Welcome to The Patrick Madrid Show, where today he dives deep into the complexities of mixed marriages—a Catholic marrying outside the faith—and how the Apostolic Letter “Matrimonia Mixta” guides such unions. Patrick explores the importance of understanding and mutual respect, as well as the unique challenges these couples face. Listeners receive practical advice, from accessing the Bible in audio for the visually impaired to discernment about educational choices for Catholic families. Plus, he doesn't shy away from discussing Jesus' example of love yet intolerance for sin. LSU wide receiver Malik Nabers had a breakout year in 2022 leading LSU in receiving yards, and for those of you who watched LSU throttle the Purdue Boilermakers in the Citrus Bowl, he also led receivers in touchdown passes thrown. That stat is completely irrelevant to this conversation, but a fun tid bit nonetheless. Assuming Malik Nabers will be Jayden Daniels' favorite target for the second year in a row, who will we see in spring practice that emerges as the go-to guy behind Nabers? LSU returns Kyren Lace, Brian Thomas, and Chris Hilton from the 2022 season. Brian Thomas led that group in receiving yards, but could Lacy breakout after having a year of getting acclimated at LSU after a two year stint with ULL? Or will some of the younger receivers emerge as the biggest threat in the passing game? Two five star recruits, local Catholic High grad Shelton Sampson and Jalen Brown from Miami, are coming in the 2023 class. Will they come into LSU hungry to prove that they are ready for the next level? Or will the second most threatening receiver on the team not even be a WR after all? Mason Taylor was the third leading receiver on LSU's squad in 2022 behind Nabers and Kayshon Boutte. He developed week over week and became a certified threat and trusted receiver. Knowing what we know about Taylor's development and the steps he could take in year two combined with Brian Kelly and Mike Denbrock's affinity for tight ends, will Mason Taylor continue to be one of Daniels' top targets in his sophomore year? St. Louis Public Radio reporter Kate Grumke talks with St. Louis on the Air about the recent announcement regarding planned closures of two Catholic high schools at the end of the year.
The decision by the St. Louis Archdiocese to close two of its high schools in the City of St. Louis, Rosati Kain and St. Mary's has left school leaders in a state of shock. KMOX Religion Editor Fred Bodimer got reaction from Alexis Endsley-Puglisi at Rosati Kain and St. Mary's President Mike England.
Jesuit New Orleans head football coach Ryan Manale previews the defending state runner-up's upcoming season and also takes a deep dive into the NIL & Transfer Portal Culture (00:17:28) and how social media is affecting today's young people, particularly student-athletes who are trying to play ball at the collegiate level. This is a really solid, fresh perspective that will open your eyes to the craziness that is the money-making business of college football, the men who put the pads on every Saturday this fall, and the young men who aspire to do so. NOTE: Jesuit is ranked 4th in the state of Louisiana according to MaxPreps.com after losing 14-10 to Catholic High of Baton Rouge (ranked 1st in LA) in last year's 5A State Championship.
