If you've been crunching those numbers lately trying to figure out how you've been spending your money you might have come to the realization you need to cut some expenses.  With a quick review and a few simple hacks you can cut back on unnecessary spending and free up some cash.  Links: Resources and statistics mentioned in this tip: Interesting coffee facts Stats on the cost of dining out Forbes survey results on the cost of streaming services RunRepeat survey results for the cost of gym memberships Find how much handyman and home jobs on AllBetter app might cost you Learn how much you could save shopping secondhand or used items  Follow our Facebook, Instagram and Twitter pages! Learn more about Triangle Credit Union Transcript: Welcome to Money Tip Tuesday from the Making Money Personal podcast.   Saving even a little bit of money these days can make a world of a difference for your finances.   Here are a few places you can look to start if you're ready to cut back on your spending.    Number 1: Consider cutting out that regular cup of coffee.   If you're used to buying your daily cup of joe, you may be spending more than you realize.   As of 2023, the average cup of coffee in the US costs $3.28. If you're a regular drinker, that means you spend roughly $10 – $16 a week depending on how often you purchase your coffee. And that doesn't even include tip.   If you're buying your morning brew 3 times a week that means you'll be spending roughly $520 a year on coffee. If you buy one every day of the week, then you're spending around $832 a year on your coffee.   If you don't like the thought of spending half a grand to almost a grand on coffee a year, then there's an easy fix for you. Simply cut back buy buying less frequently or make your own coffee at home.    A cup of homemade coffee can cost between 18 - 27 cents. That's a big difference from buying one from your favorite coffee shop.     Number 2: Dial back on dining out. This one is pretty obvious. Many of us spend more than we realize on dining out.  According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average American dines out 5.9 times per week and the average household spends roughly $3,500 a year on it. That's around $291 a month.   Are you comfortable affording that?  If that seems like too much for you to afford, then it's time to take a closer look at how much you're spending on food you don't cook at home.  If you're not ready to cut it out entirely, because it provides some relief from a hard day's work, try cutting back on the number of times you go out, choosing cheaper establishments, or cutting out expensive options when you do go out like alcoholic drinks, apps or desserts.     Number 3: Cut back on streaming services, or other subscriptions.  If you're like me, you're probably paying for more than one streaming service every month. According to a 2023 Forbes survey, the average person is subscribed to 2.8 streaming services with some subscribing to five services at a given time.   The survey also showed that the average person spends $39 a month on streaming services which can add up to $486 a year and it also showed that 47% of people are paying for streaming services that go unused.  If you find you're paying too much simply cancel some and stick with the one you like the most or cancel all and opt for free TV instead. You'll likely have to endure commercials, but that can be a small price to pay for the money you'll save over time.      Number 4: Lose your unused gym or fitness memberships.   Gym memberships can be costly.  According to a 2021 survey done by RunRepeat, the average cost of a gym membership is around $37.71 a month. That comes to about $452 a year.   The saddest part of this is that most people don't end up using the membership as often as they planned, with many not using it at all. Even if you're only paying $10 a month fee, it's still a waste.   Pay attention to how much you're dishing out for your fitness and if you find you're one of those people paying for something you're not using, cancel your membership and opt for other, cheaper ways of training instead.   Walking or running outside, getting involved in recreational activities, even free YouTube videos are great ways of keeping up with your fitness goals without paying for an unused membership.     Number 5: Learn how to DIY things. In many cases, it's cheaper to do a job yourself than to pay someone else to do it for you.  Things like learning how to change your own oil, repair drywall, change out light fixtures or unclog a sink can save you a lot of money when you take a little time and effort to do it yourself.  Allbetter app, an app for handyman and other services, lists some of those basic jobs starting at $100. If you're up for the task and want to save a little bit of money, look up how to do the job or repair on YouTube or other websites to take it on yourself. You could even ask a friend or family member to guide you if they have experience in home repair.   