Chargers Finalize Coaching Staff, Add Young Minds To NFL

The Chargers have finalized their coaching staff for the 2023 season with several changes, additions, and promotions. Derek Ainsley has been promoted to defensive coordinator, Tom Donal to passing game coordinator and secondary coach, Jeff Howard to linebacker coach, and Kellen Moore to offensive coordinator. This is the latest development in the Chargers' coaching staff before the draft. Each coach has experience in the respective field and the Chargers are confident in their new staff for the upcoming season. The conversation is about the recent hiring of assistant coaches for a football team. Will Harris was hired a month ago and will be the Assistant Secondary Coach. He previously worked at Georgia Southern University, where his defensive unit ranked in the top 10 of Red Zone defense. Phil Shia, Mike Hestan and John Timo have also been hired as Assistant Coaches. The addition of Harris is seen as a great opportunity for him to move from the college side to the NFL side. The new coaches will all work together with Tom Donatello to help the team improve. Derek Ainsley recently made the move from the University of Washington to Georgia Southern University. Ainsley's journey started with Snoop Dogg's Youth Football League, and he has been a part of teams such as Northwestern, Oklahoma State, Dixie College, San Jose State, and the University of Southern California. At USC, he was part of four Rose Bowls, including the 2005 National Championship game. He has also spent time with the Seahawks and the Canadian Football League. SCHA has also been added to the coaching team. He has spent the last three seasons directing the offense at Hutchinson Community College, and in 2021 they had a rush average of 273 yards per game. He has also been the offensive line coach at Texas A&M Kingsville, and was part of Rams' victory in the 2008 New Mexico Bowl. With both Ainsley and SCHA on board, the team hopes to build a high-powered offense led by Kellen Moore. Harris is pleased with the success of his cornerback coach, Mike Hek, who has been promoted to work with the defensive side of the ball as a front seven specialist. John Timmy, who is from the University of Washington, has been with the team for a few years and has been promoted to assistant defensive line coach. Brandon Staley is the defensive coordinator and there are now 10 people working on the defense, as well as a lot of assistants and quality control coaches working on the offense. Harris believes that these promotions and additions to the coaching staff will help to ensure that the team is successful and that young minds are given an opportunity to contribute. Please Bear with Me is back after a few weeks off to cover all the news surrounding the Baylor Bears. Coaching switch ups, decommits, commits, transfer portal news, and of course a preview of the Air Force game are all on the table this episode. Travis begins the episode congratulating the Bears who were awarded All Big 12 Team honors. Dillon Doyle was the story of this year's honorees making both the 2nd team defensive and offensive teams. Congratulations Dillon! Then Travis will talk about the release of Defensive Coordinator Ron Roberts and Safeties/Special Teams coach Ronnie Wheat. He'll discuss who's at the top of his list to replace Coach Roberts. Then Bears Illustrated recruiting analyst Jordan Scruggs joins Please Bear with Me. He'll discuss the recent interest from Oregon in Austin Novasod and the decommitments from the Bear's recruiting class. Jordan will react to the transfer portal news and is sure Baylor will lose a few more following the bowl game. Baylor did pick up 2 transfer portal commits in OL Campbell Barrington from BYU and Jerrell Boykins DT from Hutchinson Community College. Jordan will end with his thoughts on the changing landscape of NIL, recruiting, and the transfer portal. He gives his take on if recruiting classes will lose importance and value moving forward with the transfer portal. Finally, Travis gets you ready for the Bears final matchup of the season vs Air Force. Air Force has a stout defense and the staple of their offense is the triple option which has shown the ability to give other team's fits. It'll be important for Baylor to play physical and do their 1/11th on defense, but it might be just what the Bears need heading into next season. It's going to be a freezing day in Fort Worth so bundle up and Sic em Bears!  JOIN THE BANTER: Follow @PleaseBearW_Me on Twitter and Please Bear With Me on Facebook. Hello everyone, hope you had a great weekend -- this is Noles News Now, presented by Tomahawk Nation, giving you the latest in Florida State Seminoles athletics. The biggest news off the top -- FSU baseball firing Mike Martin Jr. after just three seasons with the team. In both of his postseason appearances, Martin failed to lead the Seminoles to secure hosting rights in regionals or take the team out of regional play. It's now the first time in 4 decades that a Martin won't be coaching FSU baseball -- so who are the likely targets? The number one name getting tossed around is Notre Dame head coach Link Jarrett. The former Seminole is on the top of every list as the most wanted for FSU's next head coach. Jarrett is currently in his third season as the Notre Dame Fighting Irish head coach and has his team in the College World Series after upsetting No. 1 overall seed Tennessee. He