JOHN FOGLEMAN FROM CATHOLIC HIGH ON THE ZONE 8-29-22
In the last four days, LSU landed commitments from two of the top players in the state of Louisiana: 5-star WR Shelton Sampson out of Catholic High and 4-star QB Rickie Collins from Woodlawn High School. But what exactly is so important about those two commitments? Shelton Sampson is ranked the third-best player in the state of Louisiana and had offers from Alabama, Georgia, and Florida State (where his former Catholic High head coach Gabe Fertitta is now an analyst), but when asked why he picked LSU he simply said, "why wouldn't I want to play for LSU?" Rickie Collins committed to play for Purdue in October of last year. Less than two weeks ago he committed from the Boilermakers and Wednesday night made his decision to stay home and play for the Tigers. There were concerns about Brian Kelly's ability to recruit players in the state of Louisiana since he had very few ties in the state much less the southeast as a whole. But with two of the top players in LSU's backyard making their decision to stay home, can we admit that our concerns just might be gone? Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Retired Federal Judge Richard "Dicky" Haik, Sr. joined Discover Lafayette to discuss his distinguished career in law after serving on the bench for 32 years. Judge Haik grew up in New Iberia and proudly went to Catholic High of New Iberia along with other notables who have followed him, including retired Sheriff Mike Neustrom and UL-Lafayette's current football coach, Michael Desormeaux. He reflected on his admiration of the late Coach Bobby Banna who "was not only a coach but a teacher of life." Haik played football on scholarship at USL and after graduation in general business in 1972, went on to graduate from Loyola Law School in 1975 following in the footsteps of his older brother, Ted Haik. Judge Haik served in the Louisiana Army National Guard obtaining the rank of Captain and company commander for his unit. He served as a Captain in the US Army Reserves from 1980 to 1983. In 1984 at the age of 34, Judge Haik was elected as a state court judge (without opposition!) for the 16th Judicial District, covering Iberia, St. Martin, and St. Mary Parishes. In state court, his caseload included family and custody issues, as well as criminal sentencing, which was personally difficult for him to rule on and led to many sleepless nights. But that is part of the job, and he followed his dad's advice from childhood to "Listen to everyone's advice and do what you think is right." In 1991 at the age of 40, Judge Richard "Dicky" Haik was nominated by Pres. George H. W. Bush to serve on the federal bench for the U. S. District Court, Western District of Louisiana, where he served as chief judge of the court from 2002 to 2009. The Federal Court is a much stricter court system than state courts, and Haik says to young attorneys: "If you haven't tried a case in federal court, it's advisable to get counsel from someone who has before you try your case." He's been blessed with 42 talented law clerks and said five or six of his former clerks have gone on to serve as judges. Haik had a few high-profile cases including the Lafayette Parish Public School System's desegregation case where he ruled on April 24, 2006, that after 41 years, the school system was free from judicial oversight of its operations. "I did what I thought was right." There was also an unfortunate incident that happened not long after he was appointed to the federal bench. He was approached with an offer to make $2 million in exchange for ruling a certain way on a case worth much more than that. Speaking of this dark and scary time in his life, Haik says, "The fellow didn't know me that well." He went to the FBI and U. S. Attorney and personally assisted investigators in gathering evidence to obtain federal indictments against the individuals involved. "They wired up my camp at Cypremort Point with cameras and tape recorders, which went on for several months." Haik had around-the-clock guards to ensure his safety until the suspects were arrested. Two of the three went to jail. "I've also enjoyed good cases tried by good lawyers. The bottom line is I always enjoyed being on the bench. Federal court is more formal, very seldom did we allow people to continue cases, and you knew where you were going in federal court." Dicky Haik pictured with his family. Judge Haik retired in 2016 and now is of counsel with Morrow, Morrow, Ryan, Bassett & Haik, where he focuses on mediation matters. In that position, he has the pleasure of serving alongside his son, Richard T. Haik, Jr. Haik coaches his grandsons in flag football and is very involved with all of his kids and grandkids. A neighbor lets the team utilize a big, empty lot for team practices during the Spring and Fall. He's learned to be a bit more laid back when dealing with these littlest players as they progress. "To me, football was a life lesson and I learned the best from the best. I enjoy teaching sportsmanship." We thank Judge Richard "Dicky" Haik for his exemplary career in s...