If you're currently paying for cleaning services you can cut back by budgeting some of your time to handle those chores yourself.  Taking over some of those basic home projects on your own instead of paying someone else to do it for you can save you hundreds of dollars a year.     Number 6: Shop for secondhand items.   For certain things secondhand and gently used items can be just as good as new but with a lower price tag.  Some of the best items to buy used are gym equipment, hand tools, and furniture.   For items like these buying used can save you around 25% off the retail price. Try searching places like Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist if you're hunting for a bargain on used items.  Another favorite for many people is to buy used clothing at retail thrift shops or online apps like Poshmark and others.   If you're a savvy recommerce shopper you can save around $150 a month which adds up over time to around $1,760 a year on average.   Be careful when buying from secondhand sellers to make sure you're not getting scammed and if you're looking at something electric or mechanical, remember to test it before buying.    To wrap up, finding ways to cut costs may not be too difficult when you know where to look. Stay aware of your expenses, budget and adjust your lifestyle accordingly because cutting back on the small stuff can save you more than you realize in the long run.  To quote Ben Franklin: "Small expenses add up over time and can slowly sink our money into the abyss. The worst part, we typically won't know until it's too late."   If there are any other tips or topics, you'd like us to cover, let us know at tcupodcast@trianglecu.org.  Like and follow our Making Money Personal FB and IG page and look for our sponsor, Triangle Credit Union on social media to share your thoughts.   Thanks for listening to today's Money Tip Tuesday and be sure to check out our other tips and episodes on the Making Money Personal podcast.   Have a great day!

Let's start this episode off with a few numbers, courtesy of the excellent and meticulous Nicholas Rizzo at the website RunRepeat.com. In 2019, the fitness industry was valued at $159 billion - yes, billion with a B. Which, at the time, was the most it had ever been valued at. When the pandemic hit in 2020, the industry then experienced a 32% decline - not surprising, but still a painful number. Now, as I write this on February 16, 2022, the fitness industry's valuation seems to be almost back to pre-pandemic levels. Online/digital fitness, fitness apps, fitness equipment, and fitness trackers all experienced significant growth in the pandemic. By 2028, the online/digital fitness industry is projected to have the highest growth rate of 33.10% per year. The classic brick and mortar gym, on the other hand, is predicted to grow much more slowly, at a rate of around 7% per year. Now, let's dig into what aSweatLife's own research has shown over the past few years. (And as a side note, I highly recommend diving into RunRepeat's research yourself - it's fascinating and well worth your time, we'll link to it in the show notes). In 2018, respondents to our annual State of Fitness survey spent an average of $125 per month, give or take a few cents, on fitness. That number has consistently declined year-over-year - and then when the pandemic hit, that average dropped to $45 per month. That's around a 64% drop in monthly fitness spend in our audience, which is a much steeper decline than what RunRepeat's numbers showed about the industry as a whole. In the fall of 2021, monthly fitness spend creeped back up to $51 - but that's still dramatically lower than the 2018 to 2020 years. (Of course, the necessary caveats here are: we know our audience is fitness obsessed, and we know they're mostly millennial women in urban areas, all of which affect their access and willingness to spend or save on fitness.)As they say - you've got to follow the money. By tracking consumer spending on fitness, we can build theories about how that spend reflects the value our society places on physical activity. And the way our audience spends money on fitness is something we love to geek out on at aSweatLife - in fact, I'll refer you to several in-depth pieces Jeana has written over the years about the business of fitness, including some of her best work from when ClassPass ditched their unlimited model. And because this is a topic we find so fascinating, we pulled in the big guns: Jason Kelly, Chief Correspondent at Bloomberg Quicktake and the Author of Sweat Equity: Inside the New Economy of Mind and Body, a portrait of the booming fitness economy. Jason understands the world of private equity and public offerings, and he keeps a close pulse on how the fitness industry's money moves, so to speak. In this episode, you'll hear Jason and I talk about how the community aspect of fitness factors into making fitness a compelling investment, the