didn't downplay interest in the job when asked about it, but it'll surely take a big price tag to lure him down from South Bend -- or possibly keep him away from other programs. You can read a full breakdown of all the names that FSU will be targeting on TomahawkNation.com. Big news on the recruiting trail this weekend -- the Seminoles snagged a pair of 2023 commitments, one being JUCO defensive lineman Jaden Jones and the other being athlete Quindarrius Jones, who earned an offer from FSU following an impressive performance at last week's Elite Camp. Jaden projects to be a defensive end for the Seminoles. Rated a 3-star in high school, he started his college career at Hutchinson Community College in Montgomery, Alabama. Quindarrius reports no offers from other universities and is currently unranked as a prospect — though that by no means is reflective of his talent. From an early glance at his film, he appears to be a talented hand catcher, playing physically and with a penchant for high-pointing the ball. He appears to be a bit rawer defensively, but still showcases good hips and ball skills in the film he has available. They both join a 2023 recruiting class that currently ranks No. 26 in the country. If you want more info on how the 2023 class is shaping up, the Florida State of Recruiting pod is knocking out position previews, which started last week with a quarterback breakdown. Current sole QB commit Chris Parson made the trek out to Mississippi State for an official visit, while FSU welcomed both Brock Glenn and Rickie Collins to campus. A name to keep an eye on in the coming days is defensive lineman Ayobami Tifase, a high school prospect who plans to immediately enroll in college and take a redshirt year. He's looking to make a decision this week and be on campus as soon as possible. As far as involved schools, it's looking like an Arkansas FSU battle. Whipping around to track and field, Trey Cunningham wrote his name in the history books by running the second-fastest 110M hurdle in NCAA history. Earlier this year, he also took home the NCAA Indoor 60-meter championship with a 7.38 — the 11th-fastest time ever and the second-fastest in NCAA history. He wasn't the only Seminoles athlete who had an impressive performance -- we've got the full rundown on TomahawkNation.com. There we've been pumping out plenty of content over the last few days -- a basketball offseason breakdown from our very own Matt Minnick is live, as well as schedule previews, player profiles, the aforementioned FSU baseball coaching hot board -- you name it. This week on Inside the Headset, we are featuring University of Buffalo Defensive Line Coach, Cedric Douglas. In this episode, Coach Douglas details how he identifies talent while recruiting football players, highlights the benefits of tailoring your coaching style to the type of player you are coaching, and shares what it means to play with a “samurai” mindset. Cedric Douglas is in his second season as Buffalos defensive line coach. Coach Douglas led an aggressive defensive line in 2021. UB ranked second in the Mid-American Conference in sacks per game (3.1). In Buffalo's win over Akron, the Bulls had a program-record 11 sacks, including a school-record 3.5 sacks by defensive end Kyler Laing. Prior to coming to Buffalo, Douglas spent two seasons as defensive line coach at Massachusetts. While at UMASS, Douglas' defensive line led unit emerged as a strong point for the Minutemen. Prior to UMASS, Douglas helped Arkansas State reach back-to-back bowl games in 2017 and 2018, during which he was a graduate assistant working with the defensive line. His efforts in guiding the defensive line led to a pair of major awards for Red Wolves standouts as Ja'Von Rolland-Jones won 2017 Sun Belt Player of the Year and Ronheen Bingham followed as the 2018 Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Year. Both also won All-Sun Belt First Team during their respective seasons. Douglas spent 2016 as defensive line coach and academic liaison at Hutchinson Community College in Kansas. During his lone season at Hutchinson, the Blue Dragons defense ranked No. 12 in the nation in scoring defense, No. 10 in total defense and No. 13 in rushing defense. Douglas has also had coaching stops at Coffeyville Community College in Kansas, Ave Maria University in Florida and Lincoln High School. This edition of the Life of Fitz podcast features host Tim Fitzgerald calling former receiver/quarterback Kody Cook in Hutchinson, Kansas. Cook is now the wide receivers coach at his alma mater Hutchinson Community College, and after playing a spring season this year due to COVID-19, the Blue Dragons captured the national title. Before going to Hutch and eventually Kansas State, Cook was the quarterback at Louisburg (Kan.) High, a town of fewer than 5,000 people just south over the Kansas City metro area. Cook played both receiver and QB at Hutch and after coming to K-State and redshirting in 2013, he ended up doing the exact same thing in Manhattan, ending his college football career by starting at quarterback for the Wildcats in the 2015 Liberty Bowl versus Arkansas. Now back in Hutch, Kody and his wife Kylie, the daughter of K-State football legend Michael Smith, are preparing for their life adventure in football coaching. *** Tim Fitzgerald is a sports journalist who writes, does TV, radio and is a long-time podcaster. He has served as publisher of GoPowercat.com, a website