere 75 years ago this week inspired something different: a new model of the universe. “Dead of Night” was a British production. In it, an architect is invited to a country house for the weekend. Although he's never met any of the people there, he recognizes them from a series of nightmares, which he recounts. At the end, he murders one of the people. He then awakens and realizes it was all a dream. But he then gets a phone call inviting him to the house — starting the nightmare all over again. Three British physicists — Thomas Gold, Hermann Bondi, and Fred Hoyle — were pondering the beginning and end of the universe. They knew that the universe was expanding, but they didn't agree with the idea that it had a single point of origin. Hoyle even called the theory the “Big Bang” as a term of derision. Instead, they thought the universe had neither a beginning nor an end. After they saw the movie, Gold wondered whether the universe might be similar — constantly “starting over.” So they came up with their own theory of the universe — the Steady State Theory. It said that matter was constantly being created as the universe expanded. That way, the universe would maintain a constant density. And it would just keep going — forever. Observations confirmed the Big Bang, though, leaving the Steady State alone — in the dead of night. Script by Damond Benningfield Support McDonald Observatory

UK.PROJECTって本当に素敵な会社! 今回もそんなUK.PROJECTの雰囲気が伝わる回ですので、雰囲気含めたっぷりお楽しみください。 番組を聴いた感想や質問は、#UKPラジオ をつけてツイートしてください! ▼UKPラジオ・プレイリスト:https://spoti.fi/2NKXxsy ▼UKPラジオ・Twitterアカウント:https://twitter.com/ukp_radio
Going Steady and Ging Nang Boyz were at the forefront of Japan's seishun punk, or "youth punk", scene in the early-mid 2000's. During this time their music explored themes of teenage alienation, self-acceptance, and wide-eyed true love, with the uncomfortable shadow of sexual neuroses looming over much of it. In this episode we talk about how these ideas were addressed as the band evolved, the moments where they capture just what it feels like to be young and dumb, and even times when they might be problematic.
UKPラジオの第40回は、UK.PROJECTの歴史 vol.4! UK.PROJECTが設立した1991年。

The Great Gildersleeve (1941-1957), initially written by Leonard Lewis Levinson, was one of broadcast history's earliest spin-off programs. Built around Throckmorton P. Gildersleeve, a character who had been a staple on the classic radio situation comedy Fibber McGee and Molly, The Great Gildersleeve enjoyed its greatest success in the 1940s. Actor Harold Peary played the character during its transition from the parent show into the spin-off and later in a quartet of feature films released at the height of the show's popularity. On Fibber McGee and Molly, Peary's Gildersleeve was a pompous windbag who became a consistent McGee nemesis. "You're a haa-aa-aa-aard man, McGee!" became a Gildersleeve catch phrase. The character was given several conflicting first names on Fibber McGee and Molly, and on one episode his middle name was revealed as Philharmonic. Gildy admits as much at the end of "Gildersleeve's Diary" on the Fibber McGee and Molly series 10/22/40. He soon became so popular that Kraft Foods - looking primarily to promote its Parkay margarine spread - sponsored a new series with Peary's Gildersleeve as the central, slightly softened, and slightly befuddled focus of a lively new family. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/daniel-lantz/message