successes of both high-cost and low-cost fitness businesses, and the business of celebrity fitness instructors. And stay tuned for a bonus episode with Jason dropping later this week: Our original episode was recorded on February 3, and as you'll hear, we spent a good chunk of time talking about Peloton as a pandemic fitness darling. Then, I went on vacation and all hell broke loose at Peloton. Jason was kind enough to jump back on the mic with me on February 16, a week before the day this episode drops, so we could process together what the heck is happening at Peloton and what that says about the broader state of fitness. Look for that in your feed in the next couple of days.Links and resourcesFind Jason on Twitter hereWatchJason on Bloomberg's QuickTake seriesJeana and I both loved Jason's book, Sweat Equity: Inside the New Economy of Mind and BodyJason on Bloomberg Quicktake in June of 2021 on How the Pandemic Changed the Fitness IndustryJeana's extensive writing for aSweatLife on the business of fitness: Should You Keep Paying for ClassPass? and Flywheel Just Got Acquired – Here's What That MeansFitness industry research from RunRepeat and aSweatLife

Runrepeat.com, the world’s largest online, athletic shoe review company, as noted on its site, surveyed 3961 current runners to understand how many of those runners began their first steps to fitness during the Covid-19 pandemic. It appears that 28.76 % of the current runners were motivated to strap on their running shoes and head out during the pandemic. This result compares to doing outdoor activities, as the top trend in 2020 and in 2021—consisting of running, hiking, walking, cycling, and any other form of outdoor workouts, exercises, or training. Exercising outdoors, notes the website, “was voted the best way to stay fit in 2021 by 59.1% of active adults, increasing 14.6% from the start of 2020.”It was also determined that 19.82% of the novice runners were less likely to participate races in-person over the following 12 months—an assumed pandemic-related fear of crowds. “Motives for running are changing—physical health is the primary motivation for 72% of new-pandemic runners, up 18.03% from runners who began running before the pandemic,” according to the website. The survey noted the following data points: 34.27% less likely to run for competition or achievement, 31.44% less likely to run for social interaction, 14.81% less likely to run for mental or emotional health, 3.00% less likely to run for their confidence or self-esteem.The study investigators concluded that, “there has been a significant boom in running during the pandemic. The situation and circumstances that these people have taken up running are drastically different than their pre-pandemic counterparts.”Another trend that has grown in popularity is exercising at home – spawned by the pandemic world-wide lockdowns. Notes the survey, “a lot of people made the decision to start investing in at-home gym equipment or make use of the fitness equipment they already had”—with the percentage of active adults seeing at-home fitness equipment, as the best way to stay fit increased by 49.6%, making it the fastest growing trend of 2021. In the US, this trend has grown explosively by 218.3%.The pandemic took a hit on sports participation – with the percentage of active adults relying on sports to stay fit decreasing by 25.2% over the year, noting only 6.0% still seeing it as their best option for 2021. Female sports participation saw a decrease in this trend—down 53.0%—which was more than double that for men, who were down by 23.8%.Another characteristic change, resulting from the pandemic, was the positive impact of online fitness content, courses, classes, and subscriptions. “The trend of online fitness exploded in America, with 134.7% more active American adults switching to this new trend to reach their fitness goals, as the pandemic continues into 2021,” noted the survey. Why Fort Collins is a great town for both trail and road runners. What makes Fort Collins perfect for adventurers. The best time of year to visit Fort Collins, Colorado. The best seasons for each outdoor activity, including biking, rafting, kayaking, backpacking, camping, climbing, hiking, and boating. The two best places to stay in Fort Collins, Colorado. A part of Fort Collins with a Disney claim to fame. The best diner in Fort Collins with world-famous cinnamon rolls. The best time of year (and time of day) for whitewater rafting in Fort Collins. A nearby small town with stunning mountain biking. The two best hikes in Fort Collins, Colorado. A tip for a less crowded way to hike to the top of Horsetooth Rock. Why Fort Collins is built for biking. A unique local state park. The best breweries, dinner spots with patios, and nightlife spots in Fort Collins, Colorado. The two best destinations for Instagram photos. One popular local destination you should avoid if crowded, and where you should go instead. Quotables "Well, there’s a lot of things Fort Collins has going for itself. First off, it’s a really cool hip little town. The university here is 25 – 30,000 students. So there’s this fun nightlife vibe going on that bigger college towns have. We have really good weather here. The weather in Fort Collins is just fantastic all year round. Even now, it’s January, it’s in the fifties, sunny, and in the fifties. And so you can run, you can mountain bike, you can climb mostly year-round. If you’re into golf, you can golf year-round. There’s a lot of outdoor activities that you can do throughout the year that you can’t do in a lot of other mountain west locations. And then on top of that, it’s just really close to a lot of really great things. We’re about an hour north of Denver. So the Denver crowds tend to stay away from Northern Colorado. And so we kind of have our forests and our trails and our mountains to ourselves up here. And within an hour of town, you can be back-country skiing. You can be whitewater rafting, mountain biking, backpacking, rock climbing. I mean, There’s so much stuff to do right in town, but also within an hour that a lot of the crowds just kind of stay away from, which makes this place a real gem" "In Fort Collins, you can go out on a Saturday afternoon for a mountain bike ride on one of our local, popular trails and maybe pass ten to fifteen other people. Whereas in Denver, you might pass a thousand people on the local mountain bike trails. So, you know, although there are people out recreating, it is not the crowds like you see down south of here which is really, really special, I think for the people that live here" "I think there’s 220 miles of bike path and bike lane and Fort Collins. So, basically, every street has a bike lane that’s like three or four feet wide. But there’s also a lot of dedicated bike paths that go through the parks, go down along the railways, that are off the streets and totally bike-friendly… Everyone rides their bikes everywhere because it’s so easy" "So the big adventure that you got to do after you’ve played outside in Fort Collins is head back into town, clean up, and get on some bikes … and you head into town, and we’ve got, I think we’ve got 30 or 40 breweries in town … you can ride your bike from brewery to brewery, to distillery, to dispensary, if that’s your thing. So there’s all sorts of fun things to do on bikes. Fort Collins is very patio oriented in the summer. Everyone is sitting outside. Everyone is enjoying the sunshine. And enjoying a good beer after a long day on the mountains" "What’s cool about Fort Collins is there’s enough different breweries that you can find very different styles of beer. If you want to get on your bike and riding the rain, it’s actually a really fun experience. So what if you get wet? It’s going to stop raining. That’s the good thing about Colorado. You know, if you get stuck in a rainstorm, it’s only gonna last a little while, and then you’ll dry out at the next brewery. My theory is, that’s the time to be out there. It’s fun to be out in the rain" "I mean, in any given day, basically winter or summer, you can trail run, you can mountain bike, you can hike, you can rock climb, you can golf, you can hunt, you can fish, you can raft, and you can kayak. I mean, there’s a lot of opportunity here if you’re a thrill-seeker or you love the outdoors. It’s got a little bit of everything. And we’re just far enough away from the big city that it’s not overrun yet. Also, the downtown area’s got great nightlife, and I think that that’s something that maybe falls away in some of the mountain towns. And we’re not in the mountains, but we’re tucked right up against them. And so, you know, there’s a lot to do here. In this episode we discuss their landmark report, The State of Ultra Running 2020, the first report of its kind, the inspiration for it, the design and methodology, and most interestingly, the results. It is based on analyzing 5,010,730 results from 15,451 ultra-running events over the past 23 years. Just remarkable. Explore the trends in ultra-running over the last 23 years, analyzing 5,010,730 results from 15,451 ultra-running events: Female ultra-runners are faster than male ultra-runners at distances over 195 miles. There have never been more ultra-runners. Women are as fast as men in long-distance ultras. The longer the distance the shorter the gender pace gap. There have never been more women in ultrarunning. Ultra runners have never been slower across distance, gender and age group. Runners improve their pace in their first 20 races, and then their pace stabilizes. The fastest ultra-running nations are South Africa, Sweden, and Germany. A record amount of people travel abroad for ultra-running events. Runners in the longer distances have a better pace than the runners in the shorter distances for each age group. All age groups have a similar pace, around 14:40 min/mile. The average age of ultra-runners has decreased.