that focuses on Kansas State sports, for more than 20 years. Fitz also has stage 4 prostate cancer, so during the initial stages of the pandemic, his doctors have advised him to stay home and lay low. The Tennessee football program has once again found themselves a playmaker from the outside. The Vols added JUCO CB Ro Torrence on Monday night. The 6-foot-3, 195 pound defensive back comes to Knoxville from Hutchinson Community College, in Kansas. Torrence is from Bessemer, Alabama, and played at Bessemer City High School. I spoke with Ro Torrence tonight about his decision to pick the Vols and his conversations with the coaching staff. Also, we discussed him playing for a National Title in a few weeks. Since the JUCO football was postponed until the spring, Torrence recorded 20 tackles, six PBU’s and 3 tackles for loss in seven games played this season. It should also be noted that one of his former teammates is current Tennessee running back Tiyon Evans. Torrence will be playing in the 2021 JUCO National Championship game on June 5th. He will arrive at Tennessee a bit later than other incoming transfers. Jarrod Sanders Jr., one of his coaches at Hutchinson, had this to say about his ability. “He’s an extra long corner and can run very well. He’s very physical at the line in press and sets the edge of the defense, like he’s a linebacker. He’s strong in the weight room and continues to make jumps. In January he was 188 pounds and he’s 200 now, so that speaks for itself. He’s smart and always trying to learn more. Sky’s the limit for that kid, he’s one of the best I’ve seen.” High praise for the cornerback who was just wrapping up his time in the JUCO ranks. He took care of business and landed at a Power-5 school. Talking with folks about Torrence, they seem to really like his ability to attack from different areas. His height and speed will be a nice treat for defensive backs coach Willie Martinez, who he talked to a lot during this process. The hope is that Torrence can come in and pickup the defense so that he can contribute early one. Knowing the Vols needed help at the position, especially with depth, only benefits the team even more, thanks to Torrence. Junior college football is the place where urban legends are born. Some of the best—past and present—went to a JUCO, including  guys like Aaron Rodgers, Warren Moon and Cam Newton. And while JUCO football was brought more into the mainstream by the Netflix series “Last Chance U,” it isn't exactly glamorous. Just ask new Arkansas linebackers coach Rion Rhoades. Rhoades spent the past 14 seasons as a JUCO head coach, including 13 years at Hutchinson Community College. He's seen it all. But how does a lifelong JUCO coach fit in at Arkansas, where he's getting his first taste of the Power 5 level? And how have the fires he's dealt with at the JUCO level prepared him for what he calls a dream job?

On this edition of KOGpod: (02:45) The top story is the 4 year, 85 million dollar contract that defensive lineman Chris Jones has signed with the Kansas City Chiefs. What does this signing say about the culture in KC. What does this mean for other top tier players in the next couple of years when they are up for a new contract? How does this impact the Chiefs on and off the field for years to come? The guys discuss. (26:21) With the news that the Washington NFL team will be retiring their nickname "Redskins", Tommy, Weston and Blake discuss what this means for the Kansas City Chiefs and their nickname and traditions. They also discuss what will end up happening to Wichita North High School, also nicknamed the "Redskins". (46:23) A rivalry renewed as Kansas State University and Wichita State University have signed a contract for their men's basketball programs to play a 4 year series. The guys discuss the benefits for both programs to participate in this, plus is the University of Kansas now feeling more pressure to sign a deal to play WSU in the future now that KSU has? (1:03:11) Our #WichitaWhiparound discusses how the NJCAA has decided to move all fall sports, including football to the spring. This include Wichita area juco programs like Butler Community College, Hutchinson Community College and more. Could this be the next domino to drop before bigger schools make the same change? Time will tell. (1:07:58) Wrapping up the show with the #FinallyFunny, and it focuses on Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce playing pranks on each other all weekend long at the American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament at Lake Tahoe. On October 4th, the justices on the Kansas Supreme Court traveled to Hutchinson, a small town in central Kansas. The seven men and women donned their black robes and took the bench in a community college auditorium to hear oral arguments in upcoming cases. This is pretty much the extent of campaigning the justices are allowed to do and for more than 50 years this has been enough. But this year, many people in Kansas say they are disillusioned by several rulings the justices on Kansas’ highest court have made and now, they want to boot four of the five justices on the ballot, from the bench. Never before has a sitting justice on the Kansas Supreme Court not won a retention election. But as we all bear witness, 2016 is a different sort of election year. In Part 4 of our A Fair Fight for a Fair Court series, Life of the Law reporter Ashley Cleek takes us to Kansas for COURTING VOTERS.
