Brent Axe and Chris Carlson recap Syracuse football's 30-13 loss to Pittsburgh at the JMA Dome  Brent and Chris discuss the QB shuffle SU played with Rickie Collins and Luke Carney and how the struggles at the QB position and SU's inability to run a functional offense were costly against Pitt and will be going forward.  Will fans hang around for five more games in what is looking more and more like a developmental season for the Orange, now 3-4 with five games to go?  Brent and Chris also discuss Fran Brown's honest admission of "one of the worst things that I've done" and how a terrific effort by the SU defense was wasted against Pitt.  The conversation on Syracuse Sports and the Syracuse football postgame show is always shaped by terrific insight from Syracuse Sports Insiders.  Become a Syracuse Sports Insider today! Fran Brown still riding with Rickie Collins as QB 1; Syracuse-Pitt preview with Chris Peak

Syracuse football head coach Fran Brown is sticking with Rickie Collins as his starting quarterback out of the Orange's bye week against Pittsburgh.  Can Collins improve from generating nearly 19 points fewer against Power-Four competition for the Orange offense?  According to Pro Football Focus, Collins has a turnover-worthy play percentage of 7.5 percent this season, which means that 7.5 percent of his drop backs this season have resulted in plays were likely to end in a turnover. That is the worst rate in the country among quarterbacks who have at least 100 drop backs this season. Despite playing in just four games and only starting two, Collins is tied for 19th in the country with five interceptions, according to PFF. Brent Axe discusses that and how Fran Brown handled a question about his name coming up for bigger jobs (in this case Penn State) at a recent press conference.  Axe also chats with Chris Peak from Panther Lair to get a preview of the Pitt Panthers squad that comes to the JMA Dome on Saturday. Peak discusses how the Panthers made a significant quarterback change and how it has changed the trajectory of its season, the SU-Pitt series and what (if anything) SU can exploit in a matchup they come into as 10.5-point underdogs.  Music provided by Rumble Strip https://www.youtube.com/@UCJ3LCvPiy9YUP-SJntMs_9g  Soundcloud https://soundcloud.com/rumble_strip/it-could-always-be-worse Would like your original music or know of a great band we should feature on Syracuse Sports? The LSU Tigers hit the field at Tiger Stadium Saturday afternoon for the third spring game of the Brian Kelly era. While spring games are much less of an actual game and much more of a glorified practice, it is still a good opportunity to see the progress of position battles and with which teams certain individuals play. There are several battles shaking out in preseason, whether the secondary or the wide receiver room. Another battle that has ensued during spring practice and will continue to shake out throughout the rest of the summer is the backup quarterback – who will be QB2 behind Garrett Nussmeier? Both Vanderbilt transfer AJ Swann and second-year Rickie Collins got rotations with the second team offense, first Swann then Collins. But did either emerge as a favorite? Plus, LSU baseball has now lost every single series in SEC play thus far after getting swept on the road at Tennessee. The LSU Tigers quarterback room lost its Heisman Trophy starter Jayden Daniels but had third-year player Garrett Nussmeier leading the way in front of true freshman Rickie Collins and 2024 recruit Colin Hurley before bringing in depth, insurance, and experience with former Vanderbilt starting quarterback AJ Swann via the transfer portal. Swann has notched 12 starts and has seen action in 15 games over his last two seasons in Nashville. An elbow injury left him sidelined for a big portion of the 2023 season but after a rough 2-10 season with the Commodores he looks for a fresh start in Baton Rouge. Assuming Nussmeier will be the starter for the Tigers in 2024, Swann provides experience to a quarterback room that doesn't have much of it outside of Nussmeier himself. Ideally Swann will push Nussmeier and create a quarterback competition as LSU prepares for a grind of a 2024 schedule. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! LSU quarterback and Heisman Trophy award winner Jayden Daniels has exhausted his NCAA eligibility and will declare for the 2024 NFL Draft. Backup Garrett Nussmeier has been waiting patiently behind the scenes for his opportunity at the starting job at LSU. Nussmeier could have transferred after Daniels won the job in 2022. Heck, he could've transferred before the 2023 season. Countless programs, both in the SEC and outside of it, could have used the gunslinger's services. But he decided to stay dedicated to LSU and stick it out with the Tigers in hopes that 2024 would be his year, and in all likelihood it will be. But even with Garrett Nussmeier as the incumbent, should the Tigers still consider bringing in an established veteran through the transfer portal?Without Daniels, the Tigers have Nuss and true freshman Rickie Collins who redshirted in the 2023 season. They also intend to sign 4-star quarterback Colin Hurley in the 2024 class. It is a crowded room, but it isn't an experienced room outside of Nussmeier. LSU FOOTBALL QBS: Improvements for Jayden Daniels and Garrett Nussmeier during spring practice