It's just SHOES... why is this so complicated? You would think buying a pair of running shoes is as easy as finding your size, making sure you like how they look, and paying for them... right? Well, sadly, that has not been my experience. On Episode 67 of the podcast, though... I chat with a man who wants to make it nice and easy to find the shoe that's best for you... and make it easy to buy it, too!  For the full blog post and show notes visit the blog here. Jens Jakob Andersen is a man on a mission. Jens created RunRepeat.com with a simple mission - make it easy to find your next running shoe. To do this, he's created a pretty solid one-stop-shop for running shoes. On his site you can find boatloads of reviews on shoes, you can find each shoe boiled down to pros and cons given by numerous expert and "normal people" reviews, and you can even buy the shoe via their "deal links". I have to admit... I was pretty impressed not just by the sheer volume of information on RunRepeat... but also by how non-threatening and easy-to-consume it all was. The man has really done it, FitFriends. If you're looking for your next running shoe... you really should check it out. He provides all the info you could need, broken down in helpful, easy-to-understand ways and sorted to show you what is, arguably, the best shoes out there. That said, though... there's one important question left to answer that I HOPE you're asking: How do I know the shoe that's best... for ME? This is the question I posed to him... and while Jens and I may differ on some points... we can both definitely agree on one. Welcome to episode 58 of the Final Surge Podcast where today we welcome Jens Jakob Andersen. Jens founded RunRepeat.com, a website with the goal to help you find your next pair of running shoes and to offer you a deal on them. In this episode, we talk about the growth of RunRepeat, how free shoes could bias results of these reviews and what are some of the trends he is seeing in shoes. Please remember to leave us a review on iTunes. Your review will help us grow our podcast. Next week we have one of the legends of coaching who will be joining us to talk training.   How did you get your start in running? How did your passion for running lead you to create RunRepeat? When did RunRepeat start? Can you explain to our listeners the goal of RunRepeat? Each shoe has a number score associated with it, how does the rating system work? Reviews are from experts on other sites and users who review the shoes on your site? Who are these expert reviewers that work for you? If reviewers are getting free shoes, can it cause a bias in the reviews? If a new shoe was provided for free, will they look at the reviews and treat you differently? How many miles do they run in a pair of shoes before they review? What are some of the current trends you see in running shoes that seem to be having a good impact? What about the Nike 2 hour shoe, what do you think of that shoe project? All this money goes into marketing to say their shoe is the best. So how does someone find out what is the best shoe for them? When I was younger I run almost solely in the Asics GT 2020 line and its successors, in the last decade though I almost never buy the same shoe two times in a row. Do you find people tend to buy the same shoe each time or do they tend to jump around between brands and models? If I am always buying something new, I need to go into a store to try them on. If someone is buying online would you recommend they stick to the same shoe because they cannot try them on? When do you know its time for new shoes? Do you find the shoes that rate the highest are the most popular shoes that companies market the most or do you find no relationship between ratings and popularity? We have had some new companies emerge over the last few years such as the Sketchers Performance line and Under Armor, what do you see as up and coming running shoe lines? They recently signed King Cheserek to a deal which is a huge name. I had a pair of GoRuns about two years ago and if I am being honest, they were probably the most comfortable running shoes I ever owned, but they broke down really quickly. What are you seeing from them and the ratings? I noticed one of your studies showed that the higher the priced shoe, the lower the ratings were, is that because people have unreasonable expectations when they spend more or why do you think that is? You have a study which was ironically posted on your website on July 4th that said American runners are getting