Open - So I have begun to volunteer at a local Hospital which is also a trauma center. What separates a trauma center from a regular hospital? I look at it the same way you might look at the difference between a four star and a five star hotel. A five star hotel needs two dining rooms, one formal, and I believe 24 hour room service and concierge service… probably some other stuff. According to https://hospitalmedicaldirector.com/ which is a blog about hospital medical directors: A level 1 trauma center must have a trauma/general surgeon in the hospital 24-hours a day, along with an anesthesiologist and a full O-R staff available in the hospital 24-hours a day as well as a critical care physician 24-hours a day. There must also be immediate availability of an orthopedic surgeon, neurosurgeon, radiologist, plastic surgeon, and oral/maxillofacial surgeon. There must be > 1,200 trauma admissions per year. There are also requirements for the number of hours these surgeons and physicians must have each year. Finally, These centers must participate in research and have at least 20 publications per year. The main difference between a 1 one and a level 2 trauma center is primarily the lack of research and publication requirements. So, I have just barely started volunteering in one of California's 17 Level I trauma centers. So far, I go on only one day a week and I shadow one of the current 6 or so resident chaplains. There are some chaplains that are stationed on a particular floor as well, along with another set of chaplains that deal with palliative care, but that's another kettle of fish altogether. Is it inappropriate to refer to palliative care as a “kettle of fish”? I hope not, but you know there are always going to be people who are offended by something so… insert expletive. You may be thinking at this point… “what? Why? Why would a moron want to do something like this?” Great question. I have no idea. Actually I do… The thick of the pandemic. Lost a patient from Covid Case Investigation work. Not just a case number. I had to write an essay. So, knowing that i am NOT a religious person, how do I write an essay about being a chaplain, with no religious foundation? What is my faith tradition? Spiritual tradition: Catholic High school. 1 year at Catholic College. Studied Buddhism and attended service regularly in Los Angeles (Shin Buddhist) I definitely drank the kool-aid of Improvisational theater. Don't underestimate this. In fact, it probably gave me the most valuable tool in doing some of this work so far. CLOSE - In conclusion… I hope to be able to provide some insight, some reflections of my experiences and who knows maybe even a guest or two! I don't know how long I will be permitted to be a volunteer before they find out I'm a moron and a heathen, but so far it's been a very positive experience. Coming up in future Modern Moron episodes, I will be speaking to my college graduate who has a degree in art history, and we will be discussing a VERY interesting 2018 documentary called “The Price of Everything”. The film features interviews with people prominently involved in contemporary art and the market for it and it is fascinating. The title of the film comes from a quote from the 1892 Oscar Wilde play “Lady Windermere's Fan”. The quote is delivered in the film by art collector Stefan Edlis: "There are a lot of people who know the price of everything and the value of nothing". Chew on that for a while, right? Also, in line with The Modern Moron remaining on the cutting edge of technology and pop culture, I just bought an air fryer and I simply must tell you about my favorite dishes. Until next time, thank you for listening to The Modern Moron, please forward this episode to someone you think would like it, or to someone you think would hate it as a joke. Thanks.

While the COVID-19 outbreak threw a wrench into the end of the school year, Catholic High School for Boys remains committed to the principles that have made it a pinnacle of education in central Arkansas. “We knew intrinsically and uniquely that Catholic High is about more than just academics,” said Catholic High School principal Steve Straessle. “The academic delivery is vital without question, but Catholic High School is more than that.” Straessle shared more with host Natalie Ghidotti on the latest episode of The Ghidotti Podcast, including his working relationship with the Little Rock School District, the role virtual learning could play in the future and Catholic High School's plans for graduation and other senior traditions.
All I had to do was love them. That observation pretty much sums up Diane O’Connell’s perspective on how she was able to bond with so many kids who passed through the halls of Stamford/Trinity Catholic High School. In this interview you will hear about how walking into the main office as a parent, wearing nothing but a bathing suit and cover up (and apparently some pearls), led to Diane landing her dream job as the school’s main office secretary. You will learn that she’s got some serious pull when it comes to finding parking during a key UCONN basketball game and why Thanksgiving is the first of many “happiest days of the year” for her. Lastly, you will hear some words of reassurance directed towards the class of 2020 from the heart and soul of Catholic High. This episode of Uncorking a Story is brought to you by Mike Carlon’s novel Motel California, which can be purchased at Amazon.com or wherever books are sold online. Enjoy the show.