Mookie Morris is a singer-songwriter and guitar player. Mookie started playing music at the age of 12, and has played in many bands before being featured on Canadian Idol and becoming a nationally recognized artist. We talk about Mookie’s wild foray into live shows, his early teenage bands, and reaching his early dreams by being signed to Sony Music at 18, and the aftermath of being on the other side. We talk about his solo project, to being in a democratic band where he slipped into the back from centre stage and his now re-emergence as a front person. With Owen Norquay on Bass, and Luis Figueroa on Drums, The Mooks are releasing new singles every two weeks with “Going Steady and “It’s Not Easy” so far released. I almost changed forever the entire way people define relationships. The word "commitment" would have a new meaning. More babies would be born. I'm thinking BIG. Sometimes you want to try an idea and you don't let yourself think about money. If an idea is good, money is a side effect. Ideas are the real currency. I met a brand new couple for breakfast. J and K. They told me they just had the "going steady" conversation. "How'd you guys meet?" "J-Swipe". Or something like that. I forget. It was an online dating app. "What does 'going steady' mean when you are both in your 40s?" I asked. J was in his 40s. K wasn't. I wondered if 'going steady' meant that he gave her a ring or something. There's only so many more 'going steady's you have left in you at that age. They both pulled out their phones. They were looking at each other's phone and then showing me. "We deleted all of the dating apps on our phone," she said. But they were both peering at each other's firm. They needed confirmation. Hmmmm! Idea: The "Going Steady" App Both sides of the couple sign in to the app. Then they select the other person. Then when both sides select each other, the app deletes all the dating apps on their phone. If they ever download a dating app again, the other side gets notified by email. Or if they "de-select" each other from "Going Steady" then both sides get notified by email. Simple! Extras: - Notify FB and Twitter that they are "Going Steady" - Keep track of anniversaries, gifts, places they go, significant memories, etc. - Notify friends of anniversaries, etc. BOOM! The next day I wrote up the "spec", which was actually just similar to what I wrote above. I logged into freelancer.com. I opened a new project and cut and pasted my Spec in there. It was weird to read prior chats I had had on the site. Since the last time I had uploaded a project in there was in 2006. A customer service representative popped up a window and asked if I need help. I said, "Sure, why not?" Meanwhile, within ten minutes I had about ten people bid to do my project. I included in the Spec that they had to not only complete the app in 30 days but upload to the Apple store, the Google Play store, and do basic marketing for me. People were bidding from China, India, and Kenya. The average bid was $1000. I chatted with each one of them to make sure they understood what I was asking. My basic test was this question: can an app on Android and Apple detect and delete other apps on Android and Apple? The customer service representative recommended a developer as well. This developer cost more than $1000. More like $3500. That's ok. I just wanted a good job done. A small price to pay to change the future of evolution. I asked this developer the same question. Some of the developers would not upload to the stores or do any marketing. I crossed them off. Others didn't seem to understand my question about detecting other apps on the phone. I crossed them out. I didn't want any communication problems with people from the opposite side of the world. Finally, the recommended developer said, "I know you can do this on Android but not sure on Apple. Let me research." Five minutes later he came back. "It's impossible to do this on Apple." We tried to figure out a work-around. Like if the device owner gave permissions, etc. But there was no work-around. "Ok," I said, "thanks for your help." End of idea. End of project. Total time it cost me: 45 minutes, from writing the spec, logging into the site, creating the project, talking to the developers. Total money: I paid $29 to have a customer service representative help me. Success? Failure? Neither. It was an idea. I did the execution basics to see if I should pursue further. It didn't. But I learned a lot. What it would cost to make an app, I learned a bit more about the Apple store, and I went through the process of trying to find a developer....

Do one "execution step" each day and it compounds into success. I wrote J. "Remember that idea we spoke about? Here's what I did." And I described. He wrote back. "That's the difference between you and me. We had an idea I was a lazy sack of s**t and you went ahead and tried do it." Meanwhile, he's produced some of the best TV shows of all time. But I almost changed the worldwide definition of "Going steady". I almost increased the world population. Some people say, "Almost doesn't count". But I say, " 'Almost' is is better than nothing. And 'Almost' every day eventually turns into Everything." -- Shortcuts - [24:20] - The top freelancers on the site are making seven figures a year. And the average job makes $166. All good things must come to an end. After 18 months and a ton of fun, Rob and Clive have decided to shutter the Speakeasy. And what better way to finish than in the same way that we started: two blokes in a room, talking about music? We're talking about the art and joy of the single, using the examples that mean an awful lot to us. Expect revelations of a personal nature, and insights into who we are and how we got to be that way. Settle in. This one's gonna be emotional.