slower. But when we look at the Olympic A standard qualifications like the 5k, they the standard was faster in 2016 than it was in 2012, and we had more people who hit the faster A standard. So the elites are not getting slower, so tell us about this report? Is it because more people who would have never considered doing a marathon before are now doing it for charity? What other interesting studies do you have coming out? Final Surge 5 questions in under a minute Favorite running book? - Shoe Dog Current trainers you are wearing? - Declined Favorite race? - Norway 1k vertical climb Favorite recovery meal or recovery drink? - Chocolate Your favorite workout - 10x400 with 1 minute rest + 3 min rest then 10x200 with 1 minute. We know that’s a sensational title, but hear us out. A study published by RunRepeat.com, an independent review aggregator for running shoes, analyzed 34,680,750 race results over the course of 21 years to conclude that American runners are steadily getting slower across distances from the 5K up to the marathon. We know what you’re probably thinking: with Olympians like Galen Rupp and Molly Huddle continually setting national records, how can that be? While it’s clear US elites are steadily advancing, the study found that the remainder of the field is, on the whole, slower than it was in the 90s. Now this could be due to a variety of reasons, and some argue one of those reasons might just be that the sport has gained a lot of popularity in the last couple decades. More runners of varying age and gender? We like the sound of that. While this is certainly plausible, others argue there’s another, less favorable culprit behind the trend: the rising rate of obesity in America. This is the hypothesis behind the study in question led by Danish statistician, runner, and founder of RunRepeat.com Jens Jakob Andersen. While Jens believes the correlation between slowing race times and the deteriorating health in America is too close to deny, he’s quick to remind us that correlation is not causation. When it comes to statistics, Jens says it’s always easier to debunk something that’s not true rather than prove something that is, and that’s exactly what he aims to do in this episode. Listen in and decide for yourself. Whichever way you end up leaning, you’re bound to learn something interesting about yourself and your fellow runner along the way. Questions Jens is asked: 2:28 Tell us about yourself and how did you become passionate about running?   4:30 What prompted you to start RunRepeat and what does your day-to-day entail?   7:02 How is RunRepeat’s Run Score calculated?   11:23 How should runners go about choosing a shoe that’s really right for them?   12:32 What did you find in your study of American runners becoming slower and what do you think the implications are?   21:43 Could it be that there just aren’t as many Americans in the top 1% to compensate for the greater number of people towards the back of the pack?   23:38 What would it take for Americans to reverse this trend?   27:02 Where are some of these Blue Zones located?   27:41 In your study on marathon results, what were some of the key takeaways you saw and what did the study entail?   31:58 Why do you think there has been such an increase in female runners over 50 taking up running within the last decade ?   33:38 Why do you think men tend to go out faster than they probably should when racing?   35:38 Why do you think runners ages 35-45 make the best pacers?   37:02 Based on the studies you’ve done, what advice would you give us on tackling our next marathon?   39:42 What’s next with you at RunRepeat? Quotes by Jens: “It bothered me how 90 percent of people bought the same five pairs of running shoes, and I thought, ‘Why is this happening?’ It’s happening because these brands...promote specific models, and so there becomes a hype around specific models.” “We looked at the finisher number (number 100, number 1,000, number 2,000, number 5,000) for each race distance, and what we found was that across this all were getting slower.” “It’s always hard with statistics to come up with a clear cut conclusion. It’s always easier to debunk something that’s not the case.” “Americans (as well as most other nations) are getting more and more obese, and their finish times are getting slower. But this is a correlation: two parameters that follow each other. It’s not necessarily a causation….So this is our hypothesis, but we cannot conclude it for sure with 100 percent certainty.” Want more awesome interviews and advice?