We hear a lot on this show from entrepreneurs — some successful, some just starting out— about what they do and what makes them tick. On this edition of Out to Lunch we turn our attention to a whole new breed of business people: high school entrepreneurs. Deborah Sternberg is founder and chairperson of the Baton Rouge affiliate of a nationwide organization called Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA). Deborah founded the local chapter of YEA in 2018, after more than a decade as President of her family's business, Starmount Life Insurance and in just two years, the academy has already created some remarkable successes. YEA partners with LSU's E.J. Ourso College of Business to train its students and help them launch companies by generating business ideas tied to their interests, writing business plans, filing their business with the Louisiana Secretary of State's Office and pitching to a shark-take like investor panel for seed funding. Channing Hall, is a junior at Baton Rouge Magnet High School, where she is a member of the award-winning debate team. Channing is also involved in theater, and is the founder of Backstage, a theater management app she designed that allows directors to better communicate with their cast and crew. The tool is especially useful for small and community theaters that might need a little help with organization. Trevor Turner is a junior at Catholic High. Trevor is the founder of Dormenity - a web-based real-world service that takes away the stress of college move-in day by combining storage and delivery. Dormenity houses students' stuff and moves it to and from their dorm rooms each semester, based on orders they place on line. Out to Lunch Baton Rouge is recorded over lunch at Mansurs on the Boulevard in Baton Rouge. You can find photos from this show, and much more here. By now, you've probably seen this picture... ...and heard about Gillette's new ad, The Best Men Can Be Maybe you've even heard about the American Psychological Association's Guidelines for Psychological Practice with Boys and Men, which some applaud and some condemn. (Two recent headlines: "Toxic Masculinity is Under Attack. And That's Fine," from a left-leaning website, and "The American Psychological Association Has Made Choosing a Therapist Easy," from a right-leaning site.) Discussion of these videos, pictures and guidelines have dominated social media recently -- for better and for worse. For better: People are publicly discussing masculinity and the expectations placed on boys and men. For worse: Many people are jumping to conclusions without looking at the actual source material. In many corners, "discussion" has devolved into shouting. In this episode, Jen & Janet dive in & discuss: The APA Guidelines for Psychological Practice with Boys and Men The Gillette ad, The Best Men Can Be The encounter between the boys of Covington High School, tribal elder Nathan Phillips and the Black Hebrew Israelites Note: On 1/21/19, Twitter suspended an account which spread the initial 1-minute video of the encounter in DC after realizing that the account was likely part of a network of anonymous accounts that were working to amplify the video. Soon after that initial, short video sparked outrage, a longer, nearly 2-hour video of the encounter was posted on YouTube to an account called "John Duncan." As of 1/23/19, no one seems to know who recorded or posted the video. One journalist Jen spoke with said, "We all have serious questions about the origins of the vids and related content and the fact that finding a human attached to any of it proves elusive." When I was 21 years old I thought I knew it all and that my parents knew absolutely nothing. By the time I turned 22 and was working in my first job with real bills to pay, I was amazed at how much my parents learned in just 12 short months. Since becoming an adult and starting a family, my appreciation for the sacrifices they made for me has only grown. One such sacrifice was giving me a Catholic education; while I did not appreciate it at the time, I have come to understand that the foundation such an education provides has made me every bit of who I am today. I was fortunate to have been taught by many wonderful teachers during my lifetime but there is one high school teacher of mine who stands out for many reasons and his name is Ernie Bourcier; otherwise known as Mr. B. At 70 years young, Mr. B. remains a full time teacher at Trinity Catholic High School where he has taught for the past 46 years. This amazes me to no end because I have been unable to sit still in a job for more than 5 years at a clip and he has been in the same place for over four and a half decades. I wanted to interview Ernie to understand what it is about Catholic High that encourages teachers to stay so long as he is not the only one with decades of experience at the school. In short, he views teaching as a true vocation; he really wants to see students become the best they can be and the community around the school has become his family. "You are married to this school, Ernie," a former librarian would remind him. To really understand Ernie, you have to understand his upbringing in New Bedford, MA. His family was a religious one and religion had a very profound impact on his life. Listen to this interview and you will hear about how boxing gloves were used in place of detentions, the profound impact that Ernie's sister had on his own life, and Ernie's own experiences with religious life. Former students will recognize the story about the chickens! Listen more and you will come to understand what it was like being a rookie teacher in 1968 and why, 46 years later, Mr. B. remains faithfully devoted to his bride; Trinity Catholic High School. I encourage you to listen to this interview up until the very end to learn more about the local hero we have in Ernie Bourcier. Like Columbo, there's just one more thing. I ask that you take the time in the near future to think about a teacher who has had an impact on your life. Find some way to share your appreciation with them. We all know that our teachers are not compensated based on what they are truly worth so take a minute to let them know how much they are valued.