LSU football head coach Brian Kelly met with the media this week to provide updates and insights about his team as they navigate through spring practice. Kelly spoke on all three quarterbacks in the Tigers' QB room this season: returning starter Jayden Daniels, returning QB2 Garrett Nussmeier, and true freshman Rickie Collins. Kelly said the two veterans, Daniels and Nussmeier, are working through their own specific list of improvements. This past season Daniels left several wide open receivers un-targeted and had a tendency to defer to his legs rather than push the ball down field through the air. Kelly said they are working through those things with Daniels to ensure he is a more aggressive QB this season that can take advantage of the talented wide receiver room more than he did last year. Nussmeier, on the other hand, is the exact opposite. Garrett "gun slinger" Nussmeier earned that nickname because of his big arm and willingness to make risky throws and put the ball in tight windows. While that is his greatest strength, it has also led to turnovers. So while Daniels works on moving the ball downfield, Nussmeier is learning discipline. But it is not just Daniels and Nussmeier in the QB room: true freshman Rickie Collins, the four-star recruit from Woodlawn High School in Baton Rouge, also entered onto the scene this spring. Kelly stated Collins has his plate full learning the offense and getting acclimated to the next highest level of football. While it is still early for Collins, at what point will he need to get up to speed in case he needs to answer the call? Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! LSU SPRING PRACTICE | Brian Kelly focused on building on last season, creating championship culture

The LSU Tigers kicked off spring practice on Thursday and even just on day one Brian Kelly realized his team is in a much better place now than it was just one year ago. When Brian Kelly came in to the program last season, he had to re-teach each player how to practice, re-establish expectations, and start to build a winning culture to bring a championship back to Baton Rouge. This season, those players know how to practice. They know the expectations. And the beginning of the construction of a culture is already one year in the making. So last year when Brian Kelly inherited a roster with 75 percent turnover and a whole lot of questions surrounding what the team would look like moving forward, is a completely different narrative this go around. Kelly spoke with the media and provided updates about several players' statuses. The running back room was fairly light on Thursday due to lingering knee injuries to returners Josh Williams and Armoni Goodwin. Plus, John Emery was absent as well as he continues to struggle with what has been plaguing his playing time since the start of the 2021 season. Can incoming freshman Trey Holly carry the load until those three are back healthy and eligible? Finally, Kelly revealed that backup quarterback Garrett Nussmeier underwent a corrective surgery that left him less than 100 percent on day one of spring practice but he should be good to go in about a week. Kelly named Jayden Daniels the starter at the end of the season and that remains to be true, but still will allow incoming freshman and Baton Rouge local Rickie Collins to get reps in practice. So last year when Brian Kelly inherited a roster with 75 percent turnover and a whole lot of questions surrounding what the team would look like moving forward, is a completely different narrative this go around.Kelly spoke with the media and provided updates about several players' statuses. Kelly named Jayden Daniels the starter at the end of the season and that remains to be true, but still will allow incoming freshman and Baton Rouge local Rickie Collins to get reps in practice.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. After LSU's commanding 63-7 victory over the Purdue Boilermakers in the Citrus Bowl, Brian Kelly said he felt very confident that all three quarterbacks on the roster – Jayden Daniels, Garrett Nussmeier, and Walker Howard – would stick around through the spring and the Tigers would move forward in 2023 with the same depth chart they had this past season, plus incoming freshman Rickie Collins. But just two weeks after BK felt good about all of his signal callers returning to the purple and gold, true freshman Walker Howard announced he will enter the transfer portal. So what changed since Kelly made that exclamation? Is Howard ready to be a starting QB in college football? In the last four days, LSU landed commitments from two of the top players in the state of Louisiana: 5-star WR Shelton Sampson out of Catholic High and 4-star QB Rickie Collins from Woodlawn High School. But what exactly is so important about those two commitments? Shelton Sampson is ranked the third-best player in the state of Louisiana and had offers from Alabama, Georgia, and Florida State (where his former Catholic High head coach Gabe Fertitta is now an analyst), but when asked why he picked LSU he simply said, "why wouldn't I want to play for LSU?" Rickie Collins committed to play for Purdue in October of last year. Less than two weeks ago he committed from the Boilermakers and Wednesday night made his decision to stay home and play for the Tigers. There were concerns about Brian Kelly's ability to recruit players in the state of Louisiana since he had very few ties in the state much less the southeast as a whole. But with two of the top players in LSU's backyard making their decision to stay home, can we admit that our concerns just might be gone? Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! The Seminoles are in the thick of recruiting season and tension is building towards who the future is for Mike Norvell at QB. But currently, that future is in question as it seems less likely that they will retain 2023 QB Chris Parson. They have also offered two other QBs for the 2023 class with Brock Glenn and Purdue commit Rickie Collins, they need to land at least one of the three and seemingly hope to bring in two. Beyond that, the Seminoles have made great strides along the offensive line with all the talent that OC/OL Coach Alex Atkins is bringing in. This team had 21 different offensive line combinations in 2021 and has done all that they can to make sure they have improved the line. Atkins helped bring in five offensive linemen to the 2022 class (more than any other position) along with four potential contributing linemen via the portal with Bless Harris, Dmitri Emmanuel, Kayden Lyles, and Jazston Turnetine. They have also tried to fix the lack of talent at the receiver position with impact transfers like Mycah Pittman, Johnny Wilson, and Winston Wright. But the question is will this talent be enough in a pivotal 2022 season for Mike Norvell? Norvell has been a good X's and O's coach without the results and given the pressure he is under for 2022, no matter the bad luck they may face it seems this is a tipping point for Mike Norvell's tenure at Florida State... Tomahawk Nation's Ben Meyerson is joined by Noles247's Brendan Sonnone to discuss this and much more. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Hello everyone, hope you had a great weekend -- this is Noles News Now, presented by Tomahawk Nation, giving you the latest in Florida State Seminoles athletics. The biggest news off the top -- FSU baseball firing Mike Martin Jr. after just three seasons with the team. In both of his postseason appearances, Martin failed to lead the Seminoles to secure hosting rights in regionals or take the team out of regional play. It's now the first time in 4 decades that a Martin won't be coaching FSU baseball -- so who are the likely targets? The number one name getting tossed around is Notre Dame head coach Link Jarrett. The former Seminole is on the top of every list as the most wanted for FSU's next head coach. Jarrett is currently in his third season as the Notre Dame Fighting Irish head coach and has his team in the College World Series after upsetting No. 1 overall seed Tennessee. He didn't downplay interest in the job when asked about it, but it'll surely take a big price tag to lure him down from South Bend -- or possibly keep him away from other programs. You can read a full breakdown of all the names that FSU will be targeting on TomahawkNation.com. Big news on the recruiting trail this weekend -- the Seminoles snagged a pair of 2023 commitments, one being JUCO defensive lineman Jaden Jones and the other being athlete Quindarrius Jones, who earned an offer from FSU following an impressive performance at last week's Elite Camp. Jaden projects to be a defensive end for the Seminoles. Rated a 3-star in high school, he started his college career at Hutchinson Community College in Montgomery, Alabama. Quindarrius reports no offers from other universities and is currently unranked as a prospect — though that by no means is reflective of his talent. From an early glance at his film, he appears to be a talented hand catcher, playing physically and with a penchant for high-pointing the ball. He appears to be a bit rawer defensively, but still showcases good hips and ball skills in the film he has available. They both join a 2023 recruiting class that currently ranks No. 26 in the country. If you want more info on how the 2023 class is shaping up, the Florida State of Recruiting pod is knocking out position previews, which started last week with a quarterback breakdown. Current sole QB commit Chris Parson made the trek out to Mississippi State for an official visit, while FSU welcomed both Brock Glenn and Rickie Collins to campus. A name to keep an eye on in the coming days is defensive lineman Ayobami Tifase, a high school prospect who plans to immediately enroll in college and take a redshirt year. He's looking to make a decision this week and be on campus as soon as possible. As far as involved schools, it's looking like an Arkansas FSU battle. Whipping around to track and field, Trey Cunningham wrote his name in the history books by running the second-fastest 110M hurdle in NCAA history. Earlier this year, he also took home the NCAA Indoor 60-meter championship with a 7.38 — the 11th-fastest time ever and the second-fastest in NCAA history. He wasn't the only Seminoles athlete who had an impressive performance -- we've got the full rundown on TomahawkNation.com. There's a lot going on with the quarterback position at Florida State. First up, Jordan Travis and the ‘Noles will have a decision to make in terms of him staying for 2023 — with another year of eligibility after 2022, he's got the chance to return to Tallahassee, but it is a little more complicated than that. Will FSU have a QB behind him that feels they need to play in 2023? How will the rest of the room play out? FSU has offered two 2023 QBs last week and that is making people wonder if Chris Parson's future is still with the Seminoles. Since the other two QBs got those offers, Parson has received offers from SMU and Mississippi State but it seems FSU wants two QBs from the ‘23 class. The team offered Brock Glenn and Rickie Collins on the same day last week signifying that they are still seriously considering more options for the next QB class. Collins is set for an official visit with the ‘Noles while Glenn has connections with the staff and will make a recruiting decision by the end of the month. All three high school QB prospects were also invited to the Elite 11 finals. Ben and Logan also talk about the biggest impact transfers from Jared Verse to Trey Benson and Mycah Pittman and how they will all fit in. As a bonus, they also debate which position FSU is most set in. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Alex Atkins has officially landed Charlotte offensive line transfer D'Mitri Emmanuel. Emmanuel is a highly-rated offensive guard that played for Atkins at Charlotte in 2019 before Atkins joined the Florida State staff under Mike Norvell. The guys break down how he fits in with other transfers Bless Harris, Kayden Lyles, and Dillan Gibbons, and what kind of impact having more depth at guard could mean for the development of youngsters Maurice Smith and Julian Armella. Next, the guys discuss Mike Norvell and QB coach Tony Tokarz offering two more QBs from the 2023 class in 3-star Brock Glenn and 4-star Rickie Collins. Glenn shined at a recent Elite 11 Regional earning an invite to the Elite 11 Finals in Los Angeles. Last year, there was a controversy when 2023 Seminoles commit QB Chris Parsons seemed to make it clear he did not want the staff to recruit other quarterbacks in his